Quirky. Cozy little restaurant on US Highway 2 just outside of Hurley. Excellent food. There seems to be a lot if things assumed here: 1. All specials (appetizers, entrees, desserts) are written in a chalkboard in the entry hallway. These specials will not be repeated by waitstaff nor will they appear in writing anywhere but in the chalkboard. 2. The protocol on arriving is to walk through the entry hallway, take a sharp right into the bat area and wait, standing at end if bar until someone acknowledges your presence and registers your party. 3. You may wait awhile until anyone acknowledges or waits on you. The food here is excellent, as is the service, once you pass step 3 above. Serving sizes are generous. I highly recommend the "specials", I had the broiled Lake Superior whitefish in a bed of carmelized onions with garlic butter sauce. Suoerb! Do yourself a favor and try this little gem. The restaurant is small, but the food and service were amazing. Our waitress, Mary Ellen, was on the ball our entire meal, making sure the evening was fun. The food was wonderful, what you might expect from a fancy, cosmopolitan restaurant without the snobbiness! I had grouper with shrimp in a lobster sauce, my husband had Lemon chicken. Our friends shared a slab of ribs which proved to be too much for the two of them. A nice bonus, for like $5.00 extra, you can split an entree and each get two sides! Pretty good deal. Highly recommend. read more

Highly recommended One of the best restaurants we have been to. As a matter of fact, we ate here two days in a roll while camping. The wait can be long but so worth it; so plan accordingly. The prices are amazingly reasonable and the amount of food is fabulous. You definitely will not leave hungry; you might even have to be rolled out. The pick 2 for $22 is a great deal. This restaurant doesn't really need a review because it's the best place in town! Food is not only consistently good, but there's an excellent variety for the area. Service is friendly. The only bad thing is that it's always full, they don't take reservations for less than 5, so the wait time is long. An okay place to go if you're in town. I do think the cabin look and decor were very charming! I liked that a lot, and the service was great as well. The food was just ok for me. I had the steak and mushrooms with mashed potatoes. It was not cooked medium well as I ordered it, it was way too pink and a bit bloody. The steak was also lacking seasoning, no salt or pepper. The potatoes came in a separate bowl which is I think why they were not very hot on arrival and why the garlic butter wouldn't melt. Not a terrible place but just ok for the food quality and taste. read more

Family friendly, nice bar area, very wide range of food to choose from on menu. Weekends for dinner gets crowded so make reservations. Very clean restaurant, friendly staff and portions are BIG with soup/salad/sides too! We enjoy coming here for a family dinner when we are in Hurley visiting family. This restaurant was recommended by other patrons at another restaurant Wow what a hidden gem! Service right off the bat by Michelle was amazing! Was patient with me as I was indecisive at what to order...everything sounded good! Ended up getting the garlic Parmesan oysters and haddock and shrimp plate. The oysters were so good I couldn't stop dipping my bread in the leftover crumbs and sauce. The fish and shrimp was fried perfect. Not overly breaded and just lightly fried. My meal came with a mushroom cream soup that I finished which I normally wouldn't and also a side of polenta which was a meal in itself. I Travel all over and this was such a great surprise to find such amazing food in a small town. read more

It's a small restaurant with maybe one tiny window. It was so weird that someone decided no windows, like "oh let me build a kidnappers dream cabin...I mean restaurant." I felt like I was in an old ass wood paneled basement. We came on a busy night. There were groups huddled in the doorway. No host around, so we all just stood there. 10 minutes later a host comes and takes names, skips us and leaves. My fiancé tracks her down to get on the list. We stood and watched for 30 minutes the painfully slow manner in which tables were cleaned but still stayed empty for far too long before people were seated. There was no urgency to seat guests. When we finally got a table we ordered immediately for fear of a longer wait. We tried duck wings, burrata, and one of their specials, crab stuffed sole with chicken dumpling soup and spaetzel. Our food came surprisingly fast, but almost everything was smothered in cheese. The soup came first, it reminded me of chicken noodle soup, except with dumplings. Meh. Then the burrata, and spaetzel. The burrata was good. It was fresh with juicy cherry tomatoes and a ton of whole garlic. The spaetzel was awful. It was a glob of cheese. There was no spaetzel to be found. The duck wings were dry, overly sweet, and the Gorgonzola cheese just made it more disturbingly intense. The sole was stuffed with canned crab, then smothered in cheese. Argh. The sole itself was quite good, and cooked well. Everything else in the dish ruined it. The servers and employees were all super nice. The the food came fast when we sat, prices were decent too, but I won't return. I'd rather find a McDonald's. read more

Enjoyed a meal with 6 hungry girls the night before a half marathon. All of us had the grilled salmon & broiled shrimp with a variety of sides including soups, risotto, coke slaw, salad, broccoli & etc... Didn't want to drink so can't comment on that. We had an excellent time at the Kimball Inn for dinner last night. The service was extremely prompt, especially for how busy they were. You can tell they are a well-oiled machine here and the employees work together to provide diners with an excellent experience. They had some local beer which was a nice touch. The bartender had no problem letting us sample a few of them before making our selections. The food was very good and prices more than fair. Appetizer- We started off with shrimp cocktail. It was very good but took A LONG time to come out. Probably 20 minutes or so. The waiter said that it takes a long time to make it because they freshly boil and chill the shrimp. An appetizer is supposed to come out quickly and should never purposefully take 20 minutes to prepare. Entree- then ordered the honey fried chicken which came with soup or salad. The beef barley soup was out of this world amazing. The beef was so incredibly tender. The chicken was good but I've had better. Dessert- the portions here are SO large that there's no way we'd ever have room for dessert unless we shared an entree. We mentioned the large portion ordeal to the waiter and he said their #1 complaint is the overbearing portion size. We felt very bad wastIng food but had nowhere to put it in our hotel. I kid you not, I saw them bring out an entree on a large family sized serving platter and another on a pie plate. I think this restaurant could easily be a 5 star place but they need to listen to their customers and decrease portion sizes while also making sure their appetizer options can come out promptly. read more

This is the first time we have been disappointed in the Kimball Inn. Mid October and the dining room was so cold that we all wore our coats to eat. French Onion soup was lukewarm and had a slice of bread floating in it. There was no traditional melted cheese cover on the soup. There was no cheese at all. Half of the entrees arrived and five minutes later the rest arrived. All of the food was lukewarm. The gravy that came with my Flatiron steak had dried shaved pieces of meat in it and was hard to chew. We live several hours away but drive up to the Kimball because the food is always amazing. Not tonight. We are hoping this was a one time thing. read more

Visited Kimball Inn while in the area to ski. Great atmosphere (northwoods log cabin), friendly and attentive staff (including the owner). The soups were awesome! The dinner was fantastic. This place gets all the stars and more. Everything was delicious and our four meals will easily be right based on the gargantuan portion sizes. I ordered the pork schnitzel with spaetzle and braised cabbage. This was outstanding. My mom ordered the pork park with polenta - also delicious. My dad's steak with mushrooms was medium rare perfection and my son's honey fried chicken was on point. My only regret was using up space on a slice of bread at the beginning of the meal - I should have saved that space for more of my meal! Our food was amazing! This place is a must see if in the area. It is all pine and has that up north feel. It's small but has a nice bar to sit at while you wait for your seat as it is a small dining area. Mushroom appetizer was delicious and I'm going to try to make that recipe when I get home for friends. My fiancée got the chicken Alfredo which was enough for her meal and then we split the leftovers the next day for lunch! I got the sirloin and lake perch. The steak was cooked perfectly mid rare and the lake perch was good. The best part is the sides I got the spaetzle and cheese which is a must have!! If you like Mac and cheese you will love this dish. And the mashed potatoes and gravy are like what you expect on thanksgiving! My only reason for four stars instead of five was our server. It took over ten minutes after my fiancée and I were clearly done eating and needed boxes as everyone here could not finish there large portions. Instead she chose to help the 8 top which was in no hurry again and again. And there was over 20 people waiting for seats so if she would have helped us and got us our tab she could have got four more in. Which bothered me but not enough to not recommend this place to any I can tell about!! Go here, it's a gem! read more

We've been coming here 20 years and there is no equivalent in the area. The only thing I ever regretted ordering was gunpowder steak. I like hot food but it was too much dry rub. That said, their chili is murderously hot but so good! Always get the soup--never the salad. Specials and the regular menu offer so many delicious options you will find something perfect for you. Owner, server and bartenders are attentive. Call ahead to reserve a table, especially for groups larger than 4 people. The wait is worth it though, and you can get drinks from the small bar. read more

My brother and dad ordered the clam linguini, which was extremely gritty. My mother ordered the au gratan potatoes, which were extremely salty. My walleye was fine, but nothing to write home about. We moved to the UP a little over a month ago. And we're told we have gotta eat here. And I'm glad we were referred! Our waitress was so nice and friendly! The food was Phenomenal and I can't wait to go back! The only problem is it'll be hard for me to order something different cause the Pork Schnitzel was SO good! My husband had Ribs & BBQ Chicken and was it ever delicious! You definitely have to try the Crispy Duck Wings! Food Quality was Top Notch. You can really taste the pride in their home cooking! Pretty good spot for dinner. They serve MASSIVELY portions. One of the nice features on the menu is their pick two for $20. They give you almost two dinner-sized portions of each choice. Dinners also come with a soup and a side. I had the steak and walleye with a side spätzle & cheese. The steak was cooked perfectly. The walleye I could leave in the lake. The spätzle was a nice spin on the classic Mac 'n cheese. My husband has their special of Hunan duck with rice. Boy was that good. Great spot to stop in for dinner. read more

The entrees here are a higher quality then you would expect for a small town in Wisconsin. The only con is the limited seating capacity which leads to a longer wait time. I have never had a bad meal here. The Old Fashions are a bit on the strong side and you win my heart with that. Last night I had the Low Country Boil. It was tasty but.... I've spent a lot of time in the south. I've learned from the Cajuns about doing a shrimp/crab boil. They never ever use green beans or onions in the boil. The orange was a nice touch but they use lemon. Citrus is good but it was the wrong one. You guys put a generous amount of shrimp in your boil. It was very good just not traditional. read more

Attempted to go to the Kimball Inn twice. The first time they were closed for "spring break". The second time was yesterday, a Wednesday, and let me just say the service was so atrocious we didn't stay for food. When we walked in we could see there were empty tables. The place was busy (it's small) but there was room. Not being there before we stood in the doorway between bar and dining trying to figure out if it was a "seat yourself" or "wait to be seated" place. Eventually we were able to stop a waitress who said "we will seat you". Ok, great. That was about 5 minutes into our wait. We waited for someone to come back by to follow up on the seating us. The bartender eventually came over after seeing us standing there for a good ten minutes and said she'd get someone to seat us. Thank you! Wait, wait, wait, wait and the bartender comes back saying they have a table ready. The bartender led us to the dining room where a waitress took over. I had briefly turned around to make sure the other 2 people in my party were following (3 of us total) and turned back to see the waitress fling/drop the menus on the table in a frustrated manner and proceed to point to me that is where we are to sit as she left. Mind you we never stopped walking though I glanced back at my party. There was no greeting, no words exchanged, just a point. So we sit and start looking at the menu. No one comes back. Water is at the table so we're patient and talking amongst ourselves. The waitress who pointed us to the table is in the room but doesn't so much as glance back at us. By this time we're tired of the wait and poor service so decide to leave. It was a good 20 minutes of waiting just to be pointed to a table and given water. At this point we decide as a group it's not a good indicator that we're likely to get food any time in the foreseeable future and frankly we don't feel like waiting for the waitress to eventually return (guessing she would at some point) so we got up and left. Sure there could have been reasons for the lag (perhaps they were short staffed) but not one greeting, nice word, explanation or pleasantly was relayed. The food may be good, but we will never know. We went over to the Iron Nugget in Hurley and had a great dinner with great service. read more

The Kimball Inn is NOT closed! It's still up and running! As far as dining goes in Hurley, the Kimball Inn is truly where it's at. The menu is fantastic, something for everyone but without being an overwhelmingly huge menu. My dinner date had the schnitzel and I had the peanut pork dish and they were both outstanding. The pork was a little bit green pepper heavy, I'd like to see more vegetable variety, but it was still wonderful. The dinner salad and soup were huge and the calamari appetizer was very good. The dipping sauce, almost a smoky tomato-y flavor was a lovely surprise. Service with a smile! Our server was sweet and efficient. Having grown up in northern Wisconsin, there are very few restaurants you long for when you're away... but Kimball Inn is definitely one I long for and can't wait to go back to! read more

Kimball Inn is a gem in the Northwoods of Wisconsin. My family & I make it a point to dine at Kimball Inn at least once while vacationing in the area. We're in the area several times a year. Their food is generally very good. I always look forward to their soups which are an elegant culinary delight. Their beef and pork dishes are always very good. Family favorite dishes are the Wiener Schnitzel, Pepper Steak and Hamburgers. The fish fry is ok imho. I suggest staying away from the seafood or fish which is not local to the area. The shrimp is usually over cooked, and I've received undercooked grouper (which lead to food poisoning...I did not know the grouper was undercooked as it was my first time eating the fish.) The service can be spotty depending upon your server. The owner always makes the rounds to ask about your meal and even chats for just a minute or two. This is a small restaurant so depending on the time of year or events in town there may be a wait for a table. When the restaurant is full, the place is noisy. The owner closes the restaurant a couple of times a year when he goes on vacation. This is not unusual for businesses in this area. It is usually closed during hunting season. All in all Kimball Inn should be on your list of restaurants to visit while in the Northwoods! read more

One of the best dinner spots in the area - possibly the best. The drawback is that the place is small and therefore has a long wait, so try to make reservations. Prices are OK, especially given the quality and scratch made meals. I could see this place getting a 5 star rating from me, but I need to go back a few more times before I do that. Plus, my last meal there was only OK. I had a great soup and sides, but my steak was not cooked properly and a little tough and flavorless. The other times I've been there it was better, so I may have just had a bad piece of meat. Watch for the nightly specials - they are normally really good. The desserts are really good too - try the cast iron skillet cookie or the bread pudding. read more
