Admittedly this is the only hostel I've stayed at in my life. That being said, it was a pretty good experience and reminded me of low budget camping but communal in a summer camp way. We got a last minute private cabin in September and it was so uncomfortably hot in there. It was clean and as comfortable as you'd expect for the price point. Bathrooms and showers are like a campground bathhouse. Clean enough but shower shoe territory. I was with a male companion so I felt safe but there were a bunch of men around hanging outside late into the night. I would've felt a bit weird at night alone and I don't know if I would stay in the shared building with being the other woman I saw anywhere among a dozen or so men scattered in different areas on premise outdoors after midnight. read more

Well... I have traveled around the interior West for the last 9 years and am finally giving it up as a full time "profession". This place was always there with a bed or a room, or they even used to have campsites. Very reasonable prices and the owners and staff are to be commended for friendliness, fairness, and professionalism. THANK YOU from an old traveler that has gotten older! Easy booking via email, friendly hosts at check in, we got there in the afternoon, got our room (we had a private room w/ lock for three of us girls and felt safe), hiked Arches, then came back for the night. As far as USA hostels go it's pretty standard, nice kitchen space and common area. Clean linens, set your expectations appropriately for the finishes but the bathrooms and beds were clean. Our room had a queen bed and a bunk bed- I got the queen and the mattress was so comfy!!! The twin mattresses were less so, but we all had a good sleep. Only complaint is the extremely strong incense all evening choked me up and our room was quite hot. The box fan helped! read more

Important note: I didn't stay here. I just popped in to shower during a camping trip. This is the quintessential hostel. Bright, happy colors and lots of murals. An eclectic bunch of people and families all relaxing and chatting casually. Run down facilities but not dirty, instead it is charming. Staff was really friendly. People seemed happy. I immediately felt safe and welcome here, which says a lot given that I'm a true crime fanatic and an anxious traveler. I recommend this place for your showering needs while visiting Moab. I can't speak to the lodgings because I haven't stayed but I bet they are lovely! read more

I looovvveeeddd this hostel. It had a cool vibe, the location was great, the cleanliness was good enough, and the price was awesome. I stayed for four nights in September. Every employee I met was really chill, helpful and nice. The main office area is where you will find checkin, a kitchen, a tv and computer area with couch, and a coin operated laundry area. It also has some outdoor tables with benches for hanging out. From there there are a couple other housing areas with similar features, including a dining room in one that I know of. The kitchen comes equipped with pots, pans, plates, and silverware for use, as long as you wash up after yourself. I stayed two nights in a private room, which was located in the second floor of the main office. The room had plenty of outlets, a comfy bed, towels, soap, and bedding. It was musty in there, so much so I think I got a headache from it and the carpet seemed like it could use a good shampoo, but this was the only area I smelled the musty smell. It also had a plug in fan for warmer nights. Next door to it in the hall were two bathrooms with a shower for use. It is shared among the other private rooms and dorms on that floor. One bathroom shower looked like it had seen better days, the tub was blackened. But the bathroom and the other bathroom and shower were pretty cleanly. I also spent two nights in the all-girl dorm. There were six beds in the room, all bunk beds. The bunk beds creaked loudly and wobbled easily, so being quiet for your roommates was difficult and only for the very lithe. The bed was comfy and came with a sheet and comforter. There were no towels with this deal or soap, so bring your own. I also didn't see any lockers? So I just slept with my backpack and kept the rest locked in my car. Honestly, everyone staying there seemed chill and not like a thief, but you never know. The room seemed pretty cleanly. The all-girl dorm was a room in a separate house from the main office. I think the room was all-girl, but the other rooms in this were mixed. This whole house had two bathrooms with showers that seemed decently clean, but I counted at least 20 plus potentially guests in this one, so the showers can get a line in busy times. Fortunately, you can go to one of the other houses if need be. My only complaints are about some of the people that stayed there, but that has nothing to do with the place itself, just people being inconsiderate people sometimes. The location is great. It's only a couple miles from Moab's main "action" and 45 min from Arches, and an hour from Canyonlands Island in the Skye. I'm glad I didn't go for the remote campsites because I was able to get a good nights rest, supplies, food, and access to all the sights more easily. So overall, it's a hostel that doesn't cost a lot, so it's no Ritz, but I felt is was clean enough, comfy, accommodating, had a great vibe, and was in a great location. I truly enjoyed my stay here. It was a bit weird at times but overall very good. I arrived late at night. Remember, you must look for the towing company sign and underneath is the Lazy Lizard sign. Drive through a long gravel drive and past the towing business is a parking area and the hostel. Upon arrival, I was annoyed at all the 20-something men who were smoking weed and drinking at the picnic table on the patio. This is sorta normal for hostels (partying) but very annoying. However.m, the older dude who I think owns this place rocks. He's very friendly and helpful. Plus, he has multiple cats on the property that are all very friendly! He will even let you get the cat treats from the fridge and feed them :) I stayed in a small female bunk room with 2 single beds and 1 double bed. There was one long term roommate and that was it, so I got the nice big bed! And the second night I had no roommates, woo! Bed was comfy. You got a sheet and a comforter, which was nice. Room could get warm. I left the window open but no screen; luckily very few or no bugs got in. I think Utah doesn't have to worry about mosquitos like where I am from! There is a kitchen area and a pretty packed fridge and freezer + a living room with tv. Lots of nice seating outside (from picnic tables to just sitting on steps. The location is right off the main road and only 5ish min past the main downtown and only 20ish min from Arches National Park. I would definitely stay again! Understand: EVERY other hotel in this town charges EXORBITANT rates. It really does not make sense that there aren't more hostels or cheap motels competing. Your options are basically: Motel 6 / Ramada / Comfort Inn for $150 a night, OR go camping, OR go to the Lazy Lizard for, like, under $15 a night. Yes, it's kind of an old rickety building. Yes, there are a lot of weird hippy travelers here. Yes, the rooms sometimes smell funky. But it is clean, it is safe, it has WiFi, and damn, is it cheap and fun. read more

My now husband and I stayed at one of Lazy Lizard's cabins for two nights while on a road trip just before our wedding. We called ahead to let them know we were arriving late, and the owner was kind enough to stay up until we arrived to give us the cabin key. Our cabin was cute, clean, and had plenty of space for all our stuff. The bed was comfortable. There were four outlets total, two of which are used for the air conditioning unit and the electric radiator. We had cold weather throughout our stay, so we never turned on the air conditioning, but the radiator heated up our cabin quickly and kept it warm throughout the night. The bathrooms were a short walk away and were pretty clean. The showers had good water pressure and hot water, which was especially refreshing after a day of hiking at Arches National Park. You're given towels and soap, so be sure to bring shampoo and conditioner. There's also a small communal kitchen and a common area with WiFi. Overall, Lazy Lizard is a step up from your average campground without losing the rustic camping vibe. It's nothing fancy, but it covers all the basics at an affordable price. Next time we head to Moab, we'll be skipping the motels and book another cabin with Lazy Lizard. read more

Well, thank you Lazy Lizard for being my winter camping backup and base-camp for what I call my "Klondike at Klondike Bluffs". This old man wanted to do something adventurous (for an old man); and it was great to know that you had my back. It turned out my klondike was a fun challenge, and doable ... and your long and hot showers were great($4) to use occasionally. The bathrooms are not fancy but always clean, well-kept, and un-timed showers are a blessing. Always pleasant and helpful staff, too. The cleaning staff should by commended IMO for their consistency and great work. Every time I went the shower room was in excellent shape and the staff were nice. read more

Yeah, so I hadn't showered for a couple of days and was in the middle of utah. I googled "cheap places to stay in Moab utah" and voila I get Lazy Lizard International Hostel. I called and lucked out and got the only remaining private room in the place. I'm all about saving cash but I rather sleep in my tent than share a room. WIth that said I got a $28 private room and was psyched because that was a 1/3 of the price of all the other places I called / visited in Moab. I had to share a shower but since I hadn't showered in 3 days it didn't matter how grimy it was. If you're trying to save cash in Moab, this is the place to go. The room itself was ok. I won't lie - I used my own sheets but I was happy to be in a bed as opposed to in a tent. read more

This place is awesome! Not your average hostel. The guests are chill and sociable. I had no complaints and really surprised how orderly and clean everything was. If you're lucky you will get to meet Denali and his great cooking. Just be kind and make a donation if you eat his food which he cooks enough for everyone. The showers and bathrooms are clean. Only minor suggestion is they may consider getting new shower curtains or taking them out for a good cleaning. Feels a bit mildewy. I had private room #8 which was perfect for me, had small heater too. The bathroom was only 5 steps from the showers! Hot water was never an issue. The main office is also where the kitchen and lounge are. Plenty of good signs to gently advise what is shared and not shared. Plus the sink is always cleared and cleaned at the end of each night. It feels very welcoming here. Know it's not a resort but more comparable to a motel. My first-time staying at a hotel but it's nothing like what my friends have told me when they stayed at other hotels. Plus it's sooo close to downtown and less than a minute from the best coffee (drive-through) place across the street - the Wicked Brew opens at 6a! Everyone commented on howbhardbitbis to find. It can be but if you look for the A1 Storage or Enterprise signs you will find it. There is a small yellow sign that says "Hostel" but can really only be seen if traveling northbound (away from the town). If you get into the town you have missed it. read more

Good cheap place for staying in Moab. The manager was an A-Hole though. I asked him how much the t-shirts where because they were cute, and he abruptly responded how he is "Very busy right now! and CANNOT help me!" We decided to throw our key in the bin and check out immediately. That being said, there was also a drugged up woman laughing hysterically in the hallway as we were trying to sleep. I guess these are the things you encounter in a hostel in Utah! Anyway, it was cheap and had clean beds and showers. Probably some of the cheapest accommodations in Moab. They have dorm rooms, camping and small cottages. Coin laundry, communal kitchen, living room, communal showers/restrooms, and an outdoor seating area with bbq grills. The colleges are literally log cabins with electricity, bunk beads, and a space heater. No A/C except the dorm rooms. They provide towels and bed linens. The man who checked us in was very nice, and informational. They messed up our reservation as we were supposed to stay one day longer. When I check back with the staff about a reservation they said they had already rented out our cabin on the last day so we had to cut our trip short. However I will return read more

It's great for the price. We got what we paid for. The grounds are beautiful. Costumer Service was helpful and nice. We got a private room for the five of us and it was clean. I thought they should name this place the "Leaping Lizard" considering the active area of Moab that surrounds this hostel. But other than that, I love this place! It was an incredible surprise to find how inexpensive everything in the hostel is. Talk about laid-back. Sometimes I wasn't sure who to talk to to get towels or ask questions, but there is always someone helping. The first night my little group got two private rooms. We had a shared shower. There was a group kitchen so we got food from the grocer and cooked up meals and stored leftovers. There was a TV to chill to. The rooms were small yet for the price, under 30 each, we were amazed! After a long few days of hiking and exploring Canyonlands, this was heaven. The next night my father stayed in a cabin (about $30 again) and this included 4 beds. I opted for a tent, which was $7 for the night. What a deal! There was free wi-fi included and a nice common area where we all watched television, relaxed and surfed the net. The jacuzzi wasn't working but oh well. I will stay at the Lazy Lizard again. In fact one guy told me he was living there in a tent during the busy season while he worked a job. Gotta love it! Upon latest visit in September, it is still a fabulous deal. $7 for a tent site. Find the tent site to be kind of vague, especially as it was just a 1-night stay. No clearly defined sites- perhaps something could be done for this. One person who had a tent up was taking up what appeared to be 2 or 3 camp sites by rolling out his rug and playing music late into the night (quiet, but still..). I know the tent sites are kind of an add-on but designated spaces could perhaps be established. The showers could use a little painting. Not really big complaints just suggestions. I could see possibly having people who stay at the hostel for a while getting small breaks on their room fees by doing cleaning up, maintenance etc. to help out the hostel. read more

First of all, I want to give this 2.5 stars, but you can't. Quick review (if you don't have the inclination to read it all): Do not stay here if you are a snob, or expect things to be perfect. DO stay here if you need to save money and don't mind some quirkiness, unclean restrooms (just dirty sinks from hand washing I guess) and a very rustic feeling. Ok, so onto the full review. I got a last minute job in Moab and needed a place to stay cheap. I had two choices for cheap, stay in a tent or stay at the hostel. I knew it was going to be hot this time of year, and as far as I could tell their rooms had swamp coolers that would help with the heat. I also read every review here and had a pretty good idea of what to expect when I got there. I booked 3 nights in one of their private rooms for $28.32 per night with tax. The man on the phone was very friendly and told me they had 3 refrigerators and a kitchen that I could use to cook any food I brought. When I arrived the front desk was busy, I waited maybe 5 mins to check in, which I don't consider excessive. The man figured out my total for 3 nights, then I presented my credit card. He asked if I had cash. I said no, sorry. He said, well we prefer cash, but this is fine. I have no problem paying cash, but they need to tell you that when you book, and if they had, I would have brought cash. (just a note to any employee reading this, spread the word to whoever answers the phone) I'm just not the type of person to carry $85.xx in cash all the time. Anyway, back to the review. I went to my private room, opened the door and got a slight whiff of some odd smell. I don't know what it was, but it wasn't offensive, just slightly odd. Maybe it was just the smell of old. Because this place looks pretty old. Well, to be honest, not that old, more like run down. I am guessing these buildings were built in the last 30 years and then allowed to just decay. The main building with the dorms and the bath house are obviously the oldest, next in age I am guessing are the private rooms, then the newest are the cabins, which, although I didn't see the inside, appear to be pretty nice from the outside. Back to my room. The floor was clean, although a very outdated carpet, but still, it was fine. The bed was made with clean sheets and there were two nice bath towels and 3 bars of motel sized soap. The bed had a head board with two levels of shelving which I found very convenient for laying my wallet, phone, etc. In the one corner was a chair, and in the other was a small table with a lamp and the towels. There was also an envelope from whoever cleaned the room, asking for a tip if I liked the room. (hey, I've seen that in chain motels too, well, pre-printed envelopes, not hand written). I flipped on the light switch and the over head fluorescent tubes flickered, but didn't turn on. I turned them off and back on and they came on and suddenly the room was filled with more light than a baseball stadium it seemed. I have to wonder if whoever built this place has stayed in a motel, because I have never seen a room with that much light. They could have gotten away with a nice round fixture with a couple soft white bulbs and I wouldn't have felt like I was in an interrogation room when I flipped on the light. There was a lamp in the opposite corner, but it really was too inconvenient to use, so I never even tested it. The room was hot, so I immediately turned on the swamp cooler. It whirred to life and began blowing cool air into the room. It had two fan settings and seemed to work pretty good. Not as cold as an AC, but it still was cool. The bed was decent, not too soft, not too firm and there were two pillows with mismatched pillow cases (like I said, quirkiness). I immediately took off the bed spread, like I do in most motels, since no place ever washes those and then started pulling back the blanket and there was a small, winged bug underneath. I am not sure what kind of bug it was, or how he got there, but I picked it up and threw it outside. I googled for images of bed bugs and this was NOT a bed bug. I felt ok, as I saw no other bugs in the bed, or anywhere in the room. I had brought a sleeping bag and my own sheet, because frankly I was concerned (from the reviews) that the sheets might not be clean or usable. To be fair, they did appear clean and I probably would have slept on them if I didn't bring my own. So I opened the sleeping bag and placed my sheet on top. I knew I would not need a blanket in the heat of summer. I put everything in my room and fired up my computer to check the wifi. (code is in the office) It actually worked, and pretty well, and was FREE! I then decided to BBQ some burgers I had brought. Well, it looks like I am at the limit of my 5,000 characters. The Lazy Lizard is definitely the cheap slut of Moab accommodations, and like a cheap slut, it's cheap, friendly, fun, and on the grungy side. Having said that, my bed linens were surprisingly crisp and clean and the hostel itself wasn't too bad. I would recommend at least rinsing the dishes off in the kitchen before you use them though, and the bathroom had a suspicious mystery strain on an odd place on the wall that unnerved me a bit. However, the bathrooms are cleaned daily, so the stain vanished by my second night here. There's free wi-fi and spots to camp outside for $7, but for $2 more you can stay in the dorm room. My experience was pretty good in the dorm. They turn the AC up so it actually gets a little chilly after 1:00 am despite the 100 degree temps outside, and my roommates didn't snore or have loud monkey sex in the middle of the night. There were definitely some interesting characters staying at the hostel, but I felt safe enough considering I was by myself. The staff is friendly and helpful. Regardless - this is Moab. I was researching itineraries for a road trip from California to Colorado, when I learned of a $9 youth hostel in Moab, UT. $9 youth hostel? What is this, southern Italy? So, I plotted my course to spend a night in Moab and visited the nearby Arches National Park. My notes: "I pulled into the Lazy Lizard Hostel at Moab around 12:30. I felt bad about waking the guy up for a $9 dorm bed. He was way out of it and told me to just take any top bunk in a particular dorm room and we would figure things out in the morning. It was a rough night on a thin mattress with a thin pillow. I tossed and turned and just as I was getting my sleep on right my roommates began to stir in noisy ways so that they could get a start on the day's rock climbing. Americans are not accustomed to the ways of youth hostels, and these guys loved to rifle through their luggage and tromp in and out, leaving the door open. I got up several times throughout the morning to shut the door. At one point I sat up awake waiting for one of the last guys to finish his noisy morning rituals and make his way out of the room. He greeted me and asked if I was a climber. When I told him no he expressed a sentiment that I was probably a nice person anyway, and he was gone, and I rested well a bit longer. Probably around 0800 or 0900 I made my way out of bed, downstairs, apologized for waking the guy up in the middle of the night, and gave him $9.80 (tax, you see) and bathed." So, rough night and noisy neighbors, enh. $9 youth hostel in America! YOU BET!! My car didn't start and I nearly had to stay a bit longer, but the guy at the hostel and the friendly people of Moab helped me manage to eventually get on my way without need of a mechanic, so I could get stuck the next morning in Silverton, CO, which has a more comfortable $20 hostel. read more

Stayed at the Lazy Lizard for almost a week. During this time, I had the chance to get some rest (hard to do sometimes in a hostel!) and adventure around the local natiparks. A few things to know: 1. You have access to a kitchen but Denali makes food a couple times during the week. He made pasta and sauce and also 'Mexican' flatbread pizzas. All of this is donation based. 2. Email and call ahead at least a week during the busy season. They get pretty inundated with folks throughout the busy season that you will not be high on their attention list or not even get back to you. 3. All the dorms are in the main house. I was super confused about this at first. Mystery solved. Overall, in my experience, this is a great place to stop and get some rest. It's very clean and gives you some opportunities to meet fellow travelers. I look forward to the next time i'm in Moab because Lazy Lizard will be on my list read more

I actually splurged and took one of the private cabins during my stay in moab, ut. The cabin itself had enough room to sleep easily six people other than that it was spartan. I had more than enough room to layout all my photography gear and luggage. As I recall the separate shower and toilet facilities were not that bad. One thing I wouldn't suggest trying to find this place in the dark its located behind a storage business and it took me a little hunting down to find the place. read more

BF and I stayed here one night - our very first night in Utah. We reserved a private cabin for $30 or some really great price, and were happy to find the bunk beds were wide enough for us to snuggle! :) This hostel is a little off the main drag tucked away. The other patrons seemed like mostly dirty people tuckered out from adventuring all day, and some young international people were around too. Wifi was operational for the two minutes I used it, our door locked fine, the cabin was clean, blankets were warm enough, and the shower was hot. Some people who forget there's an s in hostel might be put off by the cluttered office and modest digs, but we found nothing to complain about at the Lazy Lizard. read more

Moab's best kept budget lodging secret, for now anyway... We got frustrated by the exorbitants rates even the dive motels like the Apache were soaking tourists with so we rolled the dice and decided to lay the lumber on the Lazy Lizard. We rolled into Moab late at night from the south after dodging deer all the way in. The Lizard is NOT well marked and you'll have to drive slowly or you'll miss it as its tucked away behind a self-storage business about a mile south of the main downtown district. Drive down the dirt road and turn right at the end and you'll be at the hostel. Check-in area was pretty busy when we got there and the owner was waiting for us. He walked us out to our cabin which was spartan but spotlessly clean. Before he left, he fired up the swamp cooler which roared to life and made a hot night much more bearable. As a whole, the cabin was quite good. The only issue we had was with the mattress which was really worn and shitty. Had we complained though I'm sure the owner would have either replaced it or put us in another cabin. Basic communal bathrooms were also spotless with plenty of hot and cold water. Common lounge and shared kitchen that everyone's welcome to use. And yep, the old graybeard Denali was there along with us making pancakes for donations so be sure to take care of him. He's also a wealth of information on the local area and other national parks so feel free to pick his brain. All the lodging options (cabin, dorm, tent space) are extremely good value but I'd avoid the dorm unless your noise tolerance level is high as they're adjacent to the bathrooms and the outside patio area where foot traffic is frequent. Or you can maybe make arrangements to live outta your Subaru like Denali! Heh! Extra points for character. The resident cats wandered into our cabin more than once and made themselves at home. Friendly hippies and young backpackers abound. OUTSTANDING alternative to the bland overpriced chain lodging that dominates the tourist area downtown. Prior reservations are very necessary at this place or you'll likely be shut out if you just expect a room to be available as you cruise by. The Lizard is already marked down for a return stop the next time we roll into Moab. read more

We've stayed here twice over the years (2009 and 2012). The last time we had a group of about 14 people. This place is great. If you're looking for luxury, turn around. If you're looking for shelter, stay here! The bathrooms are communal, as is the kitchen if you choose to use it (we never have). For two nights in a six person cabin we paid just under $105, so about $17.50 per person. Sweet deal. The hostel is a bit difficult to find, it's south of town and tucked behind a storage unit complex, or something along those lines. Still, its pretty convenient and it's not hard to find parking in "the city." Really, if you're down for a walk, its not too far removed for that. It's not the Ritz and somethings are in a bit of disrepair, but overall, it's my first choice for Moab lodgings. read more

The band and I broke down just outside of Moab and had to get our bus towed to an auto shop. Since the shop was closed (it was Sunday), we needed a place to crash. Thanks to the sign on the road, we found this nice little hostel and rented one of the log cabins. The beds were comfy, the room was cozy, equipped with a heater, and it was a very very pleasant place to stay. The people who run the Lazy Lizard are very nice and personable people and helped make our spontaneous stay a pleasant one. They even gave us homemade coconut macaroons! The next time I'm in Moab (which will hopefully be on purpose and not due to unfortunate circumstance), I would easily stay at this hostel again and I highly recommend anyone to do the same. Talk about bang for your buck! The lazy Lizzard hostel was clean! They provided bedding for us, and Depending on what you rent, they will provide you with towels also. This was my first time staying in a hostel and my expectations where exceeded. If you looking to do Moab on a budget, you have found the right place. read more

I loved this place. I've never stayed in a hostel before, so this was a great experience. I love the community-oriented feel. I don't think I've met so many friendly strangers in one place before, outside of Texas. :) The room was small but sufficient. The bed was good, the heater worked, the bath house was good enough. The staff was wonderful and so very friendly. Food was offered to us more than once! There are dorm-style rooms and private rooms. We opted for the private room. If you're looking for a budget stay, this place is pretty awesome! I'm glad I stepped outside of the box and tried the Lazy Lizard. read more

I was extremely impressed by how clean our cabin was. For the two nights we stayed, I didn't see a single bug inside which is hard to achieve in my experience with cabins. There were folded towels, soap, and plenty of blankets for us when we arrived. We got a cabin with a bunk bed and a twin bed. The four of us slept comfortably. The cabin also had air conditioning which was our main concern after being outside all day. The bathrooms are also very clean and are close to the cabins. Showers kept their temperature and never got cold. This place is also right in town and convenient to lots of restaurants. read more

Found bugs in our sheets. 3 separate times. Our cabin floor was dirty, felt like the cabin hadn't been cleaned in a while. Showers were good. Everything smelled like marijuana. I'd say you should stay here if you're ok with what you get for $50. Everything else in Moab is expensive so it's nice to save money but this place was gross. read more
