This place is a gem. I have been privileged to be a member here for three months, and I have to say, I can't decide if I am more excited about the climbs or about the people who are so passionate about climbing. So far I've been to Gravity Vault Chatham twice (with a third appointment this coming Sunday) and I've enjoyed it the both times I went. I signed up and reserved for a 1 hour staff belay session both of those times and really enjoyed it. I haven't rock climbed in years prior to coming here during quarantine, and there are many selections and the staff are very helpful. I especially enjoyed my session with Dave as he was really funny and encouraged my group to push our limits and climb to the top. As for COVID precautions, they have a occupancy limit of, i think, 75 people at a time so reservations have to be done beforehand and early if you want a specific date. Hand sanitizer is provided, and there are cubbies to put your shoes and small belongings before you climb. Masks are required at all times. All in all, I had a fun time and I'm looking forward to my next visit! read more

Go if you have no option but this place is a disappointment in terms of the route and the options. I could have given 2 stars but staffs have always been helpful so 1 added star. Back to the main thing, the handholds are always mixed up very confusingly between different similar colors, you could easily mistake one color for another. Bouldering and top-rope sections are small and boring. Route reset takes place even during peak traffic hours. Staffs are cold and unfriendly (I heard its a New Jersey thing). Size matters when it comes to climbing gyms. That's what I used to think before I visited Gravity Vault. At 13,000+ square feet as advertised on its website, this is the smallest climbing gym I have visited so far. However, it has certainly left me with a good impression. My friends and I decided to take a short trip from our usual stomping ground of BKB and headed out to New Jersey to check out this gym when we were told that the Buy-One-Get-One-Free deal on day passes would be honored even on this Columbus Day holiday. So instead of the usual $18, each of us only had to pay $9. I was initially impressed by the friendly staff who did the belay check. She pointed out to my friend that he was wearing his harness incorrectly and needed to put it over his T-shirt. She also reminded another friend that she needed to have a double loop for the safety knot on the rope. I thought that the staff's attention to these details is probably a good reflection of the gym's commitment to the safety of the climbers. Did I also mention that it's perfect for people who enjoy top-roping? It has over 45 stations and the lack of crowd makes waiting unnecessary. The routes were challenging (with a good number of them on 35-feet walls) and the grips were neither slippery nor fully covered with chalk dust. The bouldering area was one of the smaller ones I have seen. However, the routes were more difficult than they seemed and the wall allowed for top-out for multiple routes rated V3 and above. The only thing I would recommend to the owner is to put up more of those grading charts around the gym so that visiting climbers can see them more easily and determine the difficulty of the routes. With a team of friendly staff, a climbing space and a resting area that seem almost dust-free, and challenging routes, Gravity Vault is definitely a place I wouldn't mind revisiting. read more

Don't get discourage by the walls either because there was a young child, no more than 7 years of age that was scaling the walls like a pro. Plus studies show that people are more likely to fall for those around them in life & death situations ;) Went there with a Yelp group, class was hosted by a young gentleman, Aris, who knew his material without getting caught up in the jargon of climbing. They're open til 10pm on weekdays, not as late on weekends though. Beginners will probably only want to spend 1.5 to 2.5 hours there, before your arms or hands begin to get sore from lifting yourself, but it's a great way to challenge yourself or your friends in some exciting competition. I went here for my first time bouldering last week. Check their website before you go because there are special deals offered here, such as a "lady's night" discount. Prices aren't bad. I did have to rent shoes to climb, and they are a little thick, which I didn't really like. My boyfriend didn't like that they don't offer shoes for more aggressive climbers (i.e. their shoes are fairly flat). They have cubbies where you can leave your things, but there are also very spacious locker room where you can change and leave things (bring your own lock!). It doesn't appear that anyone really uses the locker rooms at all. They are very clean and empty. For general bouldering, they have a decent number of "paths" that you can take, but for me I found the problem to be that there weren't as many the "paths" designed for beginners (which is clearly what I am since I don't even know the lingo). They do have three or four thick mats that can be dragged to where you want to climb if you want additional padding. For a Wednesday night, it wasn't overly crowded, though more people did come as it got later (closer to 7-8pm). The people who come here are friendly; though it's not an overly chatty place, people will sometimes offer to give you pointers, which is nice. Also, if you ask the front desk, they do have bandaids if needed. It's a decent place, I wouldn't mind coming back. read more

Cool place, but they don't let you use your own belaying equipment and some of the ropes are very short, to the point where the belayer needs to climb a couple steps of the course to allow for enough slack for the climber to tie in. We also found that typical of smaller climbing gyms (though honestly this place wasn't that small), the courses were more difficult than the posted difficulty. I usually rock a 5.10B or C and I was having trouble with the As here. My girlfriend who does 5.9s was sticking to 5.8s. Also the courses could be a little more interesting. A lot of the courses were simply straight as an arrow. There was one cool one involving an upside down V (attached to my review), but that's about it. Lastly it is hard to move between difficulties as you keep having to return to the sparsely distributed color guides to determine what color your desired difficulty is. First time here and I have to say this was a great experience. TJ our climbing assistant was excellent. Very knowledgeable and very supportive. He made this a great experience for first timers. There's parking right outside in the private lot. Sessions last an hour but there are other offers if you wanted to take a class, etc. It cost us $50 for two people for the hour. They also include rock climbing shoes which I highly recommend. It's air-conditioned inside so it's perfect for the summer. read more

The entrance is on the side and the interior entrance is set up nice and clean. The common areas inside - like the sitting area, the bathroom and shelving area are all ratty and dated. The rope climbing looks stellar (pun intended) but I didn't come to rope the night I visited. Instead I came an hour before they closed to get a quick bouldering workout in. This was my first time at the facility. They had already shut down their system to check me in so I had to wait. Then no one gave me a tour or anything. No big I guess. I pretty much know the ropes at climbing gyms. Ha! I walked over to the bouldering area. There are a lot of routes. I thought the lay out of them- even the easiest ones sucked. Some of the v0 weren't something that a new person could do. If this was the first place I climbed I'd never come back. The routes are marked with tape which can be problematic because 1) the tape is below the hold so sometimes you can't see it from above, but ok and 2) tape doesn't stick very long in rough conditions, so it wasn't always marked where to go next. Also the bouldering wall was decent size...but here's the kicker on the night I went: they were changing parts of the wall. Meaning there were sections that weren't available to climb. AND NO ONE BOTHERED TO MENTION that on the way in. Additionally all of the people there had to share the limited space. So I paid full price for only part of the wall....and no one told me in advance so that I could decide for myself if I was willing to deal with this. They just made me wait to sign in and let me roll. I didn't like this place overall for a variety of reasons. Almost all of which I could have overlooked. But crappy customer service... can't do it. The staff had nothing to do other than to take care of customers at that hour of the night and clearly the focus was on going home. I won't be back. read more

What I appreciate most about this gym is the friendliness of the staff and the patrons and the amount of autobelay routes available. This gym really varies up the routes available for the autobelays and rotates them frequent enough which is clutch for someone who doesn't always have a climbing buddy! The boulder area is quite large and the routes here also are varied frequently. Depending on the time of day you come, it maybe crowded. However, fear not! The members are very friendly and take turns as well as willing to help you out! read more

Couches in the front part is kind of kitschy, but i like lying down like dead man on the mat anyway. It has more open space to stand around versus some others. They're meticulous with making sure you know your belay techniques (3 tests) before you can just wander on in on your own. They have some challenging, but fun walls. On super hot weather days, midway up the wall you will notice the temperature change as you go up it gets hotter and heavier. I feel accomplished when completing a climb. This is the second indoor rock climbing warehouse/facility I have been to. It is very clean, but the space is much smaller in comparison to Brooklyn Boulders. The price is relatively cheap as I paid 25 dollars for the whole day including shoe/harness/chalk rental. Saturdays are full of kids and birthday parties, but apparently, this place is filled with adults on the weekdays after work. The only thing I would suggest is to beef up the administrative staff. The "kids" (HS students, maybe college students at best) who work at the front desk is clueless when it comes to baselining their understanding of the various processes that are designed to be implemented. They have a little room to the side perfect for kids' birthday parties. I digress - in an effort to fight off the seriousness of childhood obesity, this would be a great way to introduce kids to a healthy sport. read more

My son recently had a bday party at the Gravity Vault and I was impressed by everyone that worked there. They were polite, patient with the 13 year old guests in the party and friendly. The manner in which the staff interacted with the boys was calm, yet Always in control. They also had the party actively climbing for 1 1/2 hours, challenging them and changing the rope courses or games to make it interesting. The last half hour was spent in the party room eating pizza and cake. This was a wonderful option for a bday party. And all I had to do was bring a cake. The staff took care of everything including party supplies like paper plates, cups, napkins, balloons, etc. They also took responsibility for serving and clean up. My favorite rock climbing gym. I love that the ropes are double wrapped so I don't need to anchor. It's well lit (I've noticed other gyms can be dim) and super clean. Everyone is so nice. They change the courses pretty often. Slacklining Wednesdays! And I love love love their chimney. Negatives would be that the courses are a little harder than the same ratings at other gyms. And I wish they were cheaper, but they do have some deals (half off Mondays, ladies nights, etc.) I love them! read more

This is the area's newest rock gym, and it's AWESOME! The gym uses a very safe gri-gri belay system, which makes it easy to jump from route to route quickly and very safe for climbers. They worked with a professional route-setting company and boy, does it show!!! Such fun routes, you'll find yourself there all day trying new and interesting problems. Plus, the holds and the rock wall are super-grippy since they are brand new. Excellent bouldering area, and you can top out all along the wall and look super-badass. Love, love, love. The gym is open again and the team did a great job with all the special considerations. There's a reservation process online that's very quick and easy to limit capacity. Plenty of PPE and safety protocols in place above what's mandated. Everything is open except for some of the workout equipment in the corner. You have to wear a mask due to regulatory guidelines. Overall, I think the team did as good of a job as anyone could expect...glad they're back open. read more

This place rocks if you're looking for an adventure without going to New Paltz or West Va. Great for kids and adults at all levels. I haven't climbed at this place but I could see myself doing it after my foot completely heals. They have some serious tall walls to climb but isn't that the fun challenge? It's easy to pass by this place going up Watchung Ave. - it's across the liquor store and right before the overpass. Parking is way in the back. I signed up classes for my daughter (got to be at least 5 years old) 6 for $199 in hopes she gains insight on problem solving skills and builds strength. After seeing this place, somehow it makes me want to go white water rafting down the Gorge. read more

There aren't too many rock climbing gyms nearby, and this one is mostly fine, so I'll likely be back. I went on a Saturday, and it wasn't crowded, and had a good mix of people, including a birthday party for some younger kids. The auto-belays are a nice feature, and a few lone climbers were using them. The climbs aren't too tall, but they're high enough to be a good climb. My only comment is that the routes seem poorly calibrated. There's a beginner area with routes that are unrated. This may be necessary since the rated material is so difficult. They use a color coding scheme, rather than annotating routes with YDS ratings (eg. 5.10). I usually climb about 5.9 / 5.10a in northern California (Mission Cliffs, other Touchstone gyms, and Planet Granite), and I've climbed elsewhere -- in Colorado, for instance. Here I struggled to do some climbs in the lowest color code bracket, which the key said corresponded to "5.8 and lower". Usually I'm able to at least read easier routes (let's say 5.9 and lower), and understand what the route setter intended. Here, I wondered if there were missing holds, just looking at some climbs that were rated as easy. I couldn't tell if the routes are unusually difficult, or just poorly planned. [Edit: Updated rating from 3 to 4, since I'm told that east coast gyms with shorter routes often have more difficult climbs, compared to longer west coast routes.] read more

I've been to two climbing facilities, Gravity and NJ Rock on 46. I have to say that Gravity is much cleaner and much more inviting. Look forward to new holds, lots of open space, high walls, crack climbs, a high arch for lead climbing and a very clean foam floor. The best part is that they use a gri gri belay system which gives you such piece of mind Wonderful place for beginners and advanced. Just had my daughter's 12th birthday here today, and we all had a fantastic experience! My daughter was picky about where she wanted to have her party, and this is the venue she decided on after visiting a few. The instructors were great with our group of 16 girls, and kept them entertained the whole hour and a half. The last half hour was reserved for pizza and cake in the party room. The staff was wonderful and took care of every little detail- from set up, serving and clean up. Everyone we interacted with was friendly and helpful- the staff is top notch.
