I visited Calgary and have heard great things about the coffee scene so I had to check out a few of…read morethe local cafes. Phil & Sebastian topped my list. The first time I went, there was a trainee barista which was very kind and patient but unfortunately they don't do pour overs anymore - when I pressed them about it, the reason was Covid. I'm not sure what covid has to do with anything since it's a pretty easy thing to keep on the side with low operating cost (I have one at home - total cost about $80) I ended up getting the drip coffee which was quite delicious- they were serving an Ethiopian origin coffee which was bright, fruity, floral but quite acidic. The next day I went back and met another barista who was clearly not interested in being there and was making conversation with another customer about how he hated Calgary and wished he never moved here (apparently from vancouver). While I can understand his sentiment being from Calgary myself and then moving away, it's not really a great way to start the day. The negativity was filling the air. He seemed like a knowledgeable enough guy but I don't think I'll go back if he's there. I ended up getting a bag of the Ethiopian coffee and I'll just make it myself when I get home If you're looking for a place to get a great cup of coffee and go, then definitely check this place out but don't expect to leave feeling energized by the environment. 4/5 bc the coffee and donuts are delicious

Learned about the TooGoodToGo app special they ran today- 12 gourmet bakery items for $13 which my friend and I just happened to be there at the right time to partake! Before this I got a cookie and mocha which both hit all the right points. I'd recommend this quality coffee spot to friends for sure.

I discovered that they roast their own coffee. They mostly sell Costa Rica beans and a few Ethiopian ones. Central and South America beans have been my favorites so I bought a batch to make coffee at home and is my new place to go (I usually get my coffee a roasterie in Kensington). Then, the staff mentioned their weekend sweet potato waffles. So again I came back and they are sooooo good and only 8 dlls? What? This place is amazing. They also have a new outdoor area so you can eat outside in company of your pooch. They also observe precautions for covid.

I visited Baya Rica Cafe about a month ago and then again just yesterday. Every time has been extremely pleasant. The staff are warm and chatty which I love. This cozy cafe is located in a little house right off the main street. The inside is light and welcoming and there's a spacious patio for outdoor sitting (under the right circumstances). When it comes to the coffee... RATING: 8/10 - Baya Rica I ordered an americano (typical) and it definitely hit the spot. The coffee is smooth and the furthest thing from bitter. I prefer a little less water added. The flavour is incredible but I could do a bit stronger. FUN FACT: Baya Rica's beans are grown on a coffee farm in Costa Rica. If you're in the neighbourhood make sure to stop by!

This time around I tried something they offer by reservation called afternoon tea for $40. We each got to pick a tea for our tea pot and had about 8 options. The tea itself wasn't anything special. We tried the chai and the alforno blend which both didn't taste very strong. The afternoon tea deal also came with a snack tower, the bottom consisting of savory sandwich bites, and the top two levels with pastries and sweets. The things that stood out to me were the lemon meringue, fruit tart, and the carrot cake (the cream cheese frosting was really tasty). Overall, this was a super cute and fun thing to try. I'd definitely recommend it if you want to try little bites of various things they carry.

One for now and a ham and brie sandwich for later. Everything was so delicious and fresh. I had the brisket bowl with scrambled eggs. So amazing. I want to replicate this at home but fear it will take some work. The gremalata was superior. The cronut was so light and almost melted in your mouth. The raspberry filled coconut cookie was chewy and light. The breakfast with sausage eggs and potatoes and toast was enough for two. We couldn't begin to eat it all and took some away for later. Love this place. Wish we had one. We received multiple recommendations to try this from locals as well. Lots of seating. Craft coffees. Bakery and savory and food for all hours. This is the spot for you!!
