This is a fun maze of a shop that carries everything from hot sauce to coffee o trail mix. I bought some unusually flavored truffles which were delicious, but not much better than the kind you can get at most grocery stores. I've also gotten their chocolate covered potato chips and their jalapeno gummies which were flavorful and fun, but again not much different than what you'd get at Trader Joes. I'll be back because it's fun to meander through, and I'm optimistic about finding something unusually wonderful here. read more

My love-hate relationship with the Head Nut persists. Love the product, hate the experience. Someone in my family had to have pecan pie for the holiday so off I go to the place I know will have the freshest pecan halves. It's the Sunday before Christmas so I know I have to get there by opening time. Sure enough they have what I want and at 10 am, there is a line at the door. By the time I checked out, the line at the register was 6 deep. They were double parking in the parking lot. Patience is the virtue that will get you through here. The system they have is unique, and works for the store but not for the customer. There used to be a list posted of all the things behind the counter - no more. Regarding the things in bins, you must carry them to the counter, or hold them if there is no counter space- unless we're talking coffee or tea. That they get for you. There is no self-serve except prepackaged items. You get the picture. It's confusing. If you are new and just want to browse a bit and ask questions, come on a not so busy day. Go for nuts, grains, snacks, chocolates, candies, spices, plus other arcana that no one else has. Check out their website before you go. They have gift boxes and bags but they charge for everything so even if you drop $100 in candy, be prepared to spend a nickel for each of the gift bags. They do roast some of their own coffees, hence the Main Line Coffee Roasters moniker, but it is not roasted on the main line since the "neighbors" we're offended by the roasted coffee smell. They now roast it in an industrial park location in Yeadon. I've been by there and it smells wonderful! read more

If you love food, candy, tea, coffee, I mean if you love eating or if you love cooking, then do not miss this treasure in the suburbs outside of Philly. It's a weird maze of a grocery. They specialize in unique, rare, unusual dry/nonperishable foodstuffs. You go in the entrance and grab yourself a basket. The whole joint is laid out in narrow aisles; it's will be optimal to do your best to only travel forward. As you go in, you pass candy and boxed/bag tea. They have a good selection of sugarless candies for my diabetics and keto types out there. There's a whole section of kosher confections. Then there's The Aisle of Sauce. Every sauce you ever dreamed of is here. I put a big smile on Honey's face with the bacon Sriracha from here. Then you enter the room of dried fruit, nuts, spices, yet more fancy types of candies, dried persian-style lemons, huge jars of grains, snack mixes. Here, you can finally get enough wasabi peas to satisfy that craving. And past this room is my personal favorite, the shrine full of bulk tea and whole-bean coffee. They will grind the coffee for you if you like. (Although obviously you're grinding your own by hand before tenderly bathing it in your hand-made pour-over setup, you mustachioed freak.) They have many excellent-quality teas and their herbal selection is really terrific. One item I must mention from this area: the Cold Chaser herbal tea. This shit works. It will make you feel better fast. I generally buy a huge bag whenever I get up to Philly. They also have those flavored syrups that some folks put in their beverages. Last note: there is a cash discount. Plenty of parking. Do not miss this. read more

This is a great place to stock up on quinoa and steel cut oats - do not bother getting them in the grocery store! A friend who shops here mentioned that everything is cheaper here besides the sugar! Go here for all of your staples, kids! It is very tight in there - don't attempt walking around with a stroller or carrying your baby in his carseat. I should know. Can't say enough good things about the place! The staff were friendly and very helpful, greeted us with a smile and went out of their way to help us make our selections as we were first timers (I heard their ad on the radio the day before and HAD to visit right away). The selection and variety is incredible and all of the products we purchased were fresh, delicious and a great value. It was absolutely worth the 45 minute drive to get here from New Jersey and it will be a regular trip for us. Can't recommend them enough! read more

I love this place! If you're a tea or coffee lover you will most definitely love it too. They have an enormous selection of loose roasted coffee beans and so many loose tea options! The price point is fantastic as well. I know some of the other reviewers mentioned poor customer service or rude employees. I have not encountered this myself but I haven't needed to request help with anything. I lived within 2 blocks of this place for over 3 years, and I have never bothered to stop in. I'm not sure why, maybe it was the dirty appearance on the outside. Maybe it was the lack of parking, I can't pin it down. The thing that got me in the door to this place was a sale of Wilbur buds. Wilbur buds were the inspiration for the Hershey's kiss, except they are made with much better chocoloate. We walked over to the Nut on a weekend, and it was jam packed. There was a line 20 deep to check out. I can see the attraction to this place. Its like an old school candy store. The kind that were on every block 50 years ago. I thought that kind of store was an extinct species, but the Head Nut has proved me wrong. read more

The Head Nut offers a bewildering array of nuts, candies, healthy grains, coffee, tea, and other baking and cooking items. It is small and cramped, and when busy you'll struggle to move about. However, it is well worth the trip when you are looking for those special items you just can't find at a regular grocery store. Their coffee and loose tea selection is outstanding, as is their offering of healthy grains. Also, it is the best place to find popcorn...no, not the prepackaged stuff but the old time cook in a kettle type. They have half a dozen or so different popcorn varieties which when cooked in an old time popper with some oil are a dream. When busy you can expect to wait some time to checkout, but this place is so nifty and cool that you don't mind. read more

If there's ever an Apocalypse and I need a fallout shelter to survive - the Head Nut is what I will use as my fallout shelter. Why you ask, I could survive forever or all the morsels of goodness this place has: Nuts, Nuts, Nuts, and more nuts. I love my nuts. Cashews, almonds, walnuts oh my. Baking chocolate, peanut butter chips, white chocolate, and carmel drops. Oh the Baking wonders I can create using the sweets found here. Coffee and tea galore in an entire room from floor to ceiling. Strong, mild, whatever you like I guarantee they have. Hot sauces, olive oils, extracts, and more. Walk down this narrow hallway and be mesmerized by the plethora of options for all cooking needs. Need sprinkles, come here to find the rainbow of all Sprinkles and Holiday options as well. *Fudge too by the way! Checking out can be a little time consuming since everything needs to broken down into the amount you like. Totally worth the wait for the product and the price. If I need a fall out shelter, I'm locking myself in the Head Nut. I will be the most awake and well fed person in the World. Just Saying! read more

Best. Place. Ever. Seriously a tea, coffee, and snack lover heaven. The seasoning section is unfortunately a little bare in variety compared to spice shops, but still reliable for basic things plus a few surprises (all praise be to the Applewood smoked salt). You can also find some ethnic goods without having to go into the city. The tea section is my favorite though. My boyfriend has taken a liking to their sweet lemon tea, while the watermelon grape rooibos and kaleidoscope are my favorites (so far). Lots of fun and interesting blends. The place has a great selection of coffees, teas, spices, candies and nuts stored in trash cans. But seriously, the most modern thing they have is their cash registers which I bet are from 1988. The place probably hasn't changed since... ever. The shop is big, but has so many things crammed in to it that it is really hard to find anything. And if you are standing in front of a shelf you really cant see the jars below chest height because you are too close to see down that low. And don't try to bend to see anything because you WILL knock over what is behind you. It is a good place if you need only one or two things and there aren't many customers in there. It is so tight that when there are few people in there you become log jammed. If you don't mind your nuts coming from little green trash cans and seeds from plastic containers that are held together with packing tape, then this is your place! Again, great selection and ok prices. I've heard the staff is rude but I didn't deal with them at all except for when I got to the register to pay. (after a 20 minute wait in line) You should see it once. read more

I'm giving one star for coffee from the Head Nut. I have purchased coffee from many places in my lifetime, and no matter where that was, I was never overcharged like I was by the Head Nut. For example, I go to another vendor and choose a coffee that is $10 per lb, and I buy a 1/2 lb., I pay $5, or I buy a 1/4 lb., and pay $2.50. It makes sense, is fair, and that's how it is done in the marketplace. In fact, that is how most open unpackaged food products that are priced by weight are sold. But when I went to the Head Nut and purchased a half pound of coffee that sells for $10 lb., I paid $7.50, or $4.50 for a quarter pound. That is taking advantage of customers good faith in being treated equally in the marketplace. And, they are very smug in their attitude about that -- no apologies, ever! . . . . and I'm reading that many people, in both the favorable and negative reviews, are saying the people who work there are either rude, lazy, or paranoid watching customers to the degree it makes you very uncomfortable. The rudeness and bad manners seems to be systemic at this place, and that seems odd. I think what is going is that the employees are family members. I noticed those slender male employees are also constantly hovering over the females there like vultures -- one you spot that, its hard not to see it or ignore it. As for anyone else, perhaps the pay is very low and that would also explain some of the bad manners. As for their coffee selection, its just regular coffee. And I think many of their coffee's are roasted too dark. I'm not even sure about the freshness of their coffee. It is very easy to mask freshness imperfections, by over roasting coffee, making it too dark, so it is not as easily detected if it had been roasted lighter. Of course, when you have a large selection of coffees, but you are also a small vendor, its easy to see why many coffees are just going to sit too long without being sold -- its a slow turnover. Once its roasted its going to stale quicker. When I returned to purchase more coffee, the bins of coffee virtually looked the same as they did when I was there previously -- the piles of coffee were still in the same shape, and at the same height, indicating those coffees were not being sold. And whenever I was there in the coffee section, there never was any other customers buying coffee. So, I do not recommend purchasing coffee from the Head Nut. There are just too many other vendors that are willing to be fair in their pricing, roast lighter, and have a higher turn over insuring a fresh product. read more

Absolutely impossible not to walk out of here with a bag full of pantry needs plus some awesome snacks to boot! I've been going here since I was a child. When I was a kid, there were little sample jars all over the counter too and my brother and I would sample chocolate-covered *everything.* Alas, the sample jars are gone, but the quality of the wares within this place remains. Fresh-ground coffee, more varieties of tea than you can shake a teapot at, candies galore, cheap nuts, fun snack mixes, and incredible spice prices. For example, you can get 1/4 lb of cumin for $1.49. That's a *lot* of cumin! Imagine 5+ little McCormick's jars. Beware, there is a lot of tempting stuff in this store, particularly near the registers. Also look for the discount rack in a little corner past all the hot sauces. Enjoy! read more

The Head Nut is an amazing store. When it first opened in Drexel Hill, it was TemTee, I think. That was many years ago, surely it must be at least 35 years. I have never been to any store that compared...from all kinds of snacks, teas, nuts, salty things, candies, dried fruits...I can't even think of all that they carry! The store is jam packed, you feel squeezed in, every customer is so pleasant about that because we just LOVE THIS PLACE! and feel so privileged that such a place exists! I've going here for years and love the products and the store. They have a help wanted sign up. My daughter, who is 16 but has relevant experience from 2 summer jobs, inquired. The staff were encouraging. She went back and got an application and was told to return a third time to talk to a manager. The manager barely acknowledged her, and told her they weren't hiring when 2 signs were up. My daughter looks young but she was blown off and dismissed. Not even a conversation. It was rude. And a poor way to model anything. My daughter was courteous and prepared. I'm reconsidering the store but the rest of the staff were really kind to her. read more

This place is great. I will warn you now that it is small but personally, it's so wonderful that it doesn't bother me. In one room they have teas, a small but interesting selection of soft drinks, a candy counter and little gift boxes of candies, snack foods and a little counter where you can sit and have coffee.The other room is where they sell the bulk items- spices, candy, chocolates, nuts, snack food (i recommend wasabi peas) and loose leaf tea and loose coffee. The staff, as far as I have seen are very nice, I think the owner and their family run the place most of the time , either that or the staff have been there forever! I have found the prices to be reasonable, they always have some kind of deal highlighted as well. The selection is wide and very unique. The absolute best coffee in the neighborhood. I never go to any of the chain coffee houses any longer. But why would I when I can sit down at the bar and order my choice of the daily offerings, such as the smoky, deeply roasted Roma hot or iced, Tanzanian Peaberry, Ethiopian Yirgacheffe, etc. Here's the kicker--treat yourself to one of the biscotti (my personal favorite is the chocolate dipped) and kick back to the delightful banter of the wonderful staff; Angel, Theresa, and Radika are such gems. read more

I hadn't shopped here in years, and now I remember why- the staff here is obnoxious. I had a few pre-bagged items in hand (yesterday, 11/26 at about 11:15am)and the customer ahead of me in line graciously allowed me to step in front of him. The cashier SCREAMED at him. So much for the holiday spirit. While in line, I continued to watch the two female cashiers snap at, criticize and generally bark at every customer. More than half of them left. one would think i'd have ventured inside the nut many times in the 4+ years i've been living just down the street. but no. i ducked in for the first time this morning for one very specific item that has proven to be quite elusive in this area, and only the head nut had it in stock - strawberry hard candies with the strawberry printed wrapper! now, i don't suspect there is a legion of people in search of these candies...but if so, now you know where to find them. and if not, it is worth noting to keep this place in mind when searches for other equally random treats are seemingly as fruitless. in addition to my 2 pounds worth of candies (i nearly cleaned them out!), i also picked up a bag of honey wheat pretzels, plantain chips, a pumpkin spice coffee and an end piece of a tasty cranberry loaf being sold at a discounted price of $0.39, not for lack of freshness, but because it was an unloved end(!) i wanted to keep browsing, but was in a bit of a rush to get to work and there was simply too much to take in. i'll be back for sure...both to shop and to show the super friendly woman behind the counter a photo - as requested - of why on earth i was on a hunt for these specific candies! just in case: http://www.nutsonline.com/images/items/05787l1.jpg read more

This place is so amazing! I can't think of anything that they don't have. Nuts, Spices, Sauces, Jams, Oils, Candy, Teas, Coffee and snacks. That's only a fraction of what they have! However, I'm only giving it 3 stars because the staff is a little unfriendly and I felt weird about the guy who stands near the line watching everything you pick up and put down. I was definitely followed around when I went to grab my Sirrachia Popcorn. Guess they thought I was going to stash some nuts under my Hijab. Oh.My.God. like a kid in a candy store.. or an adult in a candy store. I guess I'm more of a kidult or something. Anyway. So I don't like shopping too much, like I only get clothes at old navy, I've been into old navy 800 times but still sometimes when I go in there I get really overwhelmed and just buy that same polo in a new color and get the hell out of there. My first experience at the head nut was not too different from that. I go by this place on my way into the city and see this sign in the window for gummy bears something or other per pound and think mmmmm i could go for some gummy bears, but I always drive right by... not this time. So I pull into the parking lot, it's about 8pm. There are no cars in the lot and for a split second I think.. are they open? and if they are open, why are there no cars here? do I really want to do this? alright, drink a glass of cement and harden the eff up, let's go. So I go in, it's a pretty small room, there's this older woman at the counter who greats me and I look around and see bread and tea, but nothing I couldn't get down at the Acme. Then I see this little hallway and I say.. wtf, go adventure down it. There are all these canisters of stuff with labels that I've never heard of. I see one that says "meat dry rub" and say hey I have a bbq coming up... but no, I venture on. There's a room with floor to ceiling hot sauce that I peek into, but again, I venture on. Then I get to ANOTHER room, it's like one of those crazy houses in the traveling carnival. This room has tons and tons of candy, chocolate, nuts JACKPOT!! I look around for a little with wide eyes and then stumble into yet another room. This one is filled with jars of coffee beans and loose-leaf tea. I have a bit of a cold and can't smell anything but man could I smell the aromas in that room! I take a deep breath, knowing that I have to go back into the overwhelming room of candy and pick out something so I can get the hell outta there before I spend my whole week's paycheck. I pick up a bag of "jet plane gummies" $2.95 for a whole pound! Saweet! I pay the nice girl and head out. I need to go back. read more

i literally live around the corner from this place. first off, it's called the head nut. c'mon, who wouldn't love that? it's a mecca for any bulk food needs: coffee, loose and bagged tea, candy, nuts, spices, dried fruits, rice and grains, etc. they also serve coffee and tea and have an unbelievable selection of hot sauces. it's the place you go to when you need some loose darjeeling, a tiny bit of garam masala for that indian dish you're trying to make, a giant bag of sour patch kids, pitted prunes, cholula, and that chocolate bar you've been craving since your trip to england. it's a havertown / ardmore institution, and i'm honored to be a neighbor. read more

The employees are so rude. I was going in there for take out coffee since it was within walking distance to my house. There's an old lady with tattoos that works behind the coffee bar and she loved to give me dirty looks each time I approached and ordered something other than the self serve coffee. (Brewed organic coffee and some other flavor is kept behind the bar.) One day a bunch of employees were standing in a cluster at one section of the store, against the wall and no one was anywhere near the coffee bar. I stood and waited, I don't know, maybe a minute before I started to approach the cluster to get someone's attention. As I did this, the old lady emerged, walked toward the coffee bar, sighed and gave me a dirty look. And even after that I went back. I must be a glutton for punishment. I walked in to order some coffee and this time there was another younger woman behind the counter talking and laughing with the tattoo lady. (Again they keep certain brewed ones behind the bar so it's not self serve) While I stood there waiting to order, the old tattoo lady whispered into the younger woman's ear.. The younger woman glanced around and looked at me as her ear was being whispered into. As the younger woman was saying to me, "What can I get you?" Old tattoo lady says louder than I have ever heard her speak before, "I'll tell ya later." I don't know what was said then or later, but I was never nasty, mean or rude. I was a customer wanting to buy a product and simply ordering it in a nice friendly manner. I've had similar experiences in the other section of the store as well. The employees behind the counter don't smile when you approach the counter and they can't be bothered to say hi either. (Except one employee who is my neighbor and very nice.) The wait in line becomes awkward as people hold the containers they want things from or try to find space on a counter that has none to put it down on. Why make your customers bring up the containers? This gets very difficult the heavier the container and the more items someone wants. It's a ridiculous system. So for coffee I stick with Wawa and for bulk items I stick with Whole Foods. Both self serve and satisfy my needs. Besides that, the employees are friendly at both of those places. I won't ever go to or recommend The Head Nut to anyone. read more

Just recently waited my long turn for service and said good morning to female employee. I was greeted with a blank stare. I said good morning once again. Her response was" what do you want". This is my go to place for spices, bulk nuts and snacks. They have everything- well almost. i am sad that they stopped carrying the Ginger people's ginger juice. A key ingredient which I used in my Asian stir fry dishes as well as in my homemade tonics for an upset stomach. I was just there yesterday to buy garam masala to make channa masala ( chick pea stew). Oh joy! This place is very crammed and 5 customers in the spice room is claustrophobic. I try and avoid this place when I'm hungry because I end up buying tons of various snack mixtures and candy. read more

This is a portion of the letter I sent to owner a year ago. And, would you believe I have not been given the dignity of a response. It has been a year since I have patronized this location in Ardmore. Prior to the 2nd week of August 2014, I looked forward to shopping at this establishment at least twice a month. However, as a result of being deeply embarrassed by one of the women who evidently, by her actions was in a management position, I have not been back nor do I intend to patronize this store again. On the occasion in question, there was miscommunication on how I wanted the coffee ground. One of the employees literally verbally denigrated me in the presence everyone in the store with her tirade instructing me on how to order coffee. She even went to one of the other employees with the coffee asking her if she wanted it because nothing else could be done with it. I rate this one star on two things only, their service and their prices. I know my food and i know my dried food, and this place is high on prices and low on service. I went in asking for valentines candy hearts and you might have thought i asked the guy to make them! Sir they are back there, now i'm not a retarded individual but when i go and look they aren't there. SO what happens you ask....i tell him again they are not there, finally he gets all snippy with me and goes and looks and says oh here they are and i told you they are back here. Needless to say i got into an argument with somebody and then was so mad i wasn't going to give this place anymore of my business.
