We were in town for vacation and needed something to fill time between our afternoon plans and a late dinner so we popped in. This ended up being one of our favorite stops from our trip! The atmosphere is great, tons of games to choose from, and the people that worked there were so nice and helpful. I had a special seasonal matcha that was delicious and the food looked good too. My friend group ended up buying the game that we played because we enjoyed it so much and we will always be able to think back on our trip to Canada when we play together. First time checking out The Hexagon Board Game Cafe in Cowtown but have been many times to their Edmonton location. It's above Blanco Cantina. We dropped in on a packed Wednesday (4:00pm). Put our name on the waitlist and were called back an hour later. Found $0.75/hour street parking. Staff were friendly but busy. Go up to the front to get water, ask for help on a game, etc. $4.50/hour per person plus each person is required to buy food/beverage. Ginger and chocolate chip cookies ($3.50 each) were nicely warmed up. Good selection of board games to choose from. What an awesome concept. I've been lamenting the fact that there are VERY few places non-alcoholic drinkers can hang out in late at night. This is why when the first Starbucks opened in LA (more specifically, the Valley) back in the early 90s, I was so excited. But this is an even better concept. HEXAGON is a coffee shop. You can come in, order coffee, tea, juices or sodas, and hang out at one of the many tables inside this establishment. They have a good selection of loose leaf tea. And they have a barista to make espresso drinks. It's also a board game shop. They have an extensive library of board games. For $4CAN per hour, you can pick any board game and play with your friends. They also have solo tables for those who want to work or hang by themselves. They also have a small retail section for some of your geeky needs. They also serve wine in case you need it. They also sell snacks by the bowl. Peanut M&Ms? Pretzels? You'll have to be a real party pooper to not have fun in this place. The workers are super friendly and very easy to talk to. The patrons are all here to have fun. There are plenty of parking in the surrounding streets, but in case they're all unavailable, there is a parking structure about 2 blocks away. In case you're wondering, their HOT LATTE is very good. This place is awesome! A great way to kill some time, hang out and try some new board games. Flat rate is $3/hr per person and you have to make some kind of food/beverage purchase. Drinks range from $4~ onwards. They have a good selection of non-alcoholic and alcoholic beverages/cocktails. I personally get the matcha latte every time! This place is quite beautiful. So many boardgames. So came here during the mingle night on Monday and to my surprise its not that popular. So how it works is that you pay a flat rate of $5 and a purchase of a drink. So, I got the chai latte. The Chai latte would be better if there was more spices to it. It was a bit lacking. I guess this place is known for its boardgames. So in terms of selections, its amazing to see how many games they have here. There is definitely something for someone. Also the good part is that the people here can explain how to play most of the game. Its great for people like me who doesn't like to read instructions. There are some food options but not a lot. You make your purchases at the counter and they will bring it to you. The game rate is $3/hr/person and a drink purchase is required. If you do have a large party, a reservation may be a better option to secure a table on a busy night. I was only a party of 2 so we did a walk-in without any issues. A big shout out to the staff! I whole-heartedly appreciated the help of the wonderful staff explaining the board game that we choose. As you pay by the hour, we didn't waste time trying to decipher the game rules ourselves. She was wonderful to check in on us to make sure we were getting the hang of it and great at answering any questions. (Disclaimer: We did pick a more popular game so I can't say that they would know the rules for every game available, but I'm sure they would be happy to help!) I do wish that they could make their selection of food and drinks a little larger. My only qualm is that the prices they charge for snacks are quite excessive. $10 for 2 small bowls of bits and bites when you know a whole bag is $2 is a little painful but, hey, it sure is nice to have some munchies on the side along with your game. read more

Had a nasty experience in this place on the 10th of Sept 2021. Had to choose a star to write my review but they certainly don't deserve any star from me. Went there with my wife and kid, we sat down and ordered coffee for a start but didn't play any games yet. The lady took our order, left and never came back. We stayed there for 40mins and no one attended to us nor did the lady come back with our order. We just relocated to calgary and was just looking for a fun place to hang out. Hexagon is certainly NOT the place for us if this is how they treat customers and especially first timers. I've never been humiliated like this before. I even went to the guy at the bar to complain about the treatment but he never cared to correct it and just watched us leave. Totally unbelievable. I rather stick with Tim horton or starbucks. read more

The staff can suggest some board games according to the number of people and interests. They'll also explain the rules of the games if you can't find them in the box or are too lazy to read them. #161 Why five (5) stars for a coffee shop (as if we don't have a large number of them in Calgary)? As a Yank, I realize Calgarians and probably Canadians really like their coffee but want something different in a coffeehouse. With me? Read on (for originality). So, this friendly new Edmonton-based coffee shop now in Calgary's Kensington neighbourhood that opened Monday, 18 July on the 2nd floor above the Song Han Vietnamese Restaurant which apparently at one point was a Swimco is here to challenge the "coffee shop paradigm". I met the two owners on 24 July briefly; I was curious about the location (since my last visit to Kensington, I did not see this shop). I saw games and coffee and immediately thought Pokémoron or World Of Warcraft but no, not this time. Board games of all kinds; the picture attached only shows about 1/4 of the games they have. There is a huge area behind the main counter (pictured with the beautiful menu on a clear background). The place is nicely lit (at least on sunny days). As it says on the menu, order a drink including coffee, beer*, and wine*, pick a game and it's $2.50 hourly. At first, I was thinking WTF but then it makes sense as it keeps people from buying 1 drink and spending all day in there using resources and the $2.50 allows them to keep the games stocked. *this will be changing as they get more beers and wine selections (has to do with licensing issues). The prices on drinks are inline with Higher Ground and Starbucks, also in the neighbourhood but the difference maker is the gaming area (my Shaw wi-fi also worked in there on my T-mobile branded LG G Pad 8.0 X). I have not seen this concept live before but the owner told me the original location is in Edmonton (hence the Edmonton-based reference in the first sentence) and they already looking to open up additional locations in Calgary! I can say the in the first season of Daria, the coffeehouse episode where the students of Lawndale open a coffeehouse of old (a place for people to read, play games, etc) is surely an inspiration (of course, this was the late 1990's). I did forget to ask about snacks or if, you as a gamer, can have food like pizza or what-not delivered. Hopefully, you can. I will ask on my next trip in here (probably on Tuesday). read more

I absolutely love this place. Sometimes I go here to play games (you pay per person by the hour) - it's great for dates! Often, I'll come to work here and drink coffee just like any other coffee shop. They use Fratello coffee, which is really good, and the snacks are delish. Also, the game library is absolutely amazing. I really feel for the staff having to manage capacity as both a place of "entertainment" and as a "restaurant" during pandemic restrictions, but they've always managed to be available and cheerful and helpful - I'll keep supporting this place that works so hard to be a great citizen in my home neighborhood. read more

Me and my boo were greeted with quick service. There were a wide selection of games, food and snacks. We ordered the Tiramisu and Matcha Latte, tasted good, your average cafe food. Board gamers rejoice!! I had no clue this place existed until my friend hosted a birthday gathering here. The concept is pretty easy: you get a table, start a tab, pay a rate/hour at the end. You can get coffee, drinks and snacks but there's nothing to fill you up. They have an amazing selection of games that can keep you occupied for hours. Boardgame cafes are becoming plentiful around town. Hexagon Cafe has it locked down. Great options for beverages - hot drinks, coffees, teas, lattes and iced drinks. Then a couple of options food wise that are displayed. Oh and some candy/snacky things. You'll seee what I mean when you go. The whole place is very light and airy and no matter where you sit, you can see your game pieces easily. The games is where they really excel. Lots of multi player games, but a lot of single and 2-player games too. Great mix of genres of games. Staff is on hand to help you make decisions and give you a quick lesson in the rules. That helps to get you started faster. If at any stage you need a hand, there is someone to help you out. We went in for 1.5hrs of play and left 3hrs later - only because we had other plans. Had a blast , got to try 2 new games and didn't leave having spent my life savings. Well nearly. They do sell a bunch of the games they have and of course we bought 2. The Hexagon has finally opened! Went to the Edmonton location on Whyte ave a while back and it was a lot of fun. I've always wondered why Calgary hadnt jumped on this trend. It seems in the past year we have, but Hexagon is the best of them all. The new location is where the old Swimco store was. They did a huge reno to make a bright new space. My boyfriend and I went on an opening night and the place was packed. It was awesome seeing all kinds of groups there ( parents +kids, older couples, high schoolers) They offer Fratello coffee as well as other drinks and some light snacks. The options were endless as to what you can choose to play, and it looks like there has been space created to add to the already huge choice of games. We chose a seat at the front of the cafe and the staff were kind enough to come around to ask if we needed any help with how to play the game. An hour only cost $2.50, so I can imagine Hex will be a popular spot to hang out. Can't wait to go back. read more

Though, I think the list of games on their website was a bit out of sync with what they actually had on their shelves. There are so many coffee shops in Kensington, but Hexagon is the best new kid on the block, in my opinion. The owners are considerate and attentive and always hard-working behind the bar. We've been to Hexagon a number of times and this is the first time we've had to buy a beverage each to combat an increase in wages. Why not increase the drink price instead of forcing someone to buy a drink that they do not want? Furthermore, the drink I received was in a sticky and dusty rimmed cup. When I took it to the barista with a nose ring and multicolored hair, she told me all the cups were "marked", as if that was an appropriate excuse. She did not apologize. She reluctantly took my drink and poured it into a new cup. Personally, if your wage is getting raised, your service should also reflect and justify this increase. read more

Easily the most accessible cafe + board game place there is. I am a millennial and I have limited experience with board games but my friends and I ended up playing cranium. They serve fratello coffee which is okay because i am fan. Take your friends here if you're bored out of your minds. 2 hours should do it as it was $2.50/hr for gameplay only. read more
