This hole in the wall bar on a quiet side street off of rue de Lancry deserves a little detour…read more It's barely the size of someone's living room but what it lacks in size it packs in coziness and an intimate neighborhoody vibe. We stopped in by chance a few weeks ago while searching for a comfortable place to watch a World Cup match with a toddler in tow. Le Play caught our eye with its large Happy Hours sign on the outside and a fun interior with two large screens and literally no one (but the barman) inside. We settled into a spacious couch and ordered some drinks. I ordered a Vodka Martini even though it wasn't on the menu (when will I learn?!) and despite asking for barley a drop of Vermouth it was way too heavy on the Vermouth than I like, but I don't fault the barman as he was clearly doing his best to please and the serving was generous enough to last the whole match. There are many more cocktails to try and a great list of beers as well. While it's certainly not your hipster bar, I totally dug the vibe and friendliness of the staff and off the beaten path location and would gladly go back, even without a game going on.

We were drawn in by the promise of beer (a somewhat rarity in Paris) and happy hour pricing. The husband was pleased as punch to find that they served true Irish Guinness on tap. I was less than pleased with my weird order of some kind of beer and orange liqueur mixture..... ugh, this thing was bad. The bartended didn't speak any English (not that she should, but it did make it more difficult as a tourist). Beers were on the pricy side, especially when it wasn't happy hour. They did have cool bathrooms (with a picture of a dog wearing 3D glasses in the ladies room!). It wouldn't be my top choice in the area.

Go see for yourselves. We liked it so much. It was our planned stop in route to Moulin Rouge, and that proved to us that we just had to bring our tribe with us on the way back. That's right. But as the evening went on, more people slowly wandered in and the atmosphere picked up. The drinks were fantastic: huge, strong, colorful, and dangerously fun. Exactly what you want from a tiki bar. The bartenders were incredibly sweet too. They answered all our questions, made recommendations based on what we actually like, and clearly knew their menu well. Always appreciate bartenders who don't just point randomly and say "this one." The decor and vibe were awesome -- dark, tropical, quirky, and full-on escapism. Felt like stepping into a hidden island bar in the middle of Paris. Only thing that threw us a little? The music. At several points it sounded less "tropical tiki escape" and more "waiting 45 minutes for Space Mountain at Disney World." Not bad exactly... just unexpectedly wholesome for drinks strong enough to make you text your high school friends at midnight. Overall though, we absolutely loved it and would 100% go back. Great drinks, great staff, fun atmosphere -- and honestly the weird Disney-adjacent soundtrack somehow became part of the charm.
