I love this place! Wow! I came on the recommendation of my hotel while in the area for work. It was suggested that I get reservations, but since I was only one person, I found a spot at the bar. The servers were super attentive and friendly. They were also really knowledgeable about the wines as well as the food. It's a steakhouse, but I was craving fish, so I got the salmon at the advice of the bartender. He was not wrong, it was incredible. They got the crisp of the skin just right. I discovered gamay noir wine for the first time! I can't believe I've never had this. It's absolutely delightful! It is complex while also being light and refreshing. The inside of the restaurant is nice and perfectly lit. It is great for a date or to come out with friends. They really show that sweet montana hospitality. This was a tough decision. We had one night left to have a nice meal in Montana before ending our trip. Every place we looked at including 1889 had multiple negative reviews but I chose 1889 for no particular reason. When all was said and done, we definitely made the right choice. Our steaks were cooked perfectly, drinks were fantastic and service was great as well. With the Bison Steak, I suggest not going rare. Heat it up a notch and it's just about as tender as the filet. read more

Might be the worst Manhattan I've ever had. It tasted bitter.Waaaaay too much vermouth. Super disappointed with my dinner. Ordered the filet mignon medium rare, it came out medium. The fries were good. The bone marrow was amazing. I'm always willing to give a place a second chance but there are a lot more restaurants to try before I do that. The food was alright, but not much of it was really in the stellar, memorable range. For the price point, I was hoping for a more creative, harmonious meal. The gnocchi was ok, and the crunchy garlic was good. There were exactly 7 gnocchi, so not a ton of food either. The food is a bit bland, and extras like sauce, cheese, or caramelized onions are an additional charge. The salmon was just ok, not very seasoned. The beet chips on top were good. The Brussel sprouts were the highlight of the meal- orange marmalade and goat cheese was great, would definitely recommend that. First off, our server was excellent. I think her name is Harley maybe. My ribeye was cooked as I wanted it and tender but the flavor was just average. This was a good meal at average pricing but 1889 does not have average pricing so I expected a bit more. My mom's sirloin was the best sirloin I've ever had. She didn't eat much of it so being the steak guy I am, I had to finish it for her. I would say this is a good place to eat but could be better for the prices you have to pay. read more

The dining room is nicely appointed however with so many hard surfaces it is extremely difficult to hear even with your own table. I ordered a rib steak, it was cooked as ordered however it was untrimmed and quite thin. The steak was plated atop mashed potatoes which seemed odd. Two of my companions ordered filets which looked good. The price point is quite high and alacart so sides or salad were extra. A small Caesar was $8. Service was okay but I believe she was trying to take care of too many tables and so no chit chat nor smiles. read more

We were in Missoula recently for a wedding and needed to find a place in the area for dinner on the night we arrived. 1889 is what we settled on - I'm very glad that we did. The menu had a variety of statehouse staples (think beef and seafood) and emphasized local cuts of meat. We started with the oysters, shrimp, bread service, and bone marrow. (We were hungry!) The bone marrow was the standout item - it was brûlée'd with a sugary topping that gave it a very unique aspect. I've never quite had anything like it. The steaks and sides were excellent, and my wife was quite partial to her truffle fries. The berry crumble for desert was the perfect end to the evening. The beverage menu emphasized standard cocktails (think manhattans and the like) which I thought was odd. That said, each cocktail we ordered was done uncommonly well. Including a quite authentic 1944 style Mai Tai which was a pleasant surprise in both a steakhouse and Montana. We also enjoyed a brandy flight over desert which was excellent. Service was prompt and friendly, and our waitress was full of recommendations. The ambience of the restaurant was dark and atmospheric. I loved that it was quiet enough to enjoy a conversation. Not sure when the next time we'll be in these parts will be, but 1889 will be on our list for when we are. read more

Ordered the ribeye steak, told them to cook it medium rare, came out BLUE RARE. Not even f***ing joking.

The atmosphere is great, started out terrific. Our steaks came out looked great. I cut into mine and very under cooked for medium rare, more like blue. I asked our waitress Nara to cook it little more. Nara then kind of snapped back, oh you want it medium well. I said not medium rare and this is blue. Then my son found a black curly hair on his steak. We all know what kind of hair that is. How did it get in the plate and what is going on in that kitchen? It is beyond disgusting and a first in all my years of dining at high e d steak houses. The manager came over and said he was taking my son's entree off the bill. He didn't apologize for the hair or Nara's rude tones. They should have comp the whole meal. I don't leave a lot of reviews but people need to know our experience before spending's hundreds of dollars for dinner at 1889. My wife came out here in September 2025 and they messed up her gluten dairy free requests which can cause serious health issues. Not taking a chance for strike three. read more

This was my first trip to Missoula, Montana, and after a day of outdoor adventures a steakhouse seemed a very appropriate choice for dinner! I love that the name is 1889 and that's when Montana became a state! As a restaurant designer I notice everything, and I absolutely thought the steer head on the rough wood wall at the entrance was stunning! Another thing I always notice is the noise level... granted it was not super full when we dined but it was easy to hear across the table and carry on a conversation... thank goodness! I also love that this restaurants food is locally and regionally sourced!! Tonight our server was Scott, who I thought was fantastic! He had a super cool, chill vibe and a look that fit the restaurant perfectly... he was also very knowledgeable about the menu and guided us correctly! We did not have cocktails tonight but did have 2 bottles of a really great red wine... (they do have an extensive collection to choose from.) Three of the four of us had the famous steaks, which were fantastic. I had the Pan Seared alaskan Halibut which was also very tasty along with the Hamachi Crudo. Not only was the Hamachi delicious but it was a beautiful presentation! My husband had 3 Oysters as an appetizer and a Caesar salad to start. We finished off with Boozy Affogato (they have a few to choose from) that was delightful! I might just have to copy that at home!! While the burger was plated well (neat and clean), the burger itself was dry and a tad bit over cooked. The bun was a bit much bread for me. The fries were seasoned Well but were Not crisp. Family owned steakhouse at the heart of downtown Missoula. Loved everything I tried. The smoked trout dip was heavenly. Paired will with pita. The bone marrow brûlée was out of bounds. 3 huge marrow and just the right amount of caramelization with the grilled crostini was the perfect pair. I had to save one marrow to garnish my steak as nature's butter. Lastly the 12 oz NY strip was perfectly cooked and well seasoned. Plus the Caesar salad with anchovies was to die for. The staff were decent enough and the ambience and bar setup were good enough to give that third star but being a foodie with lots of experience, I gave it three tries and gave up. The pork chop was OK, but nothing to rave about (if want a state of the art porkchop, go to Texas Roadhouse at HALF the price), and was fatty and less than appealing, especially at $38. AND, what's up with no complimentary bread? It used to be that a homemade bread was one of the major treats of the meal at a restaurant like this. Apparently no more. Instead a board with scraps from a local bakery and some weird cheeses was available for $12--what a ripoff. Lastly, the service was subpar AND at one point, the waitress just forgot about us (I actually had to go find her to to get the drink I'd ordered. THEN, she brought it and pretty much ignored me for the rest of the dinner, because I'd pissed her off.) Lousy service and it was tipped appropriately. Will never go back and cannot recommend. Amazing dinner! Service was great, the entire staff was very attentive and kind. We started off with the bone marrow, which fell off the bone and was lathered onto the bread; mouth watering and worth licking the plate! I'm a ribeye gal and the kitchen knew how to serve a proper steak! Cooked at the right the temperature and very well seasoned. The right char from the grill topped off the steak! Our side Brie and honey pasta was beyond our anticipation! The Brie melted and paired so well with the pasta, the touch of honey and pine nuts made it a perfect side to our steaks. Must haves include the "crème brûlée" bone marrow, beef tartare, and bison when available (how often do you get to order bison?). Great options for drinks whether it be cocktails, local whiskey and beers, or South African reds; there is always something unique on the menu to try. Not your run of the mill, steakhouse wine program. Atmosphere isn't stuffy at all, and Brent makes you feel like you're just hanging out for dinner and drinks with a friend.
