I peed my pants a little when I first read about this place on Pegasus News. And then a little more when I read Dan W's glowing review on Side Dish shortly afterward. It was all over when I walked in and saw that gleaming case of goodies, the most exciting of which (for me) were the Girl Scout cookie donuts!! I have been VERY good this year and not eaten one dang cookie! But then I ordered 16 donuts, so...maybe I cancelled that out. These folks are really creative (and super friendly to boot). I am a big fan of Hypnotic Donuts and have to say that a lot of the Hole Thing Donuts were even more intriguing than what HD is putting out. Pie donuts?? Peanut butter banana fritters? Not just bacon, but dark chocolate, maple bacon, and sea salt? A THAI donut with peanut butter, red pepper flakes, and sriracha for goodness sake!?!? Plus sausage rolls, cinnamon buns...it was very intimidating, and I ordered so much because it was so far I didn't know when I'd be back. Also, my buttload of donuts only cost a hair over $15 bucks, so that's pretty affordable to me when I've spent the same amount on far fewer goodies at some other specialty bake shops. Looking at you, cake balls! Anyhoo. I took home my bounty and got to sampling. I started out with a glazed donut and a couple donut holes just to get a taste of the standards. Honestly, not the best I've had. They seemed a bit dry and chewy to me. I'm not sure if they were hot and fresh or when they had been made, or if it was because it was 30-45 minutes later by the time I got home and started eating. I moved on to alll the other stuff, and was kinda disappointed. It would take me far too long to go into what I thought about each individual donut but overall I liked the chocolate cake-based donuts best, and found the ones with the yeast donut base were a little chewy and not melt-in your mouth. The chai cake donut also seemed a little dry. My favorites were the s'more donut filled with marshmallow creme, the savannah smile lemon GSC donut (although I like HD's Lucy in the Sky better, mainly because the donuts themselves are better there) and the Thai one, which was actually really, really good. And she made that one custom for me so I wonder if that had anything to do with why it tasted fresher. Oh, and the fritters actually tasted better the second day. I am no fritter expert though, as that's not something I usually get. So all in all, I give creativity and fun factor 5+ stars. Taste of the donuts themselves were more like 2-3 stars but the toppings usually made them a solid 3 or sometimes 4 stars. I would say check them out because they're a great local business that Forney is lucky to have but just be prepared that you're mostly going for the innovative toppings and stuff rather than a great basic donut. read more

I love sweets and I love donuts but I'm just not a fan. :-/ I've tried about 12 varieties over the past year hoping I would fall in love with one of them. I've had a couple of them that were not just bad but downright repulsive. I don't know if it was just a bad batch but the custard in the Cream Brûlée was grainy and had separated. I literally spit it back out. It tasted like raw egg yolk with grains of sand in it. I was exited to see the fritters! I ordered an apple one after months of stopping by several Thursdays and Fridays to be told they don't have them ready yet. The grease literally ran down my chin. I couldn't eat a donut for a month I was so repulsed. As for the customer service I've seen the locals being greeting with smiles and friendliness but as with another person stated I've been in several times and haven't been warmly welcomed by anyone but the young cashier. I've been waited on by the owner but she wasn't friendly, warm, or even very courteous. It may be that I've asked for a doughnut they advertise as selling on Thursdays and Fridays but never have any ready when I stop by. It hasn't been that that sold out just that they weren't prepared when they opened. Restaurants that consistently run out of staples, fail to open on time, or open completely unprepared are things that annoy me. This place seem to be repeat offender of those three of those pet peeves. read more

I am a big fan of The Hole Thing, their Facebook page is one way to keep up with what is going on at THT. Due to the unique nature of their donuts I just wish they would label the donut rack so you can see the flavors without having to ask each time. I just cannot make up my mind on this place. My kid LOVES their blueberry cake donut holes and I'm a big fan of the blueberry cinnamon roll. The kolaches are nothing special or fancy, but they hit the spot. Admittedly, I haven't tried any of their "fancy" donuts yet but that's only because I never know what's in the case. Nothing is labeled. I'm sure I could just ask but I always feel like I'm bothering the folks behind the counter. I have never received friendly service there, only an obligatory tight-lipped smile. However, I did notice that they were super friendly with a few groups/couples before and after me and seemed to know them on a personal level. I feel like this might be a place where you receive a better reception if you go to church with someone working there, your kid plays t-ball with their kid, or your Mama's cousin lives across the street from them. You gotta' know someone to get a smile? I really want to like this place. I've worked in small-town, locally-owned bakeries before and LOVE the experience of being in one, but I'm just not sold on the staff. First I'd like to start off by stating that I will def be going back & I would recommend it if you are ever in Forney from the 5am-noon. As for previous comments about it being pricey, I would have to disagree, they cost what donuts cost everywhere. Also about the owner being friendly I would also have to disagree. She was not friendly, I mentioned a 20% off discount & she seemed to be upset about it & was pretty rude about it. She was however really nice to all the "usuals/locals." My GF follows Hole Thing on their Facebook page*. They're pretty good about posting "what's in the case". We drool over their selections but didn't think that a 50 mile round trip could be worth it. After a night of insomnia, driving out to Forney at 5am just seemed like a normal thing to do when sleep isn't an option. I tried the BBQ pocket and the Chocolate-Bacon-Chipotle donut. Loved them both. The BBQ pocket was like a cowboy kolache, or a warm roll stuffed with chopped beef and a side of sauce. The Chocolate-Bacon-Chipotle started off sweet and salty, but finished with a subtle bit of heat. Yes, donuts can have multiple flavor profiles. And they have a Keurig coffee maker with probably 20 flavors to choose from too. read more

Well when I first walked in I saw 5 people at work. Almost all of them looked up at me at least once, but all continued to work. I stood there for about three or four minutes and finally someone said we'll be with you shortly. So then I end up standing there an additional three to four minutes before finally someone came up wiping their hands on their apron to come assist me. If your looking for a snack, the kolaches are great snacks, but not big enough to be a meal unless you get ALLOT. Not the best I have ever had. We recently moved to Forney and were on our way back to our hometown when we decided to stop at "The Hole Thing." We ordered 2 kolaches ($1.75 ea) and half dozen holes (1.20). The donut holes are great, and big but just any regular donut hole; nothing "special" about them. The kolaches; however were quite the opposite. They are SO SMALL! If you've ever been to Shipley's donut, thier kolaches are three times as big and cheaper. Overall, pricey and small kolaches. I've seen allot of reviews about the service, but our experience was great with service. It was a busy Saturday morning around 930am and they were pretty efficient and nice. My only complaint is the kolaches: which was our main purpose for coming. Our total was $8.00 including two drinks. 5 stars for bravado...2 for execution. The owner was very nice and even made us a maple bacon bar because they sold out or something, only problem was the bacon had that baco bits consistency and felt like i was eating smokey rocks. Got both a smoked brisket and pulled pork roll...not a single hint of smoke was to be had and they where luke warm. Bbq sauce was good, so was the crust. I grew up on Shipleys and The whole things donuts and kolaches are like the antithesis of what I believe a donut and kolache should be. Maybe I'm a crazy, but I like my donut light and fluffy, melting in my mouth,with icing you want to bath in. I like my jalapeno and cheese kolache tucked into a yeasty pillow soft kolache roll with real jalapenos and silky smooth, melty american cheese. I dont like big bready donuts you have to work on and I also dont like the jalapeno and cheese part of my kolache included as an ingredient in the biscuit like sausage wrapper. If this style of donut shop is your jam, power to you, I will stick with Shipleys. read more

My family has attempted to try The Hole Thing several times but they are almost always sold out an hour or more before the posted closing time! They even BRAG about selling out an hour and 1/2 early on their Facebook page! I'd rather see "I'm sorry; we'll make more next time" instead of "YAY we sold out super early AGAIN!" We did make it in time ONCE an hour before closing when they had a tray of glazed and one chocolate left. They were decent donuts. I don't doubt their special creations are good, but I prefer better customer service and preparation. I wouldn't mind if they closed at 11.
