My specialty is adventure outings, where I take a small pack of well-behaved dogs out to a nature beach to run around and play. I pick them up from their home, supervise them having a great time, and towel dry them before bringing them back home. If your dog isn’t trained off-leash and you’d like for them to be, I can help! I use positive reinforcement and consistency to make progress. The first step is to build trust and a bond, and to show that coming out with me will bring great fun and rewards. When the time is right, I can slowly start to allow them to have more freedom, while training vital recall skills. If you feel your dog isn’t a candidate to go off-leash, I can also do leashed hikes, neighborhood walks, drop-ins and pet transportation to vet and grooming appointments. I have experience with newborn puppies all the way to geriatric and special-needs. Check out my website for more information, and feel free to text or email with questions or to set up a time to talk.

A few months ago, we hired OffLeash K9 through their "Board and Train" program, for our Cane Corso…read morepuppy. At that time, he was around 7 months old. At the time I signed the training services agreement, there was zero mention of the use of an electronic training collar as part of the program. Additionally, it is not clearly described or disclosed on the OffLeash K9 website that they utilize these collars as a part of the training-- they use vague language to refer to their practices, including the use of "safe and effective methods", but no concrete examples or definitions. I did not discover that they were planning to use an electronic (shock) collar until well after I paid the $2790 for the training program, I should add. Learning this information gave me pause, and I considered cancelling the training, as I had learned through my own professional experience that positive reinforcement training is more effective to achieve results for dogs than punishment-based training. Nonetheless, I was told and encouraged by the trainer (Izzy) that this method was safe, and would not cause injury. Upon return to me after the 2 weeks, my puppy had injuries around his neck which the trainer referred to as "hot spots". The trainer informed me that it was simply due to "irritation" from the collar. The trainer stated at the time of return that our dog was "stubborn", and "slow to learn". Being a Registered Veterinary Technician, I took him home, and I shaved and cleaned the wounds around his neck, in order to better visualize the area. It was immediately clear that he had painful, necrotic pressure wounds around his neck (see photos). I administered first aid, and consulted a veterinarian colleague for further instruction. I am relieved to report that his injuries healed without the need for more invasive treatment--however, those pressure wounds are not a "normal" result of the use of electronic collars. That occurs when the collar is left in place for too long, and is fitted too tightly. This was a direct result of the misuse of the training collar by the trainer. Subsequently, our dog was fearful of the collar, and, understandably, would refuse to allow us to place it on him. He demonstrated very little obedience as a result of his training, despite our attempts to follow up with his training as directed, and he appeared more anxious than he was prior to the program. Both personally and professionally, I was left disappointed and concerned by this program, and certainly would not recommend it to any of my friends or associates. I question its validity, if management is using and supporting dubious communications, and condoning harmful practices. I have extensive connections in the veterinary medical community of the Central Coast and Bay Area, after an almost 20-year career as a senior veterinary nurse, and I have been vehemently opposing and advocating against this he use of OffLeash K9. I have dissuaded clients from acquiring their services. Furthermore, I strongly suggest that trainer Izzy of Salinas be investigated for misconduct, and potentially animal neglect. My intention in sharing this feedback is to make the community of pet owners, whom I love and humbly serve, aware of the adverse effects of this training program.

Kaya started with some anxiety around other dogs and had a tendency to pull on the leash, but the transformation since joining Pacific Paw has been incredible. Thanks to their skilled and patient staff, Kaya's walking behavior has improved dramatically. She's now much more comfortable around other dogs, and it's been heartwarming to see her build friendships and enjoy her time out on the trails. She especially looks forward to her 2-hour walks and daycare time with her doggy pals! Every staff member at Pacific Paw is not only friendly and communicative but also impressively knowledgeable when it comes to dog behavior. You can tell they genuinely care about the dogs they work with. A special shoutout to Michelle, the owner--she's been amazing to work with. I even booked private lessons with her to learn how to walk my dogs while managing a stroller, and her guidance made a world of difference. Pacific Paw has played such a positive role in Kaya's life. She's thriving, happy, and so much more confident. I wholeheartedly recommend Pacific Paw to any dog owner looking for experienced, compassionate, and professional care for their pup. Gusty is an Exceptional Trainer - Forever Grateful…read more We are beyond grateful for the incredible work Gusty did with Daisy, our rescue Rottweiler. Daisy needed not just training, but patience, understanding, and someone who truly cared about her. That is exactly what we found. Gusty easily connected with Daisy in a calm, confident, and compassionate way that immediately put both of us at ease. The progress Daisy made was truly remarkable. Not only did she learn important skills and boundaries, but she also gained confidence, trust, and a sense of security. Watching her transform into the happy, well-adjusted, and joyful dog has been a rewarding experience. Gusty also transformed me - I am less anxious about Daisy now. Gusty has a deep understanding of canine behavior, body language, and emotional needs and she applied that knowledge in thoughtful, effective ways. Every technique was explained clearly, and we always understood the "why" behind each step of the training process. Gusty's level of expertise is both rare and impressive. However, what makes this trainer so special is not just technical expertise, but genuine love for animals and deep respect for their unique stories - especially rescue dogs like Daisy. Daisy was in the best possible hands. We cannot recommend this trainer highly enough. Gusty helped Daisy become the very best version of herself. Thank you for giving Daisy such a beautiful start to her new life. We will always be thankful.

Our boy had been found wondering the streets of SJ. With my wife and I, he was the Biggest love bug. So cute, and funny, and cuddly. But we can only imagine the terrible experiences he had endured. He had a scar atop his head and was very nervous around new people, which led to behavior like growling and snapping at times. His fear was only made worse by social distancing and not being around new people. Once Covid settled a bit we sought out a trainer for him. I'll never forget the first day Dawna came to the house. Our pup growled and was very displeased that this stranger was in his space, and worse, trying to interact with him. Dawna was not a bit deterred, which I was impressed by but I remained skeptical. Fast forward something like 2 weeks: Dawna interacted with him with ease on training days and he loved receiving love and pets from her. We couldn't believe it. Dawna taught us how to train him and he was able to meet all kinds of new people and doggy friends on our outings. We are forever grateful. We only had 2 years with him. Cancer. Got koi? We do and have been taking care of them ourselves for years…read more Sadly one seemed to develop a large growth (oh no, is it a tumor?) so we were in need of a mobile vet. A koi owning friend suggested Dr Jessie Sanders. We called on a Friday and Sara was personable and compassionate, explaining our options. We were lucky to get a next day appt on a Sat. Dr Sanders showed up in the designated time window. She oozes professionalism and quickly assessed the situation. We were worried about our koi but Dr Sanders is reassuring -- she has excellent pond-side manners. She also has all the equipment she needs in her car, including an ultrasound. You can watch her diagnose the situation and she'll explain step-by-step. Hope you never need an an emergency fish vet but, if you do, Dr Sanders is an excellent choice. We will be using her for periodic checkups on our koi.

Be very wary of this fish vet! I'm a patient safety advocate usually dealing with human needs, but…read morethis vet tried to pull the wool over my eyes to cover up their incompetence. I contacted them originally in early November 2022 because one of my very large, expensive kois, had a patch of white on its side that was concerning me. Not only for the fish but for fear of infecting the 50+ koi in my very large pond. They kept insisting that I call them, but I kept telling them I need to make an appointment by text or email. They finally told me the earliest they could get the fish in their schedule was Nov 15th. I made the appointment but wrote back and said, "I'm assuming that you don't think the fish is going to get worse in the meantime?" (I had originally sent a photo of the problem, so they could see how bad it was). They wrote back and said, "we legally cannot diagnose from a photo or a description." I replied asking for the code section that prevents them from doing that on November 7th. Remember, there are veterinary services online where licensed vets can give you advice for a fee, without the vet actually seeing the pet! By November 11th, there had been no reply and my fish was dead. I wrote and told them I needed to cancel the appointment but still needed to know the code section that prevented them helping me. November 18th, still no reply, so I write again. They finally reply quoting CA Business and Professions Code Section 2032.1 saying that it prohibits a veterinarian from treating an animal without first having established a veterinarian-client-patient relationship. But they misinterpreted the law, I believe purposely to cover their tracks! The law states they can't "administer, prescribe, dispense or furnish a drug, medicine, appliance, or treatment of whatever nature for the prevention, cure, or relief of a wound, fracture or bodily injury or disease of an animal." It doesn't say they can't look at a photo and give a client interim life-saving advice. The law goes on to say, ""Telemedicine shall be conducted within an existing veterinarian-client-patient relationship, WITH THE EXCEPTION FOR ADVICE GIVEN IN AN 'EMERGENCY,' as defined under section 4840.5 of the code, until the patient(s) can be seen or transported to a veterinarian." and ""Under conditions of an emergency, a registered veterinary technician may render such lifesaving aid and treatment as may be prescribed under regulations adopted by the board pursuant to Section 4836.  Such emergency aid and treatment if rendered to an animal patient not in the presence of a licensed veterinarian may only be continued under the direction of a licensed veterinarian.  "Emergency" for the purpose of this section, means that the animal has been placed in a life-threatening condition where immediate treatment is necessary." Because they refused to do what the law allows for, my fish is dead and I still don't know if my whole pond is infected.
