I have a mid-2010 iMac. I spent about six months weeding and organizing all of my data, upgrading and updating everything, and backing it all up. One of my last steps was maximizing my memory. This involved buying new memory, including replacing the old. It was after this that I began experiencing the notorious 3 beeps (siren blasts, more like) and crashing episodes. So I turned to Apple for help, and they directed me to The Learning Center, because none of their own locations near me would be able to properly service an older Mac like mine. The LC is the only Apple-accredited repair shop in Ann Arbor. But I had never heard of them - and still wanted to look them up, to know what I was getting into.
The scarcity of reviews made me nervous. The number of negative reviews made me even more nervous. But what choice did I have? So I compensated by preparing myself, duly. Understanding the multiple factors that go into reviews, and their credibility or lack of it - and looking at the issue from both sides (business and customer) - I decided to arm myself properly, going in...but also to let them show me who they really were.
I called The LC, first. My focus was to clearly communicate my reason for bringing my computer in, asking all relevant questions so that I was clear about terms and fees, etc. - and listening carefully to their responses. I logged my calls, and took names. I got a quote, and told them I didn't want any surprises - and we proceeded from there. I was respectful and pleasant, but did not hide my wariness. I did my part, and expected them to do theirs. I took measures to protect myself in the worst case scenario.
When I went in, I was met by an older man and woman. And in minutes, I could see that they knew their craft and had been at it a long time. They've been in business a long time, and are trusted by Apple to repair their stuff. They must be doing something right - I thought to myself, hopefully. Nevertheless, I remained careful. And this is what happened: They answered all of my questions, promised they would not do anything that would increase my costs without notifying me/getting my consent first - and took my computer. I was contacted and updated about my computer, they did what I paid them to do, I was able to pick up my computer in the time frame given me - and didn't pay a penny more than was quoted.
I was relieved to find these people - every one of them I interacted with - friendly, knowledgeable, and honest. I realize everyone has different experiences, and for different reasons. This was mine. While I hope my computer will remain fine - if I did have to go back to them, I would. And with ease, from here on out. This place passes with a thumbs up, from me. read more
