Stumbled across this restaurant on a trip to St Louis, and we're glad we stopped. The first thing to catch the eye is a long glass-front counter full of delightful-looking desserts. The restaurant is obviously a local favorite spot as many other patrons were greeted by name by staff or other diners. We seated ourselves in a booth, of which circles the rest of the room with several tables down the middle. Service was quick, sweet tea for me, not often found in Illinois dining, but perfectly done for this southern girl. Hubby was just as happy with his unsweet tea. The homemade vegetable soup was warm, thick with vegetables, even some cabbage, midst the creamy broth. My hand-presses cheeseburger was as delectable as any, and would have been perfect if tomatoes were in season and carried more flavor. But the lettuce was crisp, the onion sharp, and the pickles crunchy. Hubby has a tossed salad and the catfish dinner. The fish was cooked in cornmeal, a real "down home" dish, plenty of it and plenty of flavor. Hush puppies were delicious, but not enough of them. Then, we both ordered dessert even though we knew we couldn't finish them: strawberry cake and a lemon crème pie. Out of this world! The price was reasonable for the excellent food and service, even in these days of austerity. We definitely intend to return to The Grille! read more

We stopped at The Grille in Mount Vernon, IL while traveling to Nashville with family. My wife and I tried the Wisconsin Burger with green beans and the Chicken Cordon Bleu Sandwich with cottage cheese. The food was just okay and nothing really stood out as being particularly amazing. The service was great, and the atmosphere was homey and welcoming. It felt like a comfortable local spot where you can sit down and have a straightforward meal without any fuss. Given the limited restaurant options in Mount Vernon, The Grille definitely gets the job done. I wouldn't go out of my way to return, but if you're in town and looking for a solid place to grab a meal, it's a great option! read more

Stopped in for lunch coming from Kansas City to Louisville. Good choice. I was leaning toward the Gyro sandwich or catfish. The server suggested the Wisconsin burger. I got that. Oh my was it good. Great breakfast! Coffee was good and they even have hot tea with lemon and honey. The hot water came in a little teapot so it made a few cups. We both had omelettes and they were terrific. I had a Veggie omelette with cheddar cheese. My hubby had a sausage and cheese omelette with jalapenos. I asked for crispy hash browns and they were crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside which was perfect! They serve real butter packets with their pancakes too, not the whipped spread fake stuff! It was busy but the servers were attentive for coffee refills. read more

Food was ok service was welllll they were exceptionally friendly, so there's that! But we were given our food way out of order it was so awkward. Salad first, appetizers, then soup, then meal :/ But all the food came out super fast! Wish I could say the same for the check. Multiple times trying to get the server's attention to no avail. Took 10 minutes to get our food and 35 minutes to get our check Food was ok though. The restaurant itself is really cute and the decor has a nice farmhouse feel to it. You can tell it's a lot of locals, which we are not lol. If I was traveling through and needing something to eat, I think we'd stop here again. Start by saying it's a very clean and friendly restaurant. The minute we walked in we were greeted with a smile and a warm hello. We were told to sit wherever and they would be right with us. As soon as we were seated they brought water and took our drink order. We ordered toasted ravioli and a jumbo shrimp dinner with fries and potato soup. Everything was well prepared, hot and served quickly. I thought the amount of food for the price was reasonable. I would have loved to try their desserts they had a case full but I was too full! What a great little place. The service was excellent! We loved our chicken noodle and taco soups. The catfish was excellent. Very high quality. The hush puppies were surprisingly tasty. Stopped while driving through on the interstate. Not fast food fast, but definitely better for than fast food!. The reuban is made with thick cut corned beef. Good variety on the menu. Service was very friendly. Not fancy gourmet-- but very tasty with fair prices and good sized servings. We gave into temptation and tried dessert-coconut cream pie and a chocolate canoli cake. I was very pleased to be able to support this establishment. Service was friendly & very prompt, despite being busy (great sign!). Nice clean atmosphere. You could tell the customers were faithful regulars because the staff knew their names and were very personable with them. The owner was present and expressed her gratitude to each customer. I had the chicken cordon blue, which was very good. I overheard other customers say they enjoyed their meal as well. Stopped in bc it had the most stars in the area....have no idea why! Cheese curds were normal cheese curds. Gyro sandwich had to be the worst gyro I have ever had. It was definitely packaged strips of meat they tossed on the flat top to warm up. If you are a gyro person, stay far away. Fried cod dinner was ok. I had the bacon cheese burger and my wife had the chicken wrap. Both meals had a choice of sides. We chose fries. Both meals were very filling and my wife took home half of the wrap. the burger was great and came with pickles, lettuce, onions, and tomato on the side. I chose Swiss cheese. The burger was cooked well and had good flavor. My wife said the wrap was delicious. The fries were awesome!! They were busy and the service was good. Wait staff was friendly. Stopped in here for a meal during a long drive. Was really hoping that they served breakfast all day, but they don't. So, lookin' at the lunch menu was pretty uninspiring. On our way back home on Interstate 57 we looked at Yelp for a good review for someplace better to eat rather than the fast food joints advertised along the way. We're happy with our choice of eating at the Grille. The service was fast and friendly and the food was fresh and delicious. This place is one of the only local restaurants on a long stretch of empty interstate, which is how we ended up here! Looked a little sketchy on the outside but cute inside and wide selection on the menu. Service was great and quick. Food was delicious as well! Update: It's my first time back since COVID-19. I was happy to see social distancing, a lot of sanitizing, and the wait staff wore their masks PROPERLY (no noses hanging over the mask. Don't people realize that those two holes in their face are connected?) This region is riddled with scofflaws who think masks make you sick. (Ignorance gone to seed!) I started with the Wisconsin cheese curds. Purely delicious, and a very generous portion. (I took half of them home) The house salad (I asked for no cheese) was good and fresh too. Then I tried my favorite--cod, but BROILED this time...and...pure heaven. Tasty, flakey, and mild, just the way I like it. I didn't care for the corn on the cob, tho. (Never have liked frozen corn on the cob, since it gets mushy). But that was a very small thing. I had plenty To enjoy--including some drawn butter for my broiled cod! Yum. Even the attention to the presentation was good--definitely unusual in the restaurants in this town! Oh. And I finished it off with about three bites of Celebration cheesecake pie (and took the rest home)! Good stuff. No wonder the Grill is the number one listing on Yelp! read more

I had never had beer battered fries before. They were good, but not my style. The service was good, very friendly. I had the roast beef patty melt and it was a loose meat roast beef. I liked that, but the meat was a little chewy and the cheese choice a little savory for my taste. We happened upon this place on a road trip through the southern part of Illinois. We decided to give it a try after reading the reviews on Yelp. First of all, we were greeted at the door with fantastic customer service immediately. We ordered food to go, and it was packed (and labeled!) with care. We were offered ketchup, mustard, napkins, and utensils. We ordered two cheeseburger kids meals and the kids raved about the French fries. At first sight, they thought the meals were small. After eating the burger, my son commented about how big the patty actually was. We ordered The Cowboy Chicken sandwich--everything on this sandwich just worked together. High quality chicken that was seasoned well. The bbq sauce just lit up my mouth! The onion rings had a nice crunch and the mozzarella cheese just topped it off. Each bite was better than the last bite, and unfortunately it was then all gone. The alpine chicken sandwich was fantastic as well. The cheese on top was super melted, which was fantastic for blending with the mushrooms. The chicken was real chicken--fantastic spice! We were offered refills on our drinks even though we weren't dining in. The sweet tea is super fresh! We would happily visit here again!
