I watched the match here this past weekend (Ireland v France) and the staff were beyond friendly, even though it was crowded and I was in the way, standing at the end of the bar pass thru. Decided to try it for dinner. Had the wings and chili beef. The wings were simply amazing. Full of flavour and not spicy. I like spice and heat but will always choose flavour over those. The chili beef was the perfect mains for a cold day. Nicely species chili beef with the perfect amount of cumin. Served with - get this - rice, chips, and tortilla crisps!!! The chips were skin on and perfectly cooked. The crisps were out of. Bag but perfect for dipping. I'm calling this chili beef three ways. The three options on a plate are genius. And filling. OMG was it filling. And Beer. Had two jars of the wheat. Nice but prefer their red. The house beer is really good. Don't mistake this place for a tourist venue. When a match is in you'll find it full of locals. Have dinner (or lunch). Have some beer. Chat with the friendly staff. Chat with Glen. Super friendly and. Good service. Sit upstairs. This pub is not usually a big hit on the Dublin pub crawl list, but maybe it should be. The Ginger Man is an adorable pub which oozes character and provides the perfect perch for some mid-afternoon philosophising. Apparently this pub enjoys a healthy influx of starving artists and wannabe novelists, for its feature tipples are 'Writers Block Lager' and 'Inspiration Red Ale', both of which are from the Franciscan Well Brewery. Try not to rush yourself here, this is one of those pubs where you could (and should) claim a seat mid-afternoon and not budge until late in the evening. I especially like the little cove with the bench seats, where you feel almost like you are in someone's living room, and are almost entirely tucked away from the rest of the bar. Be sure to check out the old books on the shelves, and the pictures of famous Irish writers. The Ginger Man is steeped in Ireland's literary history and by the looks (and the pints) is trying to create more of it within its own four walls. read more

I like this place's casual college-y vibe...and i'm a fan of the idea of getting beers from artisan suppliers....like the Franciscan Well in Cork city - another favourite of mine BTW! I went with my ginger man just for drinks. I had a pint of gingerman writer's larger and my ginger man had an IPA. I also tried Dublin blonde recommended by a bar staff. But the lager was the best! Many people were having dinner and the food looked gorgeous (also generous portion). I'll have food next time. Friendly staff and plenty of comfortable places to seat. The music was not loud. We came because of the proximity to the Alexander Hotel... we kept coming back because of the excellent pub grub, outstanding service, and a cozy feel that encouraged eveyone to relax and unwind. A small group touring Ireland and staying at the Alexander, we stopped by for a bite and a pint after a long day of travelling. It was late and we were beat and no one cared to make the trek to O'Neill's, so we opted for convenience instead. For most of us, it was our third or fourth, or even sixth trip to Ireland, so we knew we would get around to hitting all of our Dublin favorites sooner or later. What a delightful surprise to find that the Ginger Man would become the standard to which we compared all other pubs on this particular visit. Sure, we found other pubs that exceeded the Ginger Man in one respect or the other, but quite often we heard, "It's great... but the Ginger Man was better!", particularly with regard to the menu. read more

A very cozy pub, about half way between Trinity and Silicon Docks, so makes for a good watering hole if you're walking from one of the tech companies and into the city centre. Low ceilings, dark wood panelling, and a combination of tables, booths, and bar seating makes lends a proper, old-fashioned feel to the place. Patrons is a good mix of locals, young professionals from various industries, and relatively few tourists (they rarely make it out this far). We dropped in for an afternoon drink, five of us. The barman was very friendly and knowledgeable about the beers they kept on tab, and even offered up tasters to help us decide. Selections made, he poured them out, except for the Guinness's, which he asked us to wait at the table for, and he'd bring them down. Love a barkeep who takes pride in properly pouring a Guinness. Pub isn't terribly large, but even if it does see a fairly good flow of guests, it doesn't feel overly crowded. read more

this reminds you of any neighborhood pub that you see in any street. they have a pretty good beer selction and the folks are nice. i tried the Guinness Stew and it was pretty good once i mixed it all up, but i was expecting a little more. i am not sure if it was more flavor or more stew with less pastry or the mash with the stew, but the presentation was pretty cool! i have yet to do the dublin pub crawl, but i am expecting this place to be like many of the other pubs in the area! time for another Guinness!!! read more

Ginger Man was my best pub experience in Dublin. I tried some much more famous places before finding this gem right next to my hotel. They have a good selection of beers for most tastes (they had a great wheat brew for me). What makes them stand out is their food. The selection is pretty much classic: fish and chips, Guinness stew, bangers and mash. But quality is far above all rivals. All staff was very friendly which added to a great overall experience. read more

We went for New Years with a group of 4 Americans to drive around Ireland. This was our favorite place to hang out and grab a pint. The food was fantastic and the service was great! We traveled from Dublin to Killarney and back to Dublin. We went as often as we could! I had my first Guinness here and it was a grand experience! We had Bangers and Mash, Guinness pie, and fish & chips. I can't say which was my favorite because we all just kept ordering and sharing. read more

My hubby and I stopped in here for a pint (well 2 a piece) on our way back to the hotel. It was a nice pub with a good atmosphere. A lot of the locals were watching a rugby game. Some friends and I met for lunch here the other day and it proved to be a good call. The staff were really friendly and everything on the menu sounded delicious. I went for one of that day's specials: roast chicken, chips and gravy, which proved to be a tasty bargain at €7:95. Infact, everyone was happy with what they got and it was very fast - making it ideal for your work lunch break. Of course this is a pub, so it's not just about the food. I've been here in the evening time for a few sociables and it's a pretty cool bar with good music and a nice atmosphere. It also has an area downstairs which can be hired for functions. I haven't been here for many a year, but walking home from town on a warm afternoon we decided to stop for a drink. Although not on the demon weed anymore, we still prefer to sit outside when possible and they have made a decent effort at comfort given the limited on street space available. I was interested to see that they had some craft beers on tap so I chanced a Writers Red. Nice beer, smooth and it went down well. It was a quiet satruday afternoon so other than a friendly barman I can't say much more but it is on my places to stop list and I'll be back after I get a chance to try it out at a more lively time. We had an absolute BLAST here! The staff was nothing short of awesome. I was starving and there weren't many open options so late for food. We slid in about 5 minutes prior to food service ending but the cook graciously accepted our orders. I had the bangers and mash and my other half had a burger. SO DELISH!! We drank quite a bit with the bartender and chatted with a local drunk for the longest time and every minute was so awesome. We left with full bellies, slightly tipsy and with new friends! Very handy pub for visitors to the Alexander (it is next door!). Friendly, often crowded, with a great pub atmosphere not found very often these days in the UK. Service is excellent and the food plentiful, if a little restricted and cholesterol-laden. Definitely worth a visit if you are in the area. read more

Me and my other half found this place on the last night, it's safe to say that this was by far the best place we have eaten. We had the sirloin steak and the chicken, ham and leek pie. Incredible to say the least! After the gorgeous main we couldn't turn down dessert. I'm a massive sticky toffee pudding fan. BEST IVE EVER HAD. If you've read J.P Donleavy's The Gingerman, then go to The Gingerman. If you've been to The Gingerman, then please read the book. If you've done both already, then wipe that smug look from your face and just do both again. You will not be sorry on any accounts, I can promise you. The Gingerman - the pub version, that is - is situated a couple minutes walk from Pearse Street or Nassau Street. And a very nice pub it is indeed. Capturing snugness without reverting to old-man's-pub and a contemporary trendiness without being pretentious or intimidating is hard enough if only one of the above is trying to be achieved; The Gingerman somehow manages both simultaneously. The pub is cosy, with various nooks and crannies to accommodate craic and a catch up, and the décor has just the right tinge of subtle coolness. As a result, the atmosphere is lively, relaxed and conducive to laughter - everything a pub should be. The staff are friendly and helpful, and skilled at just the right amount of casual banter. There is also good pub grub available, the menu being a simple range of dishes - the one to go for is The Gingerman Platter, which boasts of a range of hot nibbles including chicken wings, wedges, onion rings, chicken dippers and scampi. If you're staying there for the evening, you won't be able to resist sampling something; the waft of hot food that arises from the piled up plates is hard to resist. There is also a nice range of drinks promotions, from jugs of beer to €3.50 pints of larger, stout or beer. And if you happen to visit for a jar during the Christmas season, be prepared for a lights and decorations display that must surely send The Gingerman's electric bill through the roof, and transforms the place into a sort of alcohol-serving grotto, the kind of place Santa's elves would go after they clock out of the workshop. Keep an eye out for the quotes from Donleavy's novel, too, frosted on the glass in the doors. i always forget this place is relatively close and pretty convenient... last night a friend suggested it and after some groans from my husband, we went there anyway. the husband thinks it's dark and cramped. i disagree. it *is* a bit dark, but it's not so bad. and they have trees and things by the windows which add some atmosphere. i don't actually think it's all that cramped unless there are a bunch of large groups in there. but that's really where it wins - the large group thing. the tables are large, there are large bench seats and plenty of chairs and stools around. no matter how many people i've seen crammed in there, there is always somewhere for them to sit. while we were there, i think about 4 groups of 10-15 people came in :) never seen a pub that hoppin on a tuesday. they do serve food, which can be helpful in the after work hours when you'd like to stay drinking, but your stomach demands satisfaction. the food is your usual fried fare and they have a decent platter if you want a plate of fried things to share. beyond that, the choice tends to be a bit disappointing. just try and find a single healthy item! even the "salad" comes covered in some sort of mayonaisey-fishy-god-knows-what concoction and you can barely see the generic lettuce beneath it. but then again, you don't go to pubs to eat healty, do ya? read more

The reason to go is for the decor which is very neat and seems like the sort of place that you could have a chilled out evening and might also have bored games though I have not checked into this possibilty. There is lots of stuff to look at and that is why it is great. On the other hand like most good places the secret is out so try and not make your visit during peak times (after 9pm til close on fridays and on the weekend and btw 6-9 weekdays). This is awfully difficult so in the end just try and stake your claim because the place is worth a look despite the crowds. Like most places the girls bathroom is smallish so keep that in mind. There is an outside seating area but that is at the entrance and can also get quite full. read more

I'm a fan of this place for its decent prices and good atmosphere. It's a great place for catching up with people and it's not so loud that you can't hear yourself speak. It's also in a good location so if you want to head into town afterwards, it's not too far. It has a mixed bag of visitors - after work drinks, students, tourists, and the odd hipster, for the most part. All in all, one of the more pleasant spots in the neighbourhood! read more

I have many fond memories of the Ginger Man. While I studied abroad at Trinity last year, this became our regular pub. It has a nice, warm, relaxed atmosphere similar to a really good friend's house. The little, hidden book nook is really cool and cosy, and it's fun to thumb through all of the random books. The bartenders are all really nice, and the crowd isn't usually too terrible. The Franciscan pints are pretty good and cheap, and they pour a pretty decent Guinness. read more
