Otherwise, the food has become close to inedible, and certainly not healthy. We try to supplement it with things we cook ourselves in our microwave, but it's hard and expensive as we have to send our private home health aide out to shop for us. The other ongoing problem is that the building continues to be overrun with mice, and the control efforts are half-hearted, at best. And no thought was given to the residents feeling about such a big change. Lack of experience of the new administrator has made living there more difficult, and reflects a less caring and empathetic view of how elderly women should be treated. The staff, by-in-large, are very kind and caring people. It's really sad that the Mission of Girdler House is "driven by compassion", yet actions do speak louder than the written word. The staff helped me stay involved in her progress meetings and they were always welcoming and helpful when I would come up from Virginia to visit. She was fortunate enough to stay at Oceanview for 9 years and I was blessed to know she was safe and in good hands. If I lived in Massachusetts, this would be a place I'd be checking out in the not too distant future! I absolutely love the view from the top floor.

Dementia pt roaming into moms room 2-3x scaring all of us, no one seemed to care about this woman. CNA sitting in hallway w/ headphones in. Left my mom overnite. Got a call from her at 2AM scared crying. We tried to call back. The # on sticker that was on her room phone was wrong! Called and woke up an elderly man who told us to get her the hell out of there. Finally got her stayed on phone w/ her. Had soiled diaper, was 25 mins before staff came in to help her. No shower in the BR. How this place is running as a medical facility is beyond me. STAY AWAY!!!

Told them what medication I am on, they decide to change my medication. causing a second panic attack since arrival. Have to ask what medication you are being given and how much. Arrived here on 11/27/24 now 11/30/24 at 4am. Have had two panic attacks. Staff response time to incidents are poor if at all. I had to get help for my roommate when he was having problems in the bathroom. They make you feel like I have to be here even though I can take care of myself just fine. Had to call 911 to get a response from staff. Because of the holiday and long weekend, I can't get anything done to my liking. have to call on friends to have things taken care of. I feel like i'm in prison with no say in my care. Because of the long weekend they can not do anything for me. everything need to go through the so called channels, except all the channels are off for the long weekend. My next step now is trying to get discharged from this place.. I feel so sorry for all of the other residents / patients here that can not speak up for themselves. 11/30/24 -8:am shift change Saturday morning waiting for my morning meds wish me luck. I will say one thing at least the day shift staff attitudes are much better than the overnight staff. Their attitudes suck at best!. One thing that I cannot say enough about is the activities department! If not for them I would have taken my mom out, they kept my mom busy and entertainment for the last six months of her life. Jacinda the director should open her own business! I have so many items that my mother made that are beautiful and I will cherish them forever. Let me get to the negative about this company. The management is truly awful, I won't go into too many specifics but I know that karma will have her way with these folks. I will start with the family is supposed to get together with a manager and get a 30 and 60 day review of how their loved one is doing, Jack the manager had to change the date, ok fine but when I went in on the date he changed it to he started yelling at me (the customer paying 9k a month) saying he was too busy! There is a nurse case manager who oversees the nursing staff, unbeknownst to me I don't even think she's an RN, that I caught in a bunch of lies about my mother falling, which ultimately resulted in her death. I had asked to see the video to see my moms fall and was given the runaround how Jack couldn't find it on the film (what??? Why do you have cameras then?) my mom was in hospice care and did not have a long outlook but this definitely rushed her process along. I could go into many more stories, something that really left a bad taste in my mouth? They sent me a bill after my mom had passed away, keep in mind, this is a 50 bed facility, not a huge corporation! My mom had been gone over five weeks now, I'm still awaiting the refund I was promised three weeks ago, the management doesn't care about their clients whatsoever, it's all about the money, thank goodness for Lorna, Denise and Jacinda!

Then we've had some gems take care of my aunt. Thankfully there are some good and caring clinicians. Transparency is not a strong point for BBV. Neither is coordination. My aunt had moved to different areas for different levels of care and each time it feels rushed, pressured and doomed to a horrible transition. For the cost, you would hope that BBV would have moving coordinators that are helpful but nope. I would not recommend this place. It's pretty, and like I said, some beautiful people here and there but the admin is horrible to deal with by and large.

I had asked my brother-in-law if he would like me to be his advocate. He thought that would be great and appreciated my suggestion. I live on the West Coast and of course Brooksby is on the East Coast. I knew that because of HEPA laws staff are not supposed to talk to family members without written permission or consent form. I called their case manager and my brother-in-law's nurse over 15 times in one week and left voice messages. NO ONE CALLED ME BACK! When I finally reached someone in the administration office, I explained the situation and asked if she would please call me back either way to let me know what's going on. I STILL have not heard from anyone. Although I live 3000 miles away, I am the closest relative that still has cognitive abilities. All three of my younger sisters have Alzheimer's. I was hospitalized with shortness of breath which doctors thought I had a heart attack on top of a bad case of bronchitis. The cardiologist performed a cardiac catheterization and told me that my heart was "great." He asked if I had been under stress and diagnosed me with broken heart syndrome due to the stress I had caused by the total lack of communication between Brooksby regarding my family members and myself. NO ONE YET HAS CALLED ME BACK! It's been about 4-6 weeks. My family pay an exorbitant amount of money and Brooksby cannot return a phone call? Family care is good healthcare. I would not recommend Brooksby to anyone considering putting themselves or a loved one in that facility.

I believe this is because they want to make their residents feel as happy and nostalgic as possible. They realize the psychological and emotional value of giving them connection with their past, and particularly for stimulating responsiveness for the memory care patients through the music and humor of their time. They realize it is crucial for their adjustment and peace of mind. Brookdale, then in my mind is an unusually humane outfit wherein they subsidize such programming beyond the extra mile unlike many assisted living communities who do so much less for the spiritual and emotional needs of their clients. -Steve Hershman
