Baked chicken, white beans, Mac and the BEST broccoli rice
    Joanna T.

The Kitchen was exactly what I wanted from a down-home Southern place. It's clear that most are regulars but even as a random I was warmly welcomed. They only serve lunch and only certain things on certain days so check the menu ahead of time. The day I visited they had fried chicken, baked chicken or smothered steak. Meals are around $9 and come with 3 sides, a bread (yeast roll or cornbread) AND cake. That's a LOT of food for $9! But - how was it? Amazing - that's how it was! I had baked chicken (white) with white beans, mac and cheese and broccoli rice, with cornbread. My chicken had wonderfully crisp, nicely seasoned skin with juicy meat. The beans were plenty good (cooked with sausage) and I really liked the super cheesy buttery mac and cheese. The broccoli rice (I had never heard of this) was the star though - just completely delicious. What else? Tea is homemade, my cornbread was BY FAR the best I've ever had - still warm and light as air - and my cake was the sweet ending to a meal that was clearly made with love. These nothing I love more than a slightly hole in the wall Southern diner and the Kitchen delivered big time. Great food, great people - and you won't leave hungry!

    Hospital delivery FTW!

My daughter was recently in the hospital for 3 weeks. She was very ill & nearly died. We are a retired military family so we have friends all over. These two flew in specifically to be with us during this time. The one thing requested was SOUL FOOD! Let me just say, The Kitchen did NOT disappoint! So much so that we had it two days in a row! Definitely a bright moment in a very dark time of our lives! Delicious!!!!

Smothered Pork Chop, greens and yams...mmmm!

The food used to be good, but it seems like over the years they have fell off. The food is disgusting. Not like it used to be won't be back.

We were greeted at the door by smiling faces and the sound of lively conversation at each of the tables we passed. This is clearly a local favorite. Our waitress was super sweet and attentive which always makes the experience in a new place better. We looked over the menu since we had never been there, but both our eyes went to the specials board which had two options on it...Hamburger Steak and Red Beans and Rice. We resolved to each get one of the options, as well as Mozzarella Sticks as a starter. The Mozzarella Sticks were incredible! Melty and hot on the inside and perfectly crispy outside. Probably won't ever come back without getting those! For my entree, I got the Red Beans with Buttered Corn and Green Beans for my sides. THAT is how you make Red Beans! It was perfectly seasoned and the sausage was smokey and flavorful. The sides were not lacking in salt or butter. If I had one critique it would be that the cornbread tasted great but was dry in the middle...a little pat of butter inside would fix that. My Dad got the Hamburger Steak and, while I did not taste it myself, it looked amazing, and I noticed several others eating it too, which may mean that it is known to be good. Those Mashed Potatoes looked delicious as well. He said it was all great. Side note...their Southern Spice All Purpose Seasoning is among the best I have ever tasted. I will be getting my hands on some of that. To sum it up...I will be back, and I'm bringing my whole family next time!

The restaurant was decorated as you would expect a good Cajun restaurant to be decorated in. Service was nice and friendly and you order at the register and they bring your food to you. Service was great even after we got our food. A server asked us if we needed refills and if we wanted them in to-go cups, which scored bonus points with me! Here's what I had on this lunch visit: The crawfish pistollette (8/10) which was a small appetizer that was bread with some crawfish etouffee on top. Bread was nicely cooked and the etouffee on top was delicious. Solid starter! The Cajun Cooking Sampler (9/10) - this was a sampler with 3 amazing dishes. I got the shrimp and crab gumbo, which is classic Louisiana gumbo and it was outstanding! The sampler also had a bowl of crawfish etouffee which was good but felt it needed a bit more etoufee to mix with the rice. Lastly, the special of the day was fish courtbouillon which was a fish in tomato based sauce over rice. I really enjoyed this as the fish has a great texture and there was a lot of flavor in the sauce. Overall, solid lunch meal in the $ to $$ range depending on what you order. Recommend you trying it for a great Cajun experience!

We arrived just a couple minutes after their 11 a.m. opening, and the place was already packed, a good sign in itself. Luckily, with only three of us, the hostess got us seated at a table right away. The exterior isn't much to look at, but stepping inside tells a different story. The interior has a sports bar meets old school diner vibe, with decor that gives the whole place a nostalgic, lived-in charm. We all decided on the Darrell's Special sandwich with jalapeño mayo, and it did not disappoint. Our waitress was fantastic the whole meal, constantly checking in, keeping our drinks filled, and making sure we didn't need anything else. Despite how busy the place was, our sandwiches came out in a surprisingly short time. The sandwich itself is a beast! A toasted, loaded bun stacked with ham, turkey, and roast beef (which I hear is made in-house), all topped with roast beef gravy, American, Swiss, and provolone cheeses, lettuce, mustard, and your choice of regular or jalapeño mayonnaise, of course we had the Jalapeño Mayo. The first bite reminded me of a warm French dip, but that impression quickly gave way to layers of different meat flavors, rounded out by the subtle heat of the jalapeño mayo. It practically melted in my mouth. Honestly, I wanted to finish the whole thing, but I didn't want to need to be rolled out of the building, so I boxed up the second half and enjoyed it again for dinner. Great food, great service, and now I understand what all the buzz was about.
