Hello, my name is Ruby Wead and I have a few opinions about this restaurant. Where do I even start. As a elven year old I went here with my grandparents. No one was impressed I can tell you that for free. The corn was ice cold; not even just the corn mostly everything was ice cold. The mashed potatoes were instant with sour cream in them. Grocery store sushi is better than theirs. All the fruits and vegetables were canned, and the lettuce was bagged. But let me tell you this, the tiramisu was delicious! Service was not great. Quite a few of the workers were on their phone, while you were waiting to be assisted. The ambiance was fine, it was like a normal restaurant. Though this is not the place to impress someone. First time here with family and it is Father's Day. Expected more. Decent price point but disappointed with the quality and preparation of the food. The good: atmosphere interesting, lots of variety, eat all you can. Different shrimp flavors were tasty, ribs not bad, mushrooms and broccoli eatable. The not so good: crab legs hard to open and overcooked to the point where there was no meat or it was dry, mussels dry, sushi had no flavor and spongy, wafers for dessert were stale. Chocolate and other sauces all over counters and floors, bathrooms stylish but messy, too many people crowding the lines. Wanted to try the crepes as that looked to be one of the only really fresh and tasty custom item but too long of a line to wait. We all decided it wasn't worth returning. Walking in even the little water feature out front is non-working the water feature inside non-working everything looks like it's just been sitting there rotting away, and the staff just continues about their business. The booths are disgusting and falling apart. The floor in the tile have parts where they've just patched it up. The buffet area looks fine. Everything looks clean but everything also taste like it's been in the same pan over and over and over there's no seasoning. It's like wet and mushy and chewy. The sushi had warm cream cheese so I didn't dare to try any other sushi you can see in the back behind all of the buffet tables, the cooking areas and it just kind of takes away from the entire experience to see that it looks very outdated very gross. I spent $75 just for two people and two kids to have lunch. One of the kids was even sick and under. They asked us for our drink orders yet. Nothing at the table told us what type of drinks they had so we kinda had to guess. This wasn't even dinner so they didn't even have the full menu. also the website is very deceiving because it doesn't tell you what is for lunch and what is for dinner I saw no prime rib I saw maybe half of what their website shows the crab was covered in dirt pieces so I just didn't even the cakes aren't even made in house they're your basic store-bought put it out for your cake so gross basically all the desserts. I am saddened to change my three star review to a lonely one star. When we arrived we were barely greeted almost inaudible woman who didn't look up from the desk. The facility inside and out isn't being maintained well. Today the food has been sitting out for quite awhile to the point is dried out, and the employees were standing/around or sitting chatting. The doors to the kitchen were propped open and loud talking and clanking carried out to the buffet area. Haven't been here in a while, had some visits where the selection seemed less, but went back (12.28.24) and was very pleased.we went at 6pm on a Saturday night and it was already packed with a full waiting room, but they seated us pretty quickly. Prices have went way up! The staff did not check up on our table just waited at the front door for more guests to come in but wouldn't take care of current guests. Food was good compared to other buffets but I did find hair in my noodles. The seating was all ripped up a piece of metal was hanging out from one of the railings. The bathrooms wreak couldn't stay in there longer than a minute. Vulgar Graffiti everywhere in there. Literally right after making this post I went to get my kid some ice cream and there was none left and one of the workers came behind me and told me to "get get go shoo move" because I was in her way. We visited The Journey Buffet for the first time. It was my oldest bday. The server made a cake for him topped with whipped cream & chocolate drizzle. Sang happy birthday to him. Went here for a weekday dinner. Definitely a quantity over quality type of place - kind of expected to be honest. Based on other reviews, there are usually crab legs, roast duck, and a chocolate fountain - none were available this day (in fact, they left a label saying roast duck but they put green beans underneath). They did have prime rib, which was surprisingly good and they also had dragonfruit (albeit underripe), which is extremely rare to find in a Chinese buffet. Everything else was mediocre to bad - most item in the normal buffet trays seem to reheated frozen food or prepackaged mixes from food service companies. They had stations for to-order crepe and noodle bowls, both were fine. You can tell the noodle broth is made from powder. The sushi was freshly prepared but combined mushy rice with limp stuffing/toppings. We had no issues with the service; seemed to be pretty standard for a buffet place. The silverware and tables were a bit on the sticky and grimy side - again, not unexpected for this type of restaurant. Pricing was a bit on the expensive side - $20.99 a person. If you want a lot of food and a lot of variety there's really nothing wrong with going to The Journey. read more

When it opened, it was known for low prices, fresh food and a chocolate fountain surrounded with gargantuan strawberries, marshmallows along with other fruits to dip. While the huge fountain doesn't erupt from the restaurant's center at lunchtime (it maybe dinner only) there's still something for everyone. Let me first say... I was very hesitant on trying The Journey due to all the differing reviews BUT I was pleasantly surprised! If you are looking for an Americanized Chinese buffet, this is your place. Tons of options ranging from sushi, crepes, mashed potatoes, multiple Chinese dishes, fruit, and dessert. My husband was hungry for shrimp and sushi. He thought going to the Journey would be a good place for fresh sushi. We went early, about 6:00pm. (They open at 5 on Saturday). Upon telling her it was just us she raised her arm, as if directing a wagon train, for us to follow her to a booth. We were greeted at the table by wait staff named Emmy. She was friendly and offered us a drink menu suggesting sake for a drink. We bought the sparkling sake $13.95, it was really nice. Kind of sweet but not too much, perfect for spicy flavored food. The buffet is set up by salad and fruit, Sushi, American food with roast beef and ribs, fried food, Oriental custom stir fry and Chinese foods. In the center is a chocolate fondue (It used to be a chocolate fountain) My husband enjoyed shrimp cocktail, Kim chi and mussels. Then, sushi. I joined in the sushi, spicy tuna, tuna, shrimp on rice, tuna on rice. In addition my husband had clam and a couple other fish items. We felt that the sushi we ate actually paid for the meal. At this point, I am full but my husband got fried shrimp, soft shell crab, pot stickers and some other seafood dish. We were very pleased with our food at this point but thought we should try the prime rib. If I would have stopped prior to the prime rib my review might be different but the meat was awful. Raw. Tough. Some kind of roast but not prime rib. Dessert was coconut cookies and I wanted sesame balls. They were out but Emmy talked with a chef who made a new batch. She came to our table with a cup full and said she hoped I liked them. A kind jester that was not expected. Our bill with the sake was about $70.00. I had coffee which costs $3.50. (My husband commented that I could have had a beer for the cost of the coffee) It is no frills dining, with limited verbal interaction with the team members. Plates are cleared quickly and there is no rush dining. Would we go back? Terrible service and extremely disrespectful behavior. My family recently visited Journey Buffet and had an awful experience. They knowingly accepted my mom's Visa gift card even though they couldn't actually process it, and still charged it. That's already shady, but what happened next was beyond unacceptable. While my mom went to the bathroom, the staff at the front desk started mocking her, saying things like "Oh, I want my money back," and laughing about it. I didn't hear it at the time, but my brother did--and if I had, I would've said something right then and there. What makes this even worse is that my mom was nothing but respectful and patient with them the whole time. She was kind and calm even when things weren't going right, and they still chose to treat her like a joke behind her back. This kind of unprofessional and disgusting behavior should not be happening in any business. Nobody deserves to be treated like that--especially someone who was being polite. Today's visit was really different with some changes. They improved their Covid precautions. There are directional signs. They definitely have attentive servers at each buffet section. I only saw a few people who were not following the rules (also Marion Co. is still under the mask mandate) of covering their noses. Two guys were not proper with their masks. I get there upon opening so I freely eat (until I feel uncomfortable going to the buffet). However, today, I ate my heart out (or should I say per my pic my face - dessert). I think the weekday lunch price may have gone up a couple of dimes. The food was excellent. This time I also got a flavorful steak. They have signs up about the snow crab shortage. Came for a quick bite on a Friday night after traveling. The restaurant was busy, which for us is always a good sign. When we walked in, I was immediately impressed with the decor and ambiance. We were seated and waited for quite a while to flag down a staff member for our tea. After we started eating, they asked us to move over a table as they had an unexpected large party. While understandable, it was kind of rude. The best part was the food, by far. Every dish I tried was cooked well. The prime rib was a solid medium, the asparagus and broccoli still crispy and not overcooked, and an array of things we enjoyed sampling. Also, I was impressed the sushi was also fresh. The food here at this restaurant is pretty typical nothing special. It's just a normal Chinese buffet as anywhere else that carries a lot of the same items as any other ones. We needed to go to Sam's club yesterday so we decided to try this place since it was lunchtime. The quantity of food here is massive but the quality is lacking. As others have said they do have more than just Chinese food, there is American foods as well. They have two cooks at the grill cooking steak and chicken so I got a piece of steak, it had good flavor but be prepared to chew a lot because it's what my dad would call chainsaw steak I tried the chicken wings and they were ok. We put small portions on our plate and didn't even finish the first plate. $40 for two at lunchtime was not a win for us. They did have seafood and sushi for those who enjoy that. I consider it almost amazing that I've never before been to The Journey, one of Indy's better known buffet options with a strong emphasis on Asian food options along with a smattering of Americanized foods such as prime rib, chicken, and others. My Christmas Day dining is usually in a restaurant. Today was no exception and a friend with whom I often spend the holidays served up the idea of heading to The Journey. I'm not super big on buffets and especially buffets that are rather pricey, but this was Christmas and I decided to both splurge a bit and snag myself a Yelp review. As someone whose primary other buffet option is at the Chinese joint at 72nd and Keystone, suffice it to say that The Journey borders on fancy schmantzy. While you can certainly tell it has been here for a while in the form of some clearly worn decor and even booths with some rips and tears, The Journey is generally warm, comfortable, surprisingly well spaced, and just much nicer than I actually expected. They have a handful of accessible parking spots, though none were available when I arrived. I found a decent spot on the side of the building that offered me the likelihood of maintaining wheelchair access when I departed. It was also relatively close to a curb cut. The double-sided, double glass entryway definitely has some heavy doors. If you have upper-body weakness, some assistance may be needed. Once you get in, there's a hosting area and the interior is basically several somewhat divided dining areas and then the food areas toward the back. I do really like that there's some division between dining and food. It just makes dining more peaceful. In terms of wheelchair access, I found the entire restaurant pretty solid. There are a couple dining areas that have somewhat of an incline, though there are plenty of accessible spaces. They put myself and my friend at a wrapped booth, a bit of an odd choice, but it worked. The dining area is generally accessible, though somewhat dependent on friendly diners. It can get a bit tight. I had no problem, though I'm pretty used to being independent. I think some wheelchair users would struggle. The good news is that you do have drinks brought to the table, so there's no having to maneuver with drinks. I'd read some of the reviews in advance related to service and was prepared for concerns. I honestly had none. Our service was friendly, attentive, and great with refills but also not hovering. Nearly all the food areas were attended, though I found most people friendly. Yes, I did get the sense they were watching closely - but I was friendly and so were they. I tried a variety of items and was mostly pleased. Top of the line? Heavens no. This is a buffet. But, it is vastly superior to the Keystone place and really only the roast duck seemed off. The desserts were fairly basic and nothing special, though my friend enjoyed his pecan pie. Chinese food doesn't always agree with me, but I've had no adverse reactions here. Items seemed fresh and I enjoyed them. Asian items were the stand-out here. It seemed like most strictly American items were weaker. Overall, this was a fine way to spend Christmas Day for lunch. My friend and I took our time and never felt rushed despite a steady crowd. We dined for a couple hours - most of it spent talking. Our drinks were refilled, the atmosphere was pleasant, the food was fine (perhaps lower in terms of actual "value" since they were charging dinner prices since it was a holiday), and service was solid. From other reviews, it seems evident that things are a bit hit-and-miss here but all I can go on is my own experience and while I won't say I'll visit The Journey often this definitely satisfied on Christmas Day and I'd definitely return. read more
