This is hands-down, our favorite Thai restaurant. During Covid in 2020, I saw a facebook post that they were struggling to stay in business. They offered curbside pickup and my neighbor asked if I'd pick up something for her after she had surgery. So I decided to give them a shot. My kids and I hadn't had Thai food often, so we found the description on their online menu extremely helpful. The food was excellent, and we all got to try new things we loved. But what impressed me was the genuine friendliness of the owners. Dirk is always welcoming, and makes sure the customers are happy. I dont think I've ever met his wife, as she's always so hard at work in the kitchen. Even on mothers day she works nonstop to keep up with demand. (Business is booming now, thankfully!) They value their employees and occasionally close to celebrate them, and sometimes to attend their childrens' school events, which i think is great. As if Green Papaya wasn't already an amazing restaurant, Dirk has now brought chocolate from Belgium and started a chocolate shop within the restaurant. I went there today for some Easter gifts and couldn't resist picking up some fried ice cream and mango sticky rice. read more

I've eaten here 3 times. The duck dishes are excellent. Sauce in Crispy Duck is mild. Everyone can eat it. Basil Duck has more flavor. The Papaya Salad Laos was VERY VERY salty, as in "not edible salty." I threw it out after 2 bites. If you have high blood pressure, don't eat this. I've had this before in a Loatian restaurant, and it's usually not this salty. I think it may have been prepared incorrectly. Double salted by accident? That's the only explanation I can think of. I hope they fix it. Get the Thai version - it's milder. read more

A local Thai spot with overall solid food and friendly service. We came to Green Papaya on a Saturday evening as they opened for dinner (they close between lunch and dinner service). It has some hometown charm with a relatively large menu. We enjoyed the pad woon sen (flavorful), tamarind duck (crispy), fried rice, vegetable soup (healthy and nice broth that wasn't too salty), and lemongrass stir fry with tofu. The entrees are about $16-20 each. The sauce for the pad thai wasn't our favorite and tasted a bit too sweet. We also enjoyed the crispy spring rolls with taro and nonsteamed spring rolls. We would pass on the hot tea next time as it was just a regular tea bag. Service was welcoming. The space looks like a small two-story home with a few tables inside. Reservations are probably necessary since the place isn't big. They have a private parking lot so finding a spot is easy. Since it's on a busy road, making a left turn leaving can be a pain. read more

I love Thai food (I may be biased since I am half Thai lol). This Thai spot is near me and I drive by it all the time; I've been meaning to try it out. I love that it's in a historic house, parking was spacious and on the side of the house. I follow their social media and see their presence online; they seem nice and the food looked great. My family and I ordered takeout. I had the chicken pad Thai. I really wanted to like it but it was underwhelming and bland. The noodles were drier than other pad Thai noodles I've had and lacked any color; and I've had my fair share, it's one of my favorite meals. Also, the prices compared to other Thai restaurants nearby were higher. The Belgian chocolate mousse dessert was perfect though. I had a taste of my husband's green curry chicken and it was good, I liked it better than the pad Thai; however, there was very little chicken in it. This time I also tried their Shu mai and drunken noodle, both of which were delicious. But the chicken and rice was heavenly! The chicken was tender and rice was flavorful. I've driven by a million times and have wanted to stop here, but just hadn't gotten there yet. My son wanted to try something new and this is what he chose for his birthday. It's colorful and decorated authentically. We were greeted pleasantly and ordered some appetizers. They were all fresh, flavorful and yummy! My son and I quite enjoyed the lemongrass chicken the most. My son had the crispy duck for an entree, which he loved, took the rest home since we ordered so many apps. He loved it just as much the next day cold! I had the stir fry basil, it was spicy and well made, we both had sticky rice which was done perfectly! I received a gift card to The Green Papaya from some clients and I'm so grateful they introduced us to them! I really enjoy their Crispy Chicken Pad Thai, but I think my favorite thing to order is their Crab Rangoon. They're always crunchy on the outside, delicious and gooey on the inside with the delicious sweet chili sauce. I have a soy & MSG allergy and I'm so thankful to finally have a place that serves "safe" Crab Rangoon. Aside from the food that never disappoints, the service is always wonderful. The restaurant is usually packed with locals, so the wait can sometimes be long. But the staff are so warm and friendly that it makes it all worth it. Their restaurant is in an antique house, which makes it even more charming. We haven't made it in for dine-in service yet, but we have heard rave reviews about the experience. read more

So 10+ years after my first review, I went back again (first time inside in 2 years) and remembered yet again why this place rocks. Service was friendly and helpful. It's in an old house so you feel like you're at a friends house for dinner. The food remains adventuresome and still highly consistent. The curry puffs are an excellent example of some familiar yet fresh. The lettuce cups were a surprise given that I've ordered larb from here and I dare say we enjoyed the chicken lettuce cups even more. Pad Thai is a standard yet it is really done to perfection here and is far better dined in than take out. But the surprise was a northern Thai dish I haven't seen on the menu anywhere in CT. Geang hung lae is a stew with curry paste and powder, tamarind, potatoes onion and your choice of protein plus many other flavors. It's as unique a dish as I've had in a while. Loved it too. So my husband made reservations for Valentine's Day. We had a bit of a wait because they were short staffed. We were told to look on our phones for menu because they were short menus. When we started ordering, our waiter proceeded to tell us that all chicken dishes were scarce because their shipment didn't come in. I had to order some other protein. Took FOREVER to get food (1.5hrs). The Green papaya salad was delicious though. Main courses were just meh. My husband got Crispy Chicken Pad Thai which looked and tastes like chicken tenders and noodles.(this dish was the exception on the chicken issue!). Took so long that we didn't even consider dessert since we were there for almost two hours. Nothing special at all. They need to get food that is on menu, more staff and quicker table service. Came here on a date with my partner.. it's a cute little place. You walk in and it gives you that homey type feel and vibe. Because of the ordinances in canton, the signage isn't quite noticeable.. parking is in the side/ rear of building. It's a cute married couple that run the place. The husband is the front of house/ host/ waiter and the wife is the cook. I ordered the Tiger Cry. Steak was cooked beautifully , so tender and flavorful, and with the dipping sauce it was sweet, savory, and a little spicy. The food was extraordinary! Unfortunately we arrived a few minutes before they were closing for the evening, so they gave us an opportunity to get take out. We had TomYar soup, very yummy! This is one of the nicest business I've been to, the service was amazing and the owner was very personable/ nice. Absolutely amazing! We ordered drunken noodles with chicken and fried ice cream. The drunken noodles were a bit sweet, but still a little bit spicy. Our fried ice cream was coconut flavored, and wow!!! The breading was crispy, warm, and fluffy. The coconut ice cream on the inside was creamy, flavorful, and absolutely delicious. This place is a gem. Well-priced, really authentic Thai/Laotian food. The owner does it all, and he is always so pleasant and kind. The food is really good, and it has that homemade vibe (not excessively greasy, salty, sweet, MSG). They have always been a really clean establishment too. We will always support this small business, and wish that it flourishes. Pad thai, pad see iew, pad woon sen, drunken noodles, thai fried rice are our favorites and constant reordered menus. The lunch menu is a really great price for the usual menus that are always 100%, so I would recommend to anyone they try something on the menu at lunch prices as a first time experience (Tuesday - Friday (11 am - 3 pm)). They are closed on Mondays! I've tried their red curry and panang curry, as well as their pad prik prow but didn't find it to be what I personally want/like but they were all fine dishes! The Green Papaya is a hidden gem! The food is absolutely delicious!! Not to mention the ingredients are so fresh! In our order we got Chicken Satay, Summer rolls, Lemon grass chicken and Pad Ka Prow-chicken. To get straight to it... We didn't even get pictures of the food because it smelt too good to stop before eating. The sauces for the chicken satay, lemon grass chicken and summer rolls are an added bonus to the food, which is already good enough on its own. The Pad Ka Prow chicken was exactly to my liking... although my partner found it to be a bit spicy - he thought it was too good not to eat. The prices are also very reasonable, especially for the amount of food you get. The service is excellent, and the staff are very kind and enthusiastic. The ambiance is also great! The walk in has different displays which you are able to purchase, and the seating is very cozy and comfortable. I highly recommend The Green Papaya to anyone looking for authentic Thai food. Stopped in for an early dinner last night and we had our choice of pretty much any table. By the time we left, the place was jam packed. As we sat down, we saw an intriguing sign on the wall announcing that as of Tuesday October 26, Green Papaya will be open at 6:00 AM for breakfast six days a week. They'll offer some Thai dishes with added fried eggs, and Asian themed omelets with rice instead of potatoes. Of course, if you want to order your lunch "to go" that's possible, in fact management is banking on a lot of that. Anyway, our food was excellent last night. Their soups consistently get high grades, and I really enjoyed my Tom Yum Soup- lots of chicken and lots of spice. We had an Asian Salad and a Papaya salad with chicken. I love the presentation here- they pay as much attention to detail on what a dish looks like as they do to what it tastes like.
