I stumbled upon this hidden gem when I was visiting a nearby doctor. Went in for a cup of coffee and was pleasantly surprised, it was smooth and fresh. After a couple more visits. I discovered that they roast their own coffee. They mostly sell Costa Rica beans and a few Ethiopian ones. Central and South America beans have been my favorites so I bought a batch to make coffee at home and is my new place to go (I usually get my coffee a roasterie in Kensington). Then, the staff mentioned their weekend sweet potato waffles. So again I came back and they are sooooo good and only 8 dlls? What? This place is amazing. There's nothing like a good cuppa joe to get the day started. I love this little cafe nestled in the heart of Bridgeland. It's cute, homey and boasts a great cup of coffee. I visited Baya Rica Cafe about a month ago and then again just yesterday. Every time has been extremely pleasant. The staff are warm and chatty which I love. This cozy cafe is located in a little house right off the main street. The inside is light and welcoming and there's a spacious patio for outdoor sitting (under the right circumstances). When it comes to the coffee... RATING: 8/10 - Baya Rica I ordered an americano (typical) and it definitely hit the spot. The coffee is smooth and the furthest thing from bitter. I prefer a little less water added. The flavour is incredible but I could do a bit stronger. FUN FACT: Baya Rica's beans are grown on a coffee farm in Costa Rica. New little cafe in Bridgeland! It's in a little yellow house just up the street from 1st Ave NE on 7A St. It's serving up your usual lattes, americanos, cappuccinos and the likes with a frew snacks to go along with it. It's still relatively new, so the selection is still relatively limited. When I arrived last week, I was right on time for some empanadas fresh from the oven. There's some bar style seating over by the window to sit with your laptop, a high table or some lower tables and chairs against the wall. There's also a room further back beside the kitchen. Charming location, great for people watching, wonderful owner with a passion for coffee, Central American snacks, and....DECADENT coffee. You don't want to ruin it with cream or sugar! I just discovered this place and I came back the next day for more. Highly recommend it. Getting coffee here was such a neat and home-y experience. Walking into the yellow house there was a wife/husband/child combo (not sure if they're actually a family or if I'm incorrectly assuming conventional human dynamics) in front of the cafe's bad ass roaster in the centre of the room. I got an americano and coconut pastry and enjoyed them on the picnic tables just outside of the cafe. The americano was good, not the best I've ever had but good. The pastry was probably the highlight of my morning, it was sweet, soft and fragrant. Will definitely be going back. read more

Baya Rica is my top pick for coffee in the area. I love the warm feel to this little, old house and its creaky wooden floor. They roast their own beans in house in a really classy looking bright red roaster that you can easily see and definitely smell the second you step through the door. The take home coffee is pretty tasty and a pretty decent price if I remember correctly. It wasn't cheap by any means, but hey, we're talking about roasted in-house that day kind of stuff! read more

I love this beautiful coffee house, friendly, wifi connected...they do get busy and for a great cup you sometimes have to wait. Patience is necessary as this is not a Starbucks assembly line here. Everything I come here the food it delicious and the drinks are fab. I'm not a huge coffee or latte person but wow the lattes here are amazing. The employees there are friendly and the interior is cozy and cheery. My only complaint is that it takes a long time to get drinks or food. Having said that, I do think that the extra time taken makes for tastier things. If you are in a big hurry this won't be the best pick for you. read more

I've been into this cafe a few times and have always been impressed with the quality of coffee and the friendliness of the staff. Because it's a new business and not super busy, there's usually only one person working, and they seem to be responsible for taking orders, preparing all drinks, preparing all food, and keeping the cafe tidy. This means when it gets busy the service is a bit slow, but it's understandable and certainly not the barista's fault! Perhaps the best sign of this cafe is the number of regulars who not only rave about the coffee, but seem to have a rapport with the baristas. The baristas seem to make an effort to learn customers' names, and most importantly, regular drinks. Do yourself a favour and check this place out! read more

Service takes too long. We went there on Sunday and there was only a couple in front of us, they already had ordered their breakfast and were waiting for it. We ordered the same thing without knowing. I had a breakfast sandwich which had avocado. First of all everything took so long about 20-25 minutes for just 4 customers and the first couple had their breakfast server 20 minutes before us, when our breakfast arrived the avocado on my sandwich was black and when we told the server she said she doesn't buy the ingredients, really? Disappointing. A nice concept, cute house, roast on premises, etc. all looked promising. But the poor service received today? There are far, far too many good coffee shops in Calgary to justify going back! We ordered a latte and a cappuccino---to stay, for $8.50. The woman at the register took our money and then went to the espresso machine. Waited a while, and a latte was produced for someone else. Then a second latte was produced in a paper cup and the woman said "that's for you." Fine, I took it outside to my wife and then went back in to wait on my cappuccino. Another latte was produced, then a 2nd one. After several more orders were produced, some in ceramic cups (and my wife was no doubt wondering what had happened to me), I went up and asked about my cappuccino. The response was, "Oh, it's here," and she produced a paper cup with a drink (same size as a latte cup) that had obviously been sitting for a while (and never announced, and was not in a ceramic cup to stay. I then asked if they didn't put drinks in cups to stay and the response was, "Oh, I forgot to ask." I then replied, no you didn't forget, but I asked for both drinks to stay; and I never thought that this orphaned drink in a paper cup was mine! The woman then offered to make me another one but by this time I was sure that my wife had long finished her latte (true), so I took my lukewarm cappuccino and joined her outside. So...nice experience? Definitely NOT. Go into Starbucks, Good Earth, Phil & Sebastian's, Luke's, or any number of coffee houses anywhere and the barista makes sure that the person ordering the coffee receives it. It is inexcusable to let it sit for 10 or 15 minutes without at least announcing it again---or, much better, if you don't get a customer's name (like Phil & Sebastian's), recognizing the customer who ordered it and making sure they pick up the order. It is not that there were mobs of people there, either, where one might excuse a lapse. And how was the coffee (aside from being lukewarm)? More like a latte than cappuccino, which is understandable (not forgivable) given the rather large paper cup it was delivered in. Bottom line---walk a few blocks up and get an excellent cappuccino at Luke's on First Avenue. Definitely not a cutesy house, and the seating is limited, but some of the best espresso and cappuccino anywhere. And the barista's, despite working the register and serving up coffees and pastries, always recognize who ordered and make sure they are drinking their brew while it is hot! read more
