We were in town for a few days and decided to try a new restaurant. Went to The Stables where the theme is apparently "feed people like they just finished plowing a field." My salad was amazing, drinks were great, and my steak arrived looking less like a meal and more like a personal challenge from the state of Montana. Food was great, which is rude because now I can't even be mad -- just uncomfortably full and questioning my life choices. Would I go back? Yes. Would I learn to order less? Absolutely not. read more

I really want to give 5 stars BUT..I'll start with what is great about The Stables: we made reservations and a real person called to confirm! That was a first! We were seated at a window table which was lovely, the music was perfect and the restaurant was not loud even though it filled up as we were sitting there! Our server was wonderful! Classy, knowledgeable and personable. We had the smoked salmon hush puppies to start- loved the smokiness & flavor! For dinner, we were going to order the ciopinno but it wasn't available so we ordered the rack of lamb and of course, the NY steak! The rack of lamb had a good flavor, but instead of medium rare, it was well done. Sadly. The NY Steak was also well done- instead of med-rare. They did give a reduction in price when I mentioned it, which I didn't expect! Everything else was so great- we will definitely go back to give another chance! read more

Our server, Alex from Serbia, apparently there are two Alex's, was great. Very attentive and knowledgeable. The Bleu Cheesecake appetizer had nice blend of flavors, however the Crostini was a bit overcooked. Hard and dry. Gem Caesar salad was very different with nice flavor combinations. Beef bourguignon was delicious. Salmon dish also very good. We couldn't agree which was better which is always a good thing for a meal. Alex recommended the Pavlova and I'm glad he did. The Stables shares kitchen (and restrooms) with the Cranky Sam gastropub next door. The owners expanded into the adjoining building (227 W Main Street) to open The Stables in May 2024 as an intimate, upscale wine bar and fine-dining. The decor and service were great but the food did not quite live up to expectations. In particular, the zucchini fritter with my lamb was over-crispy and the lamb was cooked in a strange way - raw center and overdone exterior. It looked like it was previously roasted then zapped in the microwave. Otherwise - excellent - my pate was delicious. read more

Unexpectedly excellent food. Very unique preparations. The. Mushroom leek appetizer dish and steelhead ceviche were excellent. I had the rack of lamb entrée, which was also cooked perfectly to my request and was an unbelievably good preparation. We ate across the bar, and the wine selection is extremely complete. Barry, the bartender, was extremely friendly and very helpful. No question, if you're in Missoula, this is the place to eat. read more

The seating system in this business is ridiculous. We walked in around 5:30... the bar had 4 people seated (including a child?) with about 8 seats empty. The host informs us that all the bar seats are reserved and all of the tables are taken as well. (again the tables are maybe half taken but I understand they were reserved, we wanted bar) Host then tells us he is waiting for a call back to confirm the bar seats are all taken so if we want to hang out outside in the 90° heat for 5-10 minutes he will let us know. After a while he calls my wife's name, we come back inside... and then he takes a call and says ohhhhh they just confirmed... so all bar seats are taken, but if you want to wait for a few more.... Uh NO, forget it. BAR SHOULD BE OPEN SEATING! First come, first serve, like everywhere else in the world! It was my wife's Birthday, we were ready to celebrate and spend $$$. Your loss because of your dumb seating policy. We went back to Plonk which was excellent. Never should have left. Change your bar to open seating, and no kids! read more

They have traditional dishes that they spin the flavors. We had a Cesar that had a Asian flare (delish) then a strawberry and beet salad which didn't have enough strawberries and the beets were pickled (it was ok) Mains we had the New York with the horseradish sauce (Steak was ok but the sauce great) Rib Eye would have been a better choice. Then we ordered the cioppino which had an India inspired twist, I would recommend not putting g so much garnish alittle goes along way with such strong flavors. (It was good) Dessert we ordered the Coconut Meringue (excellent) Drinks - Vodka Martini's (Highly recommend filling up the small glasses they serve them in, they were always short poured) Overall we had a nice time. Heading home after a beautiful weekend in Missoula, Kalispell and Whitefish, Montana. How majestic are the mountains and terrain. We were looking for fine dining in Missoula and Stables was our choice. The environment was upscale but not pretentious. The lines here are clean, sleek and classy. Patrons lined up as Stables opened at 5. The menu is varied yet not all over the place. There are three categories: starters, salads and entrees. We ordered the braised leeches and mushrooms, confit garlic, fine herbs, and a baguette. The food was delicious, had good flavor and was tasty. We ordered the steamer clams with garlic, white wine, andouille and a baguette. The clams were good but the garlic was overwhelming. Our entree was the lamb rack cooked to order with zucchini fritter, mint, feta, shirazri salad and lamb au jus. The fritter was good and the lamb was done well. Stables is a solid option for a good dining spot. The decor and setting was very nice. For a special occasion, this is a good option. Make sure you have a reservation. read more

Very delicious dinner and excellent service. Has instantly become my favorite restaurant in Missoula. Had the Manila clams, burrata and beet salad, and pasta of the day. Everything was very tasty and well presented. Solid portions as well. Restaurant has an upscale vibe, which is good for a night out. Looking forward to coming back. read more

Nice little downtown spot. Quaint atmosphere. Food experience was mixed so would like to try some other items on the menu. Hamachi crudo was very tasty albeit small. Presentation could have used some creativity. Wanted to try the watermelon salad which looked awesome but didn't feel I would have room to also have an entree. Tried the brick chicken which was a little disappointing because the chicken was dry. Nice presentation though. The best part of the dish was the shaved asparagus salad! Light and delicious. Finished off with some crème brûlée which did not disappoint. Was served with fresh strawberries in a cinnamon sauce which was really good. Sat at the bar. Service was prompt. Truly the best steak I have had in Missoula in years and definitely the best in town! Mushroom pasta made a great table share since we all elected to get the New York. Could not seats us until 45 minutes after our reservation and blamed it on traffic. Not sure if they meant cars or people. Did not see many cars and parked out front. Out of the food we wanted. Bison boulanes over salted. Very appologetic but not accommodating. Not a great experience, felt like a restaurant working out the kinks but they've been open 2 years. Had a great time here with girlfriends. Atmosphere is super cute, with a little bit of rustic and a little bit of chic. Randomly enough some of the best house water I've had (they have a special filter). Drinks are great from the bar, and our salads and entrees were all well dressed, balanced and cooked. Big portions too - we were too stuffed to even think about dessert. Would definitely recommend for anyone in Missoula! read more

At first glance the menu looked small but every dish was excellent. No wasted items on the menu. There are only a handful of nice restaurants in missoula and this one is definitely on our list now of where to go and where to bring friends. The only thing I'd switch which is just me personally, would be a ribeye vs New York. But in fairness, no one ordered it. I am just a ribeye guy. Unfortunately, this restaurant has an incredibly high price point with bland foods, overcooked dishes, and small portions. The ambience was nice but the lack of creativity to dishes, unseasonal sides, and an overcooked chicken was appallingly disappointing. The nightly pasta special lacked flavor and the shrimp was still veined. It was also cold. It is one thing to eat a flavorful overcooked chicken another to eat bland, tacky chicken. The service was alright... Overall, we felt it was a wasted date and a wasted $100. read more

I had dinner at The Stables recently, the service was excellent, appetizer was delicious, I had the blue cheese cheesecake. I had the hen (cornish) roulade entree, the hen arrived hot however the vegetables, rice and sauce underneath were cold. The waiter apologized several times for the dish. The kitchen reheated the dish which unfortunately dried out the roulade. The dish had too much sauce it overtook the rice and vegetables. I wish it had been served on a standard plate, the dish was in a round small, lipped plate, made it difficult to cut and eat. I tried to post on Open Table however I wasn't able to. ​Once again the waiter apologized several times and gave me a comped dessert. read more

Went there for our anniversary. Food was excellent. I had the lamb and it was cooked perfectly. My wife had the beef bourguinon and really enjoyed it. The leeks and mushroom appetizer really hit the spot. Cocktails were unique and really were good. Our waiter was attentive with just a little humor. Went here to celebrate our engagement and they took great care of us with champagne and dessert. The service was great and space felt very cozy which we really enjoyed. They have a wonderful and extensive wine list as well as a great bourbon selection. The food was fresh and delicious and at a fair price relative to the quality. We went with the braised mushroom and leeks for our appetizer which were a great way to start off the meal and we would definitely recommend. As for entrees, my fiancé had the gnocchi which had some great red pepper flavor with just enough spice to tase where I had the beef with saffron risotto which was very rich but one of the better risottos I've had in a long time. The food the two times we have been has been outstanding and worth a return, service is friendly and efficient, and it's a cute little place with nice ambiance. Cocktails are a bit over priced compared to other great options downtown, but really they need address the issue that half the seating is really close to front door and in the winter every time that door opens you get hit with cold air.
