    Quality of care was excellent. My husband loved the food! Rehab was excellent, as well! Very friendly staff!

Within days of being moved to Maiden Park, my husband suffered verbal abuse as well as physically rough treatment from several aides on the overnight shift who would not assist him with the Apex, telling him that they had bad backs, they didn't know how he got accepted for residence in the first place, it was ridiculous that they had to do this, that he needed to do all of the work himself and that they were not familiar with the Apex and he would have to tell them what they needed to do. When they did finally lift him, my husband repeatedly told them to put him in his wheelchair instead of the recliner in his room. They refused to do what he asked and put him in the recliner anyway, causing him further distress and making it almost impossible to lift him again. Upon discussing this with Jennifer Gilboe the next day she informed us that, after checking with administration, Maiden Park's policy for Enhanced Assisted Living is a light one-hand assist, not nearly the assistance that McLaughlin witnessed during her assessment or the implied level that I was led to believe during conversations with salesperson Kayla Gaiennie. The next day Sarah Marcello told me that my husband was beyond the care level that the facility could provide. She said that administration would not hold us to the agreement made for admission. My husband was sent to emergency and admitted to the hospital. When the social worker from the hospital contacted Maiden Park, Gilboe described the enhanced level of assistance as a LIGHT one-hand assist with an Apex and a two-hand assist WITHOUT the Apex. The social worker asked Gilboe twice to clarify the two-hand assist and she replied again, it is a two-hand assist WITHOUT the Apex. The social worker expressed concern for my husband's safety at Maiden Park, especially since some of the people who would be doing the two-hand assist, with no equipment, had made it clear that they have bad backs and that they did not have to perform at the level he needed. In the meantime, Gilboe and McLaughlin set up an assessment at the hospital. During an email exchange between Ryan and Marcello, Marcello noted that she had no knowledge of the assessment appointment and that she could not be present at the assessment. It should not have been set and that the information she had received from the hospital about my husband's condition did not come close to Maiden Park's required level of admittance. Later that afternoon, McLaughlin contacted the social worker at the hospital and said that the assessment was cancelled. The administrator sent us a reply after getting all the above information, and them some, stating that "their internal investigation" said that "all the allegations were unsubstantiated" BUT they had terminated an employee who said that my husband belonged in a nursing home and that he never should have been accepted at Maiden Park. We are curious how an employee was terminated for making the remarks listed but the internal investigation found all the allegations unsubstantiated. I was also told by a former employee, who left of their own accord, that the staff regularly comments that they don't know how new residents get accepted and complain about the level of care they need to provide them relative to their job description. Between the one-time "registration fee" and the amount of rent that we were denied back, we are out about $8,000. We are working with the local Eldercare Agency to see what else can be done to warn people about Maiden Park. We are also posting this review everywhere we can. My husband moved to another facility just two minutes down the road from Maiden Park and the difference is astounding. The staff, the care and the atmosphere is 100% better. I know that most of the reviews here are glowing, but in the few days my husband was there we saw a totally different picture.

When my mom and I toured The Maplewood the social worker explained that they didn't have outside Hospice agencies come in because they (The Maplewood) provided palliative care and handled end of life care for their residence "We have have a palliative team, doctors, nurses...they take care of everything. " Great we thought! Mom moved in. 4 months later my mom was hospitalized and diagnosed with inoperable cancer. She returned to The Maplewood and we clarified with the social worker and staff- would mom need a hospice nurse? NO. Would she have to move rooms when she got close to dying?NO. "We provide palliative care. That's what we do." They reassured my frightened mom that - "You have a palliative team caring for you. We will make sure you're comfortable." 4/6 I get a call from the day nurse, mom who is battling her second bout of pneumonia in 4 weeks is "having a down day. and by the way she is too weak to hold the phone, but she'd like to talk to you, by the way she is confused and she won't take her pills and her antibiotics aren't working and her pneumonia is worse..." My mom decided in January to be a DNR, and she didn't want to go back to the hospital. I told the nurse I was coming (a 7 hour drive) she said good. It's Friday, my mom is dying I think as I drive. When I arrive at midnight my mom is breathing 35times a minute sounding like a washing machine. Her eyes are rolling in their sockets as she involuntarily opens and closes them. I ask her how she is doing and she says "I ache all over". The night nurse enters the room, I tell her my mom's airway needs suctioned and mom needs pain meds. The nurse says to me (a 25 year ICU RN) "Your mom doesn't need to be suctioned and she can't have any pain meds." I said my mom is dying what do you mean she can't have pain meds? I'll stop right here. It only gets worse. The fact is the day nurse, the evening nurse and the social worker all knew my mom had taken a turn and not a one of them thought to tell the doctor or pa. A doctor or pa could have assessed the situation and recognized she was in multisystem organ failure and dying. They then could have modified her care plan and added medications that would maximize comfort. The nurses and social worker with their educational backgrounds should have done something to make sure her palliative needs would be met! It was Friday, they went home. The Maplewood promised my mom comfort care in the end. Her first appropriate end of life pain med was finally was obtained at 0540. She suffered until God finally took her at 0645. No end of life medications were ordered until 530am despite the day nurse and social worker knowing she was declining. How does this happen? They told her over and over that they would take care of her when she was dying! It was her biggest fear. We believed them. We were happy to pay $20,000 out of pocket a month for such inclusive services! Beware!!! They, the staff, smile a lot and sound so reassuring but YOU don't be fooled. If the end is near insist on seeing the care plan. Insist on seeing the med list. Please please educate yourself about end of life care (palliative and hospice). Pain meds, nausea meds, anxiety meds, meds for excessive secretions should all be ordered and a available as needed for a dying DNR patient. These are all meds that maximize comfort. I assumed they took care of this for mom. Friday night at midnight is no time to be begging for comfort care medications. Heaven help the residents who don't have a voice due to dementia, Alzheimer's etc.or don't have an advocate when they are dying. Update:12/14/2018 change is on the way. After extensive investigation, the New York State Department of Health CITED The Maplewood for NOT providing (my mom) adequate Palliative Care. The "last hours" can be as good as the first seven months!

    Sadly we were given incorrect information prior to admissions, on some services they offered. They…read moreclaimed to have front desk service 7 days a week from 8-8pm ( still posted on website), when werkenders leave at 4 or 5. We were told a drink/snack cart went to residents rooms at 7pm daily, that was incorrect. We were told 90% of the Food was "fresh and chef prepared", that is untrue. Mostly frozen, canned, processed food. There are many high ranking employees working there who happen to all be related to each other. You cannot meet with or speak with "Directors" of any department during business hours due to them being in meetings (parties, luncheons and some meetings). Trying to schedule a meeting is impossible due to them always having "meetings." Any concern you have gets a head shake and dismissed. There is no follow up or accountability because they are related. When you send the Executive Director an email and never hear back, to find out ( by my own inquiry) that she passed it on to someone else to work on, no answer, no response, no "I forwarded it to ...., and she is looking into it and will get back to you." We were told the delivery pharmacy delivers 24/7, that's not true. Twice they took 36-48 hours to deliver medication that the resident needed. They forgot to call the lab to have a blood draw for a resident prior to chemo. They also didn't give the chemo patient the prescribed medication the day after chemo, to prevent her from getting sick. The orders from the doctor were written out so a 5 year old could read and understand. Actually they were typed out. Three med techs verified the order AND still never put it in to administer medication. For $5050 a month, they can do much better being a 52 bed facility. And Directors should be accessible at any time, even while at an "employee appreciation lunch" at Bar Louie!
