Tucked away in the back of the Niles Hotel is a restaurant and saloon. It wasn't on Yelp but came recommended by hotel staff at the Trailside Inn. The Niles is where the locals go. You'll feel it when you walk through the saloon and get the "you're not from around here" look from a couple gals sitting at the bar. Keep walking. You'll find the dinning room and feel welcomed. The waitstaff was very kind and hard working. Our food was great! We split a Cobb salad and the Nile Pizza which was chicken, bacon, artichoke, ranch sauce and jalapeño. The pizza is not on the regular menu. We knew to ask for it thanks to Trailside. Very good crispy thick crust and the top looks like it was broiled for a minute or two. The table across from us had steaks, ribs, potatoes... it all looked great. The decor reminds me of a McMenamins if your from Oregon. It's clean and rustic looking. Primitive Farm tchotchkes every where to look at and enjoy. Lots of character. Trailside said this was the best restaurant in town. Totally believe it. If you find yourself in Alturas stop here. You'll be happy with your choice.

Got room 214 this time (The Birds and The Bee's). Pretty spacious and located near the outside metal stairs. Room was very clean and even felt clean and was bright and light. Friendly folks and the wifi works OK but DO NOT expect a phone OR a TV. These are the big things that keep me coming back and as a matter of fact this is my go to when on the road and in Alturas. Easy check in (at the saloon downstairs) and easy check out (leave your key in your room or go down to the Starbucks downstairs and turn it in and get your free coffee and scone!). Looking forward to coming back here with the Mrs soon!

I was visiting family and decided to venture out and get something to eat and being there was not much out there I found this place Niles Hotel. I walked in the restaurant was seated and i kind of looked around and the food looked really good I ordered a rib eye steak and was blown away. The steak was cooked to perfection it was tender and juicy.. I would say one of the best steaks I have eaten I for sure will be back and the staff were friendly

Very classy eclectic spot with extra finesse! They have rejuvenated this old hotel to a beautiful state. The bar that opens at 3 pm is an old western bar with a lot of ambiance. Oh great drinks too. The main dining room is awesome! They serve prime beef here so it's always excellent. The daily specials are worth checking out. The wine list also very good and covers most meals. Service is friendly and accommodating. This is a must if you're in town. They also have a historic hotel with a lot of interesting history. I'm adding this spot to Yelp and is a must see in Alturas.

"Are you sure about this?" I asked my husband as we pulled up at the Wagon Wheel. In looking at…read morereviews on other web sites, this one popped up with four and five star ratings, even if one of them started off "Don't be afraid to stay here." We would have driven on by without that encouragement and that would have been our loss. Because Wagon Wheel is a good place for an overnight stay. In the context of other available lodging in Alturas we are fans for sure. GOOD LOCATION: The setting is quiet, convenient to the downtown area (such as it is for Alturas). LOW RATES: The rates are low (we paid $50). COMFORTABLE AND CLEAN ROOMS: Big rooms. The best part is everything is absolutely, spotlessly, sparkling clean. Beds were comfy enough. Decor was of down-home-cozy and all nice and fresh for bedding and carpeting that seemed new. Refrigerator, microwave and coffee pot in the room as well as good TV reception. HOMESPUN CHECK IN PROCESS & FRIENDLY OWNERS: When you make a reservation you are told to pick up the keys at the Wagon Wheel Cafe adjacent to the Motel. The folks on the phone and when we fetched the key were the epitome of frliendliness. CAFE ASSOCIATED: We ate at the cafe for a good breakfast (see separate review) at the next morning. Homemade biscuits, good eggs, friendly service by the owner herself and homemade pie too. We recommend it. ACCESSIBILITY LIMITS: We are increasingly aware of accessibility these days as I have MS. While some web sites tagged this as wheelchair accessible it is not. That would be important for a visitor who used a wheelchair to know in advance. Here are the accessibility barriers that make this non ADA compliant: 1) : there is about a 4" step up to the room (although there is apparently a portable ramp available at the restaurant to take to the room if needed), 2) there are no grab bars or transfer space at the toilet, 3) the sink would not be roll up accessible, and 4) ) the shower is not accessible - no bench and no adjustable shower head. However, there is a good amount of clear floor space in the bathroom and door opening to the bathroom is ample. There is a grab bar in the shower over tub. People with mobility limits who are still able to stand would find this useful. But our friends who rely on wheelchairs full time would not find this met their needs. It is not ADA compliant.. Just a heads up if that also describes your situation. BOTTOM LINE: Next time we stay in Alturas, Wagon Wheel will be our first choice for lodging.

There was a cigarette butt on the floor of the bathroom behind the toilet. The room smelled of smoke. The light switch by the door had dirt on it. Breakfast is a little better than some as it includes instant oatmeal packs, cold cereal, juice, milk, apples, Hostess cupcakes, Oreo cookies, Twinkies, and did I mention DING-DONGS? And yes coffee. Heidi is the manager. She appears to live onsite and is super friendly and helpful! I'm reviewing room 10. My first thought when entering the room was "cute as a button and about the same size." (:-) This single bed room is the smallest room I've ever seen. If you have a lot of stuff & you need to spread out, but only need one bed, I recommend you get a room with two beds. There is no closet or table or dresser. Just a COMFORTABLE bed, nightstand with light that includes plugs for charging which is another reason I'm giving 5 stars. So many budget hotels do not have enough outlets. This itty bitty room ALSO includes the microwave, Refrig, coffee maker with supplies, a hairdryer which includes a handy night light, soaps, body lotion, and AWESOME NEW SOFT PLUSH TOWELS. This little place has had a facelift within a few years which upgraded the HEAT/AC unit to a modern model that kept us toasty when it was 17 degrees out. The bathroom has newer fixtures and modern tiled shower. NO CARPET. Newer hard floors. Nice flatscreen TV on the wall with Direct TV. EXCELLENT INTERNET SPEED. So basically this place has everything the big boys offer, just squished into a cute little package. I did NOT reduce stars for items that should be considered NORMAL in a very old budget motel. When you pull out your critical eye you might see a couple outdoor chairs with stuffing pulling out of worn spots in addition to other items that they seem to be continually refurbishing but haven't been gotten to yet. Those chairs really should go. But they haven't yet. Please ignore them. I always pull the sheets apart and inspect them before crawling into bed. The sheets are not new and crisp. They are well worn and I even saw a tiny slit and what appears to be a few spots that have been well scrubbed. So don't expect new sheets. At these prices it's fair for them to really use up the life of sheets before they are replaced. Everything looks and feels CLEAN even if it's not new. The mattress feels new. The sheets were soft and comfy to sleep between. There were only 2 rather small pillows but I'm betting they will give you extras if needed. I would definitely stay here again. If you find this review USEFUL please vote!

Essex Motel - Disgusting, dirty and gross! $49/night for a reason. I'd give Skid Row a higher rating!

This whole area looks like it has not been updated the last 40 years..... It's like stepping back to the 70s. My sister and I decided to look around, it's Sunday so looks like no one works on Sundays and most are at church. Anyway we called to find out rates and they are reasonable, we stopped went in to the office and asked to see the rooms first ( my sister is picky). Anyway as we walked to look at the room I was talking to the owner's son about what brought them out here and he explained that they wanted to start their own business and purchased this place 2 months ago so they have been working hard to fix it up. The rooms look good, beds are comfy, bedding clean and the rooms smelled clean. They are still working on making it better.... Had to call the front desk a couple times to check the toilet ( wasn't flushing well) and the TV ( couldn't figure the cable box) but the young son came over right away and took care of it and was very apologetic. They are priced reasonable and the rooms are nice, give them a chance. I hope they do well here.

Those five-star reviews are LIES!!! That's got to be the WORST room I have ever seen in my life!…read more Notice the one photo they submitted, which hardly showed the hotel at all! I would've submitted pics of the room, but it was so damn dark it would be worthless. The room had one low-watt bulb on the ceiling. There was a tiny lamp on a side table next to the bed which consumed the entire room! The room was so small that you had to turn sideways to get to the restroom. So NOT ADA compliant!! I didn't go 2 steps past the door, which by the way was at the side of the bed! So, don't ask me about the bathroom. There was a counter on the other side of the bed which held the small microwave, refrigerator and something else because there was absolutely NO SPACE for them to go anywhere else! The only tiny window was above the small, old swamp cooler in the window, and inaccessible. The floor!!.... GROSS BEYOND MEASURE!! So thankful I left my dog in the van while I looked at the room. I felt I needed to disinfect my shoes after walking just 2 feet in through the door. The room costs $49/night. I guess if you're used to staying on Skid Row, living in a crack house, living on the streets or accustomed to staying at some "pay by the hour" hotel, then this is your place. I already paid for two nights, and somehow felt guilty that I wouldn't stay there. Weird, I know! So I ate the $49 + tax but ensured I got my refund for the second night. If that manager had any integrity whatsoever, he wouldn't have charged me at all. I think I may have to report that place to the Board of Health! STAY AWAY!! Lesson of the day... If it looks suspect, do NOT PAY until you see the room first!
