Some things that were weren't fully prepared for was the snow storm that had come in and all of the ice on the trail. (Being from North California, we don't really expect the desert to have snow). We found out a few days in advance so made plans to get some YakTracks or spikes for our shoes. Most sporting stores don't carry them, and when they do, they are expensive. While calling around we found this store. We were told that they had them in stock and they opened at 8am Sunday morning (this was reconfirmed). Come 830 the store was not open. Were were ready to give up and give this one star and a bad review. When a local, who knew the owner, heard about our situation. They called the him, and he came and opened his shop. Apparently they had changed to winter hours, and that he was not the one who confirmed hours on the phone. Once we were inside of the shop, he helped us get the missing gear we needed, and told us about the trail conditions. He was genuinely concerned about our safety and well being, and even asked us to contact him is we had any kind of trouble while in the park. Once we left the store, (I went from being personally prepared for any situation, to extremely anxious at what to expect), we felt like we were in a better state. Thank you so much for all of your help. I really appreciate it. And to the local who made it all happen- thanks to you as well, we had an amazing hike and got out safe. Couldn't have done it without this store and the service we received. My family forgot all about the issue with the time.

Boots and shirts are there for both men and women, but I just did not see anything at all that would seem appealing. Also fence posts for building your own corral. For boots, I would recommend buying online, or else go to Boot Barn if you want to buy in person. Of course you will have to drive to the Phoenix metro area for their outlets, but that should not be a surprise. For meats, I would suggest the local Fry's Food store. Decent prices and a large selection. I do believe that buying local is a good idea. But of course the stores have to have what you want, and have it at a price which at least is in the right ballpark. So, sorry L5S folks, I just cannot see why anyone would want to buy anything there. Too bad.

Buck is number 7 in the world at cracking a bullwhip and number 5 in the world with a quick draw (yep, verified with Guinness Book of World Records). He travels all over the country, teaching people about real cowboys-not the Hollywood version. He taught me how to crack a bullwhip in about one minute and I took the head off of the snake....which was a plastic straw. But still! I totally did it!!! Such a fascinating life to hear about and an incredibly kind human who is trying to keep teaching the cowboy way to kids in Williams with lessons, or on a speaking engagement circuit. If you get the chance to stop in, don't hesitate to do so!

The staff was friendly, and knowledgeable. They had a variety of guns, and for kids they had GoatGuns and other items. They had a bathroom for customers which was well kept and clean. I came to Flagstaff on MDW for one reason, and one reason only - to hike to the top of Humphreys…read morePeak. I'd been keeping an eye on the reviews on All Trails (one of the very few features I actually like on that app, but that's a story for another day) and knew several weeks in advance that snow on the mountain was a distinct possibility. When I made eye contact with Humphreys two days before summiting and literally saw tons of snow from about 60 miles away - along with very recent reviews warning about it - I knew I had to make a pit stop beforehand. It would PROBABLY be an exaggeration to say Peace Surplus saved my life, but without it (and its supplies), I don't think I get to the top of Humphreys Peak, or even close. I stopped by last Sunday, the day before my hike, knowing that I needed to get some type of traction on my hindpaws. I considered getting poles (which I've been mulling for years - we're getting close there), but the spikes for the hiking sneakers seemed paramount. I located them very easily right off to the side of the shoe section. I honestly don't know if $62 for these is insane or not, but they made the difference the following day so I can't sit here and say they aren't worth it. An absolute gamechanger, and something I can use going forward in less dramatic adventures if there's icy/snowy conditions afoot. Beyond my primary purchase, I was very intrigued by the little food/grocery store section off to the side by the entrance. It has a lot of hiking snacks that can usually be procured easily at a gas station (cough cough Clif Bar cough cough), but also the ones that are a bit harder to find without Amazon's help, like the Honey Stinger waffle, which for sure came in handy the following morning. There's a definite emphasis on overnight camping/thru-hiking, so there were quite a few freeze-dried dinners, etc. as well. It was an impressive selection. Everyone here was super friendly and nice. The people at the register immediately looked around for another potential customer to ring up the minute they were done with their prior patron, and several times I could overhear presumably managers spitballing how to allocate their staff based on where the immediate needs were. While I was in there, a few employees were outside handling a holiday sale, I believe, so I imagine it gets a little tougher to gameplan when literally some of your people aren't even in the store. No wasted energy at this place. I don't feel like I did more than skim the surface of what this store offered, but they had what I wanted and needed in the moment, and for sure they get some credit for my successful Humphreys ascent. Give Peace a chance.

BOOM: Hydrogen peroxide. The folks running the store are so sweet and were very helpful with us renting canoes for the day too! We signed our paperwork inside and then the guys helped us load it onto our cars and showed us how to strap em down. I don't have roof racks so they loaned us pool noodles which worked perfectly!
