Hot mayan cocoa ($4.50) and chai tea latte ($4.25)
    Jonny M.

My friend K is obsessed with hot chocolate. Obsessed and picky. She stumbled upon a best place to grab a hot chocolate list (there's even an annual Calgary Hot Chocolate Festival in February that looks worthy of checking out) and Cornerstone's mayan cocoa made the cut as the best. So obviously, we had to check it out. We came on a slightly dreary Saturday afternoon, excited to warm up and try out their drinks. The place is quaint and has a nostalgic vibe, bringing me back to my piano lesson days. Cool that there's a couple rooms in the back to take piano and drum lessons! They even have a cool little arcade game and some terrible board game to entertain you while you wait (Monopoly, backgammon, etc.).The cafe itself is small with only a couple tables (maybe for 20 people) and has both drinks and food on the menu. The food itself didn't look that appealing (they had some out on display but I've read some reviews saying it's good) but we were only there to try out their drinks. The selection is small wit a couple types of coffee, chai latte and hot cocoa. - Hot mayan cocoa ($4.50) and chai tea latte ($4.25) - K ordered the hot mayan cocoa as she's been obessing over this type of drink ever since I ordered it in Vancouver at Schokolade Cafe. Life changing apparently. Cornerstone version is cocoa so if you're a hot chocolate purist, this may not live up to your standards. She ended up having to order a 12 oz (options of 8 oz, 12 oz or 16 oz ) as the barista only had enough mixture left to make that amount. In a nutshell, it was okay but we were expecting/hoping for more given that they had one the best hot chocolate award in 2014. To be different, I decided to try out their chai tea latte, which I believe they siphoned. It smelled great but taste wise, it didn't taste anything like a chai latte. I kept on drinking hoping the flavour would blend together but nada. At least the cups were cute? Cool that they have live music on Friday evenings (7pm) and Saturday afternoons (3:30pm). Check out their website if you're planning to stop by for music as it's not every week. Wish there had been some music playing while we were there but guess Halloween isn't the best day to go! I like the concept but their drinks definitely need improvement for me to want to come back again.

Cornerstone's entry for the 2018 YYC Hot Chocolate Festival. It is called the Mexi-Cocoa. I really enjoyed this dark and spicy treat, mmm.

The drink I ordered (the Mexi-Cocoa, Cornerstone's entry for the 2018 YYC Hot Chocolate Festival) was delicious, I was not disappointed and will probably go out of my way to get back here to have another one before the month is out. And the person who served me was really nice, which is such a pleasant thing when you are paying for something, to be treated in a friendly manner.

Loving the vibe here. Live music, local ingredients, everything is made from scratch and it's got a great atmosphere.

Freshly ground cappuccino. I wish I could buy one of these mugs!

I ordered the Matcha Lemonade, which had a mixture of lemonade soda and a matcha flavor to it for $7.50. Given the price and the small portion cup, I felt like it was a bit underwhelming at best given the price, and I don't feel like I got my money's worth. However, given the experience, I would reccomend this coffee shop to tourists in the area! Just not great for the price.

The staff were nice and warm. Offered fresh brewed coffee and even brought it to my table one time. It's easy to ask questions when you know you have a friendly staff in front of you and interaction was pleasant. I ordered a Cinnamon bun and the guy offered to heat it up. Went well with my regular black coffee. On a different instance they even brought me another coffee from a fresh batch when they realized the one I just ordered was from an older one. That was really nice. I just realized it's nice to come here in the mornings as well. The walls are all glass so it lets a lot of ambient light from the outside in. It's refreshing to have sunlight on your face while having breakfast or when reading. I tried the bacon and egg sandwich and I know it was fresh because the egg yoke oozed out when I took a bite. I was pleasantly surprised. The bread tasted and smelled good. The bacon crisp. The veggie fresh and green. There's a lot more pastry options during the day. I posted it here. I love sitting on the full sized sofa when I'm lazy and just want to read a book. The ambient music is just right, not too loud, so friends can have a relaxed conversation without the music drowning their voices. It can be busy during late Saturday mornings so come early if you want to find a table and not planning to take your coffee to go. This is located in the nice Mahogany condos. There's plenty of free street parking. When you step out there's plenty of other shops to explore. They have the Marble Slab Creamery. Of course the Chairman's Steakhouse. There's a high end wine store, a bar, etc. Plenty of other service oriented shops and more. In the summer it's great because the Mahogany Beach Club is next door. Yes there's a beach and sand, in the middle of the neighbourhood. Awesome! A paved running trail is conveniently located around the beach. When the water is frozen I've seen people ice skating and playing hockey on the ice. It's in a really nice area and enjoyable!

I recently went there with a couple of friends, and I'm inclined to say that it could become one of my new favorite restaurants in Calgary. They have a seasonal menu, which makes the thought of coming back each time pretty exciting. When we went the first time, we tried the Korean fried chicken sandwich, the daily special - honey kimchi burger, and the halloumi sandwich. All were excellent! The desserts were also amazing, the panna cotta was frozen, which they explained, but I wasn't mad about it. At first, it felt a little strange to be eating inside a gym, but I actually liked seeing all the action. It was also really decent prices for the quality of food! Like I mention before, it's a weird place to a cafe and because of this I don't think too many people know about this restaurant. They definitely need some type of sign because there is zero outside. They are only attracting the climbing patrons and they need to do a better job advertise to bring in other members of the public. I only heard about this place thanks to the YYC Facebook Foodie group. Otherwise I wouldn't have known about this place. There isn't too many breakfast cafes in this area so I think it would attract more customers if they advertise themselves more.

Sadly, this joyous occasion was ruined by a very rude manager, and a very terrible tasting vanilla latte made with a different type of coconut milk than her usual. She noticed the latte tasted off. I took a sip and verified that the latte tasted sour, bitter and completely undrinkable. We told the barista and asked if we can get the latte remade. Sadly, we were told that we would have to pay for a second latte. Confused? We were too. Why wouldn't she just remake the drink? The barista called her manager over to speak to us. The manager proceeded to double down on wanting her to pay for another latte. She then proceeded to be condescending and talk down at us. Unwilling to listen to a word that we said, jumping on every opportunity to either talk over us, or try to finish our sentence. She then tries to gaslight us into believing that texture and flavor are the same thing. She kept telling us that the reason the latte tastes different is because it was made with a creamier coconut milk. I then had to fight to be able to finish my sentence to explain to her that texture and flavor were two different elements, and that the drink tastes rotten. She then proceeded to try to save face by saying that it is their most popular latte, and they've made many that day so therefore there's no way that the latte tastes bad. Not considering the possibility of contamination to why the coffee tastes undrinkable. Any other coffee shop or food and beverage establishment that understands the value of good customer service and customer retention would have had no problem replacing her drink. We then asked for a refund... wow, they must be so hard up for cash that they can't bear to spare another 8 ounces of coconut milk to fix their mistake. The manager reluctantly agreed to make a new latte but it was accompanied by a hero complex lecture-like explanation of how they normally wouldn't do that. ** As in if they make your coffee wrong, too bad for you, you need to pay for a second one to be made**. She was being cold, rude, condescending. At a time of racial fatigue in our society, I do my best not to jump to the conclusions of prejudice. However, this woman left us no choice but to believe that being visible minorities was a factor in how she would treat us, Why else would remaking a drink be such a big deal? If I were you, I'd skip this place and their mediocre coffee's and go to an establishment that values each and every customer, and doesn't leave them feeling uneasy and upset when they leave their store. If you do happen to visit this place, keep an eye out for the sub-par manager. If you're having a good day, she'll make sure to ruin that for you. ***After writing this the owner/business manager, replied to my Google review. Essentially, he is trying to paint me as a villain to discredit me and deny that we may have sensed an undertone of prejudice from the manger. Rather than easing our concerns, and addressing the fact that his coffee shop refused to remake my friends drink that didn't taste right, he instead tried to make it seem as though I was screaming at his staff and causing a scene. I did not do anything of the sort. I am a human being that was defending her friend, and became upset when the manager was not taking the time to listen to what we had to say, talking over us any time we tried to express our concern. He mentioned that I apparently was rude and disrespectful to his staff, and that I went outside and swore in the parking lot. Not sure how that equates to me being abusive to his staff. If I was so awful to his staff, wouldn't they just ask me to leave. They didn't, so how can that be true? And why would it matter what I say to my friend about the experience in the parking lot. (outside of the coffee shop). As you can clearly see, he's really working hard to try to flip everything onto my Friend and I. As if we were being unreasonable, when they were being unreasonable by trying to charge my for a 2nd cup of coffee when they screwed up the first one.
