The handling of the transition from the 30 year administrator to the new administrator wasn't, in fact, a transition. There was no overlap. And no thought was given to the residents feeling about such a big change. Lack of experience of the new administrator has made living there more difficult, and reflects a less caring and empathetic view of how elderly women should be treated. The staff, by-in-large, are very kind and caring people. It's really sad that the Mission of Girdler House is "driven by compassion", yet actions do speak louder than the written word. I would not recommend this facility.

It has all the warmth of living at home yet more upscale. It will provide her with some pampering and some supervision. For me, it will take the worry I have had for her safety. The staff helped me stay involved in her progress meetings and they were always welcoming and helpful when I would come up from Virginia to visit. She was fortunate enough to stay at Oceanview for 9 years and I was blessed to know she was safe and in good hands. If I lived in Massachusetts, this would be a place I'd be checking out in the not too distant future! I absolutely love the view from the top floor.

I said get the blank blank out of here now at first he did not leave I told him again to get the blank out of here, I started to get out of my bed to scream so he turned around and he walked out. I went out in the hallway and I saw four men and a woman and they asked me what i was doing , one man has glasses. The man that came into my room was about 5 10 or a little taller I remember his arms look like he had worked out in gyms short jersey black on. I pointed to the man that came into my room and I told them he just walked in and he told me he was there to change my diaper that it must be wet and I told him first of all I don't wear diapers and he said I have to check. I said get the blank blank out of here now. Then the woman said something and then the man turned to her and said I knocked on the door and I said no you didn't. You just walked in and he said I knocked at her door. I said no you didn't. You were standing over me . I was told that they were AIDS/ not nurses so in case there was an emergency I don't know where they would find a DOCTOR . They had no identification there was a tall man with glasses wall in black the woman I think her hair was a reddish/brown and she was very overweight and she had a tough mannerism. You could tell she didn't like to be questioned . they said they patrol the hallways at night so why are they patrolling my room to see if I have a diaper on after the incident with me and I put chairs against the door because if I had been younger, I would've gone out and confronted them to be honest with you, but I heard another woman crying and my heart broke for her so I didn't know what was happening to her. I definitely would not recommend this place to anyone if you put your parents during the day the nursing staff are fabulous There is one aid I do want to mention and I forget her first name, but she's from Morocco, she took me down to get a shower every day she made my bed. PT everyone they're really kind but at night it was a nightmare I should say. DO NOT GO THERE. PLEASE I just left there a few days ago GOOD LUCK

Let me start at the beginning. We looked at this location for my mom because she needed more care than we were able to give her at home anymore, it all seemed like a great fit, the woman that gave us the tour was wonderful and kind, unfortunately she hit ill and they let her go. One thing that I cannot say enough about is the activities department! If not for them I would have taken my mom out, they kept my mom busy and entertainment for the last six months of her life. Jacinda the director should open her own business! I have so many items that my mother made that are beautiful and I will cherish them forever. Let me get to the negative about this company. The management is truly awful, I won't go into too many specifics but I know that karma will have her way with these folks. I will start with the family is supposed to get together with a manager and get a 30 and 60 day review of how their loved one is doing, Jack the manager had to change the date, ok fine but when I went in on the date he changed it to he started yelling at me (the customer paying 9k a month) saying he was too busy! There is a nurse case manager who oversees the nursing staff, unbeknownst to me I don't even think she's an RN, that I caught in a bunch of lies about my mother falling, which ultimately resulted in her death. I had asked to see the video to see my moms fall and was given the runaround how Jack couldn't find it on the film (what??? Why do you have cameras then?) my mom was in hospice care and did not have a long outlook but this definitely rushed her process along. I could go into many more stories, something that really left a bad taste in my mouth? They sent me a bill after my mom had passed away, keep in mind, this is a 50 bed facility, not a huge corporation! My mom had been gone over five weeks now, I'm still awaiting the refund I was promised three weeks ago, the management doesn't care about their clients whatsoever, it's all about the money, thank goodness for Lorna, Denise and Jacinda!

The administration continue to leave me unimpressed and often times, angry and disappointed. The front line staff is a mixed bag. We've had the mediocre and the bad. Then we've had some gems take care of my aunt. I would say that if not for the people on the front line that are there because they are in elderly care for the right reasons, the place would be completely miserable. Thankfully there are some good and caring clinicians. Transparency is not a strong point for BBV. Neither is coordination. My aunt had moved to different areas for different levels of care and each time it feels rushed, pressured and doomed to a horrible transition. For the cost, you would hope that BBV would have moving coordinators that are helpful but nope. I would not recommend this place. It's pretty, and like I said, some beautiful people here and there but the admin is horrible to deal with by and large.

I had asked my brother-in-law if he would like me to be his advocate. He thought that would be great and appreciated my suggestion. I live on the West Coast and of course Brooksby is on the East Coast. I knew that because of HEPA laws staff are not supposed to talk to family members without written permission or consent form. I called their case manager and my brother-in-law's nurse over 15 times in one week and left voice messages. NO ONE CALLED ME BACK! When I finally reached someone in the administration office, I explained the situation and asked if she would please call me back either way to let me know what's going on. I STILL have not heard from anyone. Although I live 3000 miles away, I am the closest relative that still has cognitive abilities. All three of my younger sisters have Alzheimer's. I was hospitalized with shortness of breath which doctors thought I had a heart attack on top of a bad case of bronchitis. The cardiologist performed a cardiac catheterization and told me that my heart was "great." He asked if I had been under stress and diagnosed me with broken heart syndrome due to the stress I had caused by the total lack of communication between Brooksby regarding my family members and myself. NO ONE YET HAS CALLED ME BACK! It's been about 4-6 weeks. My family pay an exorbitant amount of money and Brooksby cannot return a phone call? Family care is good healthcare. I would not recommend Brooksby to anyone considering putting themselves or a loved one in that facility.

Even if honestly I admit my interests are vested, I will say however, that as an entertainer, in my life experience as a performer in venues such as this, I have never in my 50 or so professional years, had ever been so respected to have been given even 5 engagements in a year much less the 20+ dates that Brookdale assigned me in 2015. I believe this is because they want to make their residents feel as happy and nostalgic as possible. They realize the psychological and emotional value of giving them connection with their past, and particularly for stimulating responsiveness for the memory care patients through the music and humor of their time. They realize it is crucial for their adjustment and peace of mind. Brookdale, then in my mind is an unusually humane outfit wherein they subsidize such programming beyond the extra mile unlike many assisted living communities who do so much less for the spiritual and emotional needs of their clients. -Steve Hershman
