It's been a wild ride. When I first came here 15 years ago it was a diamond in the rough. An exciting menu that was executed perfectly and a legend of a bartender in the middle of nowhere! Fuck me! What a find. I eventually moved to this town and then unfortunately we went from diamond in the rough to just plain rough. Our favorite bartender had left, the food was inconsistent and the magic was gone as they say. Over the years the inconsistency turned into consistently bad and we absconded the lion. We'd ventured outward and abandoned our home spot for greener pastures. HOWEVER, I'd gotten some good reports of late and decided to make the sojourn 5 minutes from my home and I've been pleasantly surprised. They've extended the bar, the wings are fantastic, fish and chips are on point and the beers are cold! Only problem here is it's fucking cold. Like really cold. If people are eating dinner in their winter coats it's too fucking cold. Sort that out love. I'll be back. Four stars. read more

I got the Joshua's Famous Bowl which was slightly overwhelming due to the saltiness but was still very good! The ambiance is very mellow but new and trendy for sure! This is a pleasant local restaurant that offers good food and good service. We (fam 4)_stopped in on Sunday at 4 PM and the place was busy and not crowded. The tables are small and the menu seems to suggest that the establishment caters to smaller groups or bar oriented crowds most times. The chili cheese fries were great, and the cottage pie was very well made. The burgers are frozen patties, but the fried chicken was great. It definitely a great place to have a meal especially since there aren't many sit-down options in the area. THe cost for the four of us was $100 read more

Perhaps the circumstances were extenuating, but went for dinner Sunday night, 1 bartender with 12+patrons at the bar to take care of - cannot effectively act as waitress for the tables and also do takeout. Felt bad for her. Been eating here several time a year for 10 years without issue - food is usually good but was was sub par at best. Our food got cold sitting under the heat lamps for nearly 10 minutes, If I knew it was my order, I would have gotten up and retrieved it myself. I'm sure if the owners knew what was going on, then they would have driven down and bailed things out. Adding a star for the young womans attempt to perform the impossible. read more

It's pretty casual around here, nobody to stay you at the door. You just stay yourself apparently, which is a problem because a woman sat there for ages when one of the bartenders said to the other, "did you get her? And the other one said oh! No I didn't". Anyways, the drinks are good, decent selection of beer on tap, and the sweet and spicy tenders were delicious. The problem is that we came for the nachos since they were supposedly voted some of the best in the state. We asked the bartender which ones were the famous ones, and she had no idea. She said the chicken ones were the most popular so we got them. Massive disappointment when you're coming for famous nachos. They hardly hear any vegetables on them,v the chicken was kind of dry and not like pulled chicken like we hoped. And the lettuce...I think that's what it was .. It was not iceberg, it was some other kind of dark green lettuce cut in strips... Very strange, I really prefer iceberg on nachos and I have never seen this before. The only other thing that was weird is that I know a little too much about the bartender's life now because there was a lot of talking going on between them. Finally, we visited this place after hearing and reading reviews for a long time. It was nothing like I imagined and didn't disappoint. The parking is challenging, but worth the effort. A great old house with porches and decks and live comfortable music. The place is pub like, laid back. I had the Spring special Cali salad which is one of the best and most unique salads I've ever had. It deserves 5 stars. Hub had the salmon and he would give it 4 stars only because he said he has had better. The service was good and friendly, available but not in your face. A friend of mine and his wife stopped in on Oct 22nd and Knowing we would be in the area the following day he suggested it for lunch. It was an excellent suggestion. My wife went with the ravioli while I had a burger and fries-both excellent. The carrot cake is an excellent choice as well. For me, the nicest part was the atmosphere. The young lady who waited on us was very pleasant and we met the owner who was as friendly as they come. A great spot if your looking for good food at a very reasonable price. read more

Went with a friend for a catch-up lunch today. Haven't been here for many years, when it used to be called Lazy Lion Cafe. On a nice day, like today without humidity, people can sit outside on the wrap-around porch. Not sure if they have a/c, but today windows were open as was the unscreened entrance door (had a persistent fly visiting our table) with big fans in some of the windows. Little breezy sitting next to the window, but I didn't mind the air movement. Except for one other person, we were the only ones there around noon time. Wasn't until about an hour later that other people started showing up. When I checked in, a Yelp offer popped up for 15% off an appetizer. Showed it to our server, who was surprised. She said the owner hadn't authorized Yelp to post any offers yet. She honored it though. Guess there will be some discussion with Yelp. Oops. For the app we opted to try the beer battered mushrooms. They were excellent! Nice and fresh, not heavily breaded, good beer taste. This from a non-drinker. ;) The chipotle ranch dressing was nice, but I'm not into spicy. Nor is my friend. We asked for some regular ranch. Not that we used much, just inhaled the mushrooms naked! My lunch companion had the mozzarella panini and upgraded the regular fries to truffle fries which she had never had before. She quite liked them. I sampled a couple. Nice flavor. And even though they were very thin fries, they didn't get soggy with the truffle oil. Little sprinkling of Parmesan on top. After all those mushrooms, she took half the fries and half the sandwich in a doggie bag! It was a huge portion to begin with. I chose the cup of soup and half sandwich. Latter was tuna melt on rye and soup of the day was haddock chowder. Lots of flavor in the soup, but almost no haddock to be found. Few little mushy bits at the bottom. And huge chunks of potato at the top. Broth was nice, not heavy or pasty, and very buttery. Just misnamed. Try potato chowder. And the sandwich would have been really good, except for the fact it was missing the tuna! Less than a spoonful of tuna salad lightly spread on top of the big slice of tomato and melted cheese. Hmm... Are they really cutting corners, or was someone not stirring the soup pot properly before ladling it into the cup? And did they run out of tuna salad? At least it wasn't too expensive at $8.95. I'd pay a bit more to get what the menu implied. Surprisingly we had room for dessert. They don't have a dessert menu because options change all the time, so we took a look at the well stocked display case. Cheesecakes were tempting, but we decided to split a piece of raspberry crumb cake. It was a good sized piece. Neither of us would have finished the whole thing by ourselves. It was nice and refreshing. Other than the missing proteins in my food, we had a lovely afternoon and probably will go back again. read more

This was a wonderful find! Fun atmosphere, with very friendly staff. The Triple Cheese Chicken and Spinach was very creamy and delicious. One of my sisters can have no gluten contamination and they made sure she had a delicious meal. The portion size was good and we really enjoyed having live blues to listen to. It was just a tad loud making conversation harder, especilly with my Mom not hearing too well. If you get dessert be prepared to share! The chocolate cake was delicious and huge! The lack of any staff member wearing masks was bothersome. The amount of people these waitresses are coming into contact with daily, wearing a mask could keep your customers safe. I have had past issues with this restaurant and the fact they skimp you on food when they charge you a fortune. I called and placed an order for a Rueben, with extra sweet potato fries, a kids Mac n cheese meal, and a large fry. (For over $25). When I was on the phone I was told that everything would be ready in 15 minutes. I showed up and picked up this kraft Mac n cheese that was barely filled for 5 bucks. I got a tiny side of the fries I was told would be a large (which I have ordered and have gotten in a bigger size before) and when I called to complain about what my take out order looked like they said that's how they "portion" the food and the girl refused to let me speak to a manager about it. They get their cakes from hannaford and their whoopie pies from the gas station. I will be bringing my business elsewhere. They're ripping people off. read more

When we were driving around in Deerfield a couple of years ago, we had stopped at The Nine Lions Tavern for lunch. It was such a terrific time, and the food was just great that we've always wanted to come back. Even though it's now a 45 minute drive for us, it was well worth it. The atmosphere was great, and the food is super. I had the Chicken Vesuvius, and it was outstanding in every way, right down to the perfectly prepared asparagus. The menu description said, "Marinated Grilled Chicken Breasts Topped w/ Roasted Tomatoes, Pancetta Bacon & Herbed Florentine Cream Sauce Served w/ Wild Rice & Asparagus." I could taste each component, and the sauce was so tasty and smooth that the whole meal couldn't have been any better. My wife had the Salmon, described as: "Sweet Miso Glaze Served over Wild Rice & Vegetables." I'm not a salmon fan, so I didn't try it, but she loved it. Very impressive and our best regards to the chef for such wonderful food. Though the wait staff is really friendly and knowledgeable, they do tend to focus a little too much on chatting with regulars they know. It took awhile a couple of times to get their attention because they don't really scan the room when they are off on another task. And for folks who live closer than us, they appear to be very actively engaged in providing all sorts of customer activities such as trivial pursuit nights and entertainment. And that's a wonderful thing for sure. Though we had an early dinner, I'd be concerned, however, with the comment another reviewer had about the live music being too loud; that would have been a HUGE negative for us. It's way too small to be a music venue and so I'd just like to add my thoughts here about that. I'd think that too much of that, and all you'd get is the tavern crowd and not a dinner focused customer such as us who spent around $80. It would have been fine to have someone, even a few musicians, playing nicely in the background, but if we would have walked in and been faced with loud music, I don't think we would have stayed. My wife and I had dinner here last evening with another couple. We had the mussels and calamari for starters, Chicken Vesuvius and Chicken Piccata entrees, and two kinds of cake for dessert. Everything was delicious. If nit picking, the mussels were slightly overcooked and the portion a bit small for the cost. All the other portions were very ample, including the cake slices, and well-prepared. Service was prompt and attentive. Beer selection is small but some good craft offerings are available. The only downside to the evening was the music. It's nice to have live music to accompany dinner, and the performer, a blues guitarist, was really very good. But loud. Too loud. It was difficult to converse with our friends on the other side of the table, or with the server. It's not a concert venue...turn it down. read more

First, I should say that I would have given them an additional half star if it was possible. We've been going to the Lazy Lion since it opened. One reason is that it is pretty much the only place with some atmosphere for miles around it. We've always liked the decor and the menu on paper-it's the implementation of the menu that is the problem. With the previous management, the service was so bad that my wife actually won a $25 gift certificate by detailing our experience there for a contest. The restaurant changed hands and things improved for a while, but the last few visits, the food has really been lacking. It come out cold, sometimes late and just not very appealing. We'll probably give it another chance, because the atmosphere is nice and there is live acoustic music on the weekends. Just don't go there hungry! read more

Apparently, one lion has eaten another. Nine Lions has replaced the Lazy Lion, which had been one of my favorite stops on my trek back home from Rhode Island (or, better yet, for brunch in the reverse direction). Alas, a Friday evening pit-stop at this once reliable point of nourishment ended in hungry hungry heartache. It's certainly a townie spot, and for good reason - it's the only tavern in town (or, at least, the only one with enough of a reputation to recall). The menu touts meals of home: meatloaf, mac'n'cheese, burgers, and ...sad (meaning uninventive) salads. An order was placed for the buffalo mac'n'cheese ($11) and veggie burger ($12), with a start of onion rings. Our start was a greasy one (like....two napkin greasy). But hungry bellies devoured them quickly (not recommended), quicker than the wait for the mains anyway (certainly not recommended). The mac'n'cheese was of a spice level resulting in consumption of only a third of the portion (by a mouth that is no stranger to heat, particularly buffalo). The burger was messy and difficult to consume with dignity (I'm not saying that I wanted dignity at that point of starvation, but in a booth-free land of small tables I would prefer to at least be able to put the thing down and use a napkin). Catching the attention of our server was difficult (it took a 15-minute attempt to succeed in obtaining our bill), but at least we had live music to fill the time. A bit of a disappointment out of what was a long-time favorite. But then you have it. In like a lamb....out like a Lion. read more

Great food! Remarkably diverse menu for a cafe that appears out of the middle of the forest. They were quick to offer the capability to cool food to-order (working around dietary restrictions) and everyone's plates were delicious. The crowd is a riot. We were there on a random Saturday before noon. The cafe was a mix of people having breakfast, brunch, and lunch; people watching soccer on television at the bar; and people having an early glass of wine. Great place; fantastic atmosphere. We didn't save room for desert; don't fall prey to our mistake. The desert display alone warranted a five-star review (from the look and smell of it). read more

There is probably only one thing I see wrong with 4 stars...I have frequented the Lazy Lion many times in the past,, and on those visits they would have received 5 stars. They are the only game in town(Deerfield) so I can find it easy for them to become complacent. The food wowed me every time before but this time I was a little disappointed. I have not been there for about 6 months. The restaurant looked a little bit tired,...when I went in there a couple years back there seemed to a place for everything and everything in its place....maybe it is not noticeable if you are there every day. I took my wife here for Valentines day and we had an outstanding dining experience. Well worth the drive to the middle of nowhere to experience the cuisine of a world class chef. Rosemary encrusted chicken that fell off the bone in a lemon cream sauce and the Salmon special was "the best she ever had." Rene our waitress was attentive and checked in several times, great service. The cherry on top was live music from master bluesman Alan Roux, much better than you would expect in a cozy neighborhood tavern. Outstanding food, atmosphere and great entertainment make this place a real winner. read more
