Blanton didn't charge me anything for an assessment.) So Zach came and gave me an assessment that seemed like a more involved (and pricier) fix than I thought was necessary for my slow-draining bathroom sink, but I'm not a plumber so I trusted him and agreed to the service. He quoted me a time frame "first thing tomorrow morning" and when I asked how long it would take I was told, "not more than an hour." At 1:45 pm my plumber arrived, a young guy, nice enough, he replaced the part that was needed but was not able to rod the pipe. He said it was not possible and said the only way to clear my back-up would be a very invasive major undertaking involving tearing out the pipes from underneath the house and replacing them; a job he estimated at $3,200. I said no thank you. By the time he left four hours later, my sink was in worse condition than when he arrived. It had been a slow drain before and was now at a complete stand still. He left me with standing water in the sink, a big mess on the floor which he did not offer to clean, and the dread of a potentially hugely disruptive plumbing process looming. My story has a happy ending, though. The next day I called Elk Grove Village Sewer & Plumbing. They had someone out to fix my problem (without a costly assessment) the same day and that guy was able to do the "impossible" rodding job in under 15 minutes. My sink drains perfectly now, no pipe-cutting necessary. The redeeming factor I will mention is that everyone I spoke to, including the receptionists, were courteous. Even so, I won't be bothering with J. Blanton again.

Two guys showed up and first power rodded the drain about 15 feet but couldn't go further because was worried it would scratch our thin PVC pipes. Then he camera scoped about 8 feet but then still worried it would damage the PVC pipes. I was disappointed we couldn't go further but I suppose it is what it is. He did clean out a good amount of tree roots and said that was probably the biggest blockage and though we couldn't see the rest, it will probably be OK. He said our pipes looked in OK condition, no holes as far as he could see. He was very nice and answered all of our questions. They did wear booties into the house but like every other contractor, they also wear the booties outside and then back inside everytime they go inside and outside. It was wet outside so some mud was tracked in all the way by the two people. Like I said, this seems to happen with all contractors, just a little nuisance to clean up afterwards. But overall, pleased with the service. They had competitive rates, $485 for the power rod and $200 for the camera. Will call them next time (maybe in 5 years?) when we need another cleaning. Thanks!
