We were visiting and this place is our fams fave. The dips we started with were actually very tasty, bean and queso both were delis. They came with two different chips, flour and corn which I haven't seen anywhere. Pretty kool. Drinks were forgettable so I won't even mention. We went a day after Christmas so they got busy, we didn't really see our server but when we did she was nice and pleasant. Couple of tv-s around to watch some sport if you wish. The room we sat in was warm, fam said other rooms are cold so I'm glad we didn't have to experience that. Was around 20 degrees outside so that was more than enough to deal with. There are so many places to try and so little time. Can't wait to go visit again and check more out. read more

I try to mention in my reviews every time this happens but when you walk in you just FEEL dirty. Very musty, very cluttered. The food is about as good a you can expect from a Mexican restaurant at this location but I do appreciate that they have tamales on the menu. Staff was fairly friendly but our server was mostly nowhere to be found. Truthfully I'd scout a different Mexican food spot next time. read more

Three-stars on Yelp seems appropriate. I have a been here a couple of times over the past 10 years or so. We stopped in with a group of 14 on a Saturday afternoon and they were able to immediately accommodate our group (the restaurant was mostly empty otherwise). I enjoyed a margarita and from there sampled some chips and guac, nachos, etc. I do not believe the guac was freshly made. The food was overall okay. The service was attentive and for our group size, everything was prepared timely. The restaurant has a lot of knickknacks throughout such old license plates, historical signage, old boxes, etc. and I feel like they need to take everything off the walls, dust and give it a thorough cleaning. read more

So after the dance recital on Saturday (5-29) my niece got to pick where we would eat and she chose Michael's because she likes their taco salad (she had her heart set on it). We were a party of 8. When we arrived, they were busy like most places in town that day. A gal at the door asked how many and then escorted us to a long table. We sat down and started to look at the menus that the gal who seated us had left. As we were sitting there, another server came up to our table and told us that the table was reserved and that we had to move and the only other seating available at the time was separate booth seating, so we chose to leave and go somewhere where we could eat as a family and not in separate booths. Had we not been escorted and seated with menus, this wouldn't have been an issue but it definitely dampened our 7-year-olds special meal. Prior to this, about three months ago, our same party went to eat at Michael's and, for some reason, the food was "off." Three of us sent our food back because it didn't taste right. Against our better judgement and because my niece wanted to eat there, we gave it another try on Saturday and were disappointed again. There are an abundance of Mexican restaurants in Norfolk and we will definitely seek somewhere else next time. Michael's Cantina has lost our business! read more

I'll chime in that the jalapeño bottle caps are worth a try - definitely also the margaritas and bean dip (which comes in an edible flour tortilla bowl) - but when it comes to entrees, just a-ok. I had the beef taco and chicken enchilada combo plate. And don't get me wrong, I ate all of it, but it was really average in terms of Mexican food. Pretty reminiscent of a plate you could have at any other Midwest Mexican restaurant. Edible yet forgettable. read more

Not as authentic as they advertise. I've been to my fair share of Mexican places around the country and I wasn't terribly impressed by Michael's. We started with the guacamole appetizer. No chips? It was literally five bucks for a small cup of this. It was actually some of the least appealing guac I've ever had. Very slimy in texture and not much flavor. This wasn't fresh at all, but either some store bought or day old mix. For the first time in my life I didn't finish the guac that I was served. The sweet potato fries sounded appealing, but they were not so good either. Very soggy and undercooked. No ketchup? At least there was hot sauce... I wasn't in the mood for anything after those two appetizers. Not to mention they don't have much that's vegetarian at all. At least the hostess and waitress were pleasant. Excellent seasoning and marinade of the beef fajita meat here. I had the tasty strips of goodness on a salad that was otherwise unimpressive. Do yourself a favor and just get the fajitas. Michael's Cantina is an alright Mexican/American restaurant. It's basically the local version of Carlos O'Kelly's, and is definitely better than its chain competitor. The entree's are alright. I haven't been here in quite a few years and nothing is standing out in my memory about them. I do remember enjoying their chimichanga's. They do have fantastic bean dip, and this has stuck with me over the years. The beans have a wonderful smokey flavor, great melty cheese on top, and it comes in a mini-fried tortilla shell (think small version of a taco salad shell). It's quite tasty. I also remember their fried ice cream that has any number of toppings plopped or drizzled on it (I remember really enjoying the Kahlua topping). There aren't a lot of fantastic restaurants in Norfolk, so if you need a place to go and are in the neighborhood, give this a try. I would recommend for more authentic Mexican to visit Tienda Leon's or Mezcal. read more

Cheap and worth it. The beef in the fajitas is excellent. The jalepeno bottle caps are on point. The chicken wings are also cooked crispy, just as I like. The only drawback to this place is the spice isn't there. I ordered the hot wings and were probably on level with a mild at Buffalo Wild Wings. However, the hot bbq is very flavorful even if not hot. Great Mexican restaurant, especially for this smaller city. I was pleased to find out that this Michael's is the same as the one in Omaha's Old Market and somewhat surprised to find out the McCook location was the original. What I really like about both locations is how fresh the food is, and how you can tell the veggies are freshly chopped and the chicken nicely grilled on my fajita chicken salad. Very affordable. Great for kids with lots of entrees on the kids menu and regular menu for them or to split. Good selection of beer. Although I didn't have the tamales this time, they are very good. You will not go away hungry. And if you're on the road, and Norfolk is a rest stop, this is a great local spot to check out so you can avoid another chain restaurant. read more

This was a surprisingly great place. I just happen to be staying at a hotel nearby, so I walked across the street and was not disappointed. The decor is cool and the staff was all friendly and welcoming. The food was great, the chips were probably the best I have ever gotten at any restaurant, and the portions were very satisfactory. I was not impressed at all. I've heard people around town talk this place up, so naturally I had to give it a try. I was expecting Authentic food and great Margaritas. As they say they have some of the best in town. Nope. The food was not authentic. It was very average, nothing special about it. We did have chips and salsa, and that was pretty good, but it's hard to screw that up. The Margaritas we alright, they we decently priced, which was great and all, but nothing special. You do get a good sized portion, and it's very reasonably priced. The menu is large and you do have plenty of options. The staff was friendly and the food came quick. I just don't think the food is worth it. It's just not that impressive. Even my Husband, who likes just about any Mexican food, was not impressed. I wouldn't suggest this place. read more

We had eaten at Michael's several years ago and decided to go again during our stay in Taos. We both got the enchilada dinner. To say it was bad is an understatement. Large menu, many options. Nachos Grande was a highlight, except the plate could've used more chips and/or been served with extra chips. The chip to topping ratio weighed heavily on the toppings side. Also, sour cream was served from packets like fast food or cafeteria - which I found odd. Service was exceptionally fast. Entrees were okay. Not great, not terrible. I prefer Americanized versions of food, and even I wondered where some of the flavor was. I had to taco/enchilada combo - taco meat was fairly bland. I am from Phoenix AZ visiting the Old Market area. I was out with friends exploring and stopped by Michael's to use the restroom. After leaving the restroom I was confronted by a not so gentleman telling me the restrooms were for paying customers ONLY. So much for Nebraska hospitality! I bought a bottle of water and tipped the bartender. I told the not friendly doorkeep thank you and to be rest assured I or my friends would not be back. This place is great! I stayed at the campgrounds nearby,back in May of '09,and came here for dinner. Best margaritas and chips with guacomole,etc.,and the burrito was perfect! Thank God I live in New York,because I'd be as big as a house,without a driver's license,if I lived within a 100 miles of this place! Everyone who works there are all nice,and they had a nice crowd in the place. Cool looking ,too. I love Michael's in the market in Omaha. I have been going to Michael's since they were in South Omaha on South 20th and L St.'s. Michael Henry is a great host and his staff are always welcoming and the experience is always pleasant. Unfortunately, I cannot say the same for the Norfolk location. Traveling on business and was looking forward to paying homage to my Omaha Mexican staple, I mentioned how I loved the Omaha location, the food, the margaritas, and was happy to be dining at the establishment. My server, Tayla , seemed very annoyed to be working in general and not interested at all I was a fan of Michaels. All the margaritas, regardless of top shelf, are served with sprite (confirmed by Tayla)! I was told by Matthew, the bartender, upon trading in my extremely dry lime "this is not how we do things in Norfolk and can't do much better on a fresher lime!" The sprite for mix was ok and not a terrible deviation from a traditional margarita. However, when you order a top shelf margarita, it's nice to have a good tequila, a nice Grand Marnier, and some decent mix--preferably lime juice. Overall, the food is consistent with the Omaha location and good in my opinion. The service needs a lot of work! It was almost as though the staff felt like I was lucky to be dining there. Went to Michael's last night to have what we thought would be a nice dinner, instead we got to sit there and listen to the owner repeatedly say the "f" word. By the time we left the room was full and I had heard enough. I walked over to the table he was sitting at and asked him why he thought it was necessary to continually use the "f" word. His response was "it just happens". I asked him if was at all concerned about offending his customers, he had no response again other than it just happens. I told him we would not be stepping foot in his establishment again and all he had to say was "have a good night". He did not seem the least bit concerned that his use of language may be offensive to others around him.
