Buckle your seat belts folks, I've a lot to say about my stay here. I was excited to stay here, as I had heard great things about the Great Southern over the years. Unfortunately the expectation did not match the reality. I had high expectations for this 4-star hotel.
We booked in for two nights over the Christmas period 2022. We were travelling with our 6 month old and decided to book the Junior suite as there would be more space and we fancied a bit of added luxury. We arrived at the hotel in the evening after a day of travelling. Unfortunately, there was absolutely no parking next to the main entrance. I popped in and asked for guidance on parking and was directed to a lot in the back near the leisure centre.
When we got to the desk to check in there was some confusion about access to our room. We tried to find out how to get to the room. But we were not given the information. Instead we were informed that another staff member would assist us to our room. I was confused and thinking this was their way of pushing service on us when we really didn't need it. We were travelling with our stroller, one case and personal small bags in tow. It was when we got closer to our room that we realized the room was not accessible for a stroller, as there was a staircase that needed to be climbed. The hotel does have an elevator, but our room was located in an area not accessible with the elevator. This was the main issue we had. It was not made clear during booking, or check in that we would not be able to access our room with the stroller. This was very frustrating, as we had booked a crib for the room so staff were aware of our need. And when we tried to get this clarification at check in we were not told.
The room was pretty nice, but a bit dated and not kept in excellent condition. For example, the toilet holder was hanging off the wall. The room lacked some of the staples I am used to when staying in hotels these days. For example, there was just a kettle and no coffee maker in the room, the coffee and tea provided was pretty basic, there was no drinking water in the room, the tv had no streaming services (Netflix etc) available, just basic local channels. Not a big deal, but these are things I am used to when staying in hotels. The room felt dated to me. I understand the hotel is historic, so some things are not able to be updated. But when staying at other historic hotels they add these modern touches (modern tv/coffee machine etc) which make the difference.
Our booking included breakfast, so I was excited to see what was on offer. Again, it was lack luster. There was a nice spread of self service buffet items available such as cereal, fruit, warm pastries, meat and cheese, yoghurt, juice etc. We were provided a menu to order from also. I went for the eggs Benedict and my other half ordered American style pancakes. Again, it was mediocre. The English muffin was dry, no garnish was on the plate, the eggs were just ok. My other half had a similar feeling about his pancakes. They weren't what I would consider American style. We lucked out with a dinner in our booking, which was complementary. This was the star of the show for our stay, ironically. This was a three course meal, with a sorbet between starter and mains. I went for the goat cheese tart, the beef and a cheese board to end it all. My other half started with the soup, had the venison for mains and finished with a frangipan. We both enjoyed a mulled wine sorbet. The dinner was fantastic. We were recommended a tasty bottle of Sauvignon blanc to accompany our meal. The staff in the dining room were great. We had one lady serve us every time we dined. She was super friendly and attentive.
We popped to the bar a couple of times and the service was not great. We were largely ignored. Is it table service? Do I need to go to the bar? Who knows. I ended up going to the bar as we sat at the table and no server came by. The service was slow. Staff looked at me and then looked away. We asked one person to clean our table from previous patrons and we were told that staff member worked on the other side of the bar. The person working on our side looked at us and looked away.
All in all, I was pretty disappointed with our stay. I was expecting a 4-star experience, but received what I would consider a 2-star experience which stings when you pay 4-star prices. The lack of transparency on access for a stroller was very frustrating. I got the impression the staff were overwhelmed or disinterested. The hotel really needs some tweaks to bring it into the modern standard for hotel stays. We stayed at other 4-star hotels in Ireland during this same time period and they were excellent. I hope the Great Southern gets there soon. read more
