Mixed emotions. Barista was friendly enough. My wife ordered a mocha with whipped cream - she likes to treat herself - whipped cream was fantastic, mocha itself was just okay. Tridents is better. I myself had a regular cup of joe and it was fine but I did feel rushed to put my cream and sugar in and while I was over there at the station there were no clean spoons and I had to stir with a straw which I found a little upsetting knowing it would later end up in a poor sea turtles nostril. So that kind of chapped my ass. Coffee itself was fine. Now this is where it gets hairy. My wife ordered a "pastry" but I don't know if you can even legally call it that. I'm not entirely sure it was actually edible but she did eat it. But it was honestly the worst "pastry" either of us have ever had in our lives. I'm not sure if it was gluten free or really old or had a defect or you know was just made wrong but it was truly horrific. This isn't an exaggeration - it tasted like cardboard. On top of that, every single person was taking up a ton of space, and I know this isn't the coffee shops fault, but it was a little annoying and kind of laughable. read more

I loved the atmosphere here! Its a pretty popular place study spot so depending when you go, it might be hard to find a spot. There were extension cords which was helpful for charging my laptop and I liked that they stay open for longer hours compared to most coffee shops i've visited in Boulder. I didn't stay for the live band, but my roommate did and really enjoyed it. I'll definitely go back for a study spot and a to here some local artists. read more

I was excited to see matcha latte on the menu here. I haven't been able to find much of this in Boulder/Denver, and in fact to my surprise baristas have asked me what a matcha latte was, or what matcha was. I paid for the matcha latte, received it, and it didn't look green. Ok maybe their matcha was old and oxidized? I took a few sips and it tasted like they made black tea into a latte. My partner, who self-proclaimed has no taste buds, took a few sips and reassured me that it was matcha, but he offered to go back to the baristas just to make sure. Apparently they had run out of matcha and what I was drinking was a mate latte. Giving only a 2 star because I'm pretty sensitive to stronger caffeine and this was already close to evening, I just don't think this is something they should bait-and-switch on. read more

Great brews, Terrible customer service. The blonde at the counter with curly hair (don't know her name, no name tag) was beyond condescending and rude. She scoffed at a question and acted as if we were wasting her time. I get that people have bad days, but don't take it out on the customer. I won't be back just because of that. I am confused at the several reviews praising the "nice," "friendly" staff at the Laughing Goat. Every time I've been there, I've chuckled to myself at the absurdly rude service. It doesn't matter how friendly and expeditious with your order you try to be - even a "small nonfat chai, thanks" is met with a silent sneer. I suspect even "plain coffee" would be too much to ask for the surly baristas that work at the Laughing Goat. Being a naturally friendly and self-deprecating person, when treated rudely, I always wonder what *I* did wrong to deserve such scorn. I think, "Maybe I ordered incorrectly" or "Maybe I didn't hear her say something." Then I have to catch myself and remember - no, some people are just cranky assholes. This is a coffee shop, right? Where people...order coffee? And then drink it? That's what I thought. The above complaint registered, Laughing Goat is actually a pretty nice place to hang out once you get past the "Soup Nazi"-esque ordering process. The coffee is delicious and skillfully brewed. On a good day you might get a little squiggle of latte art in your mug (which I love.) There are tasty snacks and now they're serving wine and beer. And, innovative, mellow local musicians often round out the atmosphere. So, all in all, I like the Laughing Goat, but I wish that it felt as friendly and as homey as its predecessor, Penny Lane. read more

If you use a debit or credit card and are in the habit of skipping the last screen on Square, be warned: Laughing Goat WILL charge a tip onto your card without asking you. This happened to me twice in the same day before I noticed it. I got a cup of coffee - $2, now $3 with the tip that either the cashier added herself or they have Square add automatically. I got a refill and a granola bar - $4, now $5 with the added tip. I spent $6 today and apparently tipped the barista 33% for the service of charging my card against my will. I go to the Laughing Goat on campus all the time, and this has never happened at that location, so I am decently confident this is not just some pre-programmed fluke of Square. It's stealing, plain and simple, and the manager at this location needs to have a talk with his baristas right now. I'm all for tipping, but it's not a compulsory act. read more

Lots of seating - some tables seem to be placed haphazardly but maybe that's the clientele not necessarily the design. Plenty of places to plug in. Zero line despite how many people were there. Cashier was friendly. Barista was quick. Disappointed that Torani syrups are used and the espresso in my latte tasted burnt. Food & snack options available though I did not partake. The Laughing Goat is everything I dislike about coffee houses: - There are approximately 9 million tables, all put as close together as possible to accommodate all of them. Crowded coffee houses tend to be a thing in Boulder, but the Laughing Goat takes this to an extreme. - The tea selection sucks. I realize that it is a coffee house, but having a decent selection of loose tea is not hard. Instead, they have a tiny selection of teabags. When they "make" the tea for you, they give you a glass of boiling water (regardless of the type of tea, it is always boiling) and then let you put the tea bag in after the fact. Yes, its a bit retentive to expect that a place that sells beverages know the correct order and relative temperature of water for the teas - but isn't that their business? I am scared to even try their coffee if this is how they treat something as simple as tea. - The most obnoxious thing about the Laughing Goat is the attitude of the people that work there. They are overwhelmingly rude and snobby, with few exceptions. This is especially shocking, as people in Boulder tend to be very friendly! If I want great coffee, I would much rather go to Ozo. If I am looking for tea, I go to Atlas. If I am searching for crappy selection, crowded workspace, and rude service, I head to Laughing Goat. read more

This is easily one of my most visited shops in Boulder. The atmosphere is an idiosyncratic piece of the place, and one that you won't find elsewhere. The coffee is great, the staff is helpful and sans-attitude, and there isn't a better place to catch nightly live music on Pearl in my opinion. The outside patio, which is surely some of the most sought after seats in the house, is one the nicest places to sit on Pearl, and if I get the opportunity to snag one of these seats, I take full advantage. The back of the house also has some prime seating, plenty of outlets for your computer, and lots of opportunity to bring some of the tables together if you're meeting with people. Seemingly, the staff chooses the playlist of the house every day - and I've never been disappointed. I even found myself Shazamin' some songs a few days ago... The point is the music is always nice. On the walls, they have rotating exhibitions of local artists - always good. At 7 pm, they clear the stage at the back of the house of tables and prepare for the nightly live music, which is a harbor for local musicians, from many genres - and even a host for poetry reading on (I believe) a weekly basis. Tuesdays and Wednesdays are Jazz nights, and some of my favorite acts in town have a monthly residency here. Overall, whether you're looking for a coffee shop to hang out with friends, get some work done, listen to awesome music, or just plain read a book, I highly suggest the Goat. read more

I came up to Boulder to "work" one afternoon. I sent a text to my Boulder residing friend, "hey [friend], where is a good place with free wifi, outlets, a patio, beer, coffee, and snacks and is on pearl?" Within minutes she texted back "laughing goat on pearl." I didn't think she'd take me seriously. I seriously didn't think there would be such a place. But in Boulder, anything is possible! I contemplated a fancy schmancy coffee, for about 2 seconds. However, it was fortuitously happy hour and I chose to enjoy a cheap can of beer instead. Yummy, locally-made breakfast burritos, fluffy quiche, tons of pastries, fast wi-fi, and a great patio? Oh, and coffee and alcohol? The Laughing Goat gets my vote. Tiffany C and I stopped in for an afternoon a few weeks ago, and I was actually so cozy I didn't want to leave. The checkout counter can get a bit tight, the guy taking our order was a little terse, and I couldn't find any salsa for my burrito, but hey, if those are the only negatives, that's not all that bad. I'll definitely stop by again next time I'm in Boulder to sample the bar beverages, and hopefully remember to ask them what the altar by the front door is all about. read more

I liked the music they were playing....and that's about it. Neither my husband or I liked the cappuccinos, it tasted dirty and underwhelming. The barista had a smug attitude and the whole place was dated and blah. I also got shoved out of the way three times while standing in line to order my coffee because they have stuffed so many tables and chairs near the counter that if there is a short line no one can get past. There was a lot of people working on laptops so I'm guessing they have free wifi and plenty of places to charge your devices. So if that's what you need this place provides that. I had wanted to try this place for a while now and I kind of wish I hadn't. read more

The Laughing Goat, in many ways, fills the void left downtown by the closure of Penny Lane. For those who don't remember, Penny Lane was a hippie-centric coffee shop that catered to the poetry, beatniklicious crowd. I went there a few times and actually dug it. The Goat, by comparison, has a lot in common but can be a little too snooty at times. Nothing poisonous, but it's not the friendliest place to get a beverage in town. However, they host lots of cool events and live music, which most other joints in town can't muster. The drinks are fine and the baristas clearly know what they're doing. The space is much bigger than you'd suspect, so there's ample seating in the back. They also have Izzes - woooo! read more

Health hazard!!! OK, fact is, this is my favorite coffee shop. Awesome vibe, the friendliest baristas & high quality food. My only complaint is that if you happen to stay for more than 30 minutes, you will leave smelling like you cooked/burned and entire loaf of grilled cheese sandwiches in your small bedroom with the door closed and no ventilation. I am worried for the people who work here that they will have permanent lung damage from the panini maker smoke. When I come home from an afternoon working there, my wife usually will ask if something is burning downstairs in our kitchen. I'll smile and say, "nope, I've just been at the laughing goat again." I'm new to Boulder and always looking for great cafes to work from, since I "work from home". I stumbled upon the Laughing Goat while downtown and looking for a different coffee shop. The name drew me in. And what kept me there was the tons of places to sit, and the plethora of outlets! The workers seemed nice and I like the decor. Lots of people on their laptops there, probably changing the world from their seats. Prices are also reasonable. Good selection of tea and some tasty gluten-free treats. I never saw a goat though, wildly disappointing! Anyway, I've been to about 9 coffee shops here (including 3 or 4 Starbux), and so far, this is the best one. read more

Here in the peoples republic of Boulder, Colorado, there used to be a coffee house called Penny Lane. All the flakes and nuts hung out there to write bad poetry, sing lousy music, play chess and perhaps buy some coffee. It was a great place! Laughing goat... well... it is no Penny Lane, even though they they try and leech off the coolness of Penny Lane by having bought some of it's signs. The stuff they sell is tasty (usually) but the usual Boulder priced. But the attitude. Stop and ponder for a moment... there seems to be quite a few comments such as "good coffee, crappy attitude..." Well that should tell you something. The people who work at TLG have a really piss poor attitude. They act like they are better than the customers because... because... man... I don't know why they think they are better. But at least they treat everybody the same, from the Nobel winning physicist to the street kids... they treat them like crap. There are plenty of other places to get coffee in Boulder, and without the dollop of snotty attitude. read more

One of the things I'm constantly in search of is a coffee shop that offers a tasty menu as well. This is actually a good bit harder than it might appear. I don't really want a coffee shop that offers a full menu, in fact, the food doesn't even need to be made on premises; I'd much rather the place focus on good, high quality coffee and good service. I'm fine with a light menu, after all, if I want a more full meal, there are plenty of restaurants that offer full fare. Tasty pastries, maybe a few sandwiches or some soup/chili are all that a coffee shop really needs to offer. A place that offers both high quality food and high quality coffee is rare. Fortunately, Boulder's Laughing Goat Coffeehouse is one of those. Offering both locally made food and locally roasted coffee, "The Goat" as it's known by the locals, is located on the eastern end of Pearl Street, well out of the rush of the touristy Pearl Street Mall. The Laughing Goat has become a regular stop on my Saturdays in Boulder. After running my various errands, I stop by there for a quick lunch or snack and cup of coffee. My favorite meal is a cup of Kaladi Brothers Coffee (one of four local roasts that I like out of the several roasters that exist in the Denver/Boulder area...more on that soon), a caprese sandwich, and a big old slice of chocolate pie. The sandwich and pie are made by Boulder bakery, Breadworks. The coffee is rich, almost decadently so, and a splash of cream makes it perfect; no sugar necessary. The sandwich is light and offers a variety of textures and flavors from the chewy bread to the roasted tomatoes balanced out nicely by the cool pesto and greens, then finished off by the smooth mozzarella cheese. The pie is...well, addictive, especially when paired with the coffee. Not too sweet at all, but speaking of rich, the pie is an absolutely perfect compliment to the coffee, creating an explosion of intense mocha in the mouth that comes dangerously close to short-circuiting the brain. Reasonably priced, there are very few ways I'd rather spend an early Saturday afternoon. read more

The coffee is fine. It's not awful, nor is it great. It's what I would consider "par." It meets my expectations so it would get 3 stars. Except the service sucks. I work within a 5 minute walk so I frequent the Goat. If there are more than two people ahead of me, I turn right back around out the door. They're slow- excruciatingly slow. "Rude" may not also be the right term, but at the very least they could stand to be nicer. The owner is the worst offender- not sure I've ever seen him smile, and every time I interact with him he clearly has better things to do than so much as smile. There are exceptions, of course, but I generally walk out having been treated like I'm the asshole for walking in to get a cup of coffee. So if you want average coffee, slow service, and surly attitude- this is your joint. If you want above average coffee, also slow service, and friendly people, walk a couple more blocks to The Cup. read more

This place is awesome. Not only is it plain awesome, it serves Beer and Wine. GOOD beers too; Xingu, Duvel, Chimay... not cheap beers, but good beers. There's regularly music which is obviously hit or miss, but so long as you KNOW there will most likely be music you can avoid it when you would otherwise like a quieter environment. They have good food, great coffee and great beers. OH! And their wifi is fast. Like, being at home on the weekend fast, not at all normal coffee shop speeds. read more

After walking around Pearl Street in Boulder I started to get a bad case of coffee shop envy. Or maybe I had just drank from too many of them. I thought my neighborhood had it pretty good when it came to lots of great coffee shops, but on Pearl street in Boulder it seems like they are practically stacked on top of one another. The Laughing Goat was one of the favorites, and the one that I spent the most time in. This place has lots of comfortable seating, they serve Kaladi Brothers coffee, and they have a pretty solid breakfast burrito. A large coffee came in a 16-ounce glass tumbler with an insulator awkwardly forced over the bottom, which is my new favorite way to have my coffee served. I will definitely go back next time I'm in the neighborhood. read more

If you know Boulder, home of pseudo hippies and trustifarians, you know Penny Lane--premiere coffee shop/open mic sport for the like (not to discredit-- it truly was epic)..but, sadly...no more. And, what has come in its place? The Laughing Goat. Catering to the same crowd in a replacement kind of way, but also appealing to hipster/death metal sensibility, somehow. I think the staff have great taste in music (with the exception of They Might Be Giants but I Will excuse that mistake). Anyone who plays The Islands melts my heart. Coffee is good. Interior design is better. Lighting, even better still! (Of most importance!) Great tables and booths. You might even pick up someone here. Many new faces as far as I'm concerned. Always (fresh?) new artwork dusting the walls (even if it was created in Boulder). The only thing...last fall there were serious flies. (I cannot deal!) I really like this place. I love that they sell Kombucha (mmmmm fizzy vinegar drink....give it to me), and their Chai is divine. Also, they always have really cool art displayed. Met a friend for a serious conversation couple o'weeks ago....couldn't help but giggle when everytime I looked to my left I got a shot of a fuzzy ponani on the wall. Made the convo easier though. Laughing Goat. The semi-replacement of the beloved Penny Lane. In reality its a wonderful coffee house. Their coffee is superb, the ambiance is lovely, the barista's are friendly and talented, the patrons are hip, and even the music is good. It must be hard for the poor Laughing Goat to live in the shadow of Penny Lane with all of its classic, grungy, O.G. Boulder hippies, and super weird art and decor. But i think that they have done a wonderful job replacing the much needed local coffee house on east pearl. Laughing Goat, you are a perfect addition. Ah, my favorite place to go when I've run out of date ideas! I can always count on a good, or at least interesting musical performance on Saturday nights (starts at 10 PM). Keep in mind that the space is small, so try to get there a little early for the music. All the seats are good, but there are always a couple empty in the front that are certain to blast your ears away. Steer clear of those if you want to keep your ears. I can also speak for the dessert and coffee, which was delicious and local. This would be a great place to study on a Sunday morning, eat your weight in pie on a Sunday afternoon or flirt with a hot college girl on a Sunday evening. It isn't perfect, but I've returned many times due to the lack of decent Boulder cafe alternatives. Laughing Goat shamelessly pursues the indie/hipster feel (a bit too much), from the rotating wall-art to the tatted baristas in skinny-jeans, but as a self-admitted Seattle coffee snob, the brew is quite good. The place itself is pretty cozy and the ambiance right on when not overly crowded or noisy. Unfortunately, volume-challenged gossipers too frequently fill the chairs with their rears and the air with their jeers (ya like that?)... not the fault of the LG, but more so their location, a good business move I suppose. But why the frequent live music? Is it really worth booting so many clients from their comfortable seats on a regular basis? read more

To the rest of you who are sad that the help is rude... Did it ever occur to you that they are pissed off because they have to look at your whiney ass all day? I'm not much of a coffeehouse-goer - I don't even drink coffee - and that may invalidate my review for you right off the bat. That's fine. But I like the Laughing Goat better than any other coffeehouse in town. They've got a giant selection of tea - black, green, and herbal. Their hot chocolate's fantastic. So are most of their pastries. The attitude that the previous reviewers have dealt with - I haven't seen or heard it. I've only seen it over at Folsom Street Coffee. The Laughing Goat has live music pretty much constantly and there's usually no cover, just a passed-around tip jar and CD's for sale afterwards. The crowd isn't stiff and tomb-silent during sets, nor are they so raucous you can't hear the music. It's just right for me, like the Baby Bear's furniture is for Goldilocks. Tonight we brought Boggle and forgot to bring paper and pens, but not to worry... the non-snobby counter staff gladly lent us a spiral of receipt paper and a few pens. There's a branch inside the CU library and they've kept me supplied with emergency breakfast burritos. I do wish both branches had more kinds of food, though. Best part of this shop is the experience of sitting on the patio on a nice day, sipping on whatever comes in a glass -- I really like that they use glass here. Gives a touch of class, I think. The front of the house/patio is like a 5 start experience for me, but my feelings drop to a 3 as I make my way farther back. Towards the back the interior just seems to need work, some tables fixing... and worst yet... have you seen the fly catchers behind the coffee bar? You get a perfect view into it from the back of the house, and it's... unappetizing. I also love that they regularly have live music at night. I don't make it out for these often, but it's nice to know that there's that alternative to beer drinking (even though I love beer drinking). Anyway, the place and atmosphere is mostly awesome. There were a few singers preforming on this Saturday night so we decided to stop by. The live music was great but my cappuccino sucked. I had high expectations of their coffee from checking out their website. I'm guessing the better baristas work the morning shifts while the less experienced take the later shifts. The website showed nice coffee art so it was disappointing when my cap came with no art. Not only did the guy was not an artist but he needs to learn how to pour the foam milk without spilling it all over. So I was not impressed with the presentation. No big deal as long as it still taste good. Nope, one sip and I knew I was heading to the toilet. Needless to say, it was my worst coffee experience. My bad luck. I'm sure if I go back, the next cup wouldn't cause so much drama. But I'll make sure I pack extra TP with me when I return. read more
