Nice room, friendly host, close to Lava Beds National Park, but no WiFi would have been better that non functional WiFi.

The Good: Restaurant on premises…read moreSaloon on premises Coffee shop on premises Small coffee and pastry for breakfast included in room price Friendly staff Free Wi-Fi Nice bath amenities Mattress in my room was a newer one (and quite comfortable) Character Features (might be good or not depending on your taste/preferences/needs): Cute, old hotel (historic, even) Occasionally creaky wood floors (due to above) No TV in room (at least in my room - considering the hotel I was ok with that) All rooms are on the second floor No elevator It's clear someone loves this hotel and is doing their best to keep it relevant but to maintain the historic charm. No, everything isn't new and perfect, but no one should be expecting that in a hotel such as this. It was fun to wander around guessing maybe what room was used for what purpose long ago. All staff encountered were friendly and helpful. We stayed on a Saturday and it was karaoke night at the saloon. Lots of regulars that had fun taking turns singing. It was also prom night so we had the privilege of being able to see a young couple dressed to the nines come in to dine at the restaurant and a few gussied up young ladies come in the saloon so mom (the bartender) could take some photos of them before they headed out. Overall it was a welcoming place and we felt included. My one and only nitpick is that I'm not sure it's suited for those with disabilities (I'm guessing that's largely due to the building being built when it was). I'd stay here again without hesitation.

"Are you sure about this?" I asked my husband as we pulled up at the Wagon Wheel. In looking at…read morereviews on other web sites, this one popped up with four and five star ratings, even if one of them started off "Don't be afraid to stay here." We would have driven on by without that encouragement and that would have been our loss. Because Wagon Wheel is a good place for an overnight stay. In the context of other available lodging in Alturas we are fans for sure. GOOD LOCATION: The setting is quiet, convenient to the downtown area (such as it is for Alturas). LOW RATES: The rates are low (we paid $50). COMFORTABLE AND CLEAN ROOMS: Big rooms. The best part is everything is absolutely, spotlessly, sparkling clean. Beds were comfy enough. Decor was of down-home-cozy and all nice and fresh for bedding and carpeting that seemed new. Refrigerator, microwave and coffee pot in the room as well as good TV reception. HOMESPUN CHECK IN PROCESS & FRIENDLY OWNERS: When you make a reservation you are told to pick up the keys at the Wagon Wheel Cafe adjacent to the Motel. The folks on the phone and when we fetched the key were the epitome of frliendliness. CAFE ASSOCIATED: We ate at the cafe for a good breakfast (see separate review) at the next morning. Homemade biscuits, good eggs, friendly service by the owner herself and homemade pie too. We recommend it. ACCESSIBILITY LIMITS: We are increasingly aware of accessibility these days as I have MS. While some web sites tagged this as wheelchair accessible it is not. That would be important for a visitor who used a wheelchair to know in advance. Here are the accessibility barriers that make this non ADA compliant: 1) : there is about a 4" step up to the room (although there is apparently a portable ramp available at the restaurant to take to the room if needed), 2) there are no grab bars or transfer space at the toilet, 3) the sink would not be roll up accessible, and 4) ) the shower is not accessible - no bench and no adjustable shower head. However, there is a good amount of clear floor space in the bathroom and door opening to the bathroom is ample. There is a grab bar in the shower over tub. People with mobility limits who are still able to stand would find this useful. But our friends who rely on wheelchairs full time would not find this met their needs. It is not ADA compliant.. Just a heads up if that also describes your situation. BOTTOM LINE: Next time we stay in Alturas, Wagon Wheel will be our first choice for lodging.

My man and I stayed here for one night. It wasn't that bad! At least the room was clean!…read more The bed was comfortable enough and there was AC. The shower was cramped, but it worked well. The toilet sometimes didn't flush, but it did after waiting a few minutes. There's a fridge that kept our food and water cold. There's also a microwave but we didn't use it. There's cable so it was nice to wind down and relax with a movie. On our way out to dinner, there was a guy sitting under a tree by our room, which was unnerving. How long was he there? I'm glad he wasn't there anymore when we came back. This motel is in a town with a population of 648. There's a museum across the street that was fun to visit. For breakfast, the hostess at the motel recommended the golf club. We went to a cool coffee shop to get iced coffee to go. For dinner, there's a pizza place and a restaurant in a hotel not too far from the motel. This town doesn't have a lot going on. As a matter of fact, there are a lot of buildings/businesses closed. My man and I were predicting that this place might be a ghost town in a couple of years. However, we drove here from Mt Shasta and Castle Crags, then visited Burney Falls, and Lassen Volcanic National Park!

Essex Motel - Disgusting, dirty and gross! $49/night for a reason. I'd give Skid Row a higher rating!

Don't be fooled by the outside. Traveled here for the day to see some property so we needed a room…read morefor the night. This whole area looks like it has not been updated the last 40 years..... It's like stepping back to the 70s. My sister and I decided to look around, it's Sunday so looks like no one works on Sundays and most are at church. Anyway we called to find out rates and they are reasonable, we stopped went in to the office and asked to see the rooms first ( my sister is picky). Anyway as we walked to look at the room I was talking to the owner's son about what brought them out here and he explained that they wanted to start their own business and purchased this place 2 months ago so they have been working hard to fix it up. The rooms look good, beds are comfy, bedding clean and the rooms smelled clean. They are still working on making it better.... Had to call the front desk a couple times to check the toilet ( wasn't flushing well) and the TV ( couldn't figure the cable box) but the young son came over right away and took care of it and was very apologetic. They are priced reasonable and the rooms are nice, give them a chance. I hope they do well here.

Those five-star reviews are LIES!!! That's got to be the WORST room I have ever seen in my life!…read more Notice the one photo they submitted, which hardly showed the hotel at all! I would've submitted pics of the room, but it was so damn dark it would be worthless. The room had one low-watt bulb on the ceiling. There was a tiny lamp on a side table next to the bed which consumed the entire room! The room was so small that you had to turn sideways to get to the restroom. So NOT ADA compliant!! I didn't go 2 steps past the door, which by the way was at the side of the bed! So, don't ask me about the bathroom. There was a counter on the other side of the bed which held the small microwave, refrigerator and something else because there was absolutely NO SPACE for them to go anywhere else! The only tiny window was above the small, old swamp cooler in the window, and inaccessible. The floor!!.... GROSS BEYOND MEASURE!! So thankful I left my dog in the van while I looked at the room. I felt I needed to disinfect my shoes after walking just 2 feet in through the door. The room costs $49/night. I guess if you're used to staying on Skid Row, living in a crack house, living on the streets or accustomed to staying at some "pay by the hour" hotel, then this is your place. I already paid for two nights, and somehow felt guilty that I wouldn't stay there. Weird, I know! So I ate the $49 + tax but ensured I got my refund for the second night. If that manager had any integrity whatsoever, he wouldn't have charged me at all. I think I may have to report that place to the Board of Health! STAY AWAY!! Lesson of the day... If it looks suspect, do NOT PAY until you see the room first!
