This is a cute store and the lady was very nice. That said, make sure you thoroughly examine your purchase before leaving. My hat has a crease in it that won't come out. I noticed it right after getting to our timeshare, and they already closed. Tried to go back the next day which was Monday. Internet said they open at 11am. Sign on the door said open to Thursday to Sunday. Thursday waited til 11am and they never opened. No response to email, phone call or Instagram message. We are only there once a year and leave Friday. Still no access to store or response from anyone. I paid $55 for a defective hat that I am stuck with. So not a happy customer. Lesson learned. Buyer be aware, I guess. Make sure you thoroughly inspect your purchase before leaving the store. read more

I needed a Kentucky derby hat and the almost new owner was the sweetest person. She knows her hats and what might look good on people. She was kind and made the experience super fun. It's not the kind of shop where you grab hats and try them on. The hats are very delicate and you need her help. Also bring what you will be wearing the hat with. It is even wonderful that my hat fit perfectly because I had my own personal fitting with a Milliner--Thanks so much Paula. Holly was also there with her gracious and welcoming smile. The Hat Box is a wonderful store. There are hats for everyone and then there are "hats". Many of the hats are made there by the owner and cost more than many lookie-loo's are willing to spend. I saw people come in and carelessly grab at hats that were handmade and cost a pretty penny. If those people thought about anything besides their own valueless selves, they wouldn't crucify the hard working woman in their self-serving rants of crappy reviews. I'm a huge fan of Paula as you can see. She helped me color coordinate some of my looks and she even gave me a tip on my black and white striped dress which are the same shades that she has on the hat box when you purchase her signature hat! She has a tough, but motherly New Yorker personality that some may find off putting if you don't understand her style. I'm from the east coast so I felt at home in her beautiful shop. She has the best hat in SoCal and maybe even all of Cali. I went down to San Diego and even BH to find a good sun hat for my yachting and modeling lifestyle, but after looking for a few months I tried The Hat Box and didn't have to look any further. It became my go-to shop for hats. Paula has every color you can think of - if it's not in stock - she can custom make it! These are the nicest quality hats I've ever worn. Their hats are beautiful but their Customer Service is horrible. Prior to walking into the store, i asked if i could bring my (5lb) dog into the store. They happily said yes. I've been looking for a straw hat and i finally found on i liked. Then all of the sudden, the older lady freaked out that my dog tracked in wet footprints and went on to complain that she will have to clean it up. She then continued to complained LOUDLY to the other women how she has to go get the mop. It was so disrespectful so I put down the hat and promptly walked out. Absolutely horrible. I have been looking for a quality hand made panama hat for several years to replace my old one. Just happened to poke my head in as I have done in every hat shop I stumble across in my travels. Usually I am disappointed and find cheap wannabe fake factory made in china hats. This time I hit the jackpot. I was very fortunate to run into Paula the spunky proprietor. Her family has been in the hat business since my grandpa was a pup. She had a wonderful selection of quality hand woven panama hats and helped me to find a great hat. She steamed the brim down and adjusted the fit for me. I'm pretty sure I almost got a ruler across the knuckles for grabbing the hat by the crown. Thank you Paula. You have all my love and respect. Yelp 100 Challenge 2016 - Review 21 of 100... This is a cute little hat shop in the lovely section of PCH that seems to feature uber stylish boutiques and cute eateries. I was curious to take my hat-finding adventures to another county - I still have more in LA to explore - but, since I work in OC, I thought it'd be nice to take a "lunch break" and see what toppers OC potentially has for me. Though this store is located on a major highway (number one, baby!), I have been able to find metered street parking either directly on PCH or non-metered parking on the residential side street just south of the store (watch the signs!). The lady who helped me (I believe she is the owner) is very sweet and is easy to talk to. I had a very particular event in mind for which I wanted this hat, but I wanted something I could wear often. She has some extended sizes and was very knowledgeable about the stylists she carried and which brands run larger or smaller. I ended up leaving with a fedora made out of paper that has served me well. I do, however, prefer a sturdier fabric because I'm rough. The only reason I am not giving this store a higher rating is because this hat store tends to cater to female styles. I tend to flock to "little old man" styles of hats... they seem to work for me! I like the flat cap / paperboy family and more masculine fedoras. If you are in the area and like hats, it's definitely worth checking out... I know I will when I can! read more

Wish I'd checked the older reviews before visiting. Owner absolutely treated us with contempt, assumed everything in the store was too expensive for us, and very reluctantly answered questions my mother had. I left the store while they were speaking. It's was astonishing to me. I am vacationing in Laguna Beach - trust and believe your little $500 creations are not out of my price range. Perhaps you should charge admission to your hat museum if you don't wish to interact with the general public or treat every person equally as a potential customer. My review is not in the selection of hats. My review is for the horrible way we were treated while being in this store. We are a mid thirties couple with 3 young kids. We are on vacation and my older boys (7 and 5) wanted to get flat caps like their grandpa (who was also with us). There were two older women working and NO ONE ELSE who could be bothered by or rambunctious, but still respectful kiddos. I didn't realize the blonde woman even worked there until we had been in for quite some time since she stared at all of us from a distance with a look of disgust on her face. Seriously, like the witch in witches when they smell children. The other woman was on us like a hawk, not asking if we needed help, just trailing us frantically like we were going to steal something and also like we were a HUGE inconvenience to her. My boys found ADULT hats that were over $40 each that they loved and my dad reluctantly bought them for them to make THEM happy. Otherwise, there's no way he would've given any business to this place. The grandparents took the kids out while my husband and I were still looking. Brunette lady, a little more helpful, but still put out kept on us. Like I said, they have a good selection and he ended up buying a $250+ Stetson. She put this beautiful/expensive hat in a crappy bag and I had to ask for a travel box. AGAIN, acting put out, she got the original box (square with no way to carry it easily) and sent us on our way. This happened last week and every time I see that box, I get angry thinking about the way we were treated as PAYING CUSTOMERS! We really wanted to go to a place in LA but decided to give this place a shot. Had I known, we would've taken the extra drive to a place that values their customers. My husband loves getting special hats while on vacation and we will NEVER come back to this place and we will also advise others to go somewhere else. Welcome to 2019. Unique clothing stores like this are hard to find. The Hat Box has an excellent collection of high quality men's and women's hats. They are extremely well made and includes some that are perfect for a Derby or English Wedding. The prices are reasonable for men's hats and and maybe a little premium for women's but I think worth it. They are meticulous about taking care of the hats so if you are coming in straight off the beach where sweat, sunscreen and sand may damage the wares they are polite but not excited (in fairness all this really does ruin the hats). If you want a memorable piece of attire this is the place to get it. read more

I was very pleased with my experience here. I was greeted by a very friendly, yet professional young lady immediately upon entering & saw she was attentive with all the customers. She was really positive and nice to talk with, sharing her enthusiasm working there as well as knowledge about their selection & being willing to assist me with any questions. Later, the owner came in & she was similarly super helpful! Sometimes shopkeepers can become disgruntled when you try on a lot of things, but she didn't mind it at all & gave me tips on how to easily secure my hat if it's windy & pack it when I go traveling. The store is so well-kept and laid out & has many cute, unique mirrors all-around. I just loved the location & the beautiful ocean views you can see from the store. As much as the inventory was lovely, there was a huge lack of customer service. This shop is a perfect example of why artisans of a craft should not necessarily sell their work. I felt like Pretty Woman. The owner of the shop and producer of these hats looked me and my friend up and down and assumed that we didn't have the budget to afford her high end hats. She even had the audacity to pit back a fascinator we told her that we would purchase and did purchase. She focused on certain items being "high end" and over $400. To her knowledge, out of our budget. She didn't know that I'm a surgical assistant and my friend a high end lumber rep. When we moved forward to purchase our fascinator, she paid no attention that it was the display and significantly frayed. Me having retail experience, I asked for a new one, which she brought, thought her face obviously annoyed. The hats were lovely but our shopping experience was horrible and insulting. Love this place and the lady that owns the place (Paula) is extremely knowledgeable about her industry. From Pork Pie's to Diamond-Crowns to Derbies, Apple Caps, Newsboys and Fedoras, even custom pieces like amazing Bram Stoker meets Slash top hats -- Paula has done it all, and if she hasn't, she's not afraid to get you exactly what you want. Is your head an in-between size? No probbles. She's got a hat stretcher behind the counter. This little boutique has its bases covered. Came in about a month ago with mom and pops and she walked us through her collection (which is ever-changing) and showed us some of the expensive fur pieces she has behind the counter. Definitely stop in, if even for the knowledge, she's definitely been around and knows her business. Prices are commensurate with the type of hat you're looking for -- grade and quality, maybe a little PCH in Laguna thrown in to help pay the bills, but not much :) Love! Oh, saw that someone was upset you could't take pics in the store... Came in to the store today as a part of a bachelorette party with the intent of purchasing hats for Christmas gifts, but the sales lady spoke to the group in a very condescending manner and acted like we did not belong. This store is so much fun and has tons of selection. If Paula doesn't have what you're looking for just ask her and she'll see if she can get it or make it for you. Prices on her hand made hats range from $300 up and come with a hat box so you can keep your piece of art in tip top shape! She also has a range of hats made elsewhere (some handmade but not by her) that are more friendly on the wallet for folks like me who haven't quite worked up to the gorgeous expensive hats. When we walked in Paula was helping some other customers but moved her way through each group and took her time with us once she got to us explaining the different materials and countries of origin and answering all of our questions. Also, a group of 3 girls (early 20s) were in the store when we walked in, trying on different hats in the mirror and Paula had no issue with them taking pictures so maybe she's changed her policy from the other review. My husband loves a good fedora and I love a good hat, but having an odd shaped head has always made it difficult for me to buy a one-size fits all style that you find in most of the big box department stores. When strolling through Laguna Beach we came upon The Hat Box and knew we would have to stop in at least once before we left. They have hats of a wide variety: style, shape, color, size and even price. I could easily spend an hour in here trying on hats. Didn't know about the no photo policy (which I totally understand) so I'm glad I didn't take a snap of the fascinators I tried on.
