It's been a very, very long time since I'd been in a restaurant in this poor of a condition. I'm afraid to see what their health report score is. The bathrooms...ugggh. We'll, at least the men's side. Prices are high too!!! 6 bucks for an order of onion rings that when delivered had a number of rings that weren't separated so it was basically a fried ball or clump of onions. 6 dollars for a cheeseburger. It's in tabor and off the beaten path, so yeah its patronized by the locals. Basically, the place needs torn down and simply rebuilt. Wifi? Lol. Yeah right. I will say, the staff was friendly enougj enough, but thats hardly worth overlooking all of Coleman's other issues.

We have watched this place slowly take shape in a previous roadside store that had been deserted for a while. We finally decided to stop and try the BBQ. As a seasoned traveler (45 states and 31 countries) and a born North Carolinian, I am particular and selective about my BBQ. I have had clients in Memphis, Kansas City and Dallas for many years, so my taste are finely tuned to regional BBQ. So,I am a little apprehensive when Chris, the purveyor of this product, turns out to be a Snow Belt Refugee from New York..Flatbush Brooklyn in fact. Ok...I want to be open-minded to the possibilities of a Rust Belt Migrant making BBQ in NC, long recognized for its regional contributions of Carolina-styled BBQ, a tart collection consistently of a vinegar-based pulled-pork heap. I ordered the Tacos, three of brisket and three of pulled pork, coleslaw, a creamed corn blend, topped off with a serving of banana pudding. My final assessment...great BBQ. The blue tortilla shells cradled a mix of meat with onions, cilantro, and possible Pico. The coleslaw was yummy but not Carolina-style..however, worthy of consumption. The sweet corn blend was absolutely fabulous and would solict a return trip by itself. It was chunky morsels bathed in a cheesy sauce. As others pointed out, the banana pudding will become a signature dessert on its own. Well, Chris, the hole-in-the-wall will earn a worthy reputation indeed and welcome to North Carolina.

The location has a large parking lot, which makes parking very easy. When I entered the store, all of the main display cases were completely empty. I wasn't sure what selection I'd find two hours before closing, but I was expecting at least a few options on display. Thankfully, I spotted a separate upper case that still held three sweet items: a Giant Pecan Turtle, a Honey & Fig Scone and a NY Style Crumbcake, so I ordered those. I would have ordered more if anything was left in the cases. I also ordered a Pink Starburst drink, but I'm pretty sure I was given a Peachy Sunrise by mistake, since it tasted like peach and had cream in it. Unfortunately, I didn't pay close enough attention to it while there or taste it. This may be a great bakery if you go earlier in the day. However, I'm not sure why they pulled all the remaining items to the back so soon. I saw many trays of items in the kitchen, and the staff appeared to be putting their contents into boxes, maybe for donation?

First visit: Chris's Midtown Café in Chadbourn, North Carolina, is absolutely worth a stop. There's a convenient parking lot right out front, along with plenty of street parking. The moment you walk in, you're greeted by a clean, welcoming space and friendly smiles that set the tone for a great visit. Inside, there's an ice cream counter featuring some unique flavors -- one that really stood out was grape. I'd never tried grape ice cream before, but it was phenomenal. The café also includes a coffee and bakery section called The Sweet Spot, where they're planning to add even more treats in the coming weeks. I'm already looking forward to stopping back by to see what's new. Beyond sweets, the café offers a full menu of savory, home-style favorites, including fried pork chops and a hot bar serving hearty, home-cooked meals. I went with the cheeseburger topped with their homemade chili, and it was perfection -- exactly how a burger should be: juicy, flavorful, and downright delicious. Second visit (breakfast stop): I happened to drive by one morning and saw they were open. I had a little time, so I turned around and went back -- and I'm glad I did. I ordered a bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich and it was excellent. The bread was fluffy and fresh, the bacon was thick and substantial -- not that thin little pancake-house bacon -- and the egg was cooked perfectly. Everything came together just right. You can definitely put them on your radar for a quick breakfast stop, too. Pro tip: call ahead and they'll have it ready when you get there. If you're ever passing through Chadbourn -- especially if you're headed toward Myrtle Beach -- do yourself a favor and stop at Chris's Midtown Café. Easy to pull in, great food, friendly atmosphere, and you'll leave satisfied.
