During our 2 week vacation in Ireland, the Gleneagle Hotel was the only "miss" in the places we stayed. Gayle and I are pushing 70 and we felt really old here. It felt like a combination of a convention center and an assisted living home. Fern figured out that there were a lot of daily buses coming in full of local seniors in town for some rest and relaxation, and this was the place to be. That also explained the adjacent convention center, including small and large entertainment venues. And it was odd to hear "Take me Home Country Roads" emanating from the bar both evenings we were here. I didn't know that John Denver was Irish?
Other "Opportunities for Improvement":
1. The buffet breakfasts were largely inedible, including undercooked sausages, weak coffee, OK eggs, and stale bread.
2. The Gleneagle is a couple miles out from central Killarney, requiring a cab ride both ways. We might as well have been out in Iowa somewhere considering this suburban locale.
There were of course positives:
1. Our room was spacious and comfortable.
2. Gleneagle staff were all very nice, engaging and helpful.
And maybe some missed opportunities, like taking advantage of some of the music performance opportunities? There have been some impressive acts that have come through the Gleneagle. read more
