My 10 month old has a 103 fever and throwing up and we are trying to decide whether to go to the ER or not. Your website says you are closed today but "As always, a doctor is on call 24/7." After moving back to the area, we attempted to reestablish our children as patients. After a few phone calls, we finally had a nurse return our call and register us. In the year we've been back, I think we snagged an in-person appointment one time. Our child's Lyme disease was diagnosed at urgent care. Meds refilled at urgent care. Vaccinations at urgent care. If you call, be prepared to be on hold for more than an hour. The patient portal is impossible to figure out, and there's no way to make an urgent sick visit appointment - since nobody answers the phone. We are transferring care elsewhere. read more

Just putting another review after having been back to this terribly run practice once again. The registration is now all online via text link and is apparently paid for by the pharmaceutical giant Merck. So likely, the information is being sold. We needed a Covid test for an upcoming surgery...I have been sitting in the car for 30 minutes waiting...and when I call no answer. You'd think they're super busy right? WRONG. The receptionist is just sitting there, listlessly staring at the computer. No phone ringing even happening... In my opinion, the functional operation of this practice has taken a nosedive since Dr Emily Remus bought the practice. If any other pediatricians are reading this... please open a competing practice in Alexandria!!!! I have called dozens of doctors in Northern VA and most are not accepting new patients. read more

My daughter was patient @ Kidz Doc since elementary / middle school. Over the last 3 yrs everytime we go to make an appointment they are always 2-3 months out for visits. We once again tried to make her yearly appointment as she prepares for college in the fall, and they tell my wife "she can't make an appt for our daughter because she's 18 now" . My wife and I are grown and we make appointments for each other all the time, that's stupid! They finally made an appt for her after my wife insisted. The morning of the appointment (today) they called to tell us they would not honor the appt because it's been a few years since her last visit and they had taken her out of the system. She would have to come in as a new patient (even after all the years and money that we've spent at the practice). ...and they are not seeing any new patients. Horrible experience, bad policies and even worse customer service! If you're looking for a primary care physician for your kids, go somewhere else. Your family and kids deserve better. read more

They will not see your baby unless you agree to give your baby every vaccine recommended by the CDC. I never said that I didn't want to vaccinate my baby but rather wait until my baby have a stronger inmune system to tolerate all the vaccines required by the CDC...they simply answered "we are not the doctors for you"...sounds like a business not a doctors office in my opinion. read more

As a mother of four children, I can attest to the fact that The Kidz Docs is a top-notch practice. The office staff is friendly and efficient, the waiting room in clean and cheerful, and most importantly, the providers are professional, well-educated, and thorough. Since our eldest daughter was born, we have been visiting this practice and they have seen us through ear infections, strep throat, allergies, mono, and everything in between. Although we have seen most of the providers, we typically see either Dr. Cynthia Shen or Kathleen Beckman. They spend time listening to my concerns as a mother, they listen to my children, and they engage them in the conversation. They are thorough with their examinations, and they regularly follow up after the appointment to see how my child is doing. They tend to go above and beyond with their level of care and expertise, always being sensitive to the needs and concerns of my growing adolescents/young adults. The patient portal provides easy access to medical records, such as immunization records. In addition to online information, The Kidz Docs sends appointment reminders and scheduling reminders via text, which I really appreciate as a busy parent. I highly recommend The Kidz Docs to anyone who is looking for an outstanding pediatric practice with a convenient location. read more

They are so unprofessional. You will call and be on the phone for an hour or more and when you get someone they will tell you UNFORTUNATELY, we can't make an appointment. We chose this practice for the location and the limited options in Alexandria. The doctors are fine, good bedside manner. The office staff and nurses are really great and easy to work with. Often times I found the doctors didn't ask the right questions or really investigate issues I raised. I had to take matters into my own hands and go see out a specialist. Follow your gut if you think your child has an issue. The biggest complaint, however, is the wait time. Whether it's for a scheduled well visit or walk in sick clinic, I always have to wait at least 15 minutes but more often 30+ minutes. Sick visit wait is usually one hour. I'm not sure what the reason is since the doctors don't spend much time with the patients. Regardless, it makes life much harder for parents. read more

We've been pretty happy bringing our son here over the last two years. The staff is friendly and our experience with Dr.'s Hulver, Arnold and Remus have been excellent. We like how there is a sick side and a well side waiting room for the children. While our son never likes going to the doctors in general, we feel he is well taken care of here and gets the proper physician attention that he needs. I have never felt rushed when speaking with the doctors and I feel they have always taken a lot of time to listen. Minus 1 star because As with all doctors offices, the wait is just too long especially for a toddler so he usually loses his mind before the dr. Sees us. The office has a no food policy but it is unrealistic with toddlers as they Constantly need treats and snacks to get them to behave. read more

I think the previous review complaining about the decor was unfair. The office is very clean. They have a "sick room," and a "well room." The staff is very pleasant and professional. In spite of several last minute calls when our daughter is sick, we have never been denied a visit that day. Several times I've had to pick up my daughter from school sick, and they allow me to drop in on my way home, saving us an unnecessary trip out. The staff is very knowledgable. The place is clean. The nurse was fabulous. The nurse practitioner was great. The office is small, cramped, and a bit outdated, but I loved the medical staff. P.S. - receptionists not great. In fact, I don't think they can do much...if you want to schedule an appt with a doctor, you actually need to speak with a nurse. That seems odd. Having been here numerous times, it would be nice if the doctors (save for Dr. Russell, who's a gem) didn't rush out of the room as fast as possible. I understand patients are waiting and insurance demands turn and burn, but this is important enough for us to be there, so we'd like your attention. Also, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE get rid of the nasty old chairs and ratty chair covers in the waiting room. There's NO WAY those are sanitary. Only been to a few appointments so far with my first as a newborn but very pleased thus far. Very friendly staff and receptionists. They reschedule appts well and always answer the phone. The doctors have all been very knowledgeable and tracking the baby well and offering great advice. They even offer some free stuff and have helped me a lot when I have to go alone without mommy. They don't go into alexandria hospital inova on seminary and maybe any other hospitals but I don't find that as a hindrance. The pediatricians at the hospital handled it there and then we moved on to Kidz docs just fine. The other negative or perceived negative is that the office is a little drab and run down. Doesn't seem to be a big issue with my wife or I but some might be turned off. The location is great though in a very nice area of alexandria. read more

I have 2 daughters now 16 and 20 who have both been patients of Kidz docs since the day they were born. The care providers at Kidz Docs started with their compassion and expertise before we even left the hospital. 20 years later and we are sad to move on to a new practitioner for my oldest. Dr. Arnold and Dr. Shen are amazing and have raised children of their own so they what makes a parent concerned and anxious. They take care of the parents as much as they take care of the children. The front staff is always professional and patient and kind (not always the case in doctor's offices). Compassionate, thorough, professional. Kidz Docs is the best! read more

We've always had good care at the Kidz docs. We typically see Dr. Shen, Hulver and Remus and all have been accommodating to us only wanting one vaccination at a time, answered all of our questions and we rarely wait long. I do agree, the front desk was not friendly though recently seems better than over the last few years and the place is in need of an update and good cleaning in the waiting room. read more

Please do not bring your children to this facility!! Our two day old newborn clearly had signs of jaundice, which was waved off, not once but twice!! Two days after being told there was nothing to worry about, we were smart enough to bring him to another pediatrician that was able to test his bilirubin levels on site (which Kidz Docs is not able to do!). We were admitted to Georgetown Medstar in order for our newborn son to receive phototherapy to get his bilirubin levels down (which was successful, thankfully!). Additionally, this office is extremely dirty! They have a well and sick waiting room, however when waiting sick patients are called back they walk right through the well waiting room. Suggestion, find a different pediatrician to bring your children too!!! read more

I have been taking my three kids to Kidz Docs since they were infants. It is a fantastic practice. The staff is knowledgeable and very good with children (and grown ups). They also answer questions and don't mind when I sometimes pull out a pen and paper to get everyone down. They are easy to get a hold of, they have morning walk in hours, and they work hard to squeeze you in should you have last minute appointment request. They also always have a doctor on call if you need help. They also know (and use) a lot of other local doctors should you need a specialist. read more

I have always been happy with Dr Remus however our last few visits they have been scheduling us with the nurse practitioner who recently joined. She is always behind schedule. On average she seems to be around 30 mins behind schedule. Even when we had the first appointment of the day she was nearly 30 mins late. Be warned that if you need your child's medical records provided to another doctor or hospital, you need to wait for them to email you a form, fill it out, turn it in, pay a $35 fee, and then wait up to TWO WEEKS for t hem to send it. These are MY child's medical records. Why do I need to pay. No other office does this. Very draconian policies and not customer-service oriented at all. You also need to fill out about ten new forms annually, even if none of your information has changed. The doctors are just OK, not great, if you get to see one. Many of our favorite doctors and nurses have left. Many of the nurses (not all) rush you in and out as quickly as possible and have a terrible bedside manner with children. The front office staff are rude. This place has changed into being about making a quick buck rather than providing good medical care to children. read more

This review is specifically for Dr. Hulver and telemedicine. Our family has seen Dr. Hulver for ten years. We think she is super smart and so amazing, she listens and offers sound medical advice. My kids are medically complex and she has always been right on with them and has been great at connecting with then. Due to their complexity we need to meet with her often. The telemedicine option has been a life saver for us. It's incredibly helpful for our family to meet with her and keep her up to date with what's happening with the kids specialists. More importantly, telemedicine let's us check in with her and get her opinion as our trusted doctor who has known the kids since birth. We are huge fans of telemedicine and thankful for this option at Kidz Docs. read more

I am new to the practice this was my third visit with my kids and I am very impressed. I called the practice at 3:45pm during a very busy time of year with the concern that my daughter had an ear infection, the nurse said they would squeeze me in immediately and I was able to take my daughter right away. We did not wait even five minutes in the waiting room and we were seen right away. The CNP who saw us quickly made sure my daughter got pain medication because she was in tears from the pain and diagnosed the ear infection and other symptoms. The CNP was clearly very competent. This experience was far and above my experience at my former pediatrician. read more

The doctors are average, but the front desk is, at best, incompetent and dishonest. The biggest issue has been a claim that was filed incorrectly with the insurance. The solution to the hole debacle is for the claim manager to refile the claim with the correct code so the insurance will cover it. After repeated calls to the office, we have been told several times that they will fix this. Obviously, this has not been the case after receiving several bills for the claim. The next step was to speak to the office manager. Every time we call, the office manager is busy and will call us back. My child will be likely be a grandparent before this happens. At this time the claim has been submitted to a collections agency. This prompted an immediate call to the office. Once again, we were told that the issue is taken care of and an email will be sent to verify. Never received the email and today we received another collections notice dated AFTER we spoke with the billing person, Terris, about this issue for the 5th time!! Nice people, convenient hours and location. However, the docs misdiagnosed my daughter more than once causing us to return three times in under a week. When your young child is running a temperature over 100 getting the right the first time matters. In addition, the facilities are very much out of date. The ceiling, floors and walls are in need of paint and replacement. In short, if you are in a jam or need a simple procedure like a flue shot they probably will work, but for real comprehensive or ongoing care you may want to consider another place. read more

We love Kidz Docs! Best part is the nurses line that you can call w questions (no charge) - we have a 6 month old and 3 yr old and wind up calling often and they are always very helpful. Schedulers are so kind and helpful - same day appointments when sick are always accommodated. Doctors are wonderful, Dr Arnold is outstanding. This place is the worst! We have been coming here for the past 4 months and we saw the doctor we interviewed only ones. No one ever tells us when we should come back for the next round of vaccines. We just went for a shot and I ask if someone can check my daughter because she has a rash on her neck and they told me to make an appointment. I think this is absolutely ridiculous! We've taken our kids to KidzDocs for over 12 years. The doctors are good, particularly Drs. Russell and Arnold. When our son was sick as a newborn and in intensive care, Dr. Arnold was there for us all the way. We really appreciated it. The Drs. answer questions and try to get the right diagnosis. Also have had good experience with them providing referrals for specialists when needed. Is it a busy practice? Yes. But I've never had crazy wait times, especially with sick kids. Reading some of the other reviews out there, people expect Drs to be like McDonald's drive throughs. Frankly, I'd rather that the Drs. take their time and get it right. read more

I chose them when I was pregnant and they came to the hospital after I delivered my son, that was in 2004. In the early years they helped me with breastfeeding when he would not latch, they were skilled with calming him to give shots and he has always felt comfortable with the staff and doctors. Now my son will be 12 years old (10/16) and he still goes to Kidz Docs. They have always been very friendly and good at taking care of my son. read more

Found this place after following Dr. Jenie Ferrer from her old practice. The front desk is so friendly and nice. Very professional and kind at all times. The nurses are very friendly, professional and know exactly what they're doing. Dr. Ferrer is amazing as well. After searching for a good pediatrician for my son (who is now 6 mos old) I found Dr. Ferrer. She's kind, confident and a wonderful pediatrician. She's always keeping me up to date with health issues and always looking out for me and my sons best interest. I love her health care approach she uses when taking care of her patients. She not just looks at the patients symptoms, but takes into account they're environment, mental status etc. The last visit we had she called the next day to check on me. She saw that I was a bit overwhelmed as a new mom and she called to make sure I was taking the much needed time for myself( I'm not even her patient). She is amazing and I recommend her for your children! read more

Very poor receptionist skills at this office. I was always greeted with "You owe 10.00". Place just seemed dingy and unfriendly. And after being told that I was not welcome to bring my son to this office if I didn't vaccinate according to their schedule, I was asked non-relevant and private questions like, "Do I own weapons". 18 years of experience with them and all good! I just read the reviews on Kidz Doc and can see a theme pretty clearly... new parents may need to take a breath and realize the world is not perfect. Through our 18 years of going to the Kidz Doc practice, the attendants on the nurses line, assistants and doctors have been there for us, consistently. And, we've been through everything you can imagine with a child: heart murmur to appendicitis to your typical and not so typical virus'. They are so caring and will always take your call, spend the time with you, and schedule a same day appointment when needed. The waiting room is divided as many have said, and agree, there is no good way to set up that structure. Even if your child is sick, the thought of going into the "sick" room is daunting... what if they catch something else runs through your mind?! However, you too will get through it and yes, your child may not have enough patience in the tank before they lose it, but there are other activities you can bring besides food to engage your child, e.g., books, games, your iPhone! They are also quite simply the "neighborhood doctor". Given the amount of times you will take your child to the pediatrician over their first 18 years, you will want someone close to your house. As you make your way through the school system, you realize everyone knows about Kidz Doc! It's really the place to go and if I had to do it all over again, I would certainly choose Kidz Doc. I really like Kidz Doc. Everyone there is always welcoming and really friendly. We are always greeted with a smile and they are really sweet and gentle with my son. They addressed any questions/concerns that my husband and I had (he always had a list of questions to go thru for every visit) and the nurse practitioner, Melissa, was really patient and will answer all of our questions -- we never felt rushed. I love that I was always able to talk to the nurse right away whenever I called with a question and they were always open to seeing my son to ease my worries. read more
