Dined a second time recently. Drowned caesar salad yet again. A $63 price for two when one of us had a Cobb salad, one wine, seems a bit high. Music way way too loud. Finally complained and heavy base was corrected. 4 oz steak the size of a half dollar. read more

The twice baked potatoes where dry and cold when served. Ribeye was super salty. Shrimp cocktail was not fresh, shrimp was rubbery and no flavor, cocktail sauce was congealed, not fresh! Consistently good and one of my favorite spots in Decatur. Last visit was a bit challenging as they ran out of certain entrees. The cajun pasta and the pork chop were our alternatives however the pasta definitely didn't signify' Cajun and lacked flavor as well as the pork chops needed more seasoning. The food was not that great for the price. Our filets were way over cooked, the twice-baked potato was dry like it had been sitting a while. Homeless came in off the street and wandered around; tried to grab my camera from our waitress who had offered to take our picture. The service made up for much of this, though. Loved my visit at Gin Mill. Took my father to celebrate his 61st birthday and though we were completely under dressed, we were treated extremely well from the gentleman who was on a quick phone break who opened the back door for us, to our server to the bartender, we had impeccable service. I created reservations through Yelp, but couldn't remember the time I scheduled them for. Phoned the restaurant day of and asked for a reminder and was advised that they do not check Yelp reservations and it was best to phone in. Made new reservations for that evening and it was not a problem. Ambiance: It reminded me of a New York restaurant during Mob era. LOL I loved it! It also reminded me of a restaurant that should be dtwn Chicago or in dtwn Mpls, where I live. To think this was right in the heart of Decatur, IL, made it even more of a special treat. Everyone there either looked like a business professional or a retiree, except for my dad and I. LOL We did NOT look like we belonged. LOL My Aunt felt like we didn't have to dress up, and I even brought a dress to wear there for dinner; needless to say I will not listen to her again re: dressing for dinner in Decatur. Food: The food was great! My favorite of all time was the tempura lobster tail. I thought it was going to be an entire lobster tail, deep-fried in tempura..and it was, but in pieces. Delicious! I wanted to order another tail, honestly. My fathers steak was made exactly as he asked for it: medium well and it taste fantastic (i had a little piece of the birthday boys steak) and my chilean sea bass was simply okay. Maybe I would have enjoyed it more if I hadn't tried my dads steak first or had the lobster. The bartender made a good tasting Side Car... i advised him on my way out. I love this place. Wonderful service people. The friendliest on earth. All in, The Gin Mill, at the center of downtown Decatur, is probably the best restaurant in town. Appropriate for business lunch or dinner. it is steeped in history and has a very nice feeling inside with period decor. The meal I had was perfect: Brown Derby Cobb Salad (far larger than I thought it would be -- it could have been my entire meal), made the authentic original way; I also ordered the "Animal" which was a delicious burger with cheese an onion mixed into it, truly enhancing the flavor. read more

This restaurant is great! Comfortable environment, friendly staff. Might want to make a reservation for the weekend though, it's kind of hard to get in without one. I have eaten here many times and consider it my favorite in Decatur. Usually order the Ribeye, asparagus, and salad. Bentley, the bartender, is outstanding and makes a great Manhattan! Great atmosphere and decor...could be in downtown Chicago. read more

Overall good food with some room for improvement. The good parts. I really enjoyed the lobster bisque, I had actually heard from a couple people to go and check out the lobster bisque and I have to say, it's seriously good. We also ordered with our appetizer course a bruschetta that was also quite good, however it ended up arriving a minute or two before our meal so we couldn't really enjoy it much as we were only a couple bites in. My girlfriend and I like to share so we got a margherita pizza and a chicken cordon bleu. The side with the cordon bleu was the mac cheese. The pizza was really more of a flatbread, I liked it but it definitely isn't what you think of when you order a margherita pizza. The chicken cordon bleu was exceptional. Perfect outer crust, inside was full of cheese, and the chicken was still full of juices. The mac was pretty disappointing in comparison. It seems like they pre make it and it just sits under a heat lamp, the noodles were way overcooked and just fell apart, also if there was supposed to be bacon, there was not really much of it in my portion. It's not a huge deal but I'd definitely skip it for a different side as I saw some of the other side options and they looked a lot better. We ordered a couple of drinks and they were very good. I couldn't remember the exact nameof the drink however it's the gin drink our server suggested off of the specialty menu, it was light and refreshing, but they definitely didn't skimp on the gin! Overall there's a bit of room for improvement on the service side and in the kitchen, but it was certainly worth checking out and I plan on visiting again if I'm in the area. read more

We have been to The Gin Mill previously and had very good food and service. Our most recent visit left much to be desired however. To start off, they couldn't find our reservation. The hostess was cold, rude, and aloof about this. The restaurant was EMPTY and she told us we'd probably have to wait. She went to speak to another employee and we were eventually seated. While we were looking over the menu, we noticed water was dripping on us. Our server told us it was condensation from the pipes overhead. Our server was very nice but no one offered to move us to a different spot (at this point the restaurant was still pretty much empty other than one other table). So we remained being dripped on. Our server did a great job though and most of the food was very good. However, my husband ordered the special, Cordon Bleu, and was very disappointed. It was covered in cheddar cheese with very little ham. Also, the lobster bisque (which is normally very good) had absolutely no lobster in it. As far as ambiance, the dripping was compounded by two of the walls having been stripped of their wallpaper and left. If they are under construction, they did not indictate that anywhere. Overall, very disappointed in a place we usually enjoy. read more

Although we had to wait longer than expected with tables open (I suspect due to staffing shortages), they were kind and ultimately did provide very good service. I had a cup of loaded baked potato soup, which was decent, but had something funky like nutmeg in it.
