No better place to go to buy spices by weight. Period. But be warned that no matter what day or what time you go it's going to be a tight fit and a fairly hectic experience. The aisles are narrow. They do gangbuster business seemingly from open til close. Individually weighing and bagging stuff takes time. There's not a lot of room for the checkout line to form without everyone kinda getting squished. And there will always be one person just chatting on their phone in the aisle or not waiting for their partner outside even though they should. I purchased a tea set for my kid for the holiday and now needed some tea leaves to make the tea. The Head Nut fit the bill. THN is a small and cramped store with shelves everywhere stacked high with so many loose products. There are hand-written signs everywhere with some advising not to open the hundreds of tea leaves and ask for assistance, but when I did I was told it was ok unless "you go overboard." I certainly didn't because the prices are high and didn't want to accidentally dump a whole bucket of tea. There are coffees, nuts, teas, candies, oils, honeys, soup mixes and lots of other surprises to find as long as you can avoid knocking things over. Cash discounts here of 10% on Thursdays, 3% all other days. Staff were friendly and helpful. I ended up with "Peaches and Flowers" and "Blood Orange Fruit Blend" loose leaf teas. 1/4lb each and it was just over $20. Hope they're good! read more

I visited this store to purchase some more of their great belgian chocolate coffee. However, I wanted to get 3 lbs of coffee @ the discounted 3 lb price. I requested to have 1 lb put in one bag and 2 lb put in the other. I was told if you split you cannot get the bulk discount. I said I AM getting 3 lbs but want to give a pound to my daughter to take back to college. I was told again NOPE everything MUST GO in 1 bag for the bulk price. At that point, I almost walked out but just asked if I could get a separate bag? Yes for 7 cents (seriously would it break their profit margin to make it easier for a customer?)... I got the coffee but will never go here again. Miserable employees that don't interact or smile at customers. Poor customer service... what is the difference between 1 or 2 bags? The answer, make the sale more difficult for the customer. AWFUL. Head Nut - You are the weakest link! Good way to push customers away. read more

[968] 8/3/2019 This Head Nut location is located in the Reading Terminal Market. I usually go to the Ardmore location so when I saw this location I HAD to stop in. It's a small store so the basics are available. I like that everything is fresh and by the pound. I didn't end up buying anything. They had a ton of people working there but they were so consumed in their loud conversation not a single person came over to see if I needed help. They were all kind of hanging around. Big turn off. I ended up leaving with nothing which stinks because their chocolate covered pretzels are amazing. I don't know if I will go back to this location. read more

Love that you can buy spices, teas, and coffee in bulk! They also have nuts and candies but that's never what catches my eye. I'll be back again to replenish some spices. January 2024, my friend received a gift bag with ground coffee from a Melmark in PA, a wonderful organization that offers integrated clinical and educational programs and services to adults and children. The coffee brand name is Main Line Coffee. It was Columbia Roast (Regular, not Decaf), and we thought it was delicious tasting. It tasted smooth and did not have a bitter after taste. However, the bag of coffee did not have an Internet Address or Telephone number displayed on the packaging. In my opinion bad marketing because we had to hunt around on the internet and call a few coffee shops in PA to finally find out where to buy the coffee. My suggestion, PLEASE add the phone number or internet address to the coffee label so customers can know how to reach out to the company when reordering. Thanks and love the coffee. I've come here a bunch of times to buy hard to find cooking spices. I love that you can buy an ounce or 2 so you aren't stuck w tons of a spice that you only need a pinch of. When I was here 2 weeks ago buying dill weed I noticed that they have tons of coffee beans. So tonight when we were doing our RTM shopping we stopped here so my boyfriend could buy a bunch of coffee types. (I don't drink coffee) He couldn't believe the selection and the costs. They also grind it to the texture that you request. The workers were so nice and so helpful! read more

Yowzas! This place rocks. I was looking for espresso in RTM yesterday, and I had a vague memory of a spice shop in that region of the market. As soon as I spotted it, I quickly remembered what I've been missing out on over the past year or so. This gem is hidden - but it is probably one of the coolest stands in the whole "jawn"! You can get rice, spice, tea, beans, coffee, chocolate, candies, and all other bulky goodness by the pound, half-pound, or quarter-pound... or heck, even buy the whole glass jar full of the rare discovery that awaits your consumption. I went here looking for espresso, and ended up leaving with some long-grain basmati rice (for $1.79 for half pound!) and a nice helping of dried dates, too! The friendly customer service attendant ground my coffee beans while I waited, and I was able to indulge in the most amazing cup of brewed espresso as soon as I got home yesterday. Any time I attend an event at the Pennsylvania Convention Center, I always make it a point to head to The Head Nut in the Reading Terminal Market. Sometimes I look forward to it more than whatever event I'm attending. My personal favorite is their double coated peanut butter / chocolate covered peanuts. They're absolutely delicious, and their price is very reasonable! They have a very nice selection of candy, nuts, spices, coffee, and more. read more

Nice selection of nuts (of course), herbs, sauces, salts, candy, teas, coffees, etc. This is an awesome store for browsing and you can always find something interesting to take home. We stopped in and bought .5 pounds of a selection of candied nuts including candied pecans which were crunchy, sweet, and buttery all at once. We had to observe a transaction in order to figure out you take the entire container of the product you want to the front counter, and have them weigh and bag the product for you. If you are feeling particular nice during your visit, take the container back to the aisle. This is teeny tiny space so the aisle are very tight and almost impossible to have two people cross each other in the aisles, so be mindful while shopping. They accept cards, however there is a $10 minimum which isn't hard to reach with all of the variety of products they have to offer. When I visit RTM this is always a stop I make. read more

Went here on Saturday afternoon after going to the Philly auto show. It was super packed. I didn't realize that you have to take the container to the register. I give this place props because they carry I wide variety of nuts, candy, spices and teas. We found chocolate gummy bears and salted chocolate almonds. This place fails because it took about 30 minutes to check out. A relatively small store and only two registers, there has to be a more efficient way to run this store. I don't think it is worth the wait. read more

I currently live in what I affectionately refer to as the boonies, so I figured I should preface this before I write a review here. This place contains a billion things that I can't obtain where I'm currently living (unless I'm made of money and willing to pay exorbitant prices). I did originally want to go The Spice Market, but timing was an issue. (All the more reason to return to visit Philly again someday, right?!). You bring the containers of the stuff you want up to the front and they measure it out for you. This might be an inconvenience to some people, but I definitely like it better than the thought of a billion random customers going through these containers each and every day. I'm sure there are some things here that are more expensive than you'd be able to find elsewhere, but I thought the prices were pretty reasonable, and again, bulk prices will pretty much always be cheaper than the tiny little containers you get at grocery stores. I stocked up on coconut flour, Hungarian paprika, sesame seeds, turmeric, coriander, and garam masala. :] I was really excited about all the other stuff, but figured I probably shouldn't buy the entire store, so I showed some restraint. Service was very friendly and I didn't have to wait very long, despite it being a Saturday afternoon. I believe they take credit cards if your purchase is over $10. :O read more

I love this place! Located towards the back of Reading Terminal Market, just behind Tootsie's, this place has it all! Everything from spices, grains and coffee. Everything is organized well and clearly labeled. Prices are good and you definitely get more bang for your buck in terms of quantity. I almost exclusively come here now when I need spices or grains. They have a huge selection and everything is fresh and stored appropriately. I've sometimes had a hard time finding what I was looking for, but the employees are really friendly and helpful and know exactly where things are. Just keep in mind that they have a $10 minimum to use your credit card. Otherwise, you have to use cash. I'm definitely a regular here now and love that they're located in center city Philly! read more

The Head Nut is one of our top stops whenever we visit Reading Terminal Market for groceries. They have a wide range of herbs, spices, chocolate, coffee, and teas. We usually get our cooking spices and the ingredients for making homemade granola. Take the tubs of the stuff you want and bring it to the counter. Tell them how much of it you want (by weight) and they'll pack it in little plastic bags and send you on your way. Their very reasonable pricing goes to show just how much of your dollar goes towards the fancy packaging of modern products. I usually shop at The Head Nut in Arddmore, but I was having lunch at The Reading Terminal and decided to give this one a t It's a lot smaller and they carry most of the items I usually purchase. They sell my favorite coffee brand called Mainline Coffee Rosters. I am fond of the Viennese Sumatra and the Ethiopian Yirgichette. The Head Nut also carry hard to find exotic candies and tons of dried fruits and nuts. The staff is knowledgeable and friendly and if it's very busy, the line can be long but moves fast. I head straight for the dark chocolate almond bark and the ginger candy. There are many items that I really crave here and the Head Nut never ceases to disappoint my cravings. read more

I was very satisfied with the different selections of spices and loved how its in bulk and you can get as much or as little (i think a small as 1 ounce) to try different things. I would return. I've always gone to the Head Nut for my spices and ingredients throughout my time in Philly. I decided to "keep a small business alive" by spending over 80 dollars here worth of spices, coffee, peanuts and chocolate. I grabbed anything that caught my attention. However, when the store clerk grabbed coffee beans I was NEVER asked to get my coffee grinded. When I got home, I decided to make the walk back to get my coffee grinded - simple and no big deal right? Instead they said due to coronavirus they couldn't take back coffee. - ok fine? The beans are in the bag and you can wipe the packaging if needed. Despite that, I was told I'm out of luck with no resolution. I left with no coffee, no apology, and complete discomfort about what happened. I had to WALK BACK to the store to voice my complete displeasure I felt like they could of done SOMETHING. Unwillingly, like a passive aggressive child they decided give to give me just one bag of coffee out of my two bags that I bought. LOL The store clerk that was helping me, the manager on duty, and whoever was behind the register who I've seen a million times DIDN'T STEP UP. Way to look out for your customers looking out for you. You won't get classy nuts here. I won't be back here unless I need to -like a hot ex-girlfriend. I'll be looking for a new place for my nuts. read more

To say I am a regular shopper at Reading Terminal Market is an understatement- I am there literally daily, if not multiple times a day. I was eager to check out this new stall after the older spice place had gone out. However after going in there today it is highly unlikely I will ever be back. Today I found myself there- along with many other customers- confusedly wandered the aisles seeing signs all over that said "Limit one item per bag." However, there were NO bags in sight! The two salespeople were just kind of standing at the counter, clearly witnessing our absolute confusion and not helping at all. Eventually, my husband asked one of them how you were supposed to purchase any of the items in the large bins. We were informed that we were supposed to bring the WHOLE bin to the front of the store and they would scoop it for you. Are you freaking kidding me?! Me- the paying customer---and let me assure you, the items are not cheap--- I am supposed to schlep big bins of flour, wasabi peas and sesame sticks to you----the stafff?? I'm sorry? This is what is passing for customer service these days?! Not to mention, I was planning on getting a bunch of stuff...logistically this system makes absolutely no sense. If this isn't going to be a serve yourself system (as all the signs imply it is) then they need to have additional staff assisting customers. Needless to say, I left without purchasing anything, which is a real shame because they certainly do have an ample stock of items I would have been very interested in trying out. read more

This is my favorite spot in Reading Terminal Market. It's small shop tucked away in a corner next to the bathrooms, so it's really easy to miss, but search around a little bit because it's well worth it. The Head nut sells spices, grains, coffee, tea, candy, nuts, etc. in bulk. Spices end up being way cheaper because they just throw them in a plastic baggy for you and weigh them by the oz or 1/4 pound. Coffee and tea aren't necessarily cheap, but it's all loose leaf and there's a great selection, so I always come when I need to restock tea. Sometimes I'll literally just stand in an aisle and smell different teas for 15 minutes....it's kind of small so people probably don't like that I do that. But any candy, trail mix, whatever you want you can find here, and you get it by weight! How great is that! Sometimes I go just to get a pound of chocolate covered sunflower seeds. And sometimes I make better choices. They also sell packaged baking mixes, nut butters in containers, and a few sauces and random items like that. Check it out next time you're there. This store certainly does not have everything and their prices are not the best. But, that being said, you can find some items that are otherwise difficult to obtain, and occasionally, the prices aren't too bad either. Like most stores, you should shop selectively here since not everything is of the best quality or the best price. For example, a lot of the oils/extracts/etc that they sell behind the counter you can get for MUCH cheaper just a couple of blocks away in Chinatown. But, overall, it's a decent store and the employees are pretty friendly. The coffee is good quality and especially affordable compared to other local coffee roasters. read more
