We were told we could have three electric candle for the three birthdays we were celebrating -- so, naturally, we took them. However, I thought I needed a tall water glass and took that with me for my $780~ tab. I get it, not cool. They called us and we returned the items that were promised and taken without permission. However, the poindexter glasses wearing, socially frumpy, sad about life man that decided to berate me upon the return of their items incited a desire to throw rocks through their windows. I find it hard to explore an appropriate lexicon to describe an employee that would act like such a piece of dung. Also, don't get the butter noodles -- I think they microwave noodles so you can have a non-croutons croutonious crispy noodle. Loving chipping my teeth. Anyway, that dude is a dick. The Keep is the ideal place for a special occasion. We saw families celebrating milestone birthdays and couples celebrating anniversaries during our visit. We got a table right at the windows, which gave us a beautiful view of Missoula as The Keep is up on a hill. Besides the couple of cocktails we ordered, we shared the bruschetta. It was a little cumbersome to eat with how thick the bread was, but the flavors were incredible and just a tad too salty. Actually, come to think of it, almost everything we ate here was a bit too salty. I also ordered the harvest salad. The pickled apples were not my favorite. However, the candied pecans and goat cheese went well with the vinaigrette on the salad. For my entrée, I ordered the 8 oz. filet medium, but it came more medium rare. It was delicious. What could spell Friday night in summer in Missoula than enjoying a glass of wine on the deck at The Keep? We were looking forward to a well prepared meal, a good wine and the great atmosphere. It was pretty quiet at The Keep tonight. Lots of tables to choose from. Unfortunately. We were 'invisible' tonight. We were seated. We were given menus They poured us water. Someone did come by to refill our waters. He asked if we enjoying our evening. I told him we were waiting on our server. He nodded. And then... we were invisible. In total, we sat at our table for 1/2 hr without anyone asking if we'd like a drink, describing their special, asking if we had questions or taking our order. We sat as people around us were served their entrees. And we waited. A group of 4 came in and were seated - grandparents, granddaughter and her dad. They were quickly waited on drinks delivered, orders taken while we counted the minutes going by with our waters. When that happed we decided we should go somewhere else and we left. No one said thanks for coming in. No one noticed we were leaving. I mentioned to a girl holding the door to the deck open for us that we never got served and she just giggled. But our evening wasn't a waste of time. We went downtown to The Depot and were seated immediately. Got our drink order directly and ordered within a few minutes. If you visit The Keep you may want to bring a flair gun with you. read more

I never seem to learn about going to establishments that bill themselves as "fine dining." My fault there. Now, having said that, I have virtually nothing good to say about The Keep. Let me count the ways: 1. Extremely limited menu that forces you to pick the lesser of evils, which in this case was risotto, one of my most favorite dishes. (It needs to be said here--vociferously--that this is pretty much rice with some garnish. The best risotto is with mushrooms.) Having had risotto around the world, I cannot remember any of them being as bad as this one. IT WAS TERRIBLE. And, at $24, it was obscene. Plus, no salad, no bread or breadsticks, just an ice cream scoop of RICE, with some meaningless, unidentified, tasteless berries, etc. thrown on top to meet the criteria of "fine dining." So sad. 2. Wait time. We waited well over an hour for the entrees. Acceptable? 3. SELF TIPPING. Yes, I understand that parties of more than four are tipped at a restaurant standard rate. However, this policy merely highlights the fact that you are not paying an adequate wage to your staff, with the obscene notion that the customer will just pick up the deficit. Bad PR, guys. 4. Adding on a tip that was not acknowledged on the paper bill I signed--I NEVER AGREED TO THIS. In summary, this will be the absolute last time I eat at The Keep, and I will let friends & acquaintances know exactly what to expect at your establishment. I don't wish you well.... read more

The food was excellent! The duck breast was spectacular and there was an excellent fish dish as well. Bread service comes for $7 but if you're going all out you should get that too. Caesar salads could use a teensy bit of help but they were cleansing at least. One downside? The lighting was dim. Hard to read the menu even though I'm a young lad. read more

Well to start off, the grounds get a star on its own. Sitting atop Missoula, the views of the city are amazing. The staff was very attentive to the needs of the customers. We ordered the Thai Clams at $20 and they were well worth it. Substantial portion soaked in a delicious broth that paired well with the bread provided. Unfortunately I can't say the same for the main course. We ordered two NY steaks priced at $50 each. The potatoes came out cold and the meat was sub-par in our opinion. Very high fat content and no flavor. No Salt, Pepper, or seasoning of any kind. The same goes for the Butter Compound. No flavor whatsoever. The steak was tough to the point where it basically was to tear the meat rather than cut. Pretty disappointed in the dish. Lastly, we went to order our desert. We were hoping to have a Montana favorite Huckleberry Cheesecake. Our server notified us that they were discontinuing the option. Quit serving a Huckleberry Desert in Montana is like Hershey PA removing Chocolate off the menu. Montana is so known for its Huckleberry, it was sad to see them take that direction. I think that's a real mistake moving foreword. We chose the Triple Chocolate Mousse at $14 and it was done well. A good option for Chocolate Lovers and presented well with Raspberry syrup and Berries. Overall THE KEEP hits on a few items. The setting is wonderful and we had dinner at 7:30pm so we were able to enjoy a great Sunset. The Main Course though failed to live up to a $50 price point. Not having a Montana Themed desert only added to the disappointment. If you have people from out of town, THE KEEP offers stunning views to share. Unfortunately, Steak being such a big player in the Montana Cuisine, I would rethink how they decide to prepare such an expensive dish. Should we decide to go again, we will stick to the appetizers and cocktails. Hopefully they will rethink the Huckleberry decision and keep it on the menu. Keeping Montana's signature desert flavor instead of a carrot cake that will be replacing it will be a short lived idea. read more

Great location and awesome service. Got there a bit before our reservation and enjoyed a cocktail at their bar. We're promptly acknowledged by the bartender and presented with drink menus - I opted for their Golden Hour cocktail - delicious flavors and perfect for the autumn season. It was a Saturday night and the place was pretty busy but service was fairly prompt once we were seated at our table. Seemed they were a bit short handed in our section but our server, Patrick, was hustling and delivering plates at reasonable pace. We started with the tuna appetizer and moved on to the filet - everything was delicious. Opted for the chocolate tiramisu to go - absolutely delicious, just wish we got the chocolate decor that was included in the dining room plates. I was sold on the lamb when it said "original mansion recipe" and it did not disappoint. I never in my life had lamb that tasted like a steak lol. It was just so different and well made. We had a very fun and relaxing dinner here. The setting was the main attraction. The drive to get there was scenic and we saw a lot of deer on the way. The view from the restaurant was great, especially from the second floor where we sat. It looks like a house/lodge that was converted into a restaurant. It's unfortunate that Missoula does not have more choices for fine dining. It's also unfortunate that The Keep does not, in our opinion, reach the bar of a fine dining establishment. It could be, it certainly has the location and the food is good. Most of the dishes we ordered were well prepared. The calamari appetizer was very good, nicely fried with good sauces. The Three Sister's Salad was a disappointment as there was not much flavor. The Salmon dish was moist with a buttery flavor and the Ribeye was fine, but not worth the $52 price. The big letdowns were the service and the atmosphere. The restaurant, at least the front section by the windows, was very loud. It was difficult to carry on a conversation and the waitress kept having to repeat things to customers. It was also cold. We, and others, were wearing our coats/jackets at the table. Our visit, first and possible last, was for a special occasion. We were celebrating two birthdays, one of them a milestone birthday. This information was shared with the restaurant on the reservation form. I think out waitress was not in a good mood. She was pretty lifeless and it did not set a nice tone for the meal. She checked on us once during the meal. The only mention of a celebration was when she brought the check and said "Happy birthday" to the table. Really? This was after she did not notice/comment that we did not finish our dishes or order dessert. A nice approach would have been to mention the celebration at the beginning of the meal. Maybe even offer a free dessert or glass of wine? We went to another restaurant and had a nice dessert. Come on folks, up your game. We need better restaurants here!! read more

We can't stop raving about our wonderful experience at The Keep in Nov. Our family (almost 30 of us) celebrated the 100th birthday of my amazing father in law there. We rented the main floor dining area, and we were treated like royalty. The staff went out of their way to make sure we had the best service, drinks and menu possible. It was perfect in every way. Several family members had never been there before, and they were so pleased with the food and service that they have returned to dine there since. read more

What an incredible experience... we were driving from Bozeman and called to make a reservation... it was my birthday! The host suggested a table in the lounge and said to ask for her when we arrived and that she would take good care of us. When we arrived she sat us at her favorite table with an incredibly beautiful view of the city of Missoula and right next to the fireplace. Absolutely gorgeous as city lights are my favorite! Then our server Aaron was very knowledgeable of the menu and his suggestion were on point . The food was amazing and the mocktails were just perfect! They didn't rush our experience even though we arrived 30 mins before the kitchen closed.... it was the most beautiful and delightful birthday dinner! He even went to the kitchen and plated my choice of dessert... as we were leaving the staff wished me happy birthday and the host i believe was Lori or laura ... i hate that i can't remember... she hugged us on our way out and wished me happy birthday again!! i felt so special and this experience i will never forget! I went to The Keep for a celebratory dinner on my trip to Montana last summer and I was so impressed by the waitstaff and their excellent service. It's in a beautiful historic building at the country club with a fantastic view of the mountains. I had the grilled salmon which was perfection. If you're in Missoula I highly recommend this spot. An added bonus, it's supposed to be haunted but I didn't see any ghosts on my visit! ;) read more

Felt a bit unwelcoming initially when we first came in. We sat at the bar and the bartender made us some decent drinks off their cocktail menu. Our server, wish I could remember her name, was friendly and efficient. The food was good. No complaints about the dinner though I don't believe the value was there. I did not like the way the host asked us 3 separate times about our reservation and continued to ask every new arrival of guests in the same gatekeeping tone. The Keep really let us down on V-Day. We live close enough to walk (a ways uphill) to the keep and have done so as a fancy date night tradition for the 15 years we've lived in the neighborhood. Last night we were so excited and so unbelievably let down. Insulted honestly. Our server Joel was wonderful, and was obviously put in a tough spot, by the raw entrees the kitchen sent out. We ordered filet and lamb. Medium and m-rare. They arrived Rare & Tartar. Ever had raw lamb-surprise on your second bite of a $200 dinner? We didn't send it back because having to cook it ourselves seemed like a better option than getting it back with essence of scrote, and Rosemary taint butter. It's a tough spot to be in, we hate Karen's too, we know how sending food back will be perceived. A skilled veterinarian could have saved the animals we were served. I'm all set on body fluids from a staff that was obviously buckling a bit on their busiest night of the year. We simply asked for to-go boxes two minutes after being served. I did snap a couple photos of the over-priced grocery ingredients. Check out the bite of lamb RAW. And my wife isn't a well done with ketchup sort of person she just like a medium steak. Again, check the example. That's a rare steak. I had hoped the bill would reflect that we'd need to cook the food we'd ordered. $20 off a $180 tab? Would that suffice if you were in our shoes? It was pretty insulting honestly. That's why this review is happening publicly. NOTE THAT 20% TIP WAS ALREADY ADDED. We wouldn't stiff a server who had nothing to do with the hack job. The protein was pretty great once we left the ambience of the restaurant we'd reserved a couple months ago, walked home, waited for the grill to warm up, eaten our potatoes and veggie because it was 2 hours past dinner time. So basically once we did the job we paid a premium price for ourselves, around ten pm we had some nice pieces of lamb and beef. It really stinks to write this. I'm sure the keep can take the hit of losing a couple that can only afford to eat here 3-4 times a year. It's just a shame to lose a spot that feels like a tradition and a place we count on to be reliable and elegant when we have guests, etc. As stated earlier, our server Joel was awesome, and tried his best. Maybe if we'd made a scene in the restaurant, management would have handled this properly. The dignified low key approach obviously isn't effective at all. Thanks for the magical evening. My family has been here a few times and wanted to take me for a special dinner while I was visiting from Las Vegas because they love it so much. The reason for 3 stars is mainly for our server. Food was incredible, support staff and ambiance. We had Erica H as our server and unfortunately, that was the worst service we have had in a long time, and it was a slower evening. There was no formal greeting, didn't go over specials, barely checked on us, and we had to stop her to ask for things such as boxes, to order dessert or for our check when she was walking by us several times without even glancing at our table. When she brought the paid check back there was not even a "thank you" from her. We are all huge on service and hospitality and this was a huge disappointment. We noticed she was giving the table behind ours full attention, and acted like we barely existed. She opened the wine we brought then after the first pour never poured it again. These are things I pay attention to as I am a manager at a restaurant in The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas. Again, this review is mainly for service by our initial server. The food and support staff were great! Their other 2 servers they had the other times were amazing and they pointed them out nearby at other tables and I could see the difference. This was such a little jewel of a restaurant. We used scout maps and wondered if it was taking us to some weird place as we traveled Up above the city and through mostly residential neighborhoods. If you want an excellent meal with great service I definitely wouldn't miss this opportunity. The dessert was delicious as well. I'm glad we found this place! The food was delicious. Everything was plated beautifully. The menu is simple but the flavors are thoughtful. The service was great. Attentive but not there too often. The ambiance kind of feels like you're in a castle on the dining side and a bar on the other side. You can make reservations for the dining side. The only downside was that there was a group near us that had a child watching cocomelon and then later the people paying went over the price of every item and their total multiple times. Its a little expensive but no one paying that price wants to be able to hear your child watching cocomelon on your phone from 10 feet away and then hear you basically complain about the amount you chose to spend. I don't know how that could have been fixed but it dampened the mood and I wouldn't be surprised if it happened often. I just thought with the higher prices that people would be a little classier. read more

Very disappointed in wait times. Was embarassed our out of town guest had to ask the wait staff about our delayed entrees which were then served by 2 other servers with our server no where in sight. We concluded with the chocolate moose, assuming no baking would be prompt, but that also took long to arrive. Our appetizers did arrive quickly, even before our cocktails from the not so busy bar a few feet away. Party of 4, Friday 7pm, resturant was not full or appear busy. I have always enjoyed the keep. I haven't been there in a year but my sister and I decided to end her visit there. Martini and shrimp cocktail were fabulous. I haven't had great success with shrimp cocktails in this town but they've got it down!!! Bavette steaks and Cab franc top notch! I might as well have been eating prime it was so tender. Crème brûlée and coffee perfection. And the service was above and beyond. The only complaint is that the chairs on true deck are truly tragic. I had to ask for a restaurant chair knowing I would be there 2 hours, but after spending $300 I think they will agree it was a hood investment. Change those awful chairs please!!! read more
