Every time we head to Helen for tubing, this is always one of our stops and it honestly never disappoints. I pretty much order the same thing every visit because I love it that much, the HÜHNERSCHNITZEL with potato salad and red cabbage, and to start we always get the giant pretzel with beer cheese. It just hits after being out in the sun all day. The schnitzel is always flavorful and comforting, and that pretzel with beer cheese is one of those appetizers that disappears fast. The restaurant itself is also really cute. You can sit inside or out on the balcony which is such a nice spot to eat and people watch. Service has always been good every time we've gone too. Overall, if you're spending the day in Helen, I definitely think this place is worth stopping at. read more

Fantastic location, sadly the food is only soso. The first issue is that there are only the massive dinner portions unless you want a sandwich. If you and a friend are in the mood for the same thing then share a meal for sure. It would be nice if they had a lunch portion available. I ended up with a schnitzel sandwich which is basically just a friend chicken sandwich. It was fine for what it was. My friend got a Bauernwutsteller and it was not good. We had to send it back. One of the few full German restaurants in Helen as you visit the lovely cute little town. Wanted to experience the full German experience and believe we got some. Located more on the northern end of the strip, The Heidelberg sits on a corner of the market with Oktoberfest in full effect outside and inside as this area is the most active and busiest section of the street. The restaurant has several levels you can be seated and has a stage on the top floor with live entertainment. Service was a bit slow for some unknown reason, but not overly horrible. The menu offers authentic German cuisine with many options for food and drinks. Food was good but not great as it was not memorable as expected. Lacking some flavors but the portions were fairly large. Overall, if you're looking for a nice experience for simple basic dining and entertainment, this is the spot! read more

Passing by Helen town this weekend and had to try some authentic German food. Not sure about authentic as I am not experienced in German cousine. I tried the reuben sandwich and was good. Had fries and a pickle with it. Fries were thick cut and not seasoned. I enjoyed my cold beer in their glass mug which you can buy for $45 and of course I only had the beer and did not buy the mug. Nothing special about it but I am sure comes in handy for Oktoberfest festivities at Helen Town. Carry your own mug around. My favorite part of the meal was the sausage with sauerkraut very good and really enjoyed it. Great food! The pretzel is a MUST! The chicken cordon bleu tasted homemade and the portions were generous! If we came back to the area this is where we would dine again! Our waitress was friendly efficient and really understanding of young children anticipating exactly what we needed before we knew we needed it! Such a joy to have her as a waitress. Arrived just after opening and we were seated immediately near a window. The menu is large with many variations on German sausage and other dishes. I had the schnitzel sandwich with French fries. The sandwich was served on rye bread with lettuce and tomato slice. It was as excellent as. The fried were limp and needed seasoning. I should have substituted something else. Not busy in Helen, got seated right away. Food came out pretty quickly. I did not like their caeser salad. There are no vegetarian/vegan options. There are no fish/seafood entrees. Got smoked salmon appetizer - just ok. The pretzel was good, but did not like beer cheese dip. Hubby said his reuben was fine. I have been to quite a few German restaurants, not only because I enjoy German food, but because my partner is of German heritage. So, after trying German food in several states, I would say that The Heidelberg is the most authentic, tasty, and affordable of many places I have visited. I first started this review with a 4 star rating but I am upping it to a 5 because... 1) they make their own spaetzle, 2) they make their own pretzels, 3) they serve goulash, and 4) everything is just like it is in Germany (if you have been there). This place is one of the few authentic old school places that will not disappoint you. With this said, I must also disclose that this restaurant would be a 3 1/2 in the Fatherland, but here in the American continent, and with all the fake German franchises, this is a true example to follow. I truly enjoyed my meal, the staff was very friendly and shared a lot of information with us, and yes, the music was a bit too much, but it is a touristy place so... it is what it is. read more

The sausage was perfectly grilled and tasty, and I ate a bit too much but survived. The dining rooms are in a converted house and nicely decorated with interesting items. The queueing on the staircase caused a bit of confusion and could be an issue if you have trouble standing. I do think they have a wheelchair-accessible route but it's not obvious. read more

After spending my morning in the Chattahoochee River tubing, my friend and I decided to come here to grab something to eat. When we first arrived we told them we had a party of 2. They didn't have a host taking names, phone numbers, party sizes, or anything. They just told everyone to wait in the stairwell. We all just had to go off the honor system and remember who was waiting in front of us which I felt to be disorganized. My friend and I shared a pretzel to start. It was good, warm, and I enjoyed the butter and and cheese to dip it in. I got the Reuben which I liked I just wish it had a side of thousand island dressing. I asked my server for it but she forgot. We decided we had to try one of the many marginally scored German restaurants while in Helen. Finally selected The Heidelberg and we are so glad we did! They seated us quickly and served us equally as fast! We started with a soft pretzel. It was perfectly warm and soft on the inside. Well, but not overly, salted. Served with a warm ramekin of melted butter as well as a warm ramekin of cheese sauce. Both were delicious options. Additionally, they have 3 mustard options on the table. Perfect start! We then decided to split the Jaegerschnitzel with German potato salad and spatzel. Coincidentally, I specifically wanted spatzel then preferred every other thing we ate to that. It wasn't bad. Separate exit from the entrance. The entrance has stairs that lead to the second floor, but the exit is a ramp. I wonder if they would have allowed the stroller to come in through the exit side inside the restaurant, so that would be good to find out if you were planning to bring a stroller. The free parking is about 0.12 miles walking distance at the Unicoi Hill Park, when you cut through the park. It's a pretty steep hill from the park's parking lot. Came in early March, and there was no one sitting inside the restaurant. Only one small party was sitting outside on the balcony with covered umbrellas. There is a nice view of the pretty shops from the balcony, but the seating benches were wet from the rain. We enjoyed listening to the upbeat German music during our meal. The volume of the music was fine, not too loud. We shared the Riesenbrezel (pretzel) and Jägerschnitzel and I'm glad I did since they both were enough for two people. Ordered beer cheese dip with the pretzel for a $3 upcharge. The pretzel automatically comes with melted herb butter. The pretzel was good, soft. The coarse salt could've been better evenly distributed though. The cheese dip was okay-I could've done without it and just stuck with the butter. I couldn't taste the beer in the cheese dip and it just didn't really have the greatest flavor. The Jägerschnitzel was okay. Options were grilled or breaded and fried, we did the breaded and fried. Wasn't too impressed with the mushroom cream sauce flavor. I liked the mushroom gravy at Muller's Famous Fried Cheese Cafe better. The entrée comes with your choice of two sides. We opted for the sauerkraut and the potato salad. The sauerkraut was very tangy and had bacon bits in it, was okay. Potato salad was okay. They do warn you with a sign at the entrance about a processing fee if you use credit card. The waiter also told us about it too. Our waiter was very nice throughout our visit. They have high chairs and a baby changing table in the bathroom. There's also a separate bathroom for family, which I did not check out. read more

Out of possible options in the central part of the tourist areas this is not a bad option for German food. However, a couple things to keep in mind and consider- food is a bit pricier than some in the area and portions & quality don't match the price; there is an additional charge for using cards, when in this day and time almost everyone (tourists especially) only uses cards. ( it was like $6, extra on top of your bill) - the music was very loud and some songs sounded as if they were on repeat ( we felt so sorry for the staff) we got to leave, but they are there all day. Super sad, honestly the whole experience was just ok. With as many tourists as this town gets I was really hoping this would be awesome, but it's just not. Slipping into town a bit late limited my options, but I knew I wanted German food for dinner, and the Heidelberg was indeed still open. As many others have mentioned, the restaurant section is upstairs, so be prepared to climb a bit. The interior dining area felt well worn, and it was rather loud even with several empty tables, so quiet conversation wasn't easy amongst tablemates. But they had Hofbräu on the menu, a welcome way to help wrap up my day. I ordered a wurst sampler plate to accompany the beer, and the order did not take long to arrive. While each of the sausages had a nice snap, I was a little disappointed in the flavor of the bratwurst and the bauernwurst, as I expected them (especially the latter) to have a more noticeable quantity of spice. The link of knockwurst was the best of the three. I love good Rotkohl (red cabbage) and this wasn't bad, though throughout the big portion it seemed the flavor wasn't consistent throughout. I also had a nice portion of kraut -- but honestly I've had canned kraut from the store that's just as good. Prices here seem comparable with other German style restaurants in the area. There is an extra percentage added to the bill for non-cash payments, and this was posted for all to see when entering. I try not to let these fees factor into my reviews, but I'll admit I'm not a fan of them. Card processing costs should be part of doing business, and those who choose not to carry cash shouldn't be penalized. Would I come back? Sure. It wasn't a bad experience. But I wouldn't call it excellent either. read more

We got our food rather quickly and the sever was nice, although she asked if we were ready for the check when we still had more than half our food in our plate. We wanted to try some dessert, but since we felt rushed we just asked her to give us a few more minutes before bringing our check, since we were still eating. This is an old school German restaurant and bar, right by the outdoor Biergarten in Helen. They seem fairly knowledgeable about gluten, but don't have as many gluten free options as some places. They also don't have any good wine. The bar downstairs is tiny but cute. It used to be much bigger but they downsized. I got the bratwurst with mashed potatoes, and it was good. read more
