Have been wanting to try this gem for a while and we were so happy that to celebrate our anniversary there. It's a very small restaurant, with a simple nice patio. We sat outside it was a bit of a chilly day so we were the only ones out (private dining) we had special dietary restrictions and the chef was awesome to accommodate.. all the plates were delicious, chef is super awesome and nice, staff very friendly.. we really enjoyed every dish, they are creative but not to the point you don't know what your eating.. they had twist on some coming dishes like gazpacho, baklava but all plated super nicely.. they even made the experience fun by having a crossword to fill out and guess the next dish! The chef for us a nice rose for our anniversary .. all in all it was a fantastic experience.. he even made the effort to walk us out to the door...this was our first time here but would definitely come back again! read more

We've been to Black Tartan Kitchen quite a number of times and have never been disappointed. We've been lucky enough to enjoy quite a number of meals at Michelin-starred restaurants. Fine dining at its best. Our meal was delicious, beautiful and entertaining all at the same time. It is a set menu restaurant so all the guests were served the same food at the same time with the chef coming out to explain each dish. Each guest had a crossword puzzle whose answers could be found in each of the dishes being served which we enjoyed thoroughly. The restaurant is small and cozy, it was a joy to hear others reactions to the same food we were eating. The flavour combinations were delicious, I really appreciated how the different flavours came together to create joy in each mouthful. The presentation was gorgeous and the selection was unique. This was my first time eating bison and it tasted amazing. The chef Ian and the staff were very attentive and helped to make this a wonderful experience. We had a wonderful dinner here in a nice room with a wonderful knowledgable server. The room is tones of wood and grays with historic area photos adding interest to the space. We had the escargot starter which had a beautiful presentation and wonderful flavour. I had the rainbow trout. They nailed it. Our server was able to recommend the perfect wine to go with it. Since the food was wonderful I decided to splurge for dessert. I ordered blueberry sorbet with a chocolate ganache.both were excellent. Overall a very enjoyable experience. Amazing. This is honestly such a great restaurant and I hope that more people will make the drive out to Carleton place to get here because it is absolutely fantastic. I went here with my boyfriend's family for a birthday and it was a Wednesday night so it was quiet and there weren't too many people. The waitress (who was very nice and welcoming) seated us promptly beside the window so we were able to see the 'downtown' strip. The decor inside is beautiful and we found out that the gigantic tartan that is painted in their main room is actually printed out and pixelated (how cool is that?). The restaurant is very chic, modern and just gives you a very nice modern feel/vibe. I started off with their House made sour dough and butter, and all proceeds go to Y's Owl Maclure, a division of ASD Services, which is the cafe across the street. :) It's nice light and very crispy. We shared some of the escargot which was rich and buttery and not rubbery at all. Glad I got the bread so I could wipe the plate off when the escargots were all gone! Their menu changes every day, so what we may have had may not be what everyone had. I got their steak frites, and we also got the catch of the day (don't remember the fish) and the seared duck breast. My steak frites were so good. They came with fries, lemon aioli and demi-glace, and the fries were just so crispy and well salted (and handmade). The steak was soft and moist. The fish had some fresh veggies and the duck breast was just right and not too dry. The only thing that was a bit disappointing was the dessert, not because of the taste, but because the porportion was so small, it was quite a thin slice for $9, but it was great. First Impressions: nice decor, intimate. However when greeted at the door we got the standard "do you have a reservation". No we didn't have a reservation. It's Thursday night and the place is completely empty. Hmmm, I think we can fit you in...says the hostess. Maybe it's my pet peace but if you want me to come back, make me feel welcome. Not like I am imposing by being seated in an empty restaurant. Menu is very interesting but not a lot of options. If you aren't into duck or rabbit it's steak or vegetarian risotto. While the meals look fantastic it doesn't have a broad appeal. It would be nice to see some other options. We ordered the Charcuterie Board and the Cheese Board. Both were excellent and the waitress knew the origin of all of the meats and cheeses. I would say the cheese Board was a bit light. I would have liked to see some more cheese, fruit, or anything on the board. We stopped at the appetizers. There just wasn't enough on the menu to compel us to stay. Food quality was superb very nice selection of local meet and cheeses well presented. Overall really nice place. Great food initial reception turned me off but I would give it another try read more

First off, who knew that a town like Carleton Place would be so dense with excellent eateries? Among all those in town, Black Tartan is noteworthy. It's noteworthy not just because it happens to be exceptional in a smaller town. It's noteworthy because it would be exceptional in a city like Toronto or New York. Since we moved to Carleton Place, which isn't that long ago, we've been trying the local restaurants. Black Tartan was the first return visit... at my wife's insistence. Perfect choice. Why should you make a trip to the Black Tartan in Carleton Place. Well, first of all, there's the bistro vibe. The size, menu, closeness is friendliness incarnate. Little touches are everywhere. My wife particularly likes the (black, tartan) throw shawl provided. Second, the menu itself. Regularly changing it shows the creativity of a chef that worked and learned at Michelin-starred restaurants in Europe. Local boy goes afar and comes home to raise the game. What a great story. But the menu is usually full of locally inspired creativity as well as tastes of the world in "rural" Ontario. Third, the wine menu is as good as any I've come across for the price points. Fourth, parking is free. Hey, it's Carleton Place. In summer and winter, Bridge Street is nothing if not quaint. Fifth on the list but not in importance, the staff attitude. Believe it or not, it's not east being "down home" and "uptown" at the same time. The restaurant draws both patrons with both expectations: juggling that as well as can be is the front-of-house skill the ladies out front do very well with--at least for me and anyone else I've talked to about the restaurant. I could go on, but a better option is to give it a try. If you're local or passing through, it's definitely a place to stop at. If you're in Ottawa or Kanata, it's a destination you should try. BTW, although I've chatted with Ian and the staff, I'm just a very satisfied patron. read more

Stopped in on a weekday with a couple of friends for a casual lunch. the atmosphere was cozy, the service friendly, and the food was amazing. Had the crocque monsieur and it was so well balanced and delicious. I love a place that doesn't make you choose, and instead offers both salad AND fries with most entrees. Amazing meal with some very good friends. We explored the blind selection offered on Friday and Saturday night. Meals started with the Pumpkin, Squash, Apple soup, followed by the Fois Gras Terrine, entree was the seared Duck leg and amazing mashed potatoes ending with a Pumpkin Spice sticky toffee pudding. You will never go wrong allowing the kitchen to decide what you want for dinner. You HAVE to visit this restaurant for an unbelievable experience. read more

This restaurant provides a nice ambiance and the food is good. I only gave 4 out 5 stars as the price of the food is not reflective of what you get. It's great food but there are other local restaurants serving similar fare for better prices that are just as good. read more

I joined a gaggle of friends on a Saturday night. We were a large group. The waitress was excellent. She was a happy person despite the fact that we moved around a lot - she did not make one mistake and processed all the individual payments with a smile. The food was delicious. I had the best French Onion soup I have ever had, a delicious salmon dish where the fish was cooked to perfection and the dessert was a creme brule served with flavourful blackberries! I will definitely return with maybe a smaller group. read more
