This place is absolutely magical - one of the nicest specialty markets/grocers I've come across. Packed into a charming small space they have an incredible selection of cheeses, mocktails, unique and stellar-quality produce (even in winter), bulk items (nuts, granola, lentils, etc), and more. Grabbed Mother's Day bouquets from here, not sure why the paper the flowers were wrapped in were super wrinkly. It didn't seem like grace and time was used to wrap the flowers. Some of the flowers were already wilted. Devona rung me up incorrectly at first, then I had to correct the pricing on my bouquets 3x until she got it right. In general - the prices are pretty high on items. The vibes are immaculate though and the location is great. read more

I loved river wards when they opened in a garage then transitioned to Norris Street. Oodles of lovely produce and groceries. One summer, trays of organic tomatoes for $10.00! The excitement. Their news on Instagram, creative and inviting. Staff full of vim and vigour. Over the past couple of years the fun and joy seems to have evaporated. Even the staff can be miserable and upperty. Still stocked with interesting products but on the whole the magic has left. read more

What a gem to have in the neighborhood. Oh, you want morels and can't go foraging for them? No problem, they got you. Need a Buddha's Hand? Got that too. Truly, their beet and ginger juice is a staple I grab when I'm there, it's spicy, just the right amount of sweet and beet. I really love Riverwards for its contribution to the neighborhood grocery scene, its great products, and the very friendly staff. There aren't too many great options for buying food in the Fishtown area with the large grocery offerings being sub-par. Riverwards of course offers a great produce selection, apropos of its name. They also have fun things like fresh sandwiches and wraps, organic products, baked goods, and a small frozen foods section. You probably wouldn't do your entire grocery shopping here but it's great for fresh and specialty items. I almost forgot that they usually have a great offering of plants and flowers. All that said, I usually go here to buy local coffee. They have a great selection of locally roasted beans that you just can't buy unless you go directly to the roasters. So I like this place a lot but I'll start with the cons because the list is shorter. High prices. Cannot get most of the things I need for the week here. However it's an awesome place with tons of new things I want to try every time I go in there. It really came in handy when my dog was on the raw diet. They have all the Primal products. My wife loves all the CBD stuff they have going on. I love all the types of coffee. They carry Jig-bees flowers! They are a local supplier that also did our wedding arrangements. Amazing stuff. Is Riverwards expensive? Yes, yes it is, but I used to think it was more so until I went to the IGA. The produce is actually cheaper, fresher, and better quality than the larger grocery stores. Because they carry mostly higher quality, locally sourced, and artisanal items these are often much more expensive than big brand counterparts in other grocery stores. However, if you compare the same items in other grocery stores you will find Riverwards fairly priced. We mostly stop in out of convenience and it's good for produce but if you need to stock up on things this is not the best place to do it unless you have a small fortune to spend on weekly groceries. read more

Avoid! I just tried to buy guacamole at their Old City Store. The cashier told they just them in today. I looked at 12 or 15 containers, everyone they had. Everyone was rotten! Either it had a big brown spot on top or the first quarter inch was brown. And then, they lied about it! "Oh that's okay, you can just scrape it off." Wrong! If they lie about the guacamole, which is obviously wrong (I worked on an avocado farm. Something was mishandled) what else are they lying about? Do not trust them! I'm so thankful to have a grocery store like Riverwards in the neighborhood. The prices are a little high but it's a good place to stop to get some specialty foods. I last came in to pick up some NYE treats. They had the sparking cider that I needed for our sober NYE and I also picked up some special collaboration NYE cheese just for Riverwards. To be honest, I have already eaten all the cheese it was THAT good. They have a small selection of everything you could need and I can always make it work when I shop at Riverwards. Riverwards makes me wish we bought a place in Fishtown. Talk about an amazing local market that's committed to supporting other local businesses - that scores major points with me. We have been in a few times and each time, it leaves me wishing we had a place like this in NoLibs/Old City. I don't want to give big stores my money and would prefer to support local. Throw in an amazing Yelp caramel apple event - where we are exposed to the owner who was just awesome - well, that scored major points too (and more "wish you were in our 'hood envy"). I'm starting to realize I've got a thing for locally-owned neighborhood grocery stores. Walking into Riverwinds Produce over the weekend, I realized my ideal neighborhood grocery exists, even if it's located on the opposite side of the city from where I live! This place has everything! From a nice selection of fresh produce to nearly every Philly-made baked good, snack, or beverage. We stopped in to stock up on Movement Labs' Yerba Maté, after learning it's no longer in production (wah!). We ended up finding several other items to get us through the week ahead, plus a friendly staff who were all happy to help. I'll be back the next time, and probably every time, I'm in Fishtown! read more

SO EXCITED that they are in the neighborhood! Old City now has a fabulous new local grocery store and we just visited this afternoon. Beautiful produce, an amazing cheese selection, and so many locally sourced products! It also has a grainery (see attached pics) with a huge selection for sustainable groceries. Besides catering to meat lovers with gourmet sausage selections and meats, there was also a wide variety of vegetarian and vegan selections. Really friendly staff too. I love this place! I just moved here and this is my 'go to' market. It's a small, charming market with all the things that I most commonly need. Basically they have all of the fresh things that I find in box stores in the perimeter aisles. I addition they have some great small brands that have become some of my new favs. They have heaters on the street for people that are in queue during busy times. A decent selection of cheese, a reasonable selection of crackers, and some really good high quality strawberries to top it off (sliced strawberries + honey goats cheese + a salted cracker was the hit of the afternoon). I'm so thankful for this neighborhood gem. Not only do they do a fantastic job sourcing their materials, but they are also very active on their social media account and in touch with the Fishtown community. I love that they have extended their merch to include plants and flowers and other home goods. I only wish they could carry chicken breasts! The items they carry are higher priced but I associate it to the quality. When they can, they offer great deals such as their cherry tomatoes or avocado (.75) deals. I appreciate how much they bring to this neighborhood and I only wish they could be in an even bigger space so I could do all of my shopping there. I've been dying to come here for a few weeks now! Finally visited today and loved it! I'll be honest, I wasn't greeted or acknowledged when I walked in and the employees didn't seem very friendly. But when I did confront one for help, they immediately helped me and were very nice! The main cashier was just kind of reserved. I loved the array of produce! I was so excited to see purple and white sweet potatoes! I picked up a bunch. I loved their citrus selection (its citrus season!) and picked up a couple red navel orange. They were so sweet and delicious. While I was there I also looked through their meatless selection and saw Field Roast vegan Katsu cutlets on sale for $5.99! I'm excited to give them a try. They also had a super cute gift section, I picked up some Urban Cheesecraft kits for my dad. Can't wait to see how those work out too. I will definitely be back for more exotic produce! read more

Love this place and can't wait to go back! Everything was fresh and if it wasn't it was marked down. They bring in cool special produce like ramps and fiddleheads. By the time I got there the fiddleheads were gone but will be back! They also carry Primal Meats for you meat eaters. Looking forward to buying chicken there for my husband. I filled up my bag with fruits, veggies, and salad fixing for $22! My only suggestion is to avoid the romaine lettuce, its $5 for the same stuff they sell everywhere. I got arugula instead. Our friends told us about this grocery shop when we first moved to the neighborhood, and we kept that in our back pockets and went months before actually walking over. What a mistake it was to wait! Riverwards has all the local produce/goods you need to keep a healthy lifestyle along with some essential non-food household items. They invite local businesses to do pop-ups at the shop too which is a valuable way to find out about Philly people/brands to support. (I could name-drop but you should really just go in and check it out.) If you're shy and want to research before heading over, follow them on social media to discover what they carry and for news/events surrounding their business. This may sound silly if you don't appreciate small businesses and their positive impact on communities, but when we explored buying a home in this city, Riverwards was one of the considerations that kept us in Fishtown. read more

There never used to be problems back when I used to press the button that says I don't need a receipt, but now, EVERY time I go there, i check the receipt and what do you know? I have been over-charged for several items! Then I have to wait for them to refund, check my bank statement everyday for the next two weeks, and it is a veritable time-rape. If you must shop there, pay VERY CLOSE attention to the prices and receipt. BE SURE to accept a receipt. read more

I'm really thankful this store is here. They tend to carry the kinds of things I like to buy: organic, natural, veg. The store looks great, and even as they have expanded to meet growing demand, they have managed to creatively maximize their relatively small space while keeping the appearance and vibe good. They also seem to be listening when customers request things. I find prices reasonable. I'm also happy (and able) to pay a little more to support a small, independent grocer. My constructive criticisms are that sometimes stock is unreliable. They may carry something and then they don't have it anymore. Then it comes back later. It's difficult to divert your dollars to support a small business over a larger chain if you never know if something will be in or will continue being in stock. Another thing is that I find that produce can be a little shaky. I prefer organic, but they don't always have a good selection. I realize it's a small store, and they try to support local growers (who may not grow those kind of crops), so I cut them some slack. (Riverwards: do you ever encourage local conventional farmers to consider going organic?) Though I've tried to support them, sometimes it hasn't worked out well. Organic berries, for instance, have been a let down. I have tried twice and they both have gone bad within a day. The berries have been very wet when I get them, so there seems to be some issue with spraying or fridge settings that's overlooked. The other problem I've had is with up and down customer service. I don't expect perfect. It's retail and I know what it's like to deal with people all day. However, some of the cashiers seem way out of touch about basic customer service protocol. One in particular, a Caucasian woman with long curly brown hair, is consistently unpleasant to deal with. Her tone is oddly condescending. Like she might ask you how you are, you say "ok", and she replies back sarcastically, "ooooo.kay." The last time I was in she literally did not put her phone down the entire transaction. She actually looked at her phone more than me. When I first approached, she was texting. And she did not begin to help me until she had finished the text. I don't expect people to not use their phones when it's slow, but when you have a customer, put. it. down. I'm giving them four stars because I'm there for the food and I think they're doing an overall great job with that. read more

An amazing grocery store that packs a punch for its small size. Granted, you wont pay Safeway prices, items lime meat and diary are a bit more expensive. But that's kind of the point, excellent quality, regionally sourced, ethical meat and dairy isn't cheap. But if you shop the seasonal produce you will pay similar prices to other grocery stores. It definitely is not the only grocery store I go to but its the one I go to the most. I can do a regular grocery store big, bulk run about every 2-3 weeks and then shop produce as Riverwards for the next couple weeks. They have done an excellent job with civic and I feel way more confident shopping there than the corporate stores. I have always found the employees to be kind and courteous too. read more

Was excited to shop for local produce at a local grocer. Unfortunately, the selection of local produce was minimal at best. The strawberries and blueberries were the same, non organic, Driscoll's brand I can find at a Sam's Club. When I stopped on Mothers Day, I was disappointed to find no flowers available for purchase and the front of the store was empty, save for some cases of LaCroix seltzer. Overall, a disappointing experience that pales in comparison to their original location. read more

I was a backer for Riverwards on Kickstarter, and the realization of their retail space is better than I even imagined. What a change from the humble garage pop-up of summers past! Each time I visit, the offerings have expanded. There are lots of options for fresh produce, excellent coffees and shelf-stable staples, bulk bins, and an ever-increasing selection of dairy, meats, and seafood.
