Back to back events over 4th of July weekend they totally dropped the ball. Hope the new ownership get it together

New management, not any better than the last change of hands. Management seems to be severely lacking in professionalism. Revolving door of employees should tell you what kind of practices they keep. read more

Wow: that's an unforgettable experience for sure! I think we found out who the ghost of the hotel is: it must be a waiter from the restaurant!!! We made a reservation for 7 o'clock and 15 minutes in, one of my friends went to get the menus for us. At 7.40 we are still there waiting: no water, no waiter, no ghosts.... I then walked to the hosts and mentioned we would be ready to order, they literally make guttural noises and gave me side eyes while I'm walking away. At that point we decided to leave. I feel they should be ashamed. They definitely lost any future business (hotel, saloon and restaurant) from us 6 guests and our friends. Very very disappointing On the bright side, not every restaurant in Alturas is lame: we had good hamburgers at the LazyO read more

Could not get served in the restaurant. I've never felt more disrespected. My party waited 40 minutes and never even got a glass of water. I spent $1000 to stay there eight days. read more

If you want an old timey experience, this is it! You feel like you have walked back in time, but with more comfortable beds and free wifi, so you can enjoy your time without being completely off the grid. We had the bridal suite, which was a large two room suite and was very quiet at night and lots of nice pictures of days gone past. We also had coffee in the downstairs cafe and dinner at the saloon. I have to say, Mallory, the bartender/cook/waitress, was amazing. We got a combo pizza that was huge and awesomely delicious for a very reasonable price. She also made up some chicken wings that were more like chicken lollipops and were awesome. Loved taking a moment to just enjoy being in this beautiful old hotel and saloon. read more

I didn't stay at the hotel but we ate there for a large family event with o er 30 of us descending on the restaurant. I can't say enough about the staff at the Nile's. There was a near-town-wide power outage right after most of us ordered our food, which lasted all night and basically shut down all cooking in the kitchen. The staff adjusted quickly and brought out huge platters of cold cuts, cheeses, salads, watermelon and other fruit - doing all of it in the dark. They were amazing and I am so thankful we were there. read more

The Good: Restaurant on premises Saloon on premises Coffee shop on premises Small coffee and pastry for breakfast included in room price Friendly staff Free Wi-Fi Nice bath amenities Mattress in my room was a newer one (and quite comfortable) Character Features (might be good or not depending on your taste/preferences/needs): Cute, old hotel (historic, even) Occasionally creaky wood floors (due to above) No TV in room (at least in my room - considering the hotel I was ok with that) All rooms are on the second floor No elevator It's clear someone loves this hotel and is doing their best to keep it relevant but to maintain the historic charm. No, everything isn't new and perfect, but no one should be expecting that in a hotel such as this. It was fun to wander around guessing maybe what room was used for what purpose long ago. All staff encountered were friendly and helpful. We stayed on a Saturday and it was karaoke night at the saloon. Lots of regulars that had fun taking turns singing. It was also prom night so we had the privilege of being able to see a young couple dressed to the nines come in to dine at the restaurant and a few gussied up young ladies come in the saloon so mom (the bartender) could take some photos of them before they headed out. Overall it was a welcoming place and we felt included. My one and only nitpick is that I'm not sure it's suited for those with disabilities (I'm guessing that's largely due to the building being built when it was). I'd stay here again without hesitation. read more

Party of six that had a reservations for 7 PM. We sat ignored for 40 minutes only to catch an attitude asking for water. We left and went to nearby restaurant where they asked if we came in from the Niles. Apparently it's common. I've been a guest at the hotel for a week and I will never return because of the way we were treated at the restaurant. One star because you cannot give negative stars. read more

Stayed here last year on the way to Oregon and really enjoyed my stay. Very historical and unique. Hotel staff and restaurant/bar staff are very attentive and kind. One of a kind stay and I will definetely visit again. read more

DO NOT STAY HERE. They have a saloon downstairs that is super noisy so you will not have any quiet time in your room until after the bar closes. They appear to care more about the bar patrons than their hotel guests. I will never come back to this hotel. I can only put one star to post but would have put zero if possible. read more

Tucked away in the back of the Niles Hotel is a restaurant and saloon. It wasn't on Yelp but came recommended by hotel staff at the Trailside Inn. The Niles is where the locals go. You'll feel it when you walk through the saloon and get the "you're not from around here" look from a couple gals sitting at the bar. Keep walking. You'll find the dinning room and feel welcomed. The waitstaff was very kind and hard working. Our food was great! We split a Cobb salad and the Nile Pizza which was chicken, bacon, artichoke, ranch sauce and jalapeño. The pizza is not on the regular menu. We knew to ask for it thanks to Trailside. Very good crispy thick crust and the top looks like it was broiled for a minute or two. The table across from us had steaks, ribs, potatoes... it all looked great. The decor reminds me of a McMenamins if your from Oregon. It's clean and rustic looking. Primitive Farm tchotchkes every where to look at and enjoy. Lots of character. Trailside said this was the best restaurant in town. Totally believe it. If you find yourself in Alturas stop here. You'll be happy with your choice. read more

I love this grand lady. The folks who rescued her have done an excellent job restoring her, updating as necessary while maintaining all that historical charm. Staying here is truly being surrounded by history. The walls host hundreds of photos and paintings of the founders and other locals. The woodwork is polished, the bead board clean, and the furnishings are gorgeous. I stayed in the Queen Suite, otherwise known as the "wedding suite." Three room interconnect: the bedroom, a sitting room, and the bathroom which boasts--wait for it--a five foot six claw foot tub! It was heavenly. The room was spotless, the mattress was comfy, the thread-count on the sheets was high, and it was soooo quiet. I slept beautifully, though I am so often a restless sleeper. This hotel also has a good restaurant, which I wanted to try but didn't due to the amount of people in there. There's also a nice coffee shop with a little free library, which I did try. Great Covid safety practices in place and an excellent London Fog to drink. There is also a saloon. A real one. With reasonably priced drinks. And a huge ballroom, where tables were laid for a wedding seating 120. Yikes! Nicely set up for those who are into that sort of thing. People always say Alturas is a stop along the way to Reno from K Falls, or vice versa. Well, here's the thing: this area has so much to offer in natural resources and outdoor activities that I hope to spend three nights in Hotel Niles while I day trip away. I invite you to consider something similar. read more

We stayed here on our way up to Oregon on a whim, and SO glad we did! I was skeptical looking at our choices in Alturas but this truly was a little gem. The staff were extremely accommodating, we arrived after the front desk was closed and they had everything set to make sure we were easily able to get into our room with our sleepy kiddos without a hitch. The rooms are really neat and have such awesome historical touches- and were also very clean and comfortable- would stay here a million times over again for sure! The little coffee shop downstairs was also great and the customer service was just excellent! Enjoyed our complementary coffee and pastry in the am with the kids and the ambiance was very old world classy. read more

This is one of my favorite places in our little community. Everything is perfect! From morning coffee and delicious breakfast. A nice salad for lunch with a pastry to go!! Just picked up our order to go. Pizzas Classic combo with 1/2 jalapeño creamy garlic on one side. These pizzas are loaded! Don't for get to add chicken wing too!! Enjoy and be thankful you came. read more

Got room 214 this time (The Birds and The Bee's). Pretty spacious and located near the outside metal stairs. Room was very clean and even felt clean and was bright and light. Friendly folks and the wifi works OK but DO NOT expect a phone OR a TV. These are the big things that keep me coming back and as a matter of fact this is my go to when on the road and in Alturas. Easy check in (at the saloon downstairs) and easy check out (leave your key in your room or go down to the Starbucks downstairs and turn it in and get your free coffee and scone!). Looking forward to coming back here with the Mrs soon! read more

What this hotel lacks in modern comforts, it makes up for with history, charm, and customer service. The rooms are decorated - albeit sometimes creepily - in a way that takes you back. The beds are small and kind of squeaky but you're really staying here for the ambience. The shared areas (upstairs has multiple lounges for guests to share a pizza, beers, and socialize) and the bar downstairs is a ton of fun. If modern luxuries are your thing while traveling, this is not the place for you. But I really enjoy the old-school decor and even the ghost stories (it may or may not be haunted). read more

I don't know what the other lodging options are in Alturas, and I probably never will know, because I won't stay anywhere but The Niles. Over a hundred years old, it is a one of a kind. Beautifully preserved, and decorated with lovely artwork and interesting historical photographs. I lingered sometimes in the second-floor hallway just admiring the artwork. All the rooms have names, describing the decor. I stayed in the "Birds and Bees" Room (Not as hokey as it may sound, Room 214, I think). The room faced away from the street, so it was pretty quiet - most of the time. There was some noise (but not a lot) from the patio restaurant and early morning truck deliveries, but it wasn't a problem. I am a serious Noise-Hater, and the small, infrequent bit of noise did not bother me at all. I will happily stay there again, and happily hang with the birds and bees in Room 214. read more

I was visiting family and decided to venture out and get something to eat and being there was not much out there I found this place Niles Hotel. I walked in the restaurant was seated and i kind of looked around and the food looked really good I ordered a rib eye steak and was blown away. The steak was cooked to perfection it was tender and juicy.. I would say one of the best steaks I have eaten I for sure will be back and the staff were friendly read more

THIS PLACE IS HAUNTED!!!!! do NOT go up to the third floor, especially room 312! weird noises, odd smells, and creepy sounds. Things fly through the air and not a great feeling when you are trying to sleep read more

Very classy eclectic spot with extra finesse! They have rejuvenated this old hotel to a beautiful state. The bar that opens at 3 pm is an old western bar with a lot of ambiance. Oh great drinks too. The main dining room is awesome! They serve prime beef here so it's always excellent. The daily specials are worth checking out. The wine list also very good and covers most meals. Service is friendly and accommodating. This is a must if you're in town. They also have a historic hotel with a lot of interesting history. I'm adding this spot to Yelp and is a must see in Alturas. read more

Had a very nice stay at this old hotel. All staff members were very helpful and accommodating. What I liked most was I didn't have to leave for dinner as they restaurant and bar that was onsite was very convenient, with good food and a pleasant barkeep. In the morning there is an on-site coffee shop, what more could you ask for. The actual room was quaint. And I was able to get it nice and warm using the space heater. What more could you ask for in a small town?! Give this place a shot... read more

Very historic. Someone else mentioned that the check-in desk is at the bar, thanks for that ..... I might never have found it otherwise. I thought there was a restaurant here but no luck. My room had a very "authentic " old west feel. There's a window over the door that lets in a lot of light from that hallway. No TV. But I did have my own bathroom and it was a nice hot shower. read more

Excellent service and food by Kim. Cute, quaint dining experience. Ribeye was a tad well done, but this was made up by an amazing slice of cheesecake topped with cherries. If we ever come here again, we will definitely be stopping back in. read more

We didn't actually stay here because we walked in the door to a bar. We asked where to check in and the petite blonde bartender said right here with an attitude. When we asked about a room with a king bed she said it was $155. I told her the internet said it was $90,to which she snottily replied "That's for a full." I asked about a queen and she said it was $95. We didn't care about the price discrepancy, it was her snotty, rude attitude. We wound up going down the street to a very nice hotel. read more

After passing this hotel over in favor of a chain hotel during my travel these last 10 years, I finally had the opportunity to make other choices and I am SO glad I did. I had room 1, it was comfortable, clean and well appointed. This is my new "go to" place when in Alturas on business! read more

Looked like a nice historic place to have a drink and some food but I couldn't get the time of day.... Bartender said hello and then left me sitting at the bar for 15 minutes while the locals apologized for her service. Complete waste of time. I suggest popping into look at the pics on the wall and leaving. read more

Don't count on this place! They lost my reservation!! Though I had an email confirmation printed out, the check-in clerk didn't even want to look at it. "You are not in the system, we are sold out and we can't help you." When called later to complain no one would even answer the phone. Finding another hotel in town and going out to eat we heard that such behavior by Niles is not unusual. Hotel Niles claims to be a "Historic Hotel", "Historically Unreliable" in my opinion. Find another place or keep driving to next town is my recommendation. read more

We were staying over in Alturas and decided to come to the Niles Hotel for dinner. There was some sort of a reunion going on in the Saloon but the High Grade Room was quiet. There were several guests already enjoying their dinner and they were able to accommodate us without a prior reservation. Boyfriend and I ordered the rib eye and began with a cup of soup. Service was laid back (note I didn't say slow - you're no longer in the city so it's just a different pace) and hey where were we going to go? So a nice romantic dinner in this refurbished hotel and beautiful dining room with restored antique fixtures and decor. Gorgeous! Victorian lamps, hammered tin ceilings, beautiful pictures - the owners really put a lot of effort into restoring this place. The food finally came, the soup was clam chowder, not too thick, tasty and did the job. But the steak oh boy, a honking piece of beef, cooked to the correct temperature, and with a great char on it. Mine needed just a smudge more salt but otherwise it was fantastic! We couldn't finish our portions and doggy bagged them for tomorrow. Wine and beer were cheap like $6 a glass. All in all, a nice dinner in a romantic setting. I wish this place much success. read more

My wife and I were on an 11-day road trip, and decided to stop here. As a historical writer and researcher, I love the kitchy older places as a nice break from the sterile chains. The first challenge is finding where to check in. They say to check in at "the bar," but when you get there and park, there is no sign indicating where the bar is. Eventually, when you find it, the bar may or may not be staffed. Nonetheless, that is the only hiccup. The hotel itself is as expected of an 100-year-old hotel: old photos and portraits on the wall, squeaky hallways, antique furniture. (By the way, the couch in the second-floot sitting area has a broken leg, so be careful when you sit there.) It was a really neat place to walk around in and explore. There is a restaurant and coffee shop on premises, and there are lots of other establishments within walking distance. We were there on a Saturday night into Sunday, so most places were closed, but it's good to know there are places available outside the hotel. We did eat at a burger joint next to the high school, and at the Wagon Wheel restaurant down the road a bit. Both worth checking out. This is not, however, a review of those places, but of the hotel itself. Very charming and homey. We like that they have a collection of books for people to read and even take with them if they want, but as a researcher I always bring my own supply of reading so that wasn't an issue. I enjoyed sitting in the second floor sitting area in the morning, relaxing and reading before we took off to our next destination. There is free coffee available for guests at the coffee shop, which also is full of antiques. (I learned to type on a typewriter just like the one in the coffee shop!) The only problem is having to negotiate a dark hallway to get there from your room. They really should put some lights along there. There are also a couple of meeting rooms, which are incongruously furnished with modern 2000's-era office furniture for those who are there on business. The only sticking point: As I was filling up our ice chest on the way out, a staff member sharply reprimanded me, saying "Don't take it all! There are others who need it!" (Why have an ice machine for people to use if people can't use it? We needed ice to keep my wife's medical equipment cold.) I just pretended I didn't hear him yelling at me. Other than that, everyone else was super nice. * * * Word of caution: The rooms are on the second floor, accessible via rickety staircases. I'm not sure what they do for guests in wheelchairs, but if you are disabled, be sure to ask about that before you book. There is a third floor, but it's closed off to the public. I think that's staff residences up there, but I'm not sure. TAKEAWAY: We enjoyed our stay, and Niles will definitely be out first choice if we come back through Alturas and need overnight accommodations. read more

Recommended to us for great pizza with sturdy crust by our hotel staff; this was filling and delicious! We rode our motorcycles over 300 miles over highway 299 and worked up a deep hunger while doing so. The Cobb salad had fresh greens and delicious ham, and the thick crusted hot spicy Niles House pizza was a winner. Jalapeño ranch sauce under crunchy bacon, hot artichokes and ooey gooey cheese baked on top make your mouth sing. These badass babes couldn't get enough although two hefty pieces each filled us up. We gave our last few pieces to our hotel clerk as we can't take it with us. The saloon at the hotel just started making pizzas so be sure and ask for the pizza menu. You won't regret it! read more

We're locals, and this review is for the Niles Restaurant. Their pizza is usually really good, but tonight it was not. The Hawaiian BBQ pizza had way too much BBQ sauce on it. Couldn't taste anything else. Disappointed. read more

Cute, historic hotel and dining room are adorbs!! Truly, this location is worth a stay on its own merits. If you are staying in Alturas, it's clearly the best hotel in town. The bed was comfy!! Neat building, lots of interesting history and a comfortable room. Will definitely stay again if I find myself in alturas again.

OMG! The food is to die for. I never would have thought that in the middle of nowhere there would be a 5 star restaurant. The Niles Hotel is amazing! We stopped there recently on a road trip and were assigned the "African Safari Room," commemorating one of the owners' (I think) Peace Corps work in Africa a while back. The room was super unique and we loved that it was absent phone and TV. The décor in the hallways and room was very interesting and historical. The Saloon and Restaurant were hospitable, tasty, and fun; some locals chatted us up at the Saloon and even kindly shared their appetizers with us city folk. We honestly want to take another drive up to Alturas just to stay at the Niles, though sadly, there is *VERY* little else to do in town other than hang out at the hotel. If you're passing through, I highly recommend the Niles. read more

Disregard any review up above that is below 4-stars. I haven't even gone to bed yet and this place EXCEEDS expectations. Massive room for $99 hosts my wife and 3 kiddos.
