Had a great time at the members' preview today for GV - Montclair. I was most excited for the anticipated fitness section, and it was worth the wait! There are dumbbells, kettle balls, medicine balls, treadmills, elliptical machines, benches, squat racks, and rowing machines. There is a fair, dedicated space for this purpose which is definitely great. The walls had some great climbs, including beginner levels to some tougher ones. I can foresee space being an issue - there isn't much space between walls for people to sit and watch as they tend to do. But, I think GV definitely did the best they could with what they had and they delivered. There were some table spaces with outlets for work, so a plus for anyone who's looking to climb and get some work done. The staff is really nice and explained some stuff that will still be coming, including this VR/game room, fitness classes including yoga and pilates, and lockers in the bathrooms. Also saw a shower in the women's bathroom. Parking was difficult, but that's to be expected in Montclair. I believe the gym is looking to remedy that issue as well. All in all, we had a great time here and can't wait to be back more often!

If anyone loves the Gravity Vault chain and want to visit one of their pure bouldering locations, I would definitely recommend checking out Montclair. Upon entrance, you immediately notice one of the best in gym stores in NJ and you'll be surrounded by bulletins of flyers and activities. It really aids to the community feel of the place, and I gotta say, it's a pretty cool community. Everyone was super chill and friendly. The staff were incredibly helpful and accommodating. The facilities itself was top notch. The gym was stocked with every piece of equipment you can think of and it still had a lot of elbow space despite the small area. The only downside was that there was only one of everything so when someone took something, you had to move on to another exercise while waiting for them to finish. Also, there wasn't any music playing in the room, and it's pretty closed off from the rest of the gym so it was pretty awkward when someone else came in. But those are small things that are easy to move on from. As for the setting, I would say that it was harder than other GV locations. At Hoboken, the setting is pretty versatile, but consistent with the style. At Montclair, there is a learning gap between certain grades is huge and I sometimes found myself thinking it was incorrectly graded. Not to say the climbs were impossible or not fun, but it can be deceiving when you first go. Overall though, it's a great workout and there are many technically challenging climbs there.

There are other available gyms that are taller like: GV Hoboken, Goat, etc. In terms of bouldering it seems small and limited. A section that piqued my interest was the overhang tunnel. The routes get changed every semester or so for both bouldering and top rope climbing, and there are two auto-belays if you go there and don't have anyone to help belay you. (The people who go are also super nice--I've had people offer to belay me whenever I go alone!) They offer belay classes here as well--I think it's around $30, and once you're certified (they test you 3 times before letting you do your thing), you can come whenever you want! If you don't plan on getting belay-certified, you can still boulder whenever you want! :] For guests, it's just $5 for admission, which is about 1/4 the price of any day admission to the nearby climbing gyms. Harness rental is always free and shoe rental is $1 each time (free for your first time there though!)

So I decided to come here just to check it out before missing it out and regretting it that I could have gone in for free and would have to pay to come in the future... Btw, I heard that SRW was better than Steep Rock East (SRE), that's why I came to SRW instead of wasting my time with SRE, and I was right! I think it is a waste of time to go to SRE... The rating for this gym is: Meh, I have been to better climbing gyms in NYC The basement locker and bathroom lighting was super dim. I couldn't see much. Perhaps they should use higher wattage and higher colour temperature bulbs. The other reviews are right, there is no shower This place looks small and tiny. It consists of two sections for bouldering only: 1st Fl and 2nd Fl. Second Fl was just a short wall and about two dozen boulder problems. First Fl had taller wall and a cave. It had more boulder problems than the 2nd Fl At least the rating system is based on V's instead of colouring system. And the bouldering problems are more straightforward and less gymnastic than Vital's. I guess it was refreshing to try out other bouldering problems and style. Similar to needing to try out other restaurants after eating in the same place for long time... The gym had tall and clear windows that allowed natural light in. Passerby could see what is going on inside the gym and perhaps pique their curiosity. But, the design is quite similar to other gyms like: MetroRock Williamsburg. So, no awe from me! It was quite painful to find parking at this place even for a Sunday afternoon when parking was free. I had to park approx. 6 blocks away and walk to the gym... Definitely won't be coming to this place in the future when there are better gyms elsewhere in NYC...
