I was excited to visit the granary today while I was in Norfolk. As a kid, I used to come and eat here with my grandma. It's been many years since I've been back, and I was so sad to see that they really haven't kept the restaurant up very well. While traveling on business, I thought I would grab some lunch and work on a project. A hostess offered to seat me, but became quickly confused about exactly where to put me and we ended up walking to several areas of the restaurant that had empty tables before she was able to get some assistance and find the right booth for me to sit in. Unfortunately, they do not have Wi-Fi so I wasn't able to stay. I would have ordered their classic "French Cheesy" sandwich which sells for only $4.50 (it is sold a la carte, as all of the sandwiches are). Much of the menu is fried, although they do offer a salad. I choose to keep my nice memories of the granary as a fun, family-friendly place to eat. I was really sad to see that it had aged so much. I hope that it's current owners, or anyone who takes it over in the future will opt to redo the interior & give it the love that it needs. It's meant to feel warm and homey. This has definitely been a treasured restaurant in Norfolk for many years and it deserves to be taken care of. read more

I normally don't have any issues with this place but I had an order to go the girl at the desk to check you out was SWAMPED literally running back and forth putting orders in and checking people out so the one lady stepped in to help while she was putting a to go order in I said I had an order to go and she looked me in the face and said we'll I'm going to get the people behind you because this isn't my job I'm just helping I'm just taking the money. Ambiance- well it is dirty, uncleaned, dusty and grungy. From ledges to the menus and the tables, extremely nasty but better than the staff. Food-well it has overall improved from a year ago. Fresh, generous portions at reasonable prices. Unfortunately when a sit down(no drive thru) cant provide glass glasses, it might as well be a mcd;s or bk. Service- is disgusting and the staff is even worse. Extremely large woman with a gigantic belly hanging over her men's gym shorts and a sloppy grey t-shirt, and hair not even pulled back. One looks like she belongs in a tattoo parlor with head shaved on the sides to show off even more class. The original owner is likely rolling in his grave, they prided themselves on neat, clean and pleasant looking staff. Our waitress was carrying my pie and a bus tub....yum yum. Shanna looks like a poster child for how not to make yourself presentable, frumpy, dumpy and ungroomed. Wont go back no matter how okay the food is, the staff left me gagging. read more

Second time we have eaten here. Visitors to area. First time was a couple of years ago. Everything was great. This time it wasn't. Ordered soup extra hot. Came out perfect. Ordered 1/2 lb hamburger discussion in depth about rare hamburger. Server even jokingly said "mooing" I agreed. Burger arrived I cut it in half it was cooked to well done. Called the waitress over to show her she stated " that's not rare". Duh. Offered to replace it I declined I will point out when orders are not correct but will not return food nor get something in place of. Trust is an issue for me in a restaurant and I don't believe in wasting food. I ate Half because I am a diabetic and was hungry took the other half home hubby he ate the other half. Slip had the order clearly written rare how can a chef screw up a rare hamburger. Will not return there on my next visit. It's too bad because first time we were pleased. Some nice people work here - which means a lot. Very reasonable prices, but you do get what you pay for. Salad and salad dressing was old (I don't know how to explain it otherwise), entrees were fair - but be aware that the primary cooking method here is fried. Pie used canned fruit - which always leads to a gloppy outcome. I can't recommend it - but I do appreciate the efforts of the waitstaff. read more

Stopped here to meet a friend on our way back home. Food and service were OK, decor was very much dated. Outside appearance of the building was a little off-putting, and needs some maintenance. Horrible experience here! We will not be returning! The food is decent however the lady who rung up our total with the black bangs threw a FIT about us wanting to split the check. She rolled her eyes and sighed and turned around and answered the phone without saying anything. Then after hanging up she goes well now I have to void the cash register and start all over. Then she tried to tax us 18% and had to pull someone else over because she didn't understand basic math. She was extremely rude and completely ruined it for us! Got appetizer and no drinks. Had to ask for drinks twice. I ordered steak sandwich cooked medium it came well done. Onion rings were the best part of the meal. My husband ordered chopped steak and it was over done as well. I'm being generous with 3 stars. read more

I visited this place when I was on a college tour in the adjacent town of Wayne. My family and I wondered where the locals eat, so we asked around and found this place. Yes the decor may be a little dated, but it's supposed to be, it's from the old days of farm equipment. The server was extraordinarily sweet, the food was cheap and delicious, and I would recommend this place very much. read more

I don't think the locals know what they have here. I try to stop in every time I fly back to town. It's good food at incredibly, almost ridiculously cheap prices. It's very down home, and the waitstaff is pleasant. I come from Dallas, and you can't get that atmosphere in my town. Loved it. read more

This is a small town family feeling diner. It has amazing food and very reasonably priced. Hidden gem through generations in Norfolk.

Not at all impressed. A bland, mushy, could have had a better frozen dinner affair. The server dropped stuffed on the floor and after a cursory wipe on her apron told us "no big deal". I'd think that was a determination the customer should make. It was wildly popular for reasons i could NOT figure out. The decor was off putting and the servers seemed harried and while not rude, they weren't small town friendly either. The one bright spot was the cashier who was extremely gracious. Unless you have people in your party who have trouble with spices, and need very soft, easy to chew cuisine I would avoid this place at ALL costs. read more

The crowd was pretty senior when we went for lunch on Thursday. We were seated right away just before noon, by the time we left there was a pretty big crowd building up in the lobby. Service was OK and the place could use a little TLC, but the food was surprisingly delicious and pretty cheap. They also serve alcohol. The online menu included Cheese Frenchees so we stopped here for lunch while on a sibling road trip. We had enjoyed Frenchees at King's restaurant in Omaha during our teen years and found these to be very close to what we remembered, and very good. The Tuna Frenchee also was good as were the fries and onion rings. Clam chowder was on the fishy side. Prices were very inexpensive - 6 of us ate for $40. Nothing fancy about the place - service was good on a Friday afternoon around 2 pm. Glad we stopped. read more

Very rude service by certain waitresses and others are very exceptional and pleasent and know their craft, but as there are fewer pleasant waitresses, the rude waitresses take the majority. It's a shot in the dark, depending on sure randomness, whether or not your meal will be consistent as you remember it to be or if it's nothing but unrecognizable, old, cold, overcooked, undercooked, wrong orders entirely or just unprofessional handling of the comings and goings-on of the food handling and cooking and personal service at this place. One night the chicken was phenomenal, the next 3 nights burnt, undercooked and then a very, very long wait. Some staff are on top of their game, but again, they are few and the rest of the staff are mostly snobby, rude and sometimes act like your not even there, seemingly lazy and unattentive, it really makes the good waitresses and cooks shine. It's like you would have to memorize which way your food turns out on which day to figure out which days you should even go there! Such an unfortunate thing too, they sell good ol' meat & potatoes people kind of food, comfort food, it's a shame it's done so poorly less than half the time. read more

Poor service. Went in at 1:00PM, cashier/hostess was more interested in taking money than the people waiting in line to be seated. There were four waitresses that walked by, no interest in seating us. When we left, without being seated, I sarcastically said thank you very loud and she still didn't acknowledge us. It looks old and crappy on the outside. Inside doesn't look much better. The service is a bit slow. But the food... Oh my god! Amazing! There are lines outside on the weekends to get in. People drive for miles to get here. Worth a try. You will be back. read more
