Great happy hour opportunities and upscale dining in rural Illinois. A quick jaunt across an empty lot from the Holiday Inn, the restaurant attached to McCormick Event Center is a friendly and relaxed venue to enjoy an upscale meal. Add in my Candlelight rewards points and I'm all in to return! My first visit I chose to dine only on appetizers; they did not disappoint (see pictures). Personally, I would err on the side of the seafood options (which is a strange recommendation for a land locked, midwestern establishment). The SCALLOPS and SHRIMP were the best out of all of 'em! Wine is typically $8 to $10 a glass, and the tender I had delivered a healthy pour. If you're into signature cocktails, your pocketbook will also enjoy the 4-6 p.m. happy hour menu which offers 'em half off. My second visit I went all in on the DUCK BREAST and BRUSCHETTA. The duck was cooked well and served in slices over a seasoned rice medley. I had asked to skip the rice for BRUSSELS SPROUT side (which they brought anyway), but I'm glad I did. Sweet and spicy combination was a welcome pairing with the richness of the duck.

First of all Bryan was our waiter. He was wonderful and colorful and gave great recommendations. We started with the bacon bourbon scallops. Delicious doesn't start to cover it. We had the rib-eye and the duck. Mmmmmm so scrumptious!! Perfectly cooked and flavorful. We finished the Andes mint cheesecake. We should've started with it. Holy man. So so yummy. Great atmosphere loved it start to finish!

The food was very good and the service was just OK. It is a little bit pricey though.

We both shared a mixed appetizer Pros: + Real good bang for our buck. Roughly $60 after tip with a couple of drinks and an appetizer. + Food portions on the tall end. Most people shouldn't leave hungry + Service was pretty good despite being crazy busy. + Really enjoyed the appetizer. + Good place to bring a date. Cons: - For me the fish and veggies could have been a little better. The veggies specifically were a tad dry and bland. I don't get perch often and maybe I missed something but it was more mushy than flaky Bottom Line: Solid stop worth an additional shot.

I paid the host for my order and was told it would be right out. It was taking so long that even the host went back to check on my order 3x. The manager comes to the front with an attitude scolding the host then turned her fat aggression at me saying..."I took the order and you were late picking it up!" First of all your dumbass was in the back you didn't even see when I arrived! Secondly they didn't even have a name attached to the order! And third since when did it start that an employees argues with a customer? If I were candlelight...I'd get rid of that rude fat sweaty bitch!

I found this local family restaurant and had an excellent experience. I walked in and placed an order for carry out so I could take it back to my hotel. I ordered cheese enchiladas, bean dip, chips and salsa. While I was waiting for my food to be prepared I had a chance to look around the dining area. The interior decor is eclectic. Very unique collection of items on display. Service was super friendly. I could tell the employees genuinely cared about their customers. My food was ready quickly, and everything I had ordered was excellent. The chips were phenomenal, house made, crispy and delicious. Salsa was fresh and tasty. The rice was savory and beans were a good texture and flavorful. Enchiladas were very tasty. The menu is extensive with many unique entrées I will plan to return the next time I'm in the area .

I recognize they are operating in a different environment, especially being over two hours away from the competition found in Chicago. In any case, I found myself hungry in Rock Falls, so I stopped in at La Familia. I had the opportunity to try a carnitas taco, an al pastor taco, and a tamale. I also ordered an horchata to drink. The food was a mixed bag, but with some notable high points. The highlight of the meal was the tamale. The exterior was soft and flavorful, and the interior was appropriately meaty with a good, mild flavor. I believe this was my first experience with a tamale, and it was an enjoyable one at that. For the tacos, I appreciated that the proteins, onion, and cilantro were all in balance and that they didn't skimp on the meat. I am a traditionalist and asked for my tacos with just onion and cilantro, rather than their standard of lettuce, tomato, and cheese. While the meat had a mild flavor and wasn't completely bland, it needed something more to stand on its own. To be fair, there is salsa, lime, and two varieties of El Yucateco hot sauce available. However, being the purist I am, it is my belief that food should be able to stand alone without condiments. That said, with these tacos, it felt like something was lacking--perhaps sauce, crema, or pineapple with the al pastor. I'd also like to call out the complimentary chips and salsa offered at the beginning of the meal. I loved that the salsa was served in a little spouted container and that the tortilla chips were clearly homemade. They were a bit unusual, with layers flaking off (not a bad thing, just not often seen in restaurants). I also liked that they had a little bit of salt... far too many places skip that, and how can you skip the salt? My horchata was an absolute delight with great flavor. It was a tad sweet for my taste, but that's more a matter of personal preference than a technical issue. The service was a major highlight. It was very kind, knowledgeable, and attentive. The staff was also quick and efficient. Final Verdict: La Familia is very solid and respectable as a family-run, home-cooking-style restaurant. While to be 100% honest it doesn't hold a candle to some of the things you might find in downtown Chicago, Pilsen, or Cicero, that isn't the expectation. With this in mind, it does its job well. While I'm not going to come all the way back to Rock Falls just to eat here, when I find myself in town, I can't say I would be totally against it.
