Staff at the facility were always welcoming and kind. They have a lot of activities going on and the courtyard is nice.

A great place for elderly residents, with good care, and decent prices as well. My dad has…read moreAlzheimers, and needs assistance with cleaning and eating. Compared to other "memory care" locations, the RPH provides great service at a cost of at least $1k/month less than any of the suburban homes do. For those who are more independent, there are lots of things offered, all at a better price than most of the competition. I've seen reviews at other places which refer to the neighborhood as being "sketchy". Well, the neighborhood is mostly black, so I guess if you're so racist, maybe you should go to one of the suburban home (where most of the staff is minority as well). I've never had any issue aside from traffic in the neighborhood, but then I'm not the type to roll up my windows and clutch my pearls just because I'm in a diverse neighborhood. The food is also pretty good, even if it's not usually very exciting. The only thing that I might quibble with is the drivel on the communal TV a lot of the time. With elderly residents, I would think that watching TCM or old reruns of Lawrence Welk would make more sense than those 'manufactured drama' shows on cable. CSI is not a good choice for people with dementia.....

I don't understand why every senior living facility does not use the Eden Alternative Philosophy of caring for elders. What a difference compassion and respect make when caring for those with dementia. Given the high level of quality care, it was an unexpected bonus that RPH actually costs less than other facilities in the area.

There are serious problems with a lack of personnel. Thinking that 50% of the residents seeing a…read moredoctor who is given the ability to practice there isn't undue influence is not correct. Just the accessibility is enough to cause that influence. My mother saw that GP for less than a year and went to the wrong hospital as a result suffering more. Her oncologist was at a different hospital and that "primary" care doctor practicing at St John's does not see patients at Highland. GPs have no real privileges at hospitals anymore so silly to suggest Highland at all. Don't get fooled thinking you are getting the best medical care when you are usually seeing a PA. GP missed a serious lymphoma so no my mom could not go to skilled nursing like a fellow resident of resident screamed at me about. People in independent living at St John's can't get nutritional information about their food. My mother with limited mobility and a precancerous condition of unknown significance for 4 years before moving in didn't need to gain 35 lbs. Now she's dead less than a year of being at St John's. The personnel are very inconsistent and treated a grieving daughter abysmally. There are some good personnel there and I'm grateful for them but from the VP down they certainly don't know how to gain good will. My mom was upset she was at Highland the rare time she could speak coherently, and I had to tell her it wasn't my idea. I had nothing to do with her decision picking St John's that led to the primary doctor with "fake privileges" at Highland.

My father spent the final 2.5 years of his life at St. John's. While we were initially relieved he…read morewas placed here, we soon discovered that the "community-centered" reputation is a facade. St. John's has dropped from a 3-star to a 1-star Medicare rating, and my family's experience confirms why. Critical Medical Neglect & Safety Risks Dietary Hazards: Despite being a stroke survivor with aspiration risks, my father was frequently served non-pureed food and thin liquids with no staff present to assist. This was a direct threat to his life. Medical Emergency Failure: When my father was struggling to breathe with low blood pressure, nurses dismissed it. They failed to notify us when he stopped eating or when a failed IV attempt left him untreated. We had to insist on a hospital transfer; St. John's refused to call 911, opting for a private transport that took 2 hours. He arrived at the hospital septic and passed away two days later. Hygiene & Infestations: The facility is infested with mice. I witnessed multiple mice running through the living area. The dining room was filthy and plagued by fruit flies. Management & Staffing Issues Callous Management: When I brought safety concerns to an upper-level manager, his response was: "You haven't shared anything that I don't already know. If you want to move him, I have lots of people who would like his bed." Neglectful Environment: Aides are frequently on their phones, ignoring residents. My father sometimes wore the same clothes for days. Residents would beg me for help because they knew the staff would not respond. Lack of Activity: Memory care residents are often left sitting in front of a TV or alone in rooms. There are virtually no activities on weekends. The "Two-Tier" Reality Do not be fooled by the beautiful courtyard or the locked "Day Program" rooms. Those resources and the higher level of care seem reserved for the private-pay or rehab floors. In the long-term memory care unit, the environment is one of "waiting to die." Summary: While a few select nurses, chaplains, and security guards are kind, they cannot compensate for a systemic culture of indifference and unsafe conditions. The funeral director noted that since COVID, "no one there seems to care." I would not recommend St. John's to anyone who loves their family member. St. John's: Do better.

Instead of promoting my independence, the lack of sufficient nursing staff caused a lack of autonomy and individuality. Unreasonable wait to be assisted to the bathroom. One time, I waited 3 hours. I waited 6 hours for pain medication because it was "forgotten". Not acceptable. The call button was put out of my reach. Most direct care staff are wonderful and doing the best they can for patients. Meals are simply awful. Not much is made in the kitchen. When the menu said "banana bread", I imagined a fragrant slice. What it turned out to be was a commercially prepared, sealed plastic bag with a greasy piece of something inedible. I self discharged after 4 days. I do not recommend this place. Still have nightmares about it.
