While visiting Prescott for the first time, my friend and I stumbled across this little gem. The staff was super friendly and extremely helpful. I was impressed by their selection of backpacking and bouldering gear, as well as their selection of footwear. Prices were great, considerably lower than other shops I've seen. I left with a Kleen Kanteen travel mug (I haven't seen this color elsewhere!) and a lot of stickers! Definitely pay this place a visit and support your local outdoor gear shop! read more

I went to FIVE stores yesterday in search of a replacement for my worn out OBOZ sawtooth shoes. I found a lousy selection at all but one store, my last stop at the Hike Shack. I spent an hour trying on shoes and had great service which is so important when it comes to selecting shoes. I ended up with a pair of Men's Oboz Firebrand II Low B-Dry Waterproof shoes. Love the shoes and service and glad to give my business to a small local business owner! I am a senior on a budget and they were so nice to give me a discount for being a military veteran. This is really appreciated! I love REI too but this store beats an expensive long drive to Flagstaff. Cheers, Dan M. read more

Impressive for a small store. They have the normal stuff needed for hiking and backpacking with a few specialty items too. Their pricing is competitive with the large online outdoor store, so I'll shop here instead. Went in for new hiking boots. The young man (wish I would have asked his name) had the patience to help two customers at once. I told him my issues with boots & shoes. He picked out a pair that would fit my low volume foot. They felt pretty darn good in the shop and were perfect on the short, flat, relatively easy hike (gasp) the following morning (ya I know you're not supposed to take brand new shoes immediately on a hike) . If you're in downtown Prescott and hiking is your bag, I highly recommend this shop. read more

Excellent boot fit shop! I worked as a boot fit specialist years ago, so I'm pretty picky about shoes. I usually wind up fitting whoever I come in with, because most clerks only know how to give you shoe sizes, narrow or wide. When I brought my teenage son in for his first pair of quality hiking shoes, I was really impressed. The clerk spent a long time recommending the perfect shoe, and was very critical of the overall fit, making adjustments, checking and retying the laces and making sure that we got the best fit we could. She was a true professional, displaying a skill and talent for fitting that I thought was extinct. One of the best hike shops I've visited. read more

SUPER EXPENSIVE. They have a ton of good stuff there but the pricing leaves one wondering how they have stayed in business. Example; Canyon Cooler Outfitter Series 35 QT Sandstone color sells on Amazon for $199 and can be found for as little as $189 elsewhere. They have it for $299, $100 more then the next highest seller anywhere that I was able to find it. This is just an example there were other things that were equally over-priced. Also while we were in there the women who was running the place seemed a bit to "hovery" with us but that may have just been a misunderstanding or something. It was enough tho that I felt it needed to be mentioned. Needless to say we left and won't be returning. read more

I stumbled across the place on accident. I saw a sign on their window indicating that they carried Mystery Ranch gear, which is top tier and hard to find. I went in to simply browse. The employees were the most patient and attentive of any outdoor store I've visited. They answered many, many questions and provided valuable advice, gear tips, feedback, and just general friendliness. My wife and I were looking at different products, and they helped us both separately, while still navigating/assisting other customers. This isn't REI (sorry, I used to love you guys), where you will get initial attention for the staff member to hide or never return. There is no feigned relatability time "quota" for each customer. That comment will make sense when going from a big box store to this place. I am so grateful for the time they shared with my wife to get her set up and educated on backpacking. I'd like to specifically thank Zach for his guidance, KJ for her radiant personality and tips, and Jake for his wisdom. However, I'd like to thank Rider (the dog) the most, for his companionship throughout the experience. Will definitely be back. I highly recommend them! read more

I returned to the Hike Shack in early May 2002 to purchase a new pair of hiking boots. The Oboz Sawtooth MID boots purchased the previous year had stood up fairly well. Although the laces did fall apart literally with 4 months of purchase. This year the Hike Shack's supply of Oboz hiking boots was quite limited. I ended up purchasing the leather uppers Bridget MID boots. They felt fine in the store. However within a week of wearing these new Oboz during my nightly outing of about 2.5 miles. i developed several serious blisters on my left foot. I was disappointed but resolved to return the boots. A call to the Hike Shack revealed that unlike REI and other retailers, the HS would not accept return of the boots if they'd been worn on an actual hike. Who?! hikes around their living room!? I will not patronize this local establishment again. read more

I live in Chandler Arizona but every time I come up to Prescott this is one of my stops! The staff is always awesome and informative!

I have been a regular customer and I like to support local business. But I will never shop here again and I will discourage others. My partner made a minor purchase that was inadequate. He was open to an in-store credit. The owner's response was FU. Keeping a couple bucks was more important than keeping customers. The owner lost two customers and perhaps others based on our reference. This store appears to not stand by the quality of their products. A sale is a sale to them. read more

Great customer service! Took ample time to listen to my husband's foot needs and fit him accordingly. Their return policy was clearly explained and the receipt was signed on the back. That way any employee could fully refund the purchase in case he needed to return the shoes. Totally satisfied with our shopping experience... we'll be back! read more

When I first walked in the store was completely empty, no customers, no employees. I walked around for a couple of minutes and could hear someone talking in the back office area. I called out "Hello, is anybody here?" I made sure I was loud enough to be heard, but not so loud as to be rude. No response... I could still hear talking coming from the back. We walked into The Hike Shack, while wandering through Old Town Prescott, just looking for bug spray, which we bought. I also needed new hiking shoes, and they had New Balance, which have been the only shoes, up until now, that would fit my wide feet. There seemed to be only person working the whole store, but she was amazing! She actually measured both feet, brought me the New Balance, and a pair of Salomons, that she thought I might like. The Salomons felt like gloves on my feet, and had plenty of room in the forefoot, but were also narrow enough at the heel to feel perfect! I've never been so happy about buying a pair of shoes. This store is a gem, and so is their sales clerk! read more
