This unassuming little restaurant has some really great pizza, homemade soup, burgers and fries. I have to say anything I have tried has been top notch. If you are in Carleton Place looking for a place to eat, you definitely want to go here you won't be disappointed. Update: Stopped in to try the pizza.. We had heard from a few people that it was the best pizza in town, so we decided to roll the dice and give the place a second try. The first thing we noticed is that the place was quite dirty...we knew from the other time we were there that the decor was dated and it was a little messy.. but this time we definitely noticed the dirty floors and tables. Our waitress was great and had us drinks and menus right away & bright the kid drinks with lids. We started off the meal with an order of deep fried pickles. Although they looked like dill pickles they seemed more like hot face burning green sticks..with little flavour. It came with a sauce that I can best describe as off white and gelatinous. We ordered the Canadian pizza which was good, but I wouldn't say it is the best..the dough was soggy so you were forced to eat it with a knife and fork and no condiments came with the pizza (hot pepper flakes, parmesan Cheese etc.). It did use real bacon and a good amount of cheese which likely affected the crust. The sauce was good but not great. Overall I can't see us going back here..if you are driving through and want a greasy spoon breakfast or dinner it may be worth a stop. read more

I stopped in because the parking lot had room for an RV pulling a car. I walked in the door and the dirty carpets made me want to turn around and leave. But I sat down and realised they sell beer! After 5 pm in Carleton Place it's hard to find beer. The beer was cold and the Bacon Cheeseburger Poutine I ordered cake out hot and super delicious! The AC works well also. So if they would clean the carpets this place would be perfect. The service was amazing also. read more

There's nothing Gourmet about the food. First thing comes to mind is Truck Stop. Food likewise, truck stop. From the outside you're reluctant to give it a try if you haven't been here before. That at least was how I felt. Inside you'll find that it's dated but you know what, it works. There's even a PacMan/Galaga arcade game that is only 50 cents to play!! Food selection is typical for a diner. I had no complaints about my HungryMans breakfast. Food came fast and service was excellent. Prices were exceptionally reasonable. This is a funny little restaurant. My daughter and I love it, and it's a bit of a step back in time. The name is misleading, and I'd love to know the history of it. Décor is simple, functional, and a little bit dated, though clean and well kept. It's more of a diner than anything. My personal wish is that they would ditch the carpet. IMHO Carpets and restaurants are not a great match. :-) They serve 'home-cooked' style North American food: think pizza, burgers and fries/poutine. Everything we have tried is great. They are known locally as the place to go for pizza - but we also like a lot of their other food, like French Onion Soup and their Fish and Chips. Some of the staff can seem a bit gruff at first, but are all wonderful once they size you up. (It may be that they know we aren't local and they aren't sure what to make of is. I'm just guessing here.) Would I return: We eat here about once a month in Spring/Summer/Fall, so yes. Would I recommend: Depends on the person. The décor might be off-putting to some. read more

Hands down, best pizza in Carleton Place. The crust is medium, with a generous amount of cheese (but not too greasy). The crust is crispy and is always made on time. The restaurant itself is a bit dated. Its clean, but in serious need of a revamp. I prefer to do the takeout. Menu is big, but don't count on anything fresh. Its mostly deep fried, ready to go items. The bar menu is small and are better off swinging by the LCBO before you pick up your pizza. The service is really friendly, but at times slow. This place is ALWAYS busy which is great. Now with a recent renovation the restaurant looks clean and tidy. Gone are the old carpets and the rooms have been repainted and there is new lighting. With the great food they serve it's an excellent choice for a meal. We had the special pork chop and it was great. Now with the Covid 19 restrictions we are going to try the take out. read more

If you are looking for a very tasty meal for a reasonable price without the frills this is your place. Doesn't look like much from the outside and the interior decor isn't anymore but the food is all home cooked from scratch and served piping hot in generous portions- definitely enough for lunch the next day! Service is nice and friendly, again nothing special but the food is the focus. The poutine is the best I've ever had- seriously I take my out of town guests here who haven't tried poutine before! Lots of squeaky cheese with piled yummy high fries and piping hot beef gravy- bet you can't finish one by yourself- it's enough for two! A variety of home cooked meals like hot turkey sandwich- again real turkey piled high on bread with loads of delicious gravy- homemade veggies on the side (not the frozen type) and again tons of yummy fries or side of poutine or potato in whatever form you prefer. I've never been disappointed with anything I have ordered from poutine to pizza to roast beef with all the fixings you just can't leave hungry and totally satisfied. read more

A big wind/tornado storm just hit carleton place and surrounding areas. A lot of people had no power! I was one of those people and had three kids to feed. So we drove down to find that The gourmet also had no power. However, they said that we run on gas and you can order anything on the menu pretty much, except stuff where a toaster is needed! This is a great spot to stop and eat if you're in a hurry and dont want to wait an hour for you're order to come. While the decor may be a little dated, the food comes quick and the servers are really friendly. Sure it has a diner feel but sometimes those are the hidden gems and thats the case here. The portion are huge and will leave you feeling satisfied both in the wallet and in your stomach. Lots of parking and the location on the hwy are both pluses. read more

Typically I would go here with my dad over the years and I never had a problem, always had good friendly service until recently. I decided to go with a couple friend a few months back and had terrible service, an older blond lady was our server and she avoided our table for over half an hour coming towards us then turning away and going else where at least 5 times we eventually were served and went to the counter when we were ready to leave as we didn't want to wait around for the server once more. I assumed this to be a fluke experience so I returned yesterday with my boyfriend and we had the same older blond server after being at the table for a while she came with menus and asked what we would like to drink we order milk and juice and looked threw the menus after about 15 minutes we closed our menus and stacked them together to make it more obvious we were done with them. Another customer came and sat at the table next to us and immediately our server went to his table brought his drink and took his order it was at this point as she was passing us I asked if we could have our drinks and said we were ready to order her response "you will have to wait" after already being there for 20 minutes and watching her serve someone else within 5. So we waited and she finally came with our drinks and took our order. The food came out in a timely fashion and she brought it to our table but took half my meal and stated it was actually for someone else and walked away with it. I ate what I had my boyfriend finished his meal and we watched as two more people were seated and received their drinks and full meals it was at this point I asked a pleasant looking server who was actually paying attention if I could speak to a manager I was guided to him where I said I was still waiting on food and for the second time was receiving poor service. He immediately gave me the rest of my order and I went and sat down to Finnish eating. The blond women came back to our table rudely stating that she was talking to other customers and they couldn't believe she recieved a complaint begrudgingly telling us our meal would be free and finishing with a comment on how young people don't eat there and that we clearly just like to complain. never in my life have I recieved such rude and disrespectful service, I am polite and no I don't tend to complain but the situation warranted it. Doesn't seem to me that young people are welcomed here and despite the good food I will not be returning. read more
