SECURITY TEAM ASSAULTS WOMEN As we were leaving the bar, one of their security guys shoved my friend to the ground and punched him in the face for absolutely zero reason. My friend was covered in blood, and we called the cops to report the assault. After the cops left, two different security guards (and their two friends who weren't security but just hanging out with them outside of the bar?!) picked up two of my girl friends by the shoulders and slammed them down on the concrete and got on top of them. (Both girls are 5'2 or under and did absolutely nothing to warrant the assault, and having 4 guys slam each of them to the ground was insane). The security team was also picking a fight with someone as we entered, and we didn't think anything of it until they decided to pick a fight with us. Every single person on the security team deserves to be fired for being a bystander as their coworkers assaulted one guy and two girls for no reason. It was actually the worst experience we've ever had. If you come here, you might have to fight for your life and watch girls get assaulted by the security team. read more

There are several floors and even though it was crowded-there was plenty of room to dance and there were several DJs. What was nice was that I requested that the DJ announce "Happy Birthday" over the sound system for my friend and played her favorite song twice which was really, really nice. I did an open bar deal with a large group for my birthday. It was wonderful! The staff was all very friendly and professional.

Came here on a Saturday night with one of my buddies. Safe to say I will never be coming here again. My friend and I reluctantly paid the $20 cover and entered. He walked in no problem, and I trailed closely behind. But what happened next to me was easily the weirdest encounter I have ever had in any bar/club Upon walking in, I was IMMEDIATELY shoved by one of the bouncers behind the door wearing a backwards hat. Keep in mind, I had not spoken a single word to anyone let alone looked at anyone. The bouncer came right up in my face and started yelling about something (who knows what?) My fight or flight reaction kicked in, and I forcefully removed the bouncers hands off me, as he was right in my face and I felt threatened. He did not like this, and proceeded to physically pick me up and bring me out of the bar. This all happened within 10 seconds of showing up I am a non-confrontational person by nature and don't like disagreement. The last thing I am looking for on a Saturday night is a quarrel with some power hungry bouncer looking to spoil peoples fun, but that is unfortunately what I got. My reasoning behind why I believe I was shoved was because the bouncer was looking to take advantage of me. Having just paid the $20 cover fee, they had gotten all they needed from me and we're ready to kick me out. Having shown up with a friend too, he wasn't going to leave without me, so it was a quick $40 for the hangge-upp Don't make the mistake I did and please read the other reviews on here and google reviews before coming. Many other people have complained about the overly aggressive bouncers (especially recently). A single one star review can be considered an outlier, but when there are multiple people saying virtually the same thing, that should tell you something. BEWARE THIS PLACE ABSOLUTELY SUCKS. EMPLOYEES OF THIS ESTABLISHMENT ARE AGGRESSIVE, CONFRONTATIONAL AND UNAPOLOGETICALLY HOMOPHOBIC. A large group of friends and I arrived on a Saturday night - paid $10 cover fees, reluctantly hid our coats in dark, sticky corners of the bar since there was no coat check or available hooks, got served standard dive bar drinks and watched ourselves dance on gimmicky screens of dance floor shenanigans. That part was ok. At some point in evening, a bouncer/security personnel approached me on the dance floor and went out of his way to compliment my outfit. I said thank you and moved on. It was a good outfit, but I already knew that without him telling me. THIS IS WHERE IT GETS UGLY.....our group then moved downstairs to basement area where there was another dance area. It was very hot in the crowd of people on the dance floor, and my two male friends removed their sweaters so they could move more freely and comfortably on the dance floor in tank tops. The same bouncer then approached me AGAIN and told me to tell my friends to "put their shirts back on." For the record, they had shirts on. Tank tops are shirts. ALSO WHY WAS THIS BOUNCER SO CONCERNED ABOUT EVERYONE'S OUTFITS???? My own outfit that he had gone out of his way to compliment earlier in the evening had far less coverage than my male counterparts in their tank tops. I was taken aback with the request and explained to him that it was very hot and politely inquired why I was allowed to show just as much skin if not more as a female patron but my male friends were not - please see attached photo of the outfits in question captured moments before this incident went down. The bouncer proceeded to get incredibly aggressive with our group in an instant, got in my male friends' faces, demanded that they "put their shirts back on" in a raised voice repeatedly and then threatened to BEAT THEM UP if they didn't comply. I can not stress how quickly this situation escalated....over tank tops. We decided to leave the establishment right then and there as we didn't want any part of this man's toxicity and aggression. The place sucked anyway. I closed our tab and reported the incident to a female bartender upstairs who proceeded to explain to me that the bar "has a strict dress code for men." YEAH, A DOUBLE STANDARD HOMOPHOBIC DRESS CODE THAT YOU IMPLEMENT TO EXCUSE YOUR EMPLOYEE'S THREATENING AND AGGRESSIVE BEHAVIOR TOWARDS CERTAIN PATRONS!!!! The bouncer then followed our group outside after we politely excused ourselves from the bar and SHOVED MY MALE FRIEND AGAINST A WALL where other bouncers seemed to want to get involved enthusiastically with zero context of situation. Female members of our group were forced to intervene on our male friend's behalf as this mob of grown men physically loomed over and around us continuing to threaten physical violence. The situation was ultimately diffused by us, the patrons. We will never return, and you should not either. My friends and I felt incredibly unsafe here at the hands of their employees, and I am honestly shocked that the whole incident didn't erupt into something far more violent. Very toxic vibe. The bouncers here are a nightmare. They let a bunch of girls in for free and tried to charge the guys $40, saying $20 was for them and $20 for the business. This happened at 12:45am on Saturday night, August 15 (early morning). After I refused the bouncers all proceeded to ridicule me and my friends for the price(?) of shoes and clothing we were wearing. Went here with my friends around 11 pm. After a while, noticed a man on his own stalking and leering over women in a creepy way. My friends all noticed as well. After observing him standing behind one woman specifically for a while, I decided to report him. I went outside to the bouncers/security to discretely report him for my safety. Later, I learned a male friend of mine was taken away by the security team to confirm the man's identity and confirm my story of his actions. "Do you think xxx guy was being 'creepy'"? I went here for my 30th birthday -- a true Chicago staple. We have been here a number of times, and always had a blast, but something happened this time that warranted a review. It was late and we wanted some water to balance out the alcohol. My husband went to the bar to ask for two cups of water, but was told "we get in trouble for giving cups of water, management makes us sell bottles which are $2.50 each." This is not only incredibly poor customer service, but also dangerous. For an establishment that sells that much alcohol, they should be providing water for free to their patrons. I was very disappointed that they were prioritizing a bit of profit (they make plenty) over the safety of customers. read more

The reasons being as follows. 1) POPULARITY:this bar is only popular because out of towners or visitors tend to go there because they don't know where else to go. (There are plenty of late night bars in Chicago or near by- also of much higher quality.) 2) AGE- seems to be mostly 20-24 year olds. Stay away from this bar unless you want trouble. Last weekend one of the bouncers kicked me and my girlfriend out because she wouldn't dance with him. We left peacefully, but the bouncer was furious. We went outside and then the bouncer hit her in the face, open palm, but she still went down to the ground. I was the victim of a homophobic attack at this bar - and the turn of the screw was that it was at the hands of the staff. I came to this bar with friends from college, only because it was a stones throw from our hotel. We were a large group, maybe fifteen people. We bought drinks, tipped well, danced a lot - the kind of patrons a bar usually asks for. When my boyfriend and I began to dance together, a bouncer wearing glasses began to get uncomfortably close to us, shoving his way between us to move across the bar. We assumed it wasn't intentional. Then we both took our sweaters off, just wearing tank tops. We were told to put our sweaters back on. We asked why - and we were told that we'd be BEAT UP if we didn't comply. I want to stress that the situation escalated SO QUICKLY, and it feels very confusing and violating to be threatened with physical violence for seemingly no reason. We were escorted out of the bar, the bouncer shoved my boyfriend into a wall for asking for an explanation, and my girlfriends were left to intervene on our behalf - I worry for my life if they weren't there. It's 2022 - Chicago is a major metropolitan city. If you are queer, please beware: this bar is dangerous. Shame on you, Chicago. read more

I give it 3 stars, cause sadly I ended up there of my own volition. That being said, if you happen to stumble into Hangge Uppe, it's either a) you lost a bet, b) you are a tourist and someone played a prank on you, c) you truly enjoy shitty music and bad drinks. The Uppe is the type of place where you need a penicillin shot the next morning. The place is filthy, the decor hasn't been changed in 20+ years, and the bar staff use plastic cups for shakers to mix their drinks. I was hammered, but from what I recall not even the beer goggles could make this place attractive.
