However the only thing that saved my trips here was the HUGE sale I bought 4 sets of shoes and it was a fantastic deal. The only way I will shop for shoes if I ever need any would be via a liquidation sale. But now I am set for a whilst. This store is not going out of business as previously thought. The only Hellers going out of business is the one in pleasantville.

There were no other customers there. No-one from the staff greeted me; no-one offered to help. Two women - salespeople? - were chatting at the counter. Within 8 or 10 minutes I found two pairs of shoes, and brought them to the counter and asked for my size. Again, no-one offered to help me. One of the women did get one of these pairs, but said she didn't have the other. She handed me the shoebox, and then started to pull back the mat from the front door. As I put one shoe on, she (wordlessly) turned off the internal store lights. I guess this was my hint to get out - that they were closing. I left. I was disappointed - I had really wanted and needed to get some new Dansko clogs that are my everyday walking shoes. Sadly - giving up on a local store is difficult - I won't return. I understand that retail business is difficult and competitive, but Heller's doesn't seem to understand this. I guess Heller's can do without business - at least my business. At any rate, I'll go back to Harry's Shoes on Manhattan's Upper West Side, where they're downright eager to help people, and don't close shop until all customers are finished with their transactions.

Or they OVER buy on a trend from the 2000's....There's no variety. There's nothing that makes this place worth a visit. Most of the staff is just as uninspiring. They offer a halfhearted greeting when you walk in, but beyond that, they're completely disengaged--mostly standing around with their arms crossed, looking like they'd rather be anywhere else. Which makes sense because they barely make minimum wage, which is concerning considering how much the owner walks away with year after year. I probably wouldn't be inspired to help customers either. It's pretty obvious that the owner of this store couldn't care less about their employees--or their customers, for that matter. Unless you're looking for outdated clothes and indifferent service, I'd recommend shopping elsewhere. Go shop at the family owned business Richard's in Greenwich much better selection, happy employees and OWNERS!

Darien sport shop seems to have survived the online revolution with help from, you guessed it Santa…read moreClaus. Every year Santa comes and kids line up from across the country to sit on his lap and tell them what they want. In Darien, that could be a new Canada goose jacket (available at DSS) or a new pair of Nordic skis (available at DSS). Maybe even a new Range Rover (not available but DSS can order it). And for the adults who brave the intense December line to catch a glimpse of the big guy, they setup a makeshift bar (no charge of course) with Bloody Mary's, Mimosas, Beer, Wine, all the fixings. Back to Santa, did I mention this guy is the real deal? He claims that he runs a bird seed shop in the off season, lol. Yea Kringle, I ain't buying it. Tell those elves at the North Pole that the socks you brought me in '94 were bull$#&!. Jk I'm a good boy I take it back.
