Immaculately curated, well-staffed, and passionately owned, this is the vintage mecca. It in no way feels like everyone dumped their dear Aunt Mabel's sweaty stained frocks in here. Quality stuff. I'm thinking that there is a 1920's to 1980's spread of clothing here. No concentration on one era over the other, though perhaps the '80s and '50s stuff is less present than the others? I'm no fashion historian, mind you. I'd say there's about a 60/40 or 70/30 split of women's to men's clothing. There are the prerequisite band t-shirts and retro baseball-tees. There are jackets and jeans. There are boots and heels, hats of all kinds, and jewelry. Dresses, and coats, and skirts, oh my! From faux to real, there's a lot here. You've got to keep your eyes peeled if you are looking for something specific. The store is pleasantly full (not overwhelming, but far from sparse) and there are lots of great displays throughout the store. Hat boxes are all over the place with... well... hats piled inside. There is a small trunk with gloves in it. It's really easy for a non-detail-oriented person like me to not find anything. But don't worry, you're not marooned. I always give a general, vague, poorly stated description of what I want and BAM. The person working magically knows exactly what I'm talking about. In no time, they are pulling finds from all nooks of the store. All the staff has been attentive, helpful, and genuinely friendly here - they must've really tackled the 'attitude problem' that reviewers mentioned from a year or two ago. Not a place where I personally would get my everyday items, since I don't wear vintage myself. But The Getup is definitely a place I would go to basque in the glory of the past and to find a thing or two for a special occasion. If you are hesitant at all, just come in once and poke around. It's not at all as elitist and exclusive as it may look from the outside. All ages and types are welcomed so don't kvetch like I did. Just visit. read more

Fun little shop to visit if you want to take a quick trip back in time. Shopped here recently while on a campus visit and really enjoyed checking out what they had to offer. The pros: *(Mostly) great prices. Sure there were a few things that were overpriced but overall, the prices were fair. *Although small, great selection of merchandise. Even some vintage swimsuits in a nod to the current season. *FANTASTIC shoe selection! They had a whole wall of vintage shoes including my personal favorite, jellies. The cons: *It's small. They don't have a TON of selection but they do pack a lot into their space. *The smell. The store had an odor. I don't know if it's always there but on the day I visited, it was really off-putting. Our group cut our visit short because we couldn't take it anymore. It smelled like a gas station bathroom. Not the new ones that are clean and state of the art and an automatic air freshener sprays every 15 minutes. One of the old-school ones where you got the key and wandered into the nefarious back of the station and when you finally got the door open it looked like a crime scene? Yep, one of those. read more

This place seems so cool. They've got some great clothes and from everything that I understand the owner really works hard to get awesome items and knows her whole stock. However, every time I go in there I wanna scream because none of the staff will give you the time of day. They just hide in the corner talking to their friends, even despite eye contact. I'd totally buy something, but I have no idea what I'm looking for. Ideally their job is to get morons like me to buy their products, but it appears not so. Though I love this store, I'm guilty. I'm guilty of not going in here quite enough. I think it's because I realize that I could develop a real habit here. The owner, Kelly, has an impeccable eye. She's specific about what she'll buy (and I say this as someone who has bought and sold a lot of vintage over the years), but I really think it's only because she knows her store well and is keeping the eventual customer in mind. You won't find too many "eh" items in the store at all. From cowboy boots to members-only jackets to racks of dresses, Kelly knows her stuff and also understands what customers are looking for -- stocking vintage items that people seek out most (t-shirts, accessories, frocks). This last time, I had some relatively minty 60s stuff that I found during my move -- I got a totally fair trade-in value, and an even better deal because I found a cute dress and a locket. I walked out with a few less non-fitting dresses and one more that did fit... and with a little cash in my pocket, too. If you're looking for something unique and don't have the patience to scour every thrift store and alter things, a trip to the Getup makes life a whole lot easier, and it's not too hard on the wallet, either... read more

This place is easy to miss. Look for it on State Street near the State Theater. You have to go into the doors for Mr. Greek's and up the stairs, way up the stairs, and then you'll hit it. The buyer, Kelly, is an awesome woman who is friendly and has great taste. She loaned me a red rosary to wear around my neck when I needed it for a photo shoot. I love shopping here for belts and jewelry -- I always go here instead of Urban Outfitters. I always find something more unique and for a reasonable price. You can also sell your vintage pieces here if they are in good condition. Best find? This awesome, foxy leather trench with fur lapels. I always get compliments on it. read more

Oh wow, it's like I went back in time! No, not like that. Like back when I was in high school and ALL the vintage stores were stocked like The Getup--not like the costume/prop room from That 70s Show. From 50s cocktail frocks to slips to jewelry, the owner knows what she's doing. To say she has an excellent eye is an understatement. More than one lunch hour has been spent perusing the racks and shelves of this lovingly kept store. Stuff moves, so I tend to pop in often. I have found the staff to be extremely friendly and helpful, but then I'm a low maintenance kind of shopper (and someone who has done a LOT of vintage shopping over the years). I know what I like and prefer to be left alone unless I have a question or need something taken down. When I do come a-askin', there's always a smile and, sometimes, a really creative suggestion. OK, so, it's been a long time since my last review and just out of sheer business + the holidays + trying to watch my pennies I hadn't been back to The Getup. I'd like to point out that the owner did contact me about my less-than-awesome phone experience last summer which I really, really appreciated. She even went so far as to say they would be addressing the attitude issue in an upcoming meeting, which was pretty impressive to me. Anyway, I went in last week and, per usual, immediately found the cutest damn dress that not only fit great, but was only $25. The employees were also, I am happy to say, very cheery and helpful. THIS PLACE IS AWESOME. I came in here on a whim (after visiting the very overpriced Urban Outfitters) and was pleasantly surprised at their stock. Seriously, it's impossible to go in here and not find something you like. I wanted everything. The store is organized by decade. It's small and stocked, but not messy. It's really easy to find what you're looking for, and if you can't, the staff is very helpful. Only bummer is that some of the items are a bit overpriced, but not all of them are. Even if you don't buy anything, it's fun to browse! If you're willing to splurge, I guarantee you'll walk away with something unique and amazing. read more

Currently my favorite vintage spot in Ann Arbor. I think at one point last week I went there 4 times in 2 days.... yeah, know you got it bad when... Stuff isn't always the cheapest but there are usually some bargains if you dig. Nice collection of shoes and boots. Like their jackets as well. Good women's dresses/blouses. Also a lot of vintage jewelry from early 1900's. The owner of the store is really nice and attentive. She does a great job with the selection. I've really begun to appreciate lately how much more I like the vintage shops that have a smaller collection because they've already selected out the good stuff. If you want more selection and are looking to find one specific crazy thing you might be better served going to the Salvation Army. But this is definitely a place to come back to regularly because they do update. I also find myself coming back here to double check before I buy something anywhere else, but that's a dangerous habit to start because this place will suck you in.....doo doo doo doooooo. read more

I love vintage clothing shops and am constantly on the hunt for unique pieces. This is one of the better shop I've seen. The pieces are well selected and everything is unique. I wished I lived in Michigan so I can keep shopping here. Found two amazing sweaters for $50 (stuff that you just can't find anymore, the quality and design is incredible) and the coolest fur trimmed cardigan. I could spend hours in this store. Amazing vintage store. Normally I have a hard time finding vintage clothes that fit (I am 5 feet, 3 inches and 130 pounds) but that is still bigger than a lot of the vintage clothes I have found for women. Oddly enough a friend of mine and I by chance walked by. We had just talked about dress shopping for an event. I tried on four dresses and a sleeveless sequined sweater and a pair of adorable dead stock Neiman Marcus pumps, and smiling the whole time because everything looked great on! I ended up getting two dresses, the sequined sweater and the shoes. One of the owners was super cheery and helpful and they have a punch card that once accumulated gives you money off a purchase. I can't believe how lucky I was at trying things on that night! I can't wait to go back to Ann Arbor to see what they have! Thank you for doing what you do! read more

I should have written this review long ago. As a historian and lover of all things mid-20th century, I have been an great fan of The Getup for many years now. In the last couple years I have tried to commit to an all-recycled wardrobe on a very small budget. The Getup is playing a huge part in that because they have an amazing selection of fun and classic pieces that are perfect for everyday wear at very affordable prices. I love the clothes, but it's the reasonable prices that keep me coming back on a regular basis. If you're into quirky, loud, or eccentric you'll find that too. The shop also has great special-occasion pieces and accessories. I almost never walk into the store without purchasing something. The staff is friendly and always willing to help if I need it, especially the owner whose enthusiasm is undeniable and infectious. read more

One of my favorite vintage stores. Everything is in very good condition, and everything is super awesome...there is something for everyone here. There's band tees, old 70s jeans, hippie dresses, frilly 50s ball gowns, mod 60s dresses, pretty much everything you can think of. Stopping here is a must for a special occasion, or if you're just looking for some awesome additions to your everyday wardrobe! The only con is the prices - I feel some things are overpriced. I LOVE this place. They always have a great selection of clothes and accessories. The staff is always helpful. I went in yesterday to check out a pair of shoes for a friend, and since the associate happened to have the same shoe size as my friend, she tried them on to tell me how they fit. The shoes didn't have a price tag, so they set them at $15. Wow! Pretty cheap for downtown Ann Arbor. I particularly love their selection of accessories -- beautiful shoes, handbags, and jewelry, most of which are less than $30. The Get Up is one of my favorite things about Ann Arbor. The ladies that run it are two of the hardest working women I know. They put their whole hearts into the shop and you can tell. So I was in Ann Arbor for the summer, which has a very small downtown. One of the few things I loved about the place was this AMAZING store. I just fell in love with it. I would go there after work and on my weekends. The people who work there and who I met are very nice and friendly gorgeous young ladies. I loved hearing how they get their stuff. They tell you to feel free and to try on whatever you like. I had soo much fun putting on clothing from the different eras and feeling like I am going back in time! I found there the most beautiful dress, which was made in Japan in the 60s, as a gift for my bestie. I also found a fancy red suede coat which gets compliments the whole time. The highlight of my interaction with Kelly and another bright lady, I cannot remember her name, is when I visited them on my last day in Ann Arbor and I saw this amazing ring. Sadly my bank card was not working and I could not go back on that day. So I called them from Boston asking them if they can hold it for me. One month later, and I was so lucky, the ring was STILL THERE! And they were more than nice to process my credit card and ship it to me. Add to that, she agreed to ship it to me for free! I signed up for yelp JUST to thank them for the great time I had visiting their store and getting very unique and just beautiful pieces for fairly good prices. I was impressed by the reviews on this store until I made an appointment to sell clothes to the owner. She was a no show to our appointment and left me standing on the street for a half hour after lugging baskets of clothes half way thru Ann Arbor. We waited half an hour after the store was supposed to open and still no show. We left finally. I never received a phone call explaining. When I called them, I was told the owner had FORGOT and would call me right back to schedule her coming to my house. A week later I'm still waiting for that phone call. read more
