Thanks to Yelp, we were directed to try The Keg and Egg while visiting Wilmington, NC. We were looking for a nice brunch spot before heading back home. Although we were given a list of restaurants by the hotel, The Keg and Egg was not one of the establishments listed. But, the menu and food pics on Yelp looked inviting. Because we arrived relatively close to closing time, there weren't many patrons. As a result, we were able to be seated immediately. We enjoyed the limited menu. Sometimes, too many choices can mean some things are not gonna be prepared/done well. But, in this case, the items that we ordered were just as described on the menu. If you are looking for fine dining, this may not be the spot for you. But if you're looking for good homestyle-adjacent viddles, give this spot a try. Especially if you are looking to try some homemade, not out of the can, corned beef hash. The Keg and Egg has a very local feel. Its ambience isn't for everyone. Outsiders SEEM to be welcome. The place kind of had a biker-ish feel to it. The customer service was decent. But, I would love to try this spot when it's not close to closing time. Happy eating! read more

Nice server, cute little place but the food was disappointing. My friend and I split a BLT and a Ruben. The bacon on the BLT was somehow simultaneously both under and over cooked, bread soggy and anemic with tomatoes. For Sunday Brunch, the 30 minute wait wasn't too bad. You show up and write your name on the paper waiting list. You can get a drink at the bar while you wait. We were in town for about five days, staying in Kure Beach, and had planned that most of our meals would be in Wilmington due to it being off season and some local area restaurants being closed. While we certainly had some great meals in Wilmington Riverwalk area, for breakfast we fell hard for The Keg and Egg. In fact we ended up there three mornings of our vacation! As you enter, the funky movie memorabilia decor is fun, and a conversation starter as we found ourselves seated at the bar with customers that are for sure there everyday or at least every week. We felt very welcomed for being out of towners. The brunch menu has classics, eggs, Texas toast, bacon and hash browns. My first morning I had the Huevos Rancheros served with black beans. It was so good! My husband had the steak and eggs our second visit and it was steakhouse delicious. Cooked perfectly medium rare. The bloody Mary's were also good. I had the classic breakfast my second visit and got the hashbrown casserole as my side. As yummy as it was, I preferred the regular hash browns. I don't know what they do to the Texas toast but it tasted like savory cotton candy. Does Texas toast always taste like that and I just have been missing out? It was yum. The staff are so friendly and clearly care about their local frequent patrons, but as mentioned before, we felt very welcomed. I miss them already. Parking was pretty plentiful but I do believe it competes with parking for the restaurant next door. Restroom was clean. read more

A solid four and a half stars. My husband and I went here for a late breakfast (does that make it brunch?) before a day on the water. At 10 am this place was busy. It has a very lively, local vibe. Lots of bloody Mary's and beers on tables, pretty crowded, lots of people who knew each other. Our waitress was attentive and quick and friendly. The menu was large, with a variety of options. This is a hangover, full up kind of place. You're not going to see an acai bowl or chia seed pudding on this menu. Think chicken and waffles, salmon Benedict, egg sandwich, breakfast burritos. This is hearty food, perfect for a day outside. My husband ordered the biscuits and gravy and a side of grits. I always judge a restaurant by their grits and these were amazing. Creamy, stone ground, great texture. They were so good. I ordered the breakfast burrito with chorizo. I was thrilled that it came out hot, like super hot. It was so refreshing to have food served warm. The chorizo tasted like real, authentic chorizo with a bit of spice. The burrito was so large I could barely eat half of it. It was delicious! The only thing I didn't care for was the skillet it was served in. It kept moving when I went to cut into the burrito and I had to pick paper out from the liner of the skillet. Small price to pay for some amazing food. This will definitely be on our radar for breakfast again! read more

We went here for brunch in a Saturday morning. We walked in around 8:30 am and the bar was packed! Even with that, we were able to get a seat very quickly. (Although we were told to make sure to get there before 10 on weekends!). Service was fast, and friendly. The food... oh my goodness the food! I told my husband he is. It allowed to get the biscuits and gravy anymore because it makes mine look bad (and I'm pretty proud of mine!). The atmosphere is fun, lively and inviting. Its weird, a part of me wanted to give it a four but I really couldnt find a good enough reason to do so. It does suck if you go on a weekend when its busy because they dont take reservations or call ahead and we had to wait a good 45 mins on a Sunday for lunch. They do have a few tables outiside to sit and wait but between the heat and bugs it wasnt too comfortable. It was also weird walking in and not being greeted by a host. You just write your name on a list to be called out when a table opens up. All that aside, food was yummy, good service, and excellent background music. I had the shrimp and grits and they had no problems leaving out the mushrooms and tomato for me. It was very flavorful. One of my daughters had the special strawberry shortcake French toast. It was sooo good! I would get that if I get a chance to come again. I like all the quirky memorabilia hanging around for decor inside. Especially the horror stuff. Nice! I wish it was a little bigger inside but not a deal breaker. They also have 5 dollar mimosas and bloody marys on Sundays. read more

The food is decent but the service is usually great! I went with my friends today for breakfast, which I think is better than their dinner. I got the chicken cheddar biscuit and a side of loaded grits. The chicken was over-salted and the grits without salt or much other flavor--I'm glad I got them loaded! The restaurant has an alternative vintage sort of appeal, and it definitely appears like mostly just a bar at first glance. Although the food was not great today, I stand firm that Keg and Egg is a great place to come with friends for food and drinks! read more

This was my first time visiting Keg + Egg and it was delicious! Everyone loved their food and the portions were very large! We had leftovers of the biscuits + gravy and the shrimp and grits We got: -Shrimp + Grits -Classic Breakfast with bacon, eggs, hash browns + toast! They have Texas toast! Yummmm -Biscuits + Gravy which comes with hash browns and eggs - French Toast; comes with hashbrowns and eggs My only complaint ... and it's only due to covid is that they only we're having outdoor seating or To-go! Visiting from out of town and this place was on my foodie list for brunch. We went on a Saturday morning around 10 expecting a long wait, but only ended up waiting about 20 minutes. I loved the interior of this place. The walls were absolutely covered in nostalgic decorations, movie references, etc. Our server was really friendly despite being very busy with lots of tables. My bf got the banana pudding stuffed waffles which were so cute and delicious. I got the monte cristo which comes between 2 pcs of French toast and has strawberry cream sauce drizzled over the top. I wish it had a little more cheese in it but overall I enjoyed the taste of it. My hash browns were good but they were pretty spicy so I couldn't eat very much of them. Overall we really enjoyed our breakfast here and would come back to try more dishes any time of day! read more

Met one of the Owners, Jamie, a fellow West Virginian at Mad Mole Brewery not long ago and he invited me to his Restaurant, the Keg and Egg. This place is small, but packed with locals. A little off the beaten path from where I live, but still only a little over 5 minutes to get here. A small neighborhood strip mall location surrounded by neighborhoods. Really cool atmosphere. Sad that I didn't find this place earlier in my first year in Wilmington. I really wanted to try a sampling of many items on the menu, but whenever I see Shrimp and Grits on the menu I have to go there. The Shrimp and Grits did not disappoint, so I will be back to try different items on the menu. Really enjoyed my visit here. I will be back. read more

We went back to The Keg and Egg. Of course we were happy with our experience, I was excited to try the shrimp and grits this time. They were so flavorful, with mushrooms, tomatoes and green onions. These are some of the best! My boyfriend went with what he enjoyed the last time, the Brunch fry pie, both of these left us with some delicious leftovers. It was busy shortly after we arrived and had to ask for refills on our drinks. The servers were very friendly and making conversation with the regulars. This is an cool place to visit regularly and I will probably be doing so. read more

ROOKIE POST First time visitor to The Keg and Egg for Saturday brunch and I was very impressed with the quality of their food and delightful service. Featured is the Keg and Egg Shrimp and Grits, biscuit and gravy along with the Kegs Benedict. Ok...I'm gonna admit that I was skeptical of the shrimp and grits at first glance but after taking a few bites, it probably ranks in my top 10 in Wilmington. No kidding. My Mrs. even stated that I made a great choice for brunch and that was evidential since there was absolutely nothing left on her plate. We will definitely be going back in the near future to try out more of what this hidden, hole-in-the-wall has to offer. This was a pleasant surprise of a restaurant! I'm a sucker for odd aesthetic and the Keg and Egg is certainly that! We had a delightful waitress and a great dining experience. The staff was very helpful and attentive! I think this would be a good spot to have a couple beers and enjoy a small group of friends, but I wasn't so wild about the food. 01/04/20 We went to The Keg and Egg a couple of times for a late breakfast after our grandsons I9Sports Basketball games at Costal Christian Highschool. It is a small cozy restaurant that reminds me of a beach bar, that isn't at the beach. If your party has more than six, you may have trouble finding a table. The fact that it is small means it is quiet, and that the service is great. They have three menus, their Regular menu which they serve all week. This menu has nine items which cover the basics, two of which are unique: the Kegzilla and the Brunch Fry Pie. Then there is the Brunch and Weekly Brunch Special menus which are served on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. It is definitely worthwhile to visit this restaurant on the weekend. We went on Saturday, but the first time we went, we had a coupon, so we were restricted to the Regular menu. That is something I could never under understand. I get why you can't use a coupon for a discounted item, but it doesn't make sense to me why you can't use it for a full price item, just because it is on a "special" menu. To start off with, they do make a very good Bloody Mary for $5.00. I think it is one of the better one around. My wife had their French Toast that comes with two eggs and hashbrowns. She added a side of crisp bacon. Everything was cooked just right, including the bacon. I had their Breakfast Burrito made with peppers, onions, eggs, sausage, hashbrowns and cheddar cheese. I also added a side order of floppy bacon and it was cooked as requested. 01/18/20 On our second visit, we were able to order of the "special" menus which gave us a much better selection. We both ordered from the Brunch Menu. My wife ordered the Monte Cristo Sandwich: Thinly sliced Boar's Head ham, turkey and swiss cheese melted between two slices of French Toast topped with strawberry cream sauce. It came with a side of hashbrowns and she added a side of bacon. As expected, everything was cooked perfectly. I ordered the Huevos Rancheros: A crispy tortilla piled high with chorizo, two eggs, salsa and cotija cheese. Served with refried black beans, avocado, lettuce, tomato and sour cream. Portions were of good size; you won't leave hungry and delicious to beat. I think this is worth a twenty- or thirty-minute drive on the weekend for a different breakfast.
