I'm an Italian Market slob and the last place I would expect to find a legit one is Downtown Merced. This place super respectable, as Italian Markets go. They carry some fairly hard to find specialty meats, spices and Italian culinary must-haves. I tried the Vespa sandwich and have to say the quality and taste was exceptional. Over-priced sandwiches. Mostly bread, little meat. No option to customize. There was fresh pasta made but no sign to say it existed nor pricing. I asked what the portions and prices were and he seemed surprised I asked. I get what they're trying to do, to offer legit Italian meat, pasta, sweets etc. However Merced lacks the clientele to support this niche business. I appreciate the legit mortadella and prosciutto, it's been a year since we were in Italy. They need to make heftier sandwiches loaded with actual substance if they're gonna charge that much. Came by on a Sunday evening - slow service, slow day. I ordered the green gold and it was okay. I probably wouldn't go out of my way to come to The Goods for a sandwich. However, the bread itself was really soft and delicious. I'd come by to buy the bread! There is a small eating area if you are interested. Quiet too. read more

Was really excited to try The Goods, but I was a little underwhelmed. None of the food was really great. The Mac and cheese was good, but it did not really have much lobster. The pasta salad was very flavorful and all the ingredients worked well together. The sandwich needed more meat. I got it without the olives because I am not a fan, but maybe that is what it was missing to be great. They have a lot of pastas and different breads, so I might go back to try some of the other goods. The service was just okay, it took about 15 minutes to get 2 sandwiches. I stopped by here on a whim today after walking by several times and seeing both indoor and outdoor seating was full. I wanted a sweet treat and found this tiramisu, the best dessert I've had in a while. It's so light, fluffy, not too sweet and not soggy at all. I was intrigued by this prickly pear soda and it was the freshest tasting soda I've ever had. While looking at those, one of their customers urged me to try the daily fresh made pasta. The individual that helped us was very informative and super sweet making pleasant small talk. The pasta was again incredibly fresh and tasty, the pesto on it was amazing and my friend agreed; the best pesto we've ever had. It's an adorable shop with dishware and other trinkets and food for sale . 10/10, no notes, would definitely recommend. This is a Merced local gem. Ordered a Rueben, sandwich was anemic at best. Lacked sauerkraut, meat was bacon thin and barely covered half the bread. Bread was non toasted- grilled. Had copious amounts of butter? Was just odd and disappointing and our meatball sandwich was fine. My wife and I split the Vespa and the Pompeii chop sandwiches. They were amazing. Fresh ingredients and the bread was delicious. Customer service was great. We really enjoyed the vibe inside so we decided to sit enjoy our sandwiches at their tables. While we waited for the sandwiches to be made we walked around the store brainstorming different dinner ideas we could make with their specialty products. Can't wait to go back to see what's new.
